Chapter 8
First period was physics class, and they had to go over yesterday’s homework.
The physics teacher stormed in furiously and slapped the lesson plan onto the desk.
“When I call your name, stand up!”
The classroom was silent enough to hear a pin drop.
A bad feeling once again surfaced in Su Linye’s heart.
Under the desk, she gripped Gu Feng’s hand tightly to prevent her from passively switching into vibration mode again.
But although her desk mate did not vibrate, the teacher still called her name.
Su Linye stood up, looking somewhat confused.
The physics teacher looked bitterly disappointed. “Su Linye, why did you copy your desk mate’s homework?! Hm?”
Su Linye grew even more confused.
Even Gu Feng lifted her bewildered face.
The physics teacher did not notice and continued earnestly, “Don’t you know what your desk mate’s homework looks like? You actually dared to copy hers?! Do you not want to study physics anymore? If you’re having difficulties, can’t you come to the teacher? Look at this notebook of yours. Almost everything is wrong! Sigh!”
Su Linye, a fake top student and true academic disaster, lowered her head in shame.
Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Gu Feng writing several deafeningly huge words on paper with a face full of indignation:
What do you mean?!!! Is my homework that bad?!!!!
Su Linye lowered her head even more in shame, nearly shrinking into her collar.
Gu Feng did not get the chance to continue her crusade before the teacher called her up too.
The physics teacher’s face had turned green. “Gu Feng, I admire your courage in doing your homework yourself, but what is going on with you writing the density of water as urine? When did I ever teach you to write it like that?”
The moment those words came out, the students below collapsed into laughter.
Gu Feng lowered her head in equal shame. At the same time, she secretly shifted over to Su Linye’s side and whispered breathily, “Isn’t that urine?”
“…” Su Linye also whispered, “This is physics, not biology.”
Gu Feng was astonished. “There’s no urine in physics?”
After careful thought, Su Linye gave a cautious answer. “Seems like there isn’t.”
Gu Feng: “…”
She slowly shifted back.
The physics teacher calmed himself down a little. “I thought this was only an online joke. I never expected I’d encounter it myself one day. Thank you for broadening your teacher’s horizons.”
Gu Feng did not dare accept such praise. “Teacher, you’re too polite.”
Physics teacher: “…………”
His head throbbed. “You two, go stand at the back and listen.”
Su Linye: “…………”
She had been here for two days, and there had not been a single day when she was not punished by standing.
She carried her homework and went to the back with a bitter, grudge-filled expression.
She expressed deep guilt toward her desk mate and “sponsor mother.”
At the same time, she secretly swore in her heart that she would definitely study hard.
This determination lasted all the way until the second period began.
Listening to the biology lesson at the front, she grew drowsy and even had a dream, until the teacher’s piece of chalk flew over.
Su Linye was driven to the back again.
Su Linye: “…………”
She sighed deeply.
Clearly, her grades in her previous life had been decent. But after all, she had already been in university for two years, and had long since returned all her knowledge to her teachers. Picking it up again was so hard.
Besides, in her previous life, she had studied pure humanities. She had never studied physics or biology at all.
Su Linye sighed again.
So embarrassing.
She held up her book and began listening seriously.
Then she sadly discovered that she seemed unable to understand it.
After class, Su Linye returned to her seat in low spirits.
Gu Feng was crunching on potato chips. “Desk mate, what’s wrong with you? Why have you been in an even worse state than me these past two days?”
She offered the chips over.
Su Linye had no appetite. “Eat them yourself. I’m going to study properly.”
Gu Feng said, “Oh, okay.”
Su Linye took out her first-year textbooks and began burying her head in bitter study.
The sun gradually rose overhead, and the final class ended.
Su Linye closed her textbook dizzily, struggling her way out of the ocean of knowledge.
In a daze, she stood up to go to the cafeteria.
Gu Feng stretched, then turned back and saw her desk mate walking like a drunk. “Linye?”
“Ah?” Su Linye turned back too forcefully and stumbled underfoot.
Gu Feng hurried over to support her, nervous. “What’s wrong?”
Su Linye’s whole body was limp and weak, perhaps a lingering aftereffect from swimming through the sea of learning. “I’m fine. Maybe I studied too hard.”
Gu Feng stared at her. “Really fine?”
“Really fine.” Su Linye nodded repeatedly to affirm her own words, and her head spun again. But it only lasted an instant, and she steadied herself.
Gu Feng stared at her for a few more seconds.
Someone called her from the other side. “Feng, going to eat?”
Su Linye was taller than her, so she patted her head with affection. “Go on, Feng.”
Seeing that she did not look like anything was wrong, Gu Feng relaxed and swatted her hand away. “Don’t touch my head casually. If I don’t grow tall in the future, I’ll blame you.”
Su Linye looked her up and down. “There’s still room to grow?”
Gu Feng smacked her. “I’m leaving. Going to eat.”
Su Linye said goodbye to her, then went out to meet Xi Panpan and head to the East Cafeteria together.
Perhaps it was from overusing her brain, but Su Linye remained in a floaty state the whole time. She decided to eat something tasty and extravagantly bought half a portion of shrimp.
Then she accurately found Lu Jiang and Qin Yu’s table and sat down.
Qin Yu glanced at her food. “Yo, adding something extra today?”
Su Linye reached out to peel a shrimp. “Every now and then, one must live a little.”
Qin Yu was eating noodles, and her eating posture was very elegant. “You’re living half a little.”
“Half still counts as living.” Su Linye peeled one and placed it into Lu Jiang’s tray across from her.
Lu Jiang’s hand paused, and she lifted her eyes to look at her.
Su Linye’s eyes were bright. “Try it.”
Beside them, Qin Yu had not even finished stuffing the noodles into her mouth before the corners of her lips lifted, full of teasing. “Why give the first one to Old Jiang?”
Su Linye said, “She’s pretty.”
Qin Yu burst out laughing. “Am I not pretty?”
Su Linye said, “It’s different. Your prettiness doesn’t hit my aesthetic point.” She very considerately comforted her. “But you really don’t need to worry. What’s meant to be yours will still be yours. No one else can steal it away. Don’t get randomly jealous.”
Qin Yu snorted in amusement. “What jealousy would I be eating? I’ll definitely meet someone willing to peel shrimp for me. When that time comes, I’ll blind all your eyes with my public display.”
After Su Linye bantered with her, she looked back and saw that the shrimp was already gone. Her eyes curved. “Was it good?”
Lu Jiang said, “Edible.”
Su Linye let out a breath of relief, feeling that she had moved one step closer to clinging to the protagonist’s golden thigh.
Then she peeled another and gave it to Xi Panpan.
The latter smiled obediently. “Thank you, Boss.”
There were not many shrimp in half a portion to begin with, and after giving out two, that meant there were two fewer. She even gave one to Qin Yu.
Qin Yu raised her brows but said nothing.
After finishing the shrimp, Su Linye felt completely satisfied. Her head no longer felt dizzy, her legs no longer hurt, and her whole body glowed with renewed vitality.
Then she walked out the door and was hit by the sunlight.
Su Linye’s mind blurred again. Her legs went so weak that she nearly planted herself straight into the ground. In a daze, she thought:
This is bad. Maybe I’m a vampire and can’t see sunlight.
But very soon, Su Linye had no mind left to make fun of herself.
She completely lost consciousness.
Lu Jiang, who had not walked far, paused slightly and glanced back.
Qin Yu was pinching a leaf and playing with it back and forth like a pinwheel. Seeing Lu Jiang stop, she asked, “What’s wrong?”
“Did you smell something?”
Qin Yu took a deep breath and gave an answer. “The smell of the sun roasting the earth?”
Lu Jiang swept her a glance.
“All right, I get it. Not that.” Qin Yu said, “Don’t tell me you smelled someone’s pheromones?”
Lu Jiang’s brows furrowed slightly. Her sleeves were habitually rolled up, revealing a section of fair, white arm. She said lightly, “Impossible.”
Qin Yu got tired of playing with the leaf and casually tossed it aside, letting the wind blow it away. “Why impossible? Maybe one day a miracle will happen and your illness will get better. Have some faith.”
The faint scent scattered into the air. Lu Jiang’s expression remained calm.
She had never believed in such vague, illusory things.
Su Linye woke up in the infirmary.
Above her was a white ceiling. In the white hanging lamp at the center, there were countless tiny insects that had been roasted to death by the heat.
Her mind went blank for two seconds before she slowly sat up.
Xi Panpan, who had been watching her the entire time, leaned over worriedly. “Boss, do you still feel bad?”
“I don’t feel bad anymore.” Su Linye comforted her. “I’m fine. Don’t worry.”
The school doctor came over holding a form. Looking at the scene of one of them being nervous and the other comforting her, she smiled. “Such deep friendship. When this friend of yours carried you here, she looked so panicked, and her lips were so pale that I was afraid she was going to faint too.”
Xi Panpan seemed a little embarrassed, and a flush spread across her face. “Teacher Li, how is Boss?”
Doctor Li said, “Are you children in a gang or something? What’s with ‘Boss’?”
“Don’t worry. It’s just a minor cold from being startled and exposed to the cold wind, along with accompanying symptoms caused by hormonal changes during puberty. No need to be nervous.”
Doctor Li gave a few more instructions, then lifted the curtain and went out.
Xi Panpan looked as if she had let out a huge breath of relief. Then, as if remembering something, she grew worried again. “Boss, what happened with being startled?”
Su Linye felt like she had slept too much and her mind was not clear. She patted her forehead. “It’s nothing. I ran into a few people trying to rob me.”
“Rob you?! Then, Boss, you…”
“I ran. They didn’t manage to rob me.”
She joked to tease her, “After all, I’m so poor. I only had a few coins in my pocket. No one would care about that.”
Xi Panpan’s unease did not lessen. “Will they keep blocking you?”
“Maybe. That’s why I moved into the dorm.”
Xi Panpan grew happy. “That’s good. Then you don’t have to worry about people causing trouble anymore.”
Su Linye said, “Yeah.”
After school that afternoon, Su Linye packed up her things and went to the library.
Yuanhua was very large. The library was on the east side, hidden behind several tall trees, a grand building rising from the ground.
Su Linye climbed the steps, put on her work badge, and was led to the service desk by a teacher.
“Xiao Lu, this is the new volunteer. Show her the ropes.”
The person who had been lowering her eyes to look at the computer and check inventory lifted her head. Her ink-dark eyes were calm. “All right.”
Su Linye’s eyes widened. “Lu Jiang?”
She placed both hands on the marble counter. “You work part-time here too?”
Lu Jiang said, “Student council. Earning credits.”
“Come in.”
Su Linye looked left and right, found the small gate, and went inside. “How long have you been here?”
Lu Jiang said, “Not long.”
She had no real intention of chatting and directly got to the point.
She shifted half a step to the side so Su Linye could see the screen. “This is the library system. When you click in, you can see the different modules.”
Her hand stretched across the desk in front of the two of them.
Su Linye noticed that the sleeves Lu Jiang often rolled halfway up had been lowered today, and the zipper of her school uniform was also pulled all the way to the top. It locked away that small trace of outward unruliness, turning her into the most proper, restrained top student on campus. The sense of distance she carried became even stronger.
Lu Jiang casually clicked through a few things, letting Su Linye see the contents inside.
“The library is buying books soon. First, we need to organize purchasing directions based on borrowing data, then conduct a survey of students’ preferences.”
Su Linye came back to herself and turned her gaze back.
Yuanhua’s library was huge, so it naturally had many books. It was also open to the public, which made the system’s contents even more massive.
Hearing this, she turned her head. “Preference survey?”
Lu Jiang shifted slightly back. She did not speak, only opened another program. Inside was a half-finished survey form.
Su Linye was incredulous. “We have to make this ourselves too?”
Lu Jiang said, “It won’t generate itself.”
Su Linye asked, “Can’t we use the old one?”
Lu Jiang said, “Keep pace with the times.”
Su Linye: “………… This really knows how to torment people.”
After she said that, she saw a faint, fragmented smile flash through Lu Jiang’s eyes.
Su Linye thought her complaint had resonated with her.
The next second, she heard the other girl say, “Tomorrow afternoon, distribute and collect them class by class.”
Su Linye: ???
“The whole school?”
“The whole school.”
“Only the two of us?”
“Otherwise?”
“…………”
Can I just give up the one thousand yuan?
