- Chapter 22 - The Wife’s Revenge on the Scumbags (22)
“What?”
Wang Jianfei froze.
“What do you mean by that?”
Gu Shuofeng arched an eyebrow and smiled.
“I’ll pretend I’m pregnant and confront your wife. What do you think she’ll do?”
Wang Jianfei’s gaze shifted uneasily.
His expression suddenly darkened, and the look he gave her became ice-cold.
“Chen Xiyao, what exactly are you suggesting?! I’m warning you not to entertain any unrealistic ideas!”
Gu Shuofeng’s dark eyes widened slightly, appearing as clear and innocent as though they had just been lifted from the water.
“What unrealistic ideas?”
Wang Jianfei choked.
He suddenly had an intense premonition that keeping his mouth shut would be best.
“You know what I mean!”
“I don’t. What exactly are you trying to say?”
Wang Jianfei replied irritably, “Whatever it is you’re thinking, forget it. You don’t need to involve yourself in this matter!”
Gu Shuofeng stared blankly at him.
Her eyes visibly reddened at remarkable speed. Her crimson lips moved several times before curving into a miserable smile.
Her smile made Wang Jianfei uncomfortable all over.
“Enough. Go back to work. We’ll discuss this at your apartment after work.”
Gu Shuofeng sniffled and desperately suppressed her tears. Lowering her head, she murmured bitterly, “I understand. I finally understand everything.”
She handed her coffee cup to Wang Jianfei.
“Wait here for me.”
Without allowing him to object, she pushed past him and left the pantry.
Wang Jianfei reached out to grab her, but she shook him off.
He didn’t dare create a scene in the corridor and could only remain hidden inside the pantry, holding the cup impatiently.
“I’ve already been away from my office for too long. I need to go back! I’m leaving this here, all right?”
Without turning around, Gu Shuofeng repeated the same two words.
“Wait there.”
Wang Jianfei watched her disappear into the office and cursed under his breath.
He looked hesitantly at the porcelain cup in his hand, wondering whether to leave it on the counter and walk away or wait for her to return.
He didn’t need to hesitate long.
Footsteps soon sounded in the corridor again.
Gu Shuofeng had returned.
The moment she entered, she pushed a bank card into his hand without saying anything else.
Wang Jianfei was completely bewildered.
“What are you doing?”
Gu Shuofeng raised her chin slightly and stared coldly at him. Every part of her expression, from her brows to the corners of her lips, radiated determination.
“This contains all my savings. I’m returning them to you.
“You bought this cup, so I’m returning that too. When I get home, I’ll sort through everything you’ve given me and return all. Of. It!”
Wang Jianfei clicked his tongue in exasperation.
“Will you stop making trouble? We’re inside the company!”
Gu Shuofeng smiled desolately.
“That’s right. This is your job, which is more important than your life. Your job comes first, your wife second, and I, Chen Xiyao, am nothing!”
With a smack, Wang Jianfei slammed the precious coffee cup onto the pantry counter, sending coffee splashing everywhere.
“Are you determined to make a scene inside the company?!”
“Make a scene?”
Gu Shuofeng smiled and shook her head.
Her tear-filled eyes looked ready to overflow. Stray hair lay scattered against her pale face, and even her lips seemed to have lost some of their color.
“Think whatever you like. I’ll tell you only one thing.
“From the first day I became involved with you, I never intended to interfere with your existing life. Whether you believe me or not, marriage is nothing more than a piece of paper to me. I never cared about it.
“All I wanted was for you to treat me well.
“But none of that matters anymore.”
Wang Jianfei rolled his eyes impatiently.
“I believe you! Is that enough? Fine! Take the card back, and your cup— Hey! Don’t leave! Come back!”
Gu Shuofeng had already been standing near the doorway. The moment she turned, she entered the corridor.
Wang Jianfei didn’t dare stop her.
When she walked away without looking back, his anger surged again.
She ordinarily seemed so sensible. Why was she behaving so unreasonably today?!
Wang Jianfei looked at the expensive coffee cup on the counter, most of its contents spilled.
Everyone in the company recognized it and knew it belonged to Chen Xiyao. He absolutely couldn’t take it into his office.
Even though he knew that this single cup had cost several thousand yuan, he still couldn’t take it.
He would leave it here.
Perhaps someone who saw it would deliver it to her. Or perhaps she would return and retrieve it herself.
She was only throwing a temporary tantrum. How could she possibly bear to abandon such an expensive cup?
As for the bank card…
Wasn’t this merely an indirect way of asking him for money?
Did she think he couldn’t see through such a simple scheme?
He would transfer some money to her account and give the card back after work.
Wang Jianfei didn’t take the matter seriously.
Taking the bank card with him, he returned to his office. He first transferred twenty thousand yuan into Chen Xiyao’s account before beginning his work.
He was reviewing a report when a commotion suddenly erupted outside.
“Wow! She really did find herself a wealthy man. That cup cost several thousand yuan, yet she smashed it without hesitation!”
“It wasn’t only the cup. I just saw her submit her resignation letter to Human Resources. She’s packing her belongings right now!”
“What? Who are you trying to fool? At the very least, she needs to hand over her work first. Besides, aren’t employees required to give at least one month’s notice?
“If she resigns and leaves immediately, this month’s salary will be taken as compensation for breaching her contract. She won’t receive a single cent. It’s almost the end of the month. Is she really that stupid?”
“Hey, that’s why people say she found herself a wealthy second-generation heir. Someone like her wouldn’t care about a mere thousand yuan.”
“She really is fortunate. When will I find myself a fair-skinned, rich beauty?”
“Isn’t that simple? Ask our boss for advice. He’s an expert at living off wealthy women!”
“Shh! Do you not want your bonus this month?”
Wang Jianfei slammed the report onto his desk.
He silently memorized the identity of the bastard who had accused him of living off a woman.
Within two months, he would find a dignified, legitimate-sounding excuse to drive that man out of the company without paying him a single cent in compensation!
As for everyone else who had joined in and made jokes about him, he wouldn’t deduct their monthly bonuses.
He would wait until their year-end bonuses and make them cry for their mothers and fathers!
Wang Jianfei waited until the discussion outside had completely subsided before leaving his office.
Everyone immediately pretended to be extremely busy.
They didn’t know that when their boss was alone inside his office, he never completely closed the door. The supposedly excellent soundproofing was therefore nothing more than decoration.
Wang Jianfei approached Xiao Liu’s desk.
“How were those after-sales cases for President Zhang’s shipment handled?”
Xiao Liu immediately stood and smiled solicitously.
“They should already be resolved. I’ll visit the Customer Service Department and check right now.”
Wang Jianfei straightened his suit and replied sternly, “There’s no need. I’ll go myself. Continue with your work.”
With that, he left the office.
In truth, he could have gone directly to the Customer Service Department without explaining anything.
But guilty people were always nervous. If he didn’t offer an excuse, he feared his employees would see through his true intentions.
The Customer Service Department was two offices away.
Before Wang Jianfei reached it, he saw two female employees emerge together and walk in the opposite direction toward the restroom.
The women linked arms and chatted cheerfully, unaware that Wang Jianfei was behind them.
“She only announced her engagement a couple of days ago, and now she’s resigning. It looks like she intends to become a full-time wife. I’m so jealous.”
“What’s there to envy? Women need financial independence. If she relies entirely on her husband, he might become tired of her and throw her away one day.
“That’s especially true of wealthy men. They’re full of faithless schemes.”
“That makes sense. If a woman wants status in her family, she needs to possess the economic advantage. Merely supporting her husband and raising children won’t accomplish anything.”
“Speaking of that, don’t you think Chen Xiyao is rather ruthless? That cup cost several thousand yuan, yet she smashed it without hesitation.
“She even said that no matter how much she liked a cup, she could casually throw it away if it hurt her. What do you think she meant?”
“Who knows? Perhaps that wealthy heir gave her an even better cup.”
“Maybe she broke it for good luck. I’ve heard older people say that when you leave somewhere you’ve lived or worked for a long time, breaking an object can shatter the place’s bad luck so that it won’t follow you somewhere new.”
“Oh, keep being superstitious! Who smashes a cup worth several thousand yuan to get rid of bad luck? Wouldn’t a ten-yuan cup work just as well?”
Wang Jianfei deliberately slowed his steps.
Only after the two women entered the restroom did he turn into the Customer Service Department.
Chen Xiyao’s desk was indeed empty and perfectly clean.
Her coffee, cookies, small green plant, and all the other miscellaneous items—including wet wipes and adhesive bandages—had been given to Xiao Ye at the neighboring desk.
After listening to gossip the entire way, Wang Jianfei felt dizzy and confused.
He walked to the empty desk, knocked on it, and asked Xiao Ye, “Why is someone missing?”
“Chen Xiyao resigned and left.”
Wang Jianfei’s temples throbbed, and an indescribable panic rose inside him.
He tried to maintain a righteous expression and slapped the desk twice.
“How could she resign without warning? Did she complete the handover of her work? If everyone behaved like her, how would the company continue operating?
“How could all of you be so irresponsible?!”
Xiao Ye had been unfairly caught in the crossfire.
Besides, Wang Jianfei wasn’t the head of the Customer Service Department, so she wasn’t particularly afraid of him.
She curled her lips.
“Shouting at me won’t help. I’m not the one who resigned. She was willing to abandon her entire salary. What else could anyone do?”
Wang Jianfei knew he shouldn’t display his temper toward an employee from another department, but he still couldn’t keep the hostility from his voice.
“Why did she resign?!”
Xiao Ye also became irritated.
“Hasn’t the entire company already heard? She found herself a wealthy second-generation heir and is leaving to get married!”
A wealthy heir?
Marriage?!
So she had returned all that money because she wanted to discard him, the burden holding her back, and fly away with her new lover?!
No wonder she had suddenly proposed the ridiculous idea of pretending to be pregnant.
This was what she had been planning all along!
Fuck your mother! You dared play games with me, bitch!
Wang Jianfei’s fury instantly soared.
He forced himself not to lose his temper inside the company. He even forgot the excuse he had used to visit the Customer Service Department and left without asking about President Zhang’s after-sales cases.
Chen Xiyao, you fucking bitch!
You put on such a convincing performance of innocent devotion, yet you’ve been screwing around behind my back all along!
I will never let you off!
You want to marry a wealthy heir? Keep dreaming! Once he discovers that you had an affair with a married man, let’s see whether he still wants a bitch like you!
Wang Jianfei didn’t request leave or offer anyone an explanation.
He stormed into the elevator and headed downstairs while repeatedly calling her.
Her phone was off.
Still off.
It was still fucking off!
Bitch! Fucking bitch! Fuck every one of your ancestors! You dared make a fool of me!
Wang Jianfei furiously drove away, speeding straight toward Chen Xiyao’s apartment.
He abandoned his car beside the road without caring whether he received a ticket. He wished he could cross the entire distance to her apartment in one step and kick down her door.
The moment he entered the building, he saw Gu Shuofeng in the distance, standing outside the elevator with a shopping bag in her hand.
