As She Wished - Chapter 13
At the end of April, the event that had been warming up at the bar for half a month was finally almost fully arranged. Before getting off work, Fu Jing specially reminded Tao Xian, “Remember to call Gu Qingci over tomorrow.”
“Why?” Tao Xian glanced sideways at her and said with a bright smile, “Looks like our little Fu Jing is preparing to outshine everyone again tomorrow?”
Fu Jing was slightly embarrassed. “Who could I outshine…”
Tomorrow, the bar was holding a dance floor event.
Fu Jing was someone who could even make school broadcast calisthenics look like a glitching robot, so she had absolutely no intention of going onto the dance floor. She only planned to wear her work uniform and seriously mix drinks at work.
Fu Jing said as a matter of course, “Because tomorrow is May Day Labor Day! Shouldn’t she hurry up and labor?”
She was usually so idle. Even if it was just to join in the holiday atmosphere, she should at least come over a little.
After understanding what Fu Jing meant, Tao Xian burst out laughing. “That reason is very sufficient. I’ll try calling her.”
—
The next day,
Fu Jing discussed her paper with her professor at school for a long time, then ran into a former teacher and was pulled off to eat. By the time she rushed to the bar, she had just barely avoided being late.
“Fu Jing, you’re here.” Sharp-eyed Ye Xinyi saw her and leaned over, smiling as she lowered her voice to report, “Your beauty Gu Qingci actually came. It clearly isn’t Thursday. Surprised? Unexpected?”
Fu Jing nodded energetically. “Surprised! Unexpected!”
She hurried upstairs, stood at the doorway, and looked inside. She even pretended to ask, “Why did you come today?”
Before Gu Qingci could speak,
Tao Xian ruthlessly exposed her with a smile. “Weren’t you the one who said we absolutely had to call her over to labor?”
Gu Qingci lifted her eyes and looked at her without revealing anything.
Tonight, she was not wearing makeup. Her face was fair and clean, her features delicate and soft. She wore a simple pure black T-shirt and jeans, her long hair falling straight and loose.
She looked like a young, beautiful university student.
Yet under the soft, dim lighting, because her brows and eyes were too exquisitely sharp, she faintly carried an unattainable aura.
She lightly swirled the wineglass in her hand.
Like an elegant princess invited to a cocktail party.
Fu Jing immediately shook her head and changed her words. “What I meant was, Princess Qingci can come participate in labor supervision. Supervision!”
Gu Qingci: “…”
Tao Xian: “Pfft!” She could not help turning to look at Gu Qingci’s expression, her tone full of teasing. “How come you came in a hurry today without makeup, yet you’re being praised as a princess instead?”
Gu Qingci raised a brow, took a sip of wine, and lifted her eyes to look at Fu Jing with a cool expression. “Little brat, don’t call me random things.”
How had she been demoted to little brat?
Fu Jing said aggrievedly, “Okay, then I won’t call you random things. Can I call you Qingci darling?”
“Gu Qingci,” Gu Qingci corrected her.
“Sister.”
“…”
Fu Jing returned to the original version. She felt a little disappointed, but still stuck to Gu Qingci with great enthusiasm and said, “Then you can call me Xingxing. That’s my nickname. I used to be called Fu Jingxing, but later, because I was always getting sick, Grandma took me to a temple to burn incense and pray to Buddha. We ran into a fortune-teller who said I was too young and couldn’t suppress that name, so one character was changed…”
Her tone was cheerful. Regardless of whether the other person cared or not, she mumbled everything out.
Gu Qingci quietly drank and never interrupted her.
Tao Xian’s gaze moved between the two of them, watching the show with great enjoyment. After a while, she raised her glass and drank, then continued speaking to Gu Qingci about what they had been discussing earlier. “What do you think of that suggestion?”
Gu Qingci nodded. “Your management ability is very good. Whatever you want to do, there’s no need to ask me about it at all. You should have some confidence in yourself.”
“All right.” Tao Xian shrugged. “Isn’t it just that there’s a mountain beside me, so I always want to lean on it a little? Since you were young, you’ve always been iron-willed about your goals and have never failed. I’ve already started treating you like a god.”
Fu Jing listened and looked at Gu Qingci with utmost admiration.
She had originally been worried that Gu Qingci might feel bored working only two hours a week, but it turned out this had been her goddess’s dream since childhood…
Fu Jing said, “People who can persist in their ideals are the most amazing!”
“That’s right.” Tao Xian agreed, then turned her eyes and asked, “Little Fu Jing, will you keep doing research in the future too? You said you’ve liked physics since you were little.”
Fu Jing answered, “Mm.”
Tao Xian sighed a little. “That’s really amazing. When I was little, my dream was to become a dancer, but I only thought about it. Now even doing the splits is difficult for me.”
Fu Jing did not think that was anything. “When I was little, my first dream was to become a swordswoman. Now I don’t even dare kill a chicken.”
“…”
A strange angle of comfort.
Gu Qingci laughed softly.
Fu Jing hurriedly said, “Of course, Princess Qingci, if you like people who keep holding on to their original dreams, I can go pick up a sword and kill a chicken right now.”
Gu Qingci was choked by her words. “Is that what a swordswoman does?”
A few seconds later, she helplessly added, “I told you not to call me random things.”
“Oh, okay.” Fu Jing smiled and nodded. Then she suddenly asked directly, “Sister, then what kind of person do you like? Tell me.”
Gu Qingci stared steadily at her for a few seconds and said solemnly, “I like people who are silent and don’t talk much.”
“…”
Fu Jing pressed her lips together. Like a little quail, she immediately shrank her head and placed a hand by her mouth, making a motion as if obediently zipping it shut.
Indicating that she completely understood.
Lu Jiuping ran upstairs to call them. “Why are you old masters still chatting? The customers are about to overflow. Come help! Hurry up!”
“Oh!” Fu Jing quickly followed her downstairs.
—
The dance floor was packed with people dancing. The light was dim, the lamps flickering. If one stood slightly farther away, their brows and eyes could not be seen clearly. From afar, almost everyone looked slender and graceful, their bodies swaying along with the rhythm of the music.
Fu Jing stayed at the bar counter mixing drinks, her movements efficient.
Very quickly, she freed Lu Jiuping from her frantic busyness.
Lu Jiuping finally had time to chat. “How did you know this bottle was tequila? It was just transferred over from the warehouse. Jiji said before that this brand of tequila is pretty rare and easy to confuse with others. You actually grabbed it and used it right away. You must usually know a lot about liquor.”
Fu Jing shook her head and picked up a cloth to wipe the droplets from the surface of the ice bucket. “I recognized it because there are words written on the bottle.”
“You recognized it by reading the words? You can actually understand those flowery, slanted foreign scribbles?!”
Foreign scribbles…
Fu Jing instantly went silent.
She handed the cocktail she had just finished to the customer at the bar. Just as she picked up the tray, the customer’s bag in front of her suddenly toppled over. The bag was open, and the things inside clattered messily into the bar area.
Fu Jing: “…”
Holding the tray, she carefully recalled and reviewed the situation while bending down to help pick up the items. She had indeed not touched the customer’s bag at all.
“I’m really sorry!”
The customer hurriedly smiled. Her face was heavily made up, mature and gorgeous. As she brushed back loose strands of hair, she awkwardly explained, “There’s a problem with the design of this bag, and I stuffed too many things inside. It can fall over on its own even without being touched…”
“It’s okay.” Fu Jing good-temperedly handed the things over and even pulled out a napkin for her. Suddenly, her hand paused when she saw a familiar card. “You’re from Songjiang University?”
“Mm. Why?” The customer took her student card, asked first, then saw Fu Jing’s pretty, delicate face clearly. “Don’t tell me you are too?”
Fu Jing smiled. “Mm.”
“Aiyo, a little junior.” The customer’s tone immediately became much friendlier. She was no longer in a hurry to drink and leaned closer, staring at Fu Jing as she said, “I’m from the Department of Mathematics in the College of Science. I’m a third-year undergraduate. What about you? A freshman?”
“Sister,” Fu Jing answered honestly, “I’m from the Department of Physics. I’m a second-year graduate student.”
“…”
—
When Gu Qingci came downstairs, she happened to see the two of them exchanging WeChat.
She passed by the bar and sat down at the empty corner at the far side, asking for a glass of whiskey.
At this moment, not many people were ordering drinks anymore.
Fu Jing chatted with her schoolmate for a while and watched her enter the dance floor. Then she quickly poured a glass of whiskey and brought it over to Gu Qingci. “Why did you come down?”
Gu Qingci raised a brow. “Am I not allowed to come down and sit?”
Fu Jing smiled and said, “Of course you can. If you come down, I can see you!”
“…”
Gu Qingci did not speak again and took a sip of wine.
Fu Jing propped up her face, her elbow resting on the counter, and looked at Gu Qingci without blinking. So she truly focused on watching her.
Gu Qingci’s brows and eyes were lowered. Her lips were pale pink. Her fair, makeup-free face reduced her sense of distance, yet she remained breathtakingly beautiful. Her long eyelashes were distinct, like a small fan.
Every time she blinked, it brushed against Fu Jing’s heart and made it itch.
Gu Qingci put down her glass and lifted her eyes, looking at Fu Jing with a smile that was not quite a smile. “Do you like looking at me that much?”
Their gazes met.
Her eyes were clear in black and white and truly too beautiful. When she looked at someone attentively, it was very easy to give that person the illusion of being gazed at with deep affection.
Fu Jing could not come back to herself, and she did not even want to treat it as an illusion.
“Mm.” She was a little embarrassed. “…If you don’t like it, I won’t look.”
Gu Qingci did not answer. Instead, her tone suddenly lowered slightly as she asked, “Kid, why are you giving your contact information to people who come to hit on you?”
