As She Wished - Chapter 4
The next day.
Fu Jing got up early. After class, she went to the College of Humanities to find Qin Zijin. She sat with Qin Zijin in the last row, listening to the professor lecture about the underlying system of ancient Chinese literary theory.
After finally enduring until class ended,
Qin Zijin gathered up her handouts and casually tucked them into her book. “What is it? I can tell you’ve been holding it in.”
Fu Jing nodded miserably and told her everything that had happened at the bar last night in one breath.
After she finished, she complained, “If you had been beside me at the time, I definitely wouldn’t have said something so brainless!”
“So you didn’t get her contact information, and you immediately stood up and called her blind?!” Qin Zijin doubled over laughing, pounding the table as she wiped away tears. “Truly, after three days apart, I must look at you with gouged-out eyes!”
“I didn’t come to you to hear sarcastic remarks.” Fu Jing ground her teeth and grabbed Qin Zijin by the shoulders, shaking her. “Qin Zijin, hurry up and give me ideas! Hurry!”
“What ideas? You said she smiled after hearing it, didn’t say anything, and left. She clearly didn’t take it to heart at all.”
Fu Jing emphasized, “She left in a hurry because she got a phone call.”
“Then be a little sweeter the next time you see her.” Qin Zijin said indifferently, “In this kind of situation, it’s actually a good thing. At least you’ve left an impression on her. Having an impression is the first step to love!”
After a few seconds of silence,
Fu Jing nodded solemnly. “That makes sense.”
“Mm.”
“She definitely likes me a little too.” Fu Jing raised her hands to cradle her face. Her round almond eyes were full of smiles, and she shyly indulged in her own thoughts. “Otherwise, if she was just talking, why did she suddenly lean so close to me?”
Qin Zijin looked speechless. “I don’t want to hurt you. But have you considered that it was because the music in the bar was too loud, and people couldn’t hear each other clearly, so everyone likes leaning close when they talk?”
Fu Jing: “…”
Fu Jing abruptly lowered her head and buried her entire face in her book, ignoring her.
Qin Zijin silently looked at her for a few seconds. “You wouldn’t be silently chanting in your heart, ‘Not listening, not listening, the turtle is chanting scriptures,’ would you?”
“…”
Fu Jing suddenly lifted her face and complained pitifully, “Why are you born with mind-reading powers… while I can’t learn them even if I die…”
Qin Zijin could not help clicking her tongue. “You flatter me. Guessing what you’re thinking is far too easy. How can that be called mind-reading? Learn some facial-expression management, Young Lady.”
Fu Jing thought about it, then still smiled. “I think she definitely likes me, because when I went over to strike up a conversation, her eyes kept looking at me.”
“Once again, I don’t want to hurt you.” Qin Zijin rolled her eyes. “But you had already walked right in front of her. If she didn’t look at you, was she supposed to raise her head and look at the sky, lower her head and look at the ground, then turn away and look at the air?”
Fu Jing: “…”
Qin Zijin apologized. “Sorry. Stop glaring at me!”
“I can do it anyway.” Fu Jing took a small cardholder out of her bag and lowered her eyes as she pulled out a card. “I saw someone online say that if you can spend seven figures pursuing someone, you’ll definitely succeed.”
Qin Zijin sincerely commented, “You’re like the foolish son of a landlord.”
“I’m not.” Fu Jing’s tone was proud. “At most, one-third of the money in here came from Mom and Dad. I earned the rest myself through investments, financial management, scholarships, and things like that.”
Physics was her career ideal, and mathematics was her hobby. Fu Jing was also a person with extremely low material desires. She played with investments and financial management purely because she enjoyed the sense of achievement that came from seeing numbers enter her account.
So over the years, Fu Jing had been like a little pixiu, guarding her allowance, New Year money, and living expenses, only earning and never spending, constantly using big money to make small money, then making that money make even more money… until she had saved up a shockingly wealthy little treasury.
Fu Jing slightly lifted her chin. “After so many years of painstaking saving—”
Qin Zijin quickly followed up, “Only to have a woman empty your entire family fortune in one day.”
Fu Jing clicked her tongue. “That doesn’t matter either!”
“It’s not just about money.” Qin Zijin suddenly sighed. “I’m afraid that if your first relationship is with a complicated person from society, you’ll easily get tricked emotionally.”
Fu Jing did not understand. “Why would I get tricked emotionally? I already like her in the first place. She doesn’t need to trick me.”
Qin Zijin was stunned by her internal logic.
After sorting it out for a long while, she felt that the ways of the world were too winding and complicated, and explaining those twists and turns to this little dazed cutie was too difficult.
So she simply gave up. “Then go have fun. Just remember that you’re a customer. You’re only spending money as a consumer. Don’t end up being played in circles by someone else.”
Fu Jing tilted her face. She did not quite understand the deeper meaning in Qin Zijin’s words, but still nodded and agreed. “I know!”
“Let’s go.” Qin Zijin began packing her things. “Let’s eat.”
Fu Jing reminded her, “There’s still one more class.”
“He already finished taking attendance. Let’s slip away!”
And so, the two of them carefully bent their waists and snuck out from the back of the classroom, avoiding the gaze of the old professor who was standing by the window in the ventilation area, smoking during the break. Then they quickly entered the stairwell.
The campus was peaceful and quiet. The spring sunlight was bright, and there were very few people on the way to the cafeteria.
The two of them walked leisurely. Someone came toward them.
“Babe,” Qin Zijin’s eyes suddenly lit up. She turned her face, wanting to lean close to Fu Jing’s ear and say something.
Who knew she would miss?
Fu Jing instinctively stepped back and dodged, even saying strangely, “What did you want to say? Why did you suddenly get so close to me?”
Qin Zijin was angered by her agile instant-dodge reaction. “May I ask why you dodged me?”
After a few seconds of silence,
“Well…” Fu Jing’s tone was innocent. “It was an involuntary instinctive reaction.”
“I only wanted to say,” Qin Zijin took a deep breath for a few seconds, then could not hold back from roaring, “that this guy walking over in that ugly blue windbreaker is my type, and I was going to let you see how I strike up a conversation!!!”
Fu Jing: “…”
The boy in the blue windbreaker paused, then hesitantly turned his head. “…?”
—
At night,
Fu Jing happily walked to the bar, her mind full of Qin Zijin’s instructions: As long as you’re thick-skinned and keep leaning closer, you can pursue the beauty successfully!
This was also highly consistent with Jiang Jianhua’s guidance.
That afternoon, Qin Zijin had loudly said one second that the clothes someone was wearing were ugly, yet the next second, she could still run over with a shy face and get that person’s contact information.
If Fu Jing had originally been a little uncertain about whether this principle was correct, after seeing that scene with her own eyes, she no longer had even the slightest doubt: being thick-skinned really was the correct method of pursuit!
“…”
“That kid came again today.” When Tao Xian saw Fu Jing, she immediately went upstairs to find Gu Qingci and reported with a grin, “Gu Qingci, your charm is way too great.”
Gu Qingci was looking through some documents. She did not raise her eyes, nor did she respond to Tao Xian’s words.
“Every time, I think there’s no way she’ll come again next time.” Tao Xian sighed a little. “But she keeps coming. She doesn’t complain either. She just sits there drinking tea and waiting for you. Are you really not moved at all?”
Gu Qingci finished reading the documents and put them back into her bag.
After tidying up and standing, she finally lifted her eyes to look at Tao Xian. “In the future, if there’s nothing major, there’s no need to call me over.”
Tao Xian shrugged. She was actually not surprised. She made an OK gesture and said, “Understood, Boss. I’ll notify you to come take a look when I can’t hold on anymore and the bar is about to close down.”
In all these years, she had never seen Gu Qingci look at anyone twice. She was like her name—cold, beautiful, and capable of displaying a thousand different forms under different lights.
Fine wine could not enchant her. Cigarettes could not addict her.
She clearly possessed capital as vast as mountains and seas, yet she was so pure-hearted and desireless that she had no particular preferences or hobbies.
Even when she smiled and chatted pleasantly, those pitch-black eyes of hers were extremely still.
During the first few years Tao Xian knew her, she could not help fantasizing that Gu Qingci was a professional assassin in the darkness, with many terrifying corpses hidden in the basement of a luxurious country villa.
She really should go and fully persuade Fu Jing to give up.
As Tao Xian pondered, she thought she could introduce Fu Jing to beauties who looked similar to Gu Qingci. Although there were not many of that type, it was not as if there were none.
Gu Qingci’s steps paused. Suddenly, she said, “Go waive the charges for her table.”
“…Huh?” Tao Xian did not react.
Gu Qingci said again, “Also refund the money from before.”
This time, Tao Xian understood, but she completely could not comprehend it. “Why?”
“What why?” The expression on Gu Qingci’s face seemed a little impatient. She glanced at Tao Xian, though her tone was very calm. “We can’t scam a kid out of her money.”
“…”
Tao Xian was suddenly speechless.
Couldn’t they?
Not only had she scammed her, she had been scamming her continuously for half a month.
Tao Xian followed her downstairs in confusion. Suddenly, a bartender at the counter ran over and reported, “Sister Anjiu, Jiji said something came up at the last minute and he can’t come.”
“What did you say?”
Tao Xian instantly exploded. She almost could not maintain her usual sweet and gentle voice as she cursed loudly, “That bastard. After being late for so long, now he simply tells me he can’t come?! Where am I supposed to find someone to cover his shift?!”
“Sister Anjiu… please think of something.”
“What damn solution could I have?”
After Tao Xian finished cursing, she took out her phone and prepared to contact someone to solve the problem.
Suddenly, a soft voice cut in. “I can mix drinks. Let me help!”
“…”
Fu Jing had been taking a straw at the bar counter and happened to hear their conversation, so she immediately raised her hand and moved in front of Tao Xian to volunteer.
“You can mix drinks?” Tao Xian’s tone was doubtful.
Fu Jing nodded obediently. “Mm.”
Previously, she had asked the bartender Jiji whether she could borrow the book placed beside him to take a look. Jiji had casually agreed. After Fu Jing brought it back to her booth and opened it, she discovered that there was also an employee training manual from the bar tucked inside, along with information related to cocktail mixing.
Sitting around had been truly boring.
Fu Jing had carefully read it from beginning to end twice and had more or less memorized it. The materials were clear, and in addition to occasionally watching Jiji’s actual operations, she felt there was nothing difficult about it.
Tao Xian still wanted to say something, but then she remembered Gu Qingci’s instructions.
Wonderful. She had been worrying about whether she should refund the money, how much she should refund, and how she should return the money to Fu Jing.
Now, if she pulled Fu Jing into the team… Her spending would not count, and they would not have to pay her wages. Wouldn’t the account balance out all at once?
A perfect win-win situation!
Tao Xian’s eyes lit up. She decided that as long as Fu Jing could work even a little, she would let her cover the shift. Finally, she confirmed one last time, “You really can mix drinks? Mix one for me first and let me try it.”
“Sure.” Fu Jing walked straight behind the bar. “What do you want to drink?”
“Long Island iced tea.”
Fu Jing’s gaze slowly swept over the various liquors and decorations at the bar, memorizing the position of each item. Next, she simply had to follow the steps from that manual.
Although she was not exactly skilled at first, her sequence of movements was smooth and orderly, relaxed, steady, and composed. Watching her mix a drink gave off a pleasing sort of beauty.
Very soon, a glass of Long Island iced tea was finished.
“Try it.”
“…”
The surrounding staff were all somewhat stunned by the contrast she displayed. For a moment, no one spoke.
