After Unbinding the Simp System, I'm Targeted by the Villain - Chapter 31
Ji Zhou, who had been squatting in the restroom for a long time, stared at Yu Chucheng’s face the moment he returned.
“What’s wrong with you? Do you have a fever?”
Yu Chucheng answered categorically, “No.”
“Then why is your face so red? It looks like it’s about to bleed.”
Yu Chucheng’s spine went stiff. “…”
He suddenly felt it would have been better to just say he had a fever.
The girl who had been in the room earlier had also been sent to the hospital for injections of suppressants and sedatives; it had taken quite a while for her to regain full consciousness.
After finishing her police statement, Xu Mengshu, still worried, specifically went out to buy some sweets to visit her.
The girl was alone in the ward, guarded by a female officer outside. A few small media outlets, having received tips from onlookers, rushed over, hoisting cameras and trying to interview the victim despite the officer’s interference.
Xu Mengshu strode forward, grabbed the two people at the very front by their collars, and yanked them backward with a powerful tug.
“Hey, hey, hey! What are you doing!”
“Careful, don’t break my camera!”
“Who are you?”
Xu Mengshu blocked the door, snapping irritably, “What does it matter who I am? If you want a scoop, why don’t you go interview those two animals? If I see you pointing a lens at the victim again, I’ll smash that camera of yours!”
“This is a society ruled by law! Listen to this, Officer, do you hear her?! Hey, why are you letting her in?!”
However, the female officer remained standing straight at the door, staring ahead expressionlessly.
Inside the ward, the girl’s eyes were vacant until Xu Mengshu sat by her bed. Only then did she snap out of it.
She was around the same age as Xu Mengshu, a young girl in the prime of her youth, and quite pretty; she had even applied delicate makeup today.
“I’m sorry… I didn’t know he had a girlfriend. I…”
The girl lowered her head in panic, fiddling with her fingers helplessly. Mid-sentence, she suddenly choked up, biting her lower lip hard, but she couldn’t stop the tears from falling.
The police had already been by to get the facts. She had only recently learned what she had almost suffered today.
Xu Mengshu opened the dessert bag, took out a delicious small cake, and held it out to her. “Why are you apologizing? It’s not our fault for liking a scumbag. He’s the one who went to great lengths to disguise himself as a good person. They are the ones in the wrong.”
The girl froze slightly, then slowly reached out to take the cake.
After today’s events, Xu Mengshu wasn’t sure if she counted as the scumbag’s girlfriend or if she, like this girl, was just another victim kept in the dark.
But none of that mattered anymore. The law placed great importance on the protection of Omegas. Although the scumbag and his bald accomplice hadn’t succeeded, it was enough for them to face serious consequences. They wouldn’t be able to go out and ruin other Omegas ever again.
“You’re an Alpha, he’s an Omega, and you’re renting an apartment together to study these books?”
In the apartment, Duan Huaijin picked up the book splayed on the floor—How to Spend Your Heat Period Peacefully—and raised an eyebrow meaningfully at the explicit illustrations of positions inside.
Yu Chucheng scrambled to snatch the book back, but Duan Huaijin was tall; a simple lift of his arm put it out of Yu Chucheng’s reach.
“It’s a misunderstanding! A huge misunderstanding!” Yu Chucheng felt so embarrassed he wanted to leap from the fifth floor.
Forty minutes ago, he had finally been cleared to leave the hospital. Duan Huaijin, carrying his medicine, had escorted him and Ji Zhou back to the apartment.
The moment they walked in, they saw the books scattered in the foyer. Before Yu Chucheng could stop him, Duan Huaijin knelt to tidy them up, only to see the contents.
Yu Chucheng’s face flushed a deep crimson from shame. He blurted out, “That’s not mine, it’s Ji Zhou’s!”
Ji Zhou, suddenly thrown under the bus, waved his hands frantically. “I bought it for him!”
Combined with the fact that Ji Zhou’s bag was still hanging on a chair—complete with the “Mini-Ji Zhou” plushie Xu Mengshu gave him for his birthday—the signs pointed strongly toward them living together. Thus, Duan Huaijin had arrived at a “wonderful” misunderstanding.
The heat that had just left Yu Chucheng’s face surged back up.
Ji Zhou beat a hasty retreat to a safe distance a split second before Yu Chucheng exploded.
“You stay right there!” Yu Chucheng was fuming. If he’d known, he would have thrown those books away the moment he arrived this morning.
The apartment was spacious, and since Yu Chucheng had just moved in, the living room only had a few large pieces of furniture. Ji Zhou used these as cover, darting left and right to dodge Yu Chucheng’s attacks.
Ji Zhou laughed while mocking him, “How did your speed get so slow after becoming an Omega? You can’t even catch me in this tiny space.”
Yu Chucheng was seething, wishing he had a knife to chase Ji Zhou with. “Don’t you dare run!”
Hearing this, a spark of inspiration hit Ji Zhou. He slid like a water snake right behind Duan Huaijin.
Duan Huaijin effectively became a human shield—one that automatically evaded attacks.
Yu Chucheng tried to skid to a halt, but the rug slipped beneath his feet. He instinctively reached out to grab the arm of the person in front of him, falling flat on the floor and taking Duan Huaijin down with him.
Ji Zhou: “!!”
Duan Huaijin: “…”
Yu Chucheng’s head was still a bit dizzy. He was kneeling right in front of Duan Huaijin, who had his legs bent and was supporting his upper body with his elbows.
Ji Zhou’s eyes widened, and he quickly covered them with his hands. See no evil, see no evil.
However, unable to suppress his intense curiosity for gossip, he parted his fingers like a “thief,” leaving everything perfectly visible.
The distance between the two was suddenly non-existent. Amidst their mingled breaths, Yu Chucheng scrambled to get up, but he forgot his fingers were injured. The pressure of pushing off the floor sent a jolt of pain so sharp that sweat broke out on his forehead. His survival instinct caused his hand to slip.
Duan Huaijin wrapped one arm around his waist and hoisted him up from the floor.
“It’s all your fault!” Yu Chucheng fired at Ji Zhou.
Ji Zhou, having been handed a “giant pot” of blame, coughed awkwardly. He realized if he didn’t clear things up, Yu Chucheng might hire a hitman tonight.
“That… Duan Huaijin, Yu Chucheng and I aren’t renting together, and we’re definitely not living together. Those books… I really did buy them for him, but it was just to improve his self-protection awareness.” To prove his point, he pulled out a room key from his pocket that was completely different from Yu Chucheng’s. “I rented the place across the hall.”
Duan Huaijin gave a soft “Mm.” “I know. You’re best friends.”
Ji Zhou, delighted to be certified as Yu Chucheng’s “best friend,” patted Duan Huaijin on the shoulder. “You’re one of our good friends now, too. By the way, we’re planning to go to the Sunrise Summer Resort next week. Why don’t you come along?”
Yu Chucheng glared at him. “That invitation was for me. It’s enough that I’m taking you; now you’re playing the generous host with my gift?!”
Ji Zhou: “Aw, come on, we’re all bros. What’s mine is yours.”
Yu Chucheng: “What if I say no?”
The Sunrise Summer Resort was Zhang Hanzhou’s territory. If Duan Huaijin went there, Yu Chucheng felt something unpredictable would surely happen.
Duan Huaijin looked calmly at Yu Chucheng. “It’s okay if I’m not welcome. I have part-time work next week anyway, so I probably won’t have time. If you need anything, just call me.”
Yu Chucheng choked.
Ji Zhou didn’t sense the strange atmosphere and said airily, “Two days won’t hurt your part-time job. Just take leave. The tickets for that resort will be more expensive than two days of work later on. You have to seize such a great chance to ‘freeload’!”
Duan Huaijin shook his head slightly. “I’ll pass.”
Seeing his persistent refusal, Ji Zhou didn’t push further.
Duan Huaijin brought over the bag left at the door, taking out the medications one by one to explain how to use them to Yu Chucheng. “This one is for external use, twice a day. This is a spray for the wound on your head; don’t touch water for two hours after spraying. This one is for scars; use it once the wound has scabbed over. You won’t need it just yet…”
Yu Chucheng looked at Duan Huaijin with a complicated expression. Truly, a person having too high a moral compass wasn’t always a good thing—for instance, seeing how meticulously Duan Huaijin was instructing him on his medication made him feel a bit guilty.
“Remember to bring your blockers and suppressants when you go. And don’t eat spicy or stimulating food; the doctor said you need to watch your diet.”
Yu Chucheng looked away and muttered, “I didn’t say you weren’t welcome.”
Duan Huaijin stopped speaking.
Yu Chucheng hesitated. It’s just for two days. Right now, Duan Huaijin and Zhang Hanzhou don’t even know who the other is. I shouldn’t overthink it.
“Fine.” He looked up at Duan Huaijin. “Come with us.”
