- I’m A Scumbag Woman—I Flirt, But Never Marry [Quick Transmigration]
- Chapter 20 - The Wife’s Revenge on the Scumbags (20)
Early that morning, Wang Jianfei cornered Gu Shuofeng inside the office pantry.
At this hour, everyone had already fetched their water and begun working. The chances of anyone entering the pantry were relatively low.
Gu Shuofeng had deliberately created this opportunity for him.
“What is it? Did you need something?”
Wang Jianfei wore the neatly pressed suit and gleaming leather shoes that Xu Tinglan had prepared for him before everything happened.
He looked Gu Shuofeng up and down.
A round-neck T-shirt, pencil pants, slightly upturned eyes, and a face without makeup.
She was clearly the same person, yet she felt completely different.
As a rough man, Wang Jianfei couldn’t describe exactly what had changed. Like most straight men, he couldn’t tell whether a woman was wearing makeup unless it was extremely heavy.
He didn’t notice that Gu Shuofeng’s face was bare. He only felt that she appeared even more alluring and mature than usual while possessing an innocence she had never shown before.
Much of the anger rushing through him involuntarily subsided.
Wang Jianfei leaned against the pantry doorway, watched the corridor, and lowered his voice.
“What exactly is going on?”
Gu Shuofeng glanced at him before continuing to prepare her coffee and pour hot water as though nothing were wrong.
“What do you mean? Are you asking about the police statement that night?”
She knew perfectly well that wasn’t what he meant, yet she answered with complete seriousness.
“We didn’t return until the early morning. Why else would I have taken yesterday off? I was so exhausted that I simply couldn’t come to work.”
Wang Jianfei frowned.
“That isn’t what I’m asking. Why is everyone in the company saying you’re getting married? Who are you marrying? Why didn’t I know?”
Understanding apparently dawned on Gu Shuofeng. She nodded slightly and blew across the foam on her coffee.
“Oh, that. I made it up.”
“Why would you invent something like that for no reason?”
Gu Shuofeng glared at him.
Whether angry or reproachful, her natural allure emerged without effort.
“Why do you think I invented it? It was all because of you!”
“Me?”
“Yes, you! If you hadn’t carelessly exposed yourself at the pharmacy downstairs and allowed someone to see the scratches on your face, would I have needed to make up such a lie?”
Wang Jianfei instinctively touched his scratched cheek.
The scratches hadn’t been serious to begin with, and he had applied ointment before bed the night before last. By the time he came to work yesterday, they were almost invisible.
Otherwise, he wouldn’t have shown up at the office.
So those little bastards had been furtively glancing at him for the past two days, not because he had been absent from work for a day and a half, but because of this?
Wang Jianfei’s cheeks burned.
His entire body suddenly felt uncomfortable.
The more humble someone had once been, the more desperately they clung to the dignity they had finally acquired after rising to success.
With a dark expression, Wang Jianfei demanded, “Were those two women at the pharmacy spreading rumors?! I’m going to fucking report them for slander!”
Gu Shuofeng briefly explained what had happened.
“Xiao Ye and the others kept speculating about the mistress’s identity. I had to strike first. What if they began suspecting us?”
Wang Jianfei snorted coldly.
After checking the corridor again, he lowered his voice even further and grabbed Gu Shuofeng’s arm.
“No matter how you explain it, you only did it to protect yourself! You’ve eliminated everyone’s suspicion of you, but they still suspect me!”
Gu Shuofeng held her coffee cup in one hand. His abrupt movement caused several drops to spill.
She instinctively lowered her eyes toward it.
It was a Wedgwood coffee cup, its surface decorated with magnificent golden floral patterns symbolizing wealth and splendor.
Chen Xiyao couldn’t have afforded the complete porcelain set even if she had spent an entire year without eating or drinking. She had coquettishly persuaded Wang Jianfei to buy it, and it earned her considerable admiration from her coworkers.
To flaunt the cup, Chen Xiyao—who had never enjoyed coffee—drank at least two cups every day whenever she was at work.
Gu Shuofeng thoughtfully stroked its smooth, glazed rim and smiled without revealing her intentions.
“Has your temper been particularly fiery recently? Can’t you calm down and consider such a simple principle?
“As the saying goes, you must catch both adulterers together. If they only have you, then no matter what they say, it remains nothing more than a rumor.
“If I’m safe from suspicion, aren’t you safe too?”
Wang Jianfei visibly froze.
When he heard yesterday that she planned to marry, he had nearly slammed the office door and skipped work to confront her. He thought she had genuinely made a cuckold of him and hadn’t considered the matter carefully.
Now that she had analyzed it this way, her explanation seemed rather reasonable.
He calmed down slightly.
“Where did you go yesterday? Why was your phone turned off every time I called?”
“Didn’t I just tell you? I was sleeping at home.”
“Then why did no one answer when I visited?”
Gu Shuofeng looked surprised.
“What time did you come?”
“After work.”
“Oh~~ You mean last night. I took Brother Li from across the hall out for dinner. My phone was charging at home.”
Her neighbor across the hall was a boxing coach who owned a fairly large gym.
The gym closed at ten in the evening, and he generally didn’t arrive home until after eleven. Wang Jianfei had visited at approximately seven, so the chances of them encountering each other were practically zero.
Wang Jianfei’s brows immediately knitted.
“Couldn’t you have taken him to lunch? Why did it have to be dinner?”
“He had to work during the day. Besides, I couldn’t wake up after giving my statement so late the previous night.”
“Then couldn’t you have chosen another day? What does it look like for an unmarried man and woman to eat alone?”
He could keep one foot in two different boats, yet she couldn’t even eat a meal with someone else?
Ha!
Gu Shuofeng sneered internally.
“We went to a restaurant, not a hotel room. The restaurant was filled with people. How were we an unmarried man and woman alone together?”
Her words carried a heavy scent of gunpowder.
It was a tone Chen Xiyao would never have used.
Caught off guard, Wang Jianfei froze for three seconds. Just as he prepared to become angry, Gu Shuofeng lowered her eyes, and even the tips of her lashes seemed filled with grievance.
“You were the one who told me not to take him for a late-night meal. You said I should thank him the following day instead.
“I listened and invited him to dinner the next day, but he said he was only available after work. What else was I supposed to do?”
This was Chen Xiyao’s customary manner of speaking.
Yet when the words came from Gu Shuofeng, they lacked Chen Xiyao’s deliberately affected sweetness. Her soft coquettishness felt entirely natural, making it difficult not to soften toward her.
Of course, Gu Shuofeng would never lower herself to please a scumbag. She wouldn’t do so even for the sake of completing her mission.
She was merely laying the foundation for what she intended to say next.
Wang Jianfei’s anger instantly disappeared, and his tone softened.
Leaning against the doorframe, he released a long breath.
“My wife left. She said she needed time away to clear her head. She probably won’t return for ten days or half a month.
“I’ll go to your apartment tonight. The past few days have been so chaotic that I’m nearly exhausted to death.”
Gu Shuofeng looked astonished.
“Your wife left? That can’t be right. What normal woman would simply pack up and leave immediately after discovering her husband’s affair, before she had even uncovered the mistress’s identity?”
Wang Jianfei rubbed his temples.
“I know what kind of person she is. She never lies, and she’s exceptionally naïve. Her innocence was the reason I chose to marry her in the first place.
“Otherwise, I never would have married her and allowed everyone to claim I relied on her family connections. I’m clearly successful because of my own ability!”
Ability?
He certainly was capable—
Capable of relying on women to rise through the ranks!
First, he had relied on Xu Tinglan to accumulate considerable wealth, work experience, and personal connections. Later, he would rely on Chen Xiyao to trade sexual favors with various bosses and secure business deals.
His ability was truly extraordinary and transcendent!
Gu Shuofeng said, “Of course I know you’re capable, but that isn’t the important point right now.
“I’m a woman too, so I understand women best. If she could simply leave under these circumstances, it means she has already formed certain ideas.”
“What ideas?”
“I can’t tell you exactly, but I can make a general guess. For example: ‘This man betrayed me. I can’t continue living with him. I want a divorce.’”
The instant she mentioned divorce, Wang Jianfei’s expression changed.
“She wouldn’t dare!”
Gu Shuofeng slowly shook her head and clicked her tongue. Her vivid red lips made her resemble an enchantress capable of bewitching the human heart.
“Who can say for certain when it comes to something like this? It’s always better to prevent trouble before it happens.”
