Foreseeing the Future: The Scheming Film Queen and I Got Married - Chapter 25
Dong Yao stared at the message Gu Shiqiu had sent and froze for a second.
Before Dong Yao could respond, the other side sent another message right after: I have something to deal with now. Let’s chat later.
Dong Yao: Okay, go work.
After about a minute, Dong Yao sent her another message: Thank you.
After sending it, she felt that it seemed too distant and polite. Since two minutes had not passed yet, she tapped withdraw.
After hesitating again and again, she sent a thank-you sticker instead, adding a line along with it: Next time, I’ll treat you to braised pork belly.
That should be fine. This was enough.
Dong Yao let out a long breath, as if she had just completed some major task.
Gu Shiqiu did not reply. She had probably gone to work and had no time to look at her phone.
Compared with Gu Shiqiu, why did it make Dong Yao seem extremely idle?
Dong Yao found the sudden thought amusing.
Bored, she held her phone and looked here and there. She browsed Gu Shiqiu’s Weibo homepage once. There was almost no activity, the same as her Moments.
The only difference was that Weibo still had some posts, but only when she endorsed a brand, or when a drama, movie, or new song she starred in was released, would she post a promotional Weibo.
After scrolling back and forth, Dong Yao did not see a single selfie.
After browsing for a while, Dong Yao felt there was not much meaning to it and exited. She opened her chat app and, out of boredom, began scrolling through her old Moments.
The farther back she scrolled, the more she felt that her past self had truly been like an idiot. Why had she posted captions like this? Did she think she was very literary?
It really looked stupid.
Dong Yao quickly scrolled through them. When she saw one post, her hand suddenly paused.
It was a post from three years ago: Recently watching a drama. The main character keeps eating osmanthus cake. Ah, I want to eat it too.
The attached pictures were a screenshot from the drama she had been watching at the time, as well as a picture of osmanthus cake she had found from who knew where.
Osmanthus cake?
Dong Yao’s gaze landed on the final piece of osmanthus cake left on the corner of the table.
Could it be…
Gu Shiqiu had given her that box of osmanthus cake because she had seen this Moment?
Dong Yao lowered her head and looked at her phone. The post had been made three years ago. Although Dong Yao did not post on Moments every day, she still posted once every few days.
Over the past three years, she had posted too many Moments to count. To find this particular osmanthus cake post, if one started scrolling from the beginning, it would take at least thirty-something minutes to reach it.
Would Gu Shiqiu spend that much time scrolling through her meaningless, even boring Moments, then discover that she had once wanted to eat osmanthus cake, and actually give that thing to her?
Thinking about it…
Impossible.
Dong Yao shook her head. If she really thought that, she would be narcissistic and confident to an outrageous degree.
Gu Shiqiu giving her osmanthus cake was completely a coincidence. After all, even Dong Yao herself did not remember that she had once posted this Moment. How could Gu Shiqiu have given it to her because she saw a post from three years ago?
Dong Yao laughed it off, instantly feeling that the thought that had suddenly appeared was a little ridiculous.
She continued scrolling. The more she scrolled, the more she felt like she was witnessing her own social death… so embarrassing. What kind of magical nonsense had she written?
She could not bear to delete them. After all, they were “memories of youth.” Silently, Dong Yao set her Moments to be visible for only three days.
Suddenly, a figure rushed in through the door.
Sweaty and panting, it was obvious she had run all the way here.
“Little Yaozi!” Lin Yunyi planted both hands on the table. “Weibo, Weibo! Did you see it?”
Dong Yao looked at this person making a fuss and roughly guessed what it was.
“Gu Shiqiu actually commented on your Weibo. My god, ah, help, Gu Shiqiu! Gu Shiqiu commented on your Weibo. How could something like this happen…” Lin Yunyi was already excited enough to wave her arms and legs around, and her words were all jumbled.
Dong Yao looked at her calmly. Just one comment made her this excited. If one day she found out that Gu Shiqiu was Dong Yao’s future partner, how would she react?
She would not pick up a knife and take Dong Yao’s dog life, right?
A little uneasy, Dong Yao asked, “Let me ask you something.”
Lin Yunyi ignored Dong Yao’s words and continued talking to herself. “Did the god of luck possess you? You watched a concert and got chosen to go on stage for interaction. Then your Weibo got commented on by Gu Shiqiu. You two even followed each other. This is practically like a dream.”
“I’m talking to you,” Dong Yao raised her voice.
Lin Yunyi still ignored her.
Helpless, Dong Yao did not care whether she was listening or not and asked directly, “If one day Gu Shiqiu starts dating someone, what would your reaction be?”
Lin Yunyi said, “Why are you asking that?”
Dong Yao said, “Just asking.”
Lin Yunyi thought for a moment. “She’s not that young anymore. It’s normal for her to date. Although I’d be sad, I’d still give my blessing.”
Dong Yao nodded thoughtfully. Good. This girl was not an extreme fan.
Lin Yunyi’s eyes suddenly sharpened. “My Shiqiu is studying up for her new drama. Online, there are tons of artists and muralists more famous than you. Why did she just so happen to choose you?”
Dong Yao avoided her gaze. “As you said before, the god of luck possessed me.”
Lin Yunyi nodded. “True. It’s not like you really know my Shiqiu. Right, that damn scammer from before—you’re not chatting with her anymore, are you?”
Dong Yao smiled. “No, I’m not.”
Lin Yunyi said, “That’s more like it. Your brain doesn’t work very well, so stop dealing with those scammers. Be careful or you’ll get dragged in.”
Dong Yao rolled her eyes at her. “Your brain is the one that doesn’t work well.”
Just then, a woman’s voice came from outside the door. The person called, “Excuse me, are there still noodles to eat?”
Dong Yao and Lin Yunyi both looked outside at the same time.
She was not from the town. Her face was unfamiliar. They had never seen her before.
Lin Yunyi’s eyes were sharp as she looked the woman up and down. She wore heavy makeup. She was good-looking, but the makeup was too thick. Her clothes, pants, and the bag on her body were all well-known brands.
Dong Yao stood up. “Yes, but this is a breakfast shop. If you want noodles right now, only egg noodles are left.”
The woman walked in, glanced at the shop’s simple decor, then at the old electric fan whirring loudly. Her brows furrowed.
What a lousy place.
The woman glanced at the tables and chairs. Seeing that they were fairly clean, she endured her discomfort and sat down.
“Then one bowl of egg noodles,” the woman said.
Dong Yao agreed and walked toward the kitchen. Lin Yunyi closely followed her inside.
Dong Yao skillfully boiled water and put the noodles in.
Behind her, Lin Yunyi lowered her voice and whispered, “Did you see the clothes and bag that woman is wearing?”
Dong Yao did not understand. “What about them?”
“They’re all big brands. The really expensive kind.” As Lin Yunyi spoke, she looked outside through the window.
The woman was wiping the tabletop with a tissue.
Lin Yunyi said, “She just doesn’t have much temperament. She looks a bit like the kind of pretentious nouveau riche.”
Dong Yao found it funny. “All right, stop talking about this and that. You gossip all day and still never get enough. I’m busy. Go back to your own house.”
Lin Yunyi clicked her tongue. When she left, she also took away the lipstick Dong Yao had recently bought and had not yet had time to open.
Dong Yao gritted her teeth. If she were not taking into account that there was someone in the shop, she would have charged out and pulled Lin Yunyi’s hair!
Dong Yao quickly finished making the noodles, sprinkled scallions on top, and brought them to the table. “Your egg noodles. Enjoy. There are pickles and chili oil over there. Add them according to your taste.”
The woman did not even look at the noodles placed on the table. Her gaze had been stuck on Dong Yao the entire time. When Dong Yao walked to the side, that person still kept staring.
Dong Yao frowned. Why was this person so strange…
“Your name is Dong Yao, right?” the woman suddenly asked.
Dong Yao looked at her in confusion. “You know me?”
Dong Yao thought back and confirmed that she did not know this woman. She had definitely never seen her before either.
“I don’t know you, but I came here to see you,” the woman said.
“To see me?” Dong Yao became even more confused. “What are you looking for me for?”
The woman crossed her legs and raised her head slightly. “Don’t worry. I don’t have any ill intentions. I’m just here as someone who has been through it before, kindly giving you a warning so you won’t follow in my footsteps.”
Dong Yao found this baffling. “What do you mean?”
“Recently, haven’t you been quite close with Gu Shiqiu?” the woman asked with a cold laugh.
Dong Yao pressed her lips together and looked at her warily, saying nothing.
“Even if you don’t say it, I know. Recently, you’ve been in contact with her all along. And some time ago, she even came here to see you. Am I right?” the woman looked at her and said.
Dong Yao’s brows furrowed even more tightly. Who was she? How did she know these things?
The woman seemed to have read her thoughts. “Don’t worry about how I know. The only thing you need to know is that I’m here to help you.”
Dong Yao looked the woman up and down. Judging by her tone and her face, she did not look like a good person.
Dong Yao said, “What exactly do you want to say? If you have something to say, say it directly.”
“Do you think Gu Shiqiu is a pretty good person? Gentle and considerate, and when something happens, she does her best to help you?” The woman stood up and walked a few steps closer to Dong Yao.
“Under that surface, what kind of person is she? I wonder if you’d be interested in learning about it from me. There are many interesting things that you might really want to know.”
The woman was full of confidence. She thought the other party would definitely be very interested and eager to know these things. Unexpectedly…
Dong Yao was displeased. “What kind of person Gu Shiqiu is, her matters, and what she has done—I can just ask her myself. Why would I learn it from you? Who even are you? I don’t know you.”
The woman’s brows shot up.
Dong Yao said, “You don’t look like a good person to me either. You speak so strangely, all insinuations and sarcasm. I’m not selling you noodles anymore. Leave. I won’t see you out!”
The woman became angry. “Do you know what shady things Gu Shiqiu has done behind people’s backs? If you keep associating with her, don’t end up being chewed until not even your bones are left…”
Before the woman could finish speaking, Dong Yao’s expression darkened, and she immediately became unhappy. “Who are you saying did shady things? Say that about her again and try me!”
The woman took a deep breath and calmed down. “Can you listen to me calmly? I’m not your enemy. You don’t need to hold such deep hostility toward me.”
Dong Yao was too lazy to pay attention to this person. She picked up the noodles on the table and, at the same time, with a loud smack, threw the rag onto the table. It was obvious she was driving her away. The movement seemed to say: If you still don’t leave, this rag won’t be thrown on the table—it’ll be thrown onto your face.
The woman who had come to deliberately sow discord was furious. She had never met someone like this, someone completely unmoved and extremely stupid.
Not caring whether Dong Yao listened or not, the woman raised her voice and spoke on her own. “Gu Shiqiu and I were high school classmates. Back then, she…”
“Yu Fei!”
At the entrance, an icy tone rang out, cutting off the woman’s remaining words.
Hearing the voice, Dong Yao turned back to look.
Standing at the doorway was someone she had not seen for many days.
It was Gu Shiqiu.
