After Transmigrating as the Scumbag Alpha in an Otherworld Novel, I Ended Up with the Villain - Chapter 16
Whiz, whiz, whiz.
The sound of several more arrows rang out, and everyone scrambled to scatter.
Su Xinge, who was walking near the rear, immediately took Lin Yuxuan and An Le and swiftly dodged behind the nearest building.
Zhang Tian executed a tactical roll and hid behind the same building as Su Xinge, while Su San followed suit, crawling and rolling in after him.
In a building opposite Su Xinge, Ye Hai and the other members took cover one after another.
Leaning against the wall, Zhang Tian pulled out a gun from his coat and cursed, “Where did these bastards come from?”
Seeing Zhang Tian’s movement, Su Xinge quickly spoke up, “Do you have a silencer? We haven’t even found a safe house yet; do you want to attract a zombie siege right here?”
Zhang Tian replied, “Then what else can I do? There are no other long-range means of attack. We can’t just stand here like live targets and let them shoot us.”
Su Xinge fell silent for a moment before saying, “Let’s at least figure out why they are attacking us first.”
Zhang Tian put the gun down and said impatiently, “Big sister, I almost bit the dust, and you still want to figure out why they’re attacking us? Damn it, if I’d known I’d run into these rogues, I would’ve—”
Su Xinge waved her hand to stop Zhang Tian and said, “Look across.”
Zhang Tian turned to look at the opposite building.
Ye Hai was facing the wall, pointing straight ahead with his finger, then gestured a ‘3’ and a ‘2’.
Su Xinge nodded.
Ye Hai had been closest to Zhang Tian at the start, so his first priority when they were attacked was to judge the enemy’s direction and notify the group to take cover. Everyone was now clear on the situation: without suitable long-range weapons, a ranged battle was out of the question. Their only chance of winning was to plan a way to get close and attack from short range. Otherwise, firing a gun recklessly would likely attract a zombie horde, leaving them unable to escape—after all, they didn’t have a safe place to rest yet.
Ye Hai continued to gesture from the other side.
After he finished, Su Xinge turned back to Zhang Tian and asked, “What did he mean just now? I spaced out for a second and didn’t see clearly.”
Lin Yuxuan looked at Su Xinge with a scrutinizing gaze.
Zhang Tian said speechlessly, “How can you space out at a time like this? He means for us to cut through the teaching buildings so we don’t show our heads on the main road. After passing through two buildings, we’ll coordinate. Our side will draw the enemy’s attention and provide cover so they can get close and counterattack.”
Su Xinge looked at the building. The main door was half-closed. She hesitated, “There might be things inside.”
Zhang Tian waved his hand dismissively and said with certainty, “Better than being a live target on the road. There are definitely only zombies in the teaching buildings. With my ability, going straight in and out shouldn’t trigger a siege.”
The team members were only three buildings away from the attackers. They had observed earlier that this building had doors at the front and back; entering from the front meant they could likely pass straight through the back door, so the move wasn’t too risky.
Su Xinge nodded and then gave Ye Hai an ‘OK’ gesture.
Su Xinge turned back to Zhang Tian. His clothes were covered in murky filth, so she asked, “Is that filth all from zombies? You didn’t get any living human blood on you, right?”
Zhang Tian nodded, “Of course it’s zombies. If I were injured, would I still be this lively?”
Su Xinge asked, “Since you don’t have the jacket anymore, how do you plan to use your ability?”
“Just watch.” Zhang Tian smiled and took out a flask of water from his backpack, gulped down several large mouthfuls, and put the water away. “This is fresh, so the smell might be a bit strong. You guys will have to bear with it.”
With that, Zhang Tian spat on himself several times.
As the smell spread, Su Xinge suddenly felt like she was in a world full of toxic gas. Even Lin Yuxuan couldn’t help but frown, and An Le directly covered her nose with her hand.
Seeing Zhang Tian staring at her, Su Xinge quickly said, “Just spit on yourself, that’s enough.”
Zhang Tian put his backpack back on and snorted, “Heh, I wouldn’t waste it on others anyway.”
Su Xinge looked at Zhang Tian and said seriously, “Go stand by the door for a moment to test the effect. Maybe we can walk right through without even having to lift a finger.”
Zhang Tian raised an eyebrow, patted his chest, and smiled proudly, “Just watch. My spit might not work on other mutations, but subduing a small range of zombies is a piece of cake.”
Lin Yuxuan lowered her head and didn’t say a word. There are thousands of Awakened in the base, and quite a few weird ones, but someone like Zhang Tian was truly rare.
Su Xinge shifted her gaze to the other side. Ye Hai and the others had already disappeared into the teaching building. When she looked back, Zhang Tian was already standing at the building’s entrance. The door was pushed open, but no zombies came out to attack them.
About five minutes later, Su Xinge sensed the movement inside and said, “It works. Let’s go.”
Zhang Tian walked in the middle, and the team members followed closely around him. Passing through the main door, they entered the lobby.
Inside the building, the light dimmed. The sunlight was sparsely scattered in the corners through the glass. They could faintly hear heavy and slow footsteps above the ceiling, the sound of heavy objects being dragged on the floor, and the creaking of various room doors. The sounds were mixed, but no zombies came out to attack them, and none were in sight.
Su Xinge walked at the front-side, gesturing to continue forward. They passed through the lobby into a corridor; it was empty with no terrifying presence in sight. They moved very carefully and slowly. At the end of the corridor, they could see the door leading outside.
At that moment, the creaking of a door came from the restroom beside the main exit. Su Xinge quickly gestured for them to move fast.
As the group approached the restroom, a series of ‘thumping’ sounds suddenly came from inside, getting louder and louder.
Everyone’s breathing became rapid, and the team moved even faster and more quietly.
They passed the restroom, walked out the door, and reached the open space between this building and the next. As the light reappeared, everyone finally relaxed slightly.
Zhang Tian stood aside, his face full of pride, looking like he was waiting to be praised.
Su Xinge saw that Ye Hai and the others hadn’t come out yet and said, “Should we keep going or wait for the group next door?”
Beside her, An Le lowered her hand, sniffed, and looked at Zhang Tian, saying, “The smell has faded a bit.”
Seeing the topic turned to him, Zhang Tian shrugged one shoulder up to his nose, took a sniff, and let it down, laughing, “I didn’t even notice. The little sprout has quite a sharp nose.”
As they spoke, Ye Hai and his group emerged. They didn’t look injured, though the filth on their blades had thickened.
Su Xinge was about to ask Ye Hai if he needed to rest, but saw him gesture ‘forward’ and immediately enter the next building.
Seeing this, Su Xinge said, “Let’s go too.”
The layout inside the building was roughly the same. The team moved in the same manner as before and again encountered no zombie attacks.
Walking out of the building, Lin Yuxuan remarked, “Zhang Tian’s ability is actually quite useful.”
Zhang Tian tilted his chin up and said proudly, “Of course. If it hadn’t been for those things in the tunnel not being zombies, we wouldn’t have been in such a mess.”
Su Xinge nodded and said, “The group shooting arrows still hasn’t shown their faces. It seems they only specialize in long-range attacks; otherwise, we would have been swarmed long ago.”
Zhang Tian looked up at the sky and said dismissively, “Hmph, just some lowlifes who only know how to shoot arrows from behind.”
Su Xinge said, “When Ye Hai comes out later, we’ll coordinate to see how to charge in.”
Zhang Tian took two more sips of water and said, “According to him, there are only two people on the other side, just two buildings ahead of the one Ye Hai is about to come out of. We’ll charge together later.”
Su Xinge said, “Charging together is impossible. We just need to provide cover.”
Lin Yuxuan nodded, “Since there are people in that building, there shouldn’t be other dangers. We just need to watch out for the long-range attacks.”
Su Xinge agreed, “Exactly. While Ye Hai isn’t out yet, let’s rest a bit more to recover our strength. We haven’t had a chance to rest since that run.”
After saying that, Su Xinge glanced at the sweating Zhang Tian.
Hearing this, Zhang Tian complained, “I’m really never taking this kind of task again. Isn’t it better just to look for supplies? Why did we have to come out to find people, and we don’t even know if they’re friends or foes.”
Su Xinge ignored Zhang Tian’s complaining. Something was definitely wrong here; this was clearly different from the plot in the novel.
Everyone stopped talking. This time, the wait was longer than the last.
After a while, Ye Hai emerged. Ignoring his disheveled state, he gestured to the other side to indicate a rest. After the gesture, he leaned directly against the wall.
Zhang Tian laughed, “So even he has moments when he’s tired.”
Su Xinge glanced at Zhang Tian and said, “You should also talk less and save your ‘spit’. Take a rest.”
Zhang Tian curled his lip and stopped talking.
Five minutes later, Ye Hai stood up and gestured to the other side, indicating he would charge forward while they provided cover. After all, the straight line between two points is the shortest; Ye Hai’s side was closest to the building where the enemies were and would be the most unexpected for an attack.
Receiving the gesture, Zhang Tian quickly said to the group, “I’m the best at providing cover, but my stamina is shot. Who’s going?”
“You’re the best…” Su Xinge didn’t finish her sentence. After hearing the second half, she directly took out two hats from her backpack, picked out two slightly thick broken branches from the ground, placed the hats on the branches, leaned against the wall, and carefully moved her steps. Holding a branch in each hand, she slowly extended them out past the wall.
Whiz, whiz.
As soon as the hats showed past the wall, they were struck down by arrows. The massive force caused the branches to shatter and burst apart.
At the same time, seeing movement on Su Xinge’s side, Ye Hai greeted the members behind him and sprinted forward along the edge of the wall, rolling and jumping.
Whiz.
An attack followed toward Ye Hai’s side, but the density was nowhere near what it was before. In the blink of an eye, Ye Hai dodged an attack and arrived safely at the building where the enemies were. The attack had been aimed at Ye Hai in the lead; the two following behind him were safe. By the time the archer tried to aim at them again, it was too late.
