Chapter 5
Her chance had arrived!
Ruan Xin’s eyes lit up. She grabbed some money and found a black tracksuit in the walk-in closet.
Just as she was about to leave, however, she stopped.
She wasn’t the only person living in the Ye residence. Several pairs of eyes were watching her. If she ran out in the middle of the night, someone would undoubtedly report her. When the couple returned, they would probably criticize her and subject her to a lengthy lecture.
Perhaps she should climb out the window?
Ruan Xin backtracked and quietly slipped toward the corner of the first floor.
Then she opened a window, leaped out, and vanished into the darkness without a trace…
“System, can you give me directions?”
Ruan Xin asked while climbing over the wall.
The system didn’t make a sound.
One-star review. What a garbage system!
Ruan Xin grumbled inwardly. After walking for a while, she reached the roadside and hailed a taxi.
Once inside, she began recalling the plot.
Honestly, this novel was both bloated and ridiculously long, containing more than eight hundred chapters in total. As for the current storyline… she seemed to remember that the female lead had gone out to meet someone.
But who was it?
After thinking it over, Ruan Xin ultimately got out near Antique Street.
She crossed another street. Compared to the area surrounding Antique Street, this side appeared far more modern.
Still, the current timeline was more than a decade in the past. Just like the corresponding period in Ruan Xin’s original world, everything from the pedestrians’ clothing to the surrounding buildings carried an unmistakable sense of the era.
Where exactly was the female lead?
As Ruan Xin continued walking, she suddenly stopped and stared at an old-fashioned teahouse in front of her.
“Ah! This is the place!”
The relevant scene from the novel immediately flooded her mind.
In the original story, the female lead had gone to meet an expert. Along the way, she happened to help a wealthy second-generation heir. Unexpectedly, that young heir knew the expert, so the three of them ended up discussing jade together inside the teahouse.
“Miss Ye, why don’t I drive you home?”
A gentle and courteous male voice spoke.
Hearing it, Ruan Xin pulled her hood over her head and darted out of sight like a startled rabbit.
For a moment, she felt like a cross between a peeping tom and a resentful wife trying to catch her cheating spouse.
“Thank you, but I can return by myself.”
Ye Muyan’s voice came next, polite but faintly distant.
“Doo-doo-doo~”
Accompanied by a cheerful notification, the system announced, “Supporting male character An Chen has appeared. Please prevent An Chen from falling in love with Ye Muyan as he does in the original novel. Time limit: seven days~”
Seven days?!
Ruan Xin nearly shouted aloud.
First, who exactly was this supporting male character?
Answer: An Chen.
In the original novel, An Chen was a gentle, refined, and exceptionally considerate young master from a wealthy family. When he first met the female lead, he found her different from everyone else. As he gradually got to know her, he was slowly won over.
And then?
When his love went unrequited, he turned dark.
Ruan Xin had originally rooted for this pairing, so while following the original character’s storyline, she had also read some of An Chen’s scenes.
To explain his story, one first had to begin with Ye Muyan’s mother.
Ye Muyan’s mother was named Mu Yun, a wealthy heiress from an extremely powerful family.
Naturally, wealthy heiresses tended to have strong tempers.
Ye Muyan’s personality greatly resembled Mu Yun’s. However, Mu Yun had severed ties with her family because of her willfulness and married Father Ye. Father Ye was weak by nature, so his forceful wife inevitably overshadowed him. Even when it came to managing the company, Mu Yun was far more capable.
Yet that powerful woman still died, leaving her daughter nothing but a bracelet.
Later in the story, Ye Muyan was invited to visit the An family. The moment An Chen’s mother saw the necklace Ye Muyan was wearing, she received a terrible shock. After asking about it, she immediately burst into tears.
An Chen was confused, so his mother explained, “She’s your eldest aunt’s daughter.”
The moment those words fell, An Chen felt as though he had been struck by five bolts of lightning. His entire body froze.
He could hardly believe that Ye Muyan was his eldest aunt’s daughter.
It truly brought new meaning to the phrase: all lovers eventually become siblings.
When Ruan Xin read that part, she had sympathized with him while also struggling not to laugh. By then, An Chen had already fallen hopelessly in love with the female lead.
So what if she was his younger cousin? So what if they were related by blood?
The more An Chen thought about it, the more tormented he became. As more and more men gathered around the female lead, he gradually descended into darkness.
In the end, he even joined forces with Ruan Xin.
Still, would seven days truly be enough to deal with someone so obsessed?
Ruan Xin felt that practically any man would be attracted to Ye Muyan.
She sighed and watched the three people emerge from the teahouse.
Standing beside a middle-aged man dressed in a traditional Tang-style jacket was An Chen. He looked exactly as elegant and handsome as the novel had described. He wore a suit and gold-rimmed glasses, with a faint smile resting on his lips. His refined demeanor radiated warmth and approachability, yet beneath that cultured exterior lurked a sense of power that could erupt at any moment.
Was this the refined-scoundrel aesthetic?
Those legs! That face! She absolutely could—
No, she couldn’t!
Ruan Xin shook her head. Although she had once shipped the darkened An Chen with the vicious younger sister, relationships were far too troublesome.
She intended to become a powerful female lead with no romantic pairing!
But don’t worry, Brother An! Even without the female lead, this sister will definitely find you another girlfriend!
The thought strengthened Ruan Xin’s determination to break the two of them apart.
“Ding!”
The system announced, “Please erase the affection within twenty-four hours.”
What was happening?
Ruan Xin began to panic, but after calming down, she realized something was wrong.
Her gaze shifted to the other side, where she spotted a man wearing a motorcycle helmet furtively watching Ye Muyan.
Was it him?
Ruan Xin narrowed her eyes. She guessed that he was some sort of pervert.
“Goodbye.”
Ye Muyan bid the other two farewell.
When the helmeted man saw this, he stood and blended into the crowd before following Ye Muyan.
Ruan Xin naturally didn’t remain where she was. She followed both of them.
Compared to the helmeted man, her short stature made it much easier for her to disappear into the crowd.
Walking ahead of them, Ye Muyan glanced sideways but calmly continued buying a late-night snack.
Once she had finished, she didn’t take her usual route. Instead, she turned into a dark alley. Her steps remained relaxed and leisurely, and she appeared completely at ease as she carried the light bag of food.
However, the moment she turned around, the helmeted man would undoubtedly be beaten half to death.
The man was feeling rather pleased with himself. Staring at Ye Muyan’s beautiful figure, he pulled out a knife with one hand while the other moved toward his crotch.
No wonder some rich man is keeping her. Fuck, she’s really gorgeous…
Ye Muyan stopped walking.
Just as she prepared to whirl around and launch a surprise attack, a dark figure suddenly dragged the helmeted man away.
The scene was downright horrifying. Even the man himself looked completely bewildered and failed to react.
Ruan Xin grabbed him and kicked him into the corner of the wall. The blow nearly knocked his soul straight out of his body.
“Fuck!”
The man cursed and pulled out his knife, intending to stab her. Before he could move, however, the short girl raised her foot and stomped viciously on his hand.
“What kind of brain-dead trash are you? You actually dared to pull a knife on me?”
Ruan Xin was thoroughly disgusted. Even touching this man made her feel filthy.
If Ye Muyan had been an ordinary girl, what would have happened next?
Ruan Xin didn’t dare imagine it.
Something like this would be terrifying for anyone. What astonished her even more was that the attraction of a pervert like this somehow counted as affection.
The more Ruan Xin thought about it, the angrier she became. The instant the knife fell from his hand, she kicked it away.
“You thought that girl was beautiful? Who gave you the right to stare at her?”
Ruan Xin seized the man by the collar and punched him directly in the face.
The helmet’s plastic visor shattered instantly. Tiny fragments dug into his skin, making him howl in pain.
Ruan Xin couldn’t have cared less. Once her temper took over, she punched him again and again, cursing viciously as she did.
“Keep staring, why don’t you! Stare my ass! What were you planning to do to her? You’re nothing but a filthy fucking pervert!”
“I won’t do it again! I swear! Please stop hitting me!” the helmeted man begged.
[Current points +5]
Only when she heard the notification did Ruan Xin stop.
She had beaten him enough, and the mission was complete. There was no reason to remain there any longer.
After confiscating his knife, she walked away. Before she had taken more than a few steps, she unexpectedly ran straight into An Chen, who had followed because he was worried.
She raised her chin, signaling for him to move aside.
An Chen seemed unable to process what he had just witnessed, but he still dazedly stepped out of her way.
Ruan Xin swaggered past him. Before leaving, she didn’t forget to add, “The problem has been handled. She doesn’t need you to escort her home.”
An Chen smiled and nodded.
Once Ruan Xin had left, he continued searching for Ye Muyan, only to discover her standing around the corner of the alley, silently watching.
In the darkness, Ye Muyan’s eyes were filled with shock and suspicion.
Was that truly Ruan Xin…?
Shouldn’t her younger sister have hidden behind her? Or at least pretended to be weak and helpless?
Was that violent girl really Ruan Xin?
Why had she always pretended in front of Ye Muyan?
And why had she helped her?
Unless…
Had Ruan Xin also been reborn?
No. If she had experienced the same thing as Ye Muyan, then everything she had said and done during the day would have been far too contradictory.
An Chen asked, “Miss Ye, are you all right?”
“Thank you. I’m fine.”
Ye Muyan sounded distracted.
“Do you know that young girl from earlier?”
“She’s my younger sister.”
An Chen looked astonished. He had to admit that the girl had been vicious when she fought. She also seemed incredibly strong.
He phrased his next words tactfully.
“She seems to have a very bold personality. Perhaps she’s going through a rebellious phase?”
Bold? Rebellious?
Those were certainly new ways to describe her.
Ye Muyan smiled.
“She has always been an excellent student. She’s gentle, obedient, and sensible.”
An Chen became even more confused.
He truly couldn’t understand the relationship between sisters. More astonishingly, he couldn’t connect that vicious little girl with words like excellent, gentle, obedient, or sensible.
“She seemed very worried about you.”
“Did she?”
Ye Muyan chuckled softly.
If Ruan Xin truly worried about her sister, why had she arranged for someone to run Ye Muyan over? Why had she said those vicious things? Why had she framed Ye Muyan again and again?
No.
She would never forgive Ruan Xin merely because of what had happened today.
Ye Muyan’s smile disappeared, but she still couldn’t resist asking, “Mr. An, why do you think she was worried about me?”
An Chen answered without hesitation, “You’re her older sister. Isn’t it perfectly normal for a younger sister to worry about her older sister?”
Ye Muyan fell silent.
An Chen looked somewhat troubled.
“It’s becoming harder and harder to understand children these days. Still, kids her age usually want other people’s attention, especially from their family and friends.”
“Attention?”
Ye Muyan grew even more puzzled. Although she had been reborn in her fifteen-year-old body, her true age was around the same as An Chen’s.
She had also been awkward and rebellious as a teenager. She had done plenty of reckless things too, but that was all in the past.
Now, Ye Muyan could no longer understand how teenagers thought or behaved. In fact, she found their actions utterly baffling.
Guessing that the sisters were fighting, An Chen tried to guide her.
“What is your younger sister like in your eyes?”
Ye Muyan considered the question for a long time before finally answering, “She’s nothing but a spoiled, delicate little nuisance.”
…
“Achoo!”
Ruan Xin sneezed.
Ding!
The data screen appeared once again.
Congratulations were in order. Her black-heart value had now risen to 10.
“What’s this?”
Ruan Xin ignored the black heart and instead noticed that the little devil’s value had changed.
Current value: 25/9999.
Nine thousand nine hundred and ninety-nine?
She clicked her tongue several times. Fortunately, that wasn’t a mission requirement. Otherwise, it would be completely impossible to accomplish!
Still, complaining was complaining, and Ruan Xin was already exhausted.
She had no energy to think about little devils, statistics, or anything else.
Finally, she had to acknowledge one truly miserable fact…
Neither the windows nor the doors would open.
She had been locked outside.
