After Transmigrating as a Scum Alpha, I Marked my White Moonlight Omega - Chapter 15
When Jiang Nan woke up, she found herself lying on a rock-hard bed. The mattress beneath her didn’t feel like the one she usually slept on, and she couldn’t help but furrow her brow.
Opening her eyes, she realized her surroundings were very simple, even bleak. Above her hung a European-style pendant lamp covered in black spots; the wallpaper featured an old-fashioned floral pattern from years ago, and the furniture exuded a strong sense of the “old days.”
After a long moment of dazing, Jiang Nan realized that she and Lin Yu must have arrived at their arranged residence in the slums.
Getting out of bed, she immediately pushed open the bedroom door. She saw luggage placed haphazardly in a living room devoid of much furniture. The tiny balcony let in thin slivers of morning light, though most of it was blocked by the residential buildings in front. It was no wonder the room smelled of a damp mustiness from the lack of sunlight.
The living room and dining area were integrated into one small space—much smaller than the area she occupied back at the villa. It reminded her of the cramped, crummy shack she had rented back when she was a struggling corporate drone before transmigrating into the book.
Lin Yu happened to unlock the door and enter the house just then. She wore a loose hoodie and a mask that covered half her face. As she closed the door, she brought in the unique chill of winter. In her hands, she carried two large bags of daily necessities and groceries.
Seeing Jiang Nan hopping around barefoot in the living room that hadn’t been cleaned yet, Lin Yu frowned, though her tone wasn’t too harsh. “The house hasn’t been tidied up yet. Remember to wear slippers.”
Reminded by Lin Yu, Jiang Nan immediately ran back into the room to put on her slippers. She then huddled close to Lin Yu, smiling brightly as she said, “Wife, don’t you think the two of us living here is a lot like… a honeymoon?”
There was no Nan Zhi or Yue Qian here, no talkative subordinates, and none of the vast open space of the villa.
But she felt that in this tiny, narrow monthly rental, with only her and Lin Yu, there was a strange sense of intimacy—a closeness that was missing in the distance of the grand villa.
Lin Yu began organizing the ingredients and putting them in the fridge. She turned around with an expression like she’d just stepped in something unpleasant. She glanced at the sunlight-starved surroundings, then at the starry-eyed Jiang Nan, and asked in confusion:
“…Going on a honeymoon in a place like this? Truth be told, it’s pretty creepy.”
Jiang Nan followed Lin Yu’s gaze around the cramped room. The dim, orange-yellow light inside the waist-high fridge flickered. She scratched her cheek with a dry laugh and changed the subject.
“I’ll help ‘Husband’ too… doing all this work alone must be exhausting.”
Lin Yu closed the fridge. She didn’t rush to give Jiang Nan any tasks; instead, she shook her head truthfully and said, “I’m not tired.”
With that, she walked into the nearby bathroom to set out some daily necessities she had bought at a two-dollar shop.
Jiang Nan: Ha, Wife’s stamina is truly… impressive.
But seeing her wife busy working while she just stood there like a “big boss” made her feel awkward. She stepped forward, intending to pick up a bottle of shampoo from the bag to place it in the shower area.
Lin Yu’s brow knitted. She stepped forward and grabbed Jiang Nan’s wrist, her voice deepening. “I said, I’ll do it.”
Jiang Nan didn’t understand what Lin Yu was upset about. Her eyes froze for a second, and she said weakly and with surprise: “…I just wanted to help you.”
Meeting Jiang Nan’s startled eyes, the irritability in Lin Yu’s heart flared up.
She couldn’t help but think about when they arrived in the slums last night. Just as she was preparing to get out of the car, they were met with a wave of attackers.
Fortunately, the attackers were just some local thugs passing through the slums—drunkards attempting a bit of robbery. Luckily… they weren’t people sent by their rivals.
Although she had dealt with those nobodies quickly, a seed of anxiety had been planted in her mind like a time bomb.
It was as if she were being constantly reminded that everything here was full of danger.
To Jiang Nan, whose combat power was in the negatives, this place made her seem as fragile as a flower that could be crushed at any moment. Lin Yu couldn’t even imagine if Jiang Nan could safely walk out and return once she was out of her sight.
Right—she was only worried that if Jiang Nan died, no one would be able to help her find the killer of her adoptive father.
Jiang Nan couldn’t die; that was all.
Lin Yu frowned, her internal frustration mounting. She slowly released her grip on Jiang Nan’s wrist, turned to leave, and said flatly, “You can’t help me with much… don’t make more of a mess.”
At that exact moment, Jiang Nan stepped forward and grabbed Lin Yu’s arm, giving it a hard tug to pull her back. Her brow was slightly furrowed, and a hint of inexplicable grievance showed in her eyes, yet she didn’t dare meet Lin Yu’s sharp, cold gaze.
She gradually lowered her eyes, and her grip on the other’s arm loosened. She said cautiously, “…Wife, I was wrong.”
Jiang Nan knew Lin Yu was right. Although she had the “divine power” buff, she was physically a weakling with negative combat power; not only that, she was terrified of the sight of blood.
But she just wanted to help her wife with whatever she could.
Like putting away shampoo, cleaning the little house they were about to live in, or preparing the evening meal.
She didn’t know why Lin Yu had suddenly said those words, but all she could do now was try to keep Lin Yu from leaving her behind.
Lin Yu’s expression seemed to waver, but suppressed by her inner irritability, she felt a headache coming on. She shook off Jiang Nan’s hand with a voice that betrayed obvious exhaustion.
“…I’m tired. I’m going to rest for a bit. Eat lunch by yourself.”
She turned and walked straight into the bedroom. The door closed with a distinct creak, followed by a heavy silence.
Jiang Nan stood by the bathroom door, stunned. Looking at Lin Yu’s attitude, she didn’t understand what she had done to cause this sudden, groundless argument.
She felt a pang of heartache, like an abandoned puppy, as she stared at the closed bedroom door.
Jiang Nan: Wife is mean QAQ.
She stood there until her legs felt a bit numb before snapping out of it. She walked to the fridge to see what ingredients were available to work with.
Jiang Nan: Uh, it looks like it’s all stuff I don’t know how to handle.
To avoid making her wife angry again, she decided to head out and wander around the neighborhood to see if there were any small restaurants where she could get takeout.
Of course, she… was absolutely NOT temporarily running away from home because she was sad!
Once outside, Jiang Nan realized that her apartment number was directly across from Dan Yang’s family. After heading downstairs, she saw all sorts of people passing through the narrow alleys between the residential buildings.
Some were riding rusted bicycles while swearing fluently.
Some were setting up meager stalls at the mouth of the alley, their faces reflecting a gloomy, heavy air.
After crossing this small alley, Jiang Nan saw some bustling market stalls, though the environment was poor. Her feet stepped through various stains, and her ears were filled with noisy shouting from vendors.
Jiang Nan spotted a fried noodle shop. Perhaps because it wasn’t mealtime yet, there wasn’t anyone inside—only a slender young boy sitting at one of the tables wearing an apron, seemingly peeling garlic.
She suddenly felt that the face looked familiar. Just as she was thinking of walking into the shop for a closer look, she was nearly knocked over by a passing bicycle. Jiang Nan stumbled back several steps, barely steadying herself to avoid a fall.
The old man on the bicycle had a distorted, hideous expression and cursed viciously: “Are you blind! I should’ve just hit you dead!” With that, he continued pedaling away rapidly.
Jiang Nan stood there in a daze, not even having time to react to being scolded for no reason. A surge of anger rose in her heart, but she didn’t know how to vent it. She could only pout crossly. When she looked up again, the boy peeling garlic in the noodle shop was gone.
She looked around, trying to find him, but a voice suddenly spoke from behind her.
“…Sister, you dropped your wallet.”
Hearing the voice, Jiang Nan turned around instantly. She saw the boy in the apron with clear eyes, holding her wallet out to her. He looked a bit thin and frail, his appearance exactly the same as the one she had seen on the data card projected a few days ago.
It was actually… Dan Yang?!
Seeing that it was indeed her wallet, she hurriedly nodded and thanked him with a smile. “Ah! Thank you, it is my wallet.”
Dan Yang’s expression didn’t show much emotion. Perhaps sensing that Jiang Nan didn’t look like a local, he stepped forward to offer a kind warning: “Most people who ride fast around here are pickpockets. Sister, you should be more careful when you go out in the future.”
After speaking, he didn’t linger, turning around as if eager to get back to the noodle shop.
Jiang Nan saw that she had finally run into the key person they needed to investigate. Unfortunately, her divine power seemed insufficient… she watched Dan Yang’s back for a while but couldn’t see anything.
With a sudden spark of inspiration, she followed Dan Yang into the shop. She gave a dry laugh and said, “Um, thanks for just now… I just moved nearby yesterday and I’m not familiar with the area. It’s lucky you were there, or I might not have been able to eat tonight.”
“How about I treat you to a bowl of fried noodles?”
Dan Yang knew Jiang Nan was trying to thank him. He moved the peeled garlic to the side and looked up bluntly, dark currents swirling in his obsidian eyes.
“I’m sick of fried noodles. I don’t want to eat them.”
Jiang Nan thought it was natural for Dan Yang to be sick of them since he worked in the shop every day. She nodded and conceded with a light smile, “Then what do you want to eat? My treat.”
Dan Yang’s eyes didn’t flicker much. He shifted his gaze to the market behind Jiang Nan, then back to her face.
“…Sister, I want to eat a meal cooked by you. Is that okay?”
