Feng Aotian And I Are A Match Made In Heaven - Chapter 1
“The level assessment begins now. First up, Xiao Hao.”
A deep, resonant voice rang out as a light breeze swept over the neatly arranged pavilions. Eight main roads extended from the enormous central platform, with the plants and buildings laid out according to the order of the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches.
At that moment, many youths dressed in dark teal robes surrounded the raised platform at the end of the roads. On the platform, an elderly man in white held a thick register in his hands and called the youths below up one by one.
As soon as his voice fell, a young boy stepped out of the crowd. Taking long strides with his head held high and chest out, he walked onto the platform, then stood not far from the white-robed elder with a confident expression.
“Stand inside the circle at the very center.” The white-robed elder raised his eyes slightly and cast a brief glance at the arrogant-looking boy, his tone neither warm nor cold.
Hearing this, the boy frowned, a faint trace of defiance in his eyes. But he said nothing and followed the elder’s instructions, standing in the designated spot.
The stone platform beneath his feet stood about three meters above the ground. Countless grooved lines radiated outward from its center, marked with measurement scales. The base was supported by wooden pillars and decorated with flowing water and blooming flowers, making it distinctive yet solemn.
The moment the boy moved into the center, the flowing water below the platform abruptly stopped. Brilliant golden specks of light appeared before everyone’s eyes, then gathered around the boy. As time passed, the golden radiance grew increasingly intense, and even the grooves across the stone platform inexplicably lit up.
However, the light within the grooves stopped extending once it reached a certain mark.
“Xiao Hao, pure Metal affinity, Jia Realm Level Six!”
At the elder’s loud announcement, the youths below the platform all revealed expressions of disbelief.
“Xiao Hao is already Jia Six? Doesn’t that mean he’s already qualified to enter the inner sect and cultivate there?”
“His grandfather is the Fourth Elder of the inner sect. Is it really that strange for him to advance this quickly?”
“But his talent really is incredible. During last year’s assessment, wasn’t he only Jia Three? He advanced three levels in a single year?”
“Three levels in one year really is impressive!”
……
Listening to everyone’s discussion, Xiao Hao unconsciously raised his already-lifted chin even higher, his brows and eyes brimming with smugness. A ten-year-old boy simply had no ability to hide the little bit of pride swelling inside him.
“Silence! Next, Xiao Moran.”
Just as the noise reached its peak, the elder spoke up at the perfect moment. The instant his words fell, every voice abruptly ceased. Everyone seemed rather intimidated by the elder on the platform.
Then, amid the silence, a slender girl with a quiet and refined air stepped onto the stone platform.
Her pretty face still held traces of childishness, but her features were exceptionally delicate. Beneath gracefully curved brows was a pair of deep black eyes. Every movement she made was elegant and poised, while a faint hint of proud sharpness lay hidden in her gaze. She embodied the spirited confidence of youth and was exceptionally eye-catching.
Naturally, the moment such a graceful figure appeared, she drew countless gazes—including that of someone concealed high in a tree not far away.
“Female Lead Number One. Not bad, not bad.”
Looking at the glittering golden words “Female Lead” floating above Xiao Moran’s head, Chen Anqing nodded in satisfaction. Then she spread her five fingers and reached into the air. A faint light flashed, and half a watermelon with a spoon stuck into it appeared in her hand.
As the sound of Chen Anqing eating watermelon rang out, blue light also began glowing on the platform. The radiance gathered and intensified, and after she had taken only two bites of watermelon, it had already surpassed the brightness Xiao Hao had produced earlier.
“Xiao Moran, pure Water affinity, Jia Realm Level Eight.”
“Hiss!” The elder’s voice rang out once more, followed by a synchronized chorus of sharp inhales from the youths below. Yet, for once, the elder’s expression softened. His gaze repeatedly swept over Xiao Moran before suddenly turning kindly and benevolent.
“Your talent is excellent. Keep working hard.”
“Mm, I will. Thank you, Elder.” The young girl’s voice was clear and pleasant, like a murmuring spring, and as she spoke, she bowed to the elder.
Then, under everyone’s dumbfounded gazes, Xiao Moran slowly descended from the platform and walked step by step toward a short, thin figure.
Countless admiring and envious gazes followed her. But the moment she stopped beside that person, as though everyone had coordinated beforehand, those gazes uniformly turned disdainful and disgusted. Quite a few people even looked away outright, preferring not to see them at all.
“Next, Xiao Yun.”
The white-robed elder on the platform spoke again. Under everyone’s scornful and contemptuous gazes, Xiao Yun stiffly made her way onto the platform.
The same blue light appeared, but compared with Xiao Moran’s just moments ago, it was dimmer by far more than a single degree.
“Xiao Yun, pure Water affinity, Jia Realm Level One.”
The moment “Jia Level One” was announced, snickers and jeering laughter rose one after another from below the platform. Everyone looked at Xiao Yun as though she were nothing more than a joke, but the young girl merely lowered her head in silence and slowly left the testing platform.
Xiao Moran glanced worriedly at Xiao Yun, biting her lower lip with pearly teeth. In the end, she still chose to follow after her, intending to offer some comfort.
However, the warning from the white-robed elder on the platform came before her words of consolation could.
“I must remind all of you that if you still have not reached Jia Realm Level Six by the age of twelve, the clan will no longer provide you with any resources. When that time comes, either you enter the inner sect and continue cultivating, or you will be thrown out.”
His words successfully reduced the laughter somewhat. Around one-fifth of the youths looked nervous, but even so, that did nothing to stop everyone from openly or secretly mocking the person who had just left.
Naturally, this entire scene also fell into the eyes of Chen Anqing, who had been munching on watermelon. But now, she was no longer in the mood to enjoy the show.
Although Xiao Yun’s head was lowered and gloomy clouds practically seemed to gather around her, in Chen Anqing’s eyes, the four words “Child of Destiny” above her head shone far more brightly than the words “Female Lead” above Xiao Moran’s. Chen Anqing let out a long sigh, then raised her head and glanced at the four words “Ultimate Villain” floating above her own head.
Sigh. What a sin.
With a snap of her fingers, she stored the half-eaten watermelon back into her spatial storage. Chen Anqing abruptly lost all interest in watching the spectacle. In a flash, she appeared atop a mountain thousands of li away. Finding the spot where the mountain winds blew most fiercely, she sat facing the gale and tried to clear her head.
Chen Anqing had been a voice actress in the modern world. Half a month ago, her boss had tossed her the script for an audio drama adapted from a fantasy novel, and she had been cast as the ultimate villain.
She had never expected that after working overtime to finish recording the whole thing and going home to catch up on sleep, she would open her eyes to find her Simmons mattress replaced by an ice bed that left her shivering uncontrollably. Outside the door, a group of people dressed entirely in black were kneeling in perfect rows, and the moment they saw her, they loudly cried out, “All hail the Sovereign!”
Looking more closely, she saw bright red words reading “Villain” glowing above every single one of their heads. Then she raised her gaze and found that the words above her own head were different—glittering golden words that read “Ultimate Villain.”
She had immediately gone into shock and shut herself away for five whole days before finally realizing that she had become the very villain she had just finished voicing.
Although the script she had received while recording contained only the villain’s scenes, that did not prevent her from knowing that her ending involved getting killed by a Long Aotian named Xiao Yun.
After accepting the fact that she had transmigrated, Chen Anqing prepared herself and came to see what this Long Aotian was currently like, only to arrive just in time to witness the scene from earlier.
She had witnessed history—the iconic opening scene of a classic Long Aotian novel.
Still, there was at least one thing Chen Anqing found somewhat comforting: the protagonist was still just a little kid right now. Killing her, the villain, would only happen much later in the story. There were at least several years left, more than enough time for her to slowly think things through.
The continent Chen Anqing had transmigrated into was called the Great Wilderness. Despite the name, however, there was hardly anything barren about it. Deserts and wastelands made up only a small portion of the land; most of it consisted of mountains, rugged terrain, and a considerable amount of forest. It had very little in common with the name “Great Wilderness.”
The air of the Great Wilderness Continent was saturated with a power known as qi. It could cleanse the meridians and marrow, allowing living beings to grow stronger. Ordinary creatures that absorbed qi would transform into magical beasts or spiritual plants, while humans had developed a complete cultivation system around it, along with corresponding levels.
As the greatest villain of them all, Chen Anqing had naturally already reached the highest realm, the Gui Realm. Put simply, Level One Hundred was the maximum, and she was already Level Ninety.
It had taken her quite some time to gain control over this power. She had only just begun to experience the joy of soaring through the skies, burrowing through the earth, and shattering mountains and rivers with a finger. Then she thought about her miserable future—her head separated from her body—and grief filled her heart, leaving her utterly heartbroken.
Although that group of fanatical underlings with “Villain” floating above their heads looked rather sinister, they were actually all adorable little sweethearts. Every day, they would send her fresh fruit, powerful weapons, delicacies from all over the continent, and countless fascinating ingenious gadgets.
Most importantly, she was ridiculously powerful. She could fly through the heavens, travel underground, teleport instantly, and simply beat to death anyone she found displeasing.
If she had never experienced such a wonderful life or possessed the ability to act however she pleased, then fine. But to have gained all this only to lose it again would be unbearably tragic. If she did not keep an eye on that damned Long Aotian, her heart would remain permanently suspended in anxiety every single day.
“Sovereign, since that brat is so weak, why not simply kill her now, then wipe out her entire clan to eliminate any future trouble?” The cold wind howled, whipping her black hair through the air. Just as a bleak and desolate mood began to settle over Chen Anqing, a woman’s voice sounded beside her.
Without turning around, Chen Anqing merely shook her head and sighed. “You don’t understand. If only I really could kill her.”
But the radiance of “Child of Destiny” above Xiao Yun’s head was even brighter than the light of Chen Anqing’s own “Ultimate Villain.” If she attacked one second, who knew whether she might be the one who died the next?
Naturally, Chen Anqing could not say that last part aloud. Her expression merely grew a little uglier before she finally turned her head.
The newcomer was dressed entirely in black, her dark hair tied high, with a few loose strands caught by the fierce wind and swept across an androgynously handsome face. Her features were exquisite, her posture straight and tall, like a sword on the verge of being drawn from its sheath. Unfortunately, far too much gloom lurked within her eyes, clashing slightly with her cool, austere air.
But she was still extremely beautiful—so beautiful that even the glowing red word “Villain” above her head looked as though it were providing her with perfect lighting.
Chen Anqing paused for two seconds, marveling inwardly while staring unblinkingly at the newcomer. The joy of admiring a beautiful woman washed away the sadness from moments earlier, and Chen Anqing promptly pulled herself together.
“All right, Run Yu. Go back and take care of your own work. You don’t need to follow me here.” The mountain wind had blown her face slightly numb. Chen Anqing stood up and casually waved a hand, creating a wind barrier that blocked all the fierce gusts rushing through the mountain pass. Then she waved Run Yu away.
“Yes.”
Without asking any further questions, Run Yu immediately bowed respectfully to Chen Anqing upon receiving the order. The next second, she pushed off lightly with her feet and flew several li away without making a sound, until her figure vanished completely.
And Run Yu was far from the only beautiful, obedient, and capable subordinate Chen Anqing had.
If even she was destined for a bad ending, then the fates of these minor villains were easy enough to imagine.
No. Absolutely not.
At that thought, Chen Anqing stopped lamenting her fate. She resolved to carry her surveillance through to the very end and figure out what type of Long Aotian Xiao Yun was. If she turned out to be the kind who relentlessly courted death, then Chen Anqing would have no choice but to find some way to kill her.
But if she was the kind who repaid kindness, then if necessary, Chen Anqing could take the emotional route and win her over.
