- Chapter 7 - The Wife’s Revenge on the Scumbags (7)
In a good mood, Wang Jianfei listened to the car radio and faintly curled his lips at the host’s jokes. He turned the steering wheel, pulled over, and parked beside the road.
Looking into the rearview mirror, he adjusted his hair to conceal the swollen bump on his forehead. Then he turned his head from side to side, examining the red mark and several scratches the high heel had left on his cheek.
After so much time, the red mark was no longer particularly noticeable, but the scratches had become raised and swollen. Fortunately, they were concentrated on his left cheek, so he could hide them by covering the area with his hand.
Wang Jianfei spat out the word “shrew” before getting out of the car with one hand over his left cheek, just as he had when checking out of the hotel.
The pharmacy was beneath his company’s building, not far from Chen Xiyao’s apartment. His female colleagues often came here to buy dried chrysanthemums, rush pith, and similar herbs to steep in water. He occasionally accompanied them downstairs to purchase malva nuts or goji berries, so the pharmacy employees recognized his face.
The moment he entered, an employee warmly approached him. Glancing at the hand covering his cheek, she asked considerately, “What happened? Do you have a toothache? You’re still here this late—did you just finish work? Working overtime can easily cause internal heat. Why don’t I get you some anti-inflammatory medicine?”
Wang Jianfei went along with her assumption and nodded.
“Oh. Yes.”
The employee led him to the medicine shelves and recommended Three Yellow Tablets, metronidazole-fenbufen capsules, and amoxicillin.
Without even looking at them, Wang Jianfei nodded to everything.
“Get me a bottle of safflower oil too.”
“Safflower oil?” The employee kindly reminded him, “Applying safflower oil won’t help a toothache. If the pain is severe, use an ice pack. Once the swelling goes down, you should visit a dentist.”
Suppressing his impatience, Wang Jianfei explained, “It’s not for me. I’m picking it up for someone else.”
“Oh, I see.”
Embarrassed, the employee hurriedly retrieved the safflower oil.
“Will you need anything else?”
“No.”
She led him to the register, where the cashier scanned his purchases, placed the medicine in a plastic bag, and handed it over along with his change.
Wang Jianfei reached out to accept it, but his phone suddenly rang. Instinctively, he removed his left hand from his face and reached into his trouser pocket.
Before he could clearly see the number flashing on the screen, he heard a faint exclamation of surprise beside him.
Wang Jianfei instinctively looked toward the sound.
The employee was tilting her head and staring at his left cheek. When their eyes met, she hurriedly looked away.
Only then did Wang Jianfei remember the scratches on his face. His cheeks burned with humiliation. Covering them again would look suspicious, but leaving them exposed was equally embarrassing.
Gritting his teeth, he simply pretended nothing was wrong, turned around, and pushed open the door.
When he reached his car and opened the door, he couldn’t resist looking back.
Through the transparent glass entrance, he clearly saw the two women huddled together, pointing in his direction and occasionally covering their mouths to giggle.
Wang Jianfei’s anger instantly surged. He ducked into the car and slammed the door shut.
This was all that shrew Ma Yanzhi’s fault!
And Lan Lan too. Of all the people she could have befriended, why did she have to choose such an ill-mannered bitch?
He would make things clear when she returned. She had to end that friendship!
And this pharmacy—what the fuck were they laughing at?
He would never come here again!
Wang Jianfei drove straight toward Chen Xiyao’s apartment.
The radio continued playing comedy segments, but the more he listened, the more irritated he became. Remembering that several of his female colleagues were rather familiar with those two pharmacy employees, he suddenly smacked the steering wheel.
Then he comforted himself.
It was fine.
Regardless of how familiar they were, they only saw one another while buying medicine. Who bought medicine every day? Even specially prepared herbal-tea packets would take more than a day or two to finish.
They wouldn’t have an opportunity to gossip. In a few days, they would forget the incident entirely. It definitely wouldn’t spread through the company.
Thinking this, he gradually relaxed.
By then, he had reached Chen Xiyao’s residential complex.
Outside vehicles weren’t permitted to enter freely. It was almost eleven o’clock, and every roadside parking space was already occupied.
After circling the area several times without finding one, he had no choice but to drive to the nearest underground parking garage.
The distance from the garage to the residential complex was frustratingly awkward.
It was too close to justify taking a taxi, especially since he could almost arrive on foot in the time it took to wait for one. Yet walking would still require approximately twenty minutes. After reaching the complex’s entrance, he would have to walk another five or six minutes.
Altogether, the journey would take nearly half an hour.
Wang Jianfei waited three or four minutes. When no empty taxi appeared, he decided to walk.
He had only taken a few steps and lowered his head to light a cigarette when an empty taxi sped past him.
“Hey! Stop! Hey!”
The shadows beneath the trees were too dark. The driver didn’t see him and quickly disappeared into the distance.
“Fuck! My luck has been absolutely fucking rotten today!”
Wang Jianfei cursed under his breath.
Then he reminded himself that he would soon enter a woman’s tender embrace. Chen Xiyao possessed a bone-deep sensuality that the gentle and refined Xu Tinglan could never learn.
His spirits rose again.
With the cigarette hanging from his mouth, he strode into the heavy darkness.
Half an hour later, he finally reached the door of Chen Xiyao’s small apartment.
He released a relieved breath and pressed the doorbell.
Ding-dong.
Ding-dong.
He patiently waited, but no one opened the door.
He pressed the bell again.
Still no one answered.
“Yao Yao! Yao Yao!”
He rang the bell and knocked repeatedly, yet there was still no response.
Frowning, he transferred the bag of medicine from his left hand to his right and removed his phone from his pocket. Chen Xiyao’s number was at the top of his recent calls.
He dialed it and pressed his ear against the dark red security door.
【We’re sorry. The phone you have dialed is currently turned off.】
Turned off?!
Fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck, fuck!
The apartment was completely silent, without the slightest sound from inside.
Wang Jianfei stared at the number on his phone in disbelief. After confirming that he had dialed correctly, he unwillingly tried again.
The same recorded message informed him that the phone was turned off.
What the hell was Chen Xiyao doing?!
Bang! Bang! Bang!
Wang Jianfei kicked the door several times.
“Chen Xiyao! Open the door! Chen Xiyao!”
Clatter!
The security door behind him abruptly opened. An elderly man from the apartment opposite hers impatiently reprimanded him.
“What are you shouting for?! If no one is answering, then she obviously isn’t home! You could scream yourself hoarse, and no one would open that door! Leave immediately! You’re disturbing everyone!”
Wang Jianfei already had a stomach full of anger and instantly found a target for it. He violently threw the bag of medicine onto the floor.
“So what if I shout?! Who the hell are you to interfere, you old bastard?! Chen Xiyao! Open the fucking door!”
Facing the elderly man with his back toward Chen Xiyao’s apartment, Wang Jianfei kicked the door several more times.
The deafening banging echoed throughout the entire corridor.
Clatter!
The opposite door opened all the way.
A muscular man stood beside the elderly man, holding a rice bowl and staring coldly at Wang Jianfei. He wore a black tank top and beach shorts, and his bulging biceps flexed visibly.
Wang Jianfei spent every day sitting in an office. He looked strong on the outside but was weak underneath, without enough strength to withstand even one slap from this man.
He stared awkwardly at the muscular man, slowly lowering the foot he had been using to kick the door.
“I… I need to speak to her about something urgent.”
The man handed his bowl and chopsticks to the elderly man. Then he clenched first one fist and then the other.
The sharp cracking of his knuckles sounded particularly ominous in the empty corridor.
“What did you just call my father?”
“I…”
Wang Jianfei couldn’t bring himself to apologize, but he didn’t dare confront the man either.
His luck had been terrible today. If this man truly beat him, even receiving compensation afterward wouldn’t change the fact that Wang Jianfei would be the one who suffered.
Forget it.
The other man was nothing more than a muscle-bound idiot with a simple mind. He wasn’t worth the trouble.
Wang Jianfei glared at him, turned around, and hurried into the stairwell. He rushed down two floors before noticing that the muscular man hadn’t followed him.
Only then did he wipe the cold sweat from his forehead and head toward the elevator.
He returned home with a belly full of anger. Following his original plan, he drank beer and watched a soccer match while waiting for Xu Tinglan to return.
Yet the more he thought about everything, the angrier he became. He couldn’t shake the feeling that the little bitch Chen Xiyao had played him.
He called her countless times throughout the night. Her phone remained turned off every time.
Furious, he crushed two beer cans until they burst.
At around three or four in the morning, he finally couldn’t stay awake any longer. He slumped sideways on the sofa and fell asleep.
When he opened his eyes again, bright daylight flooded the room.
He picked up his phone, but no matter what he pressed, the screen remained black.
The battery was dead.
Squinting, he looked at the clock hanging on the wall.
Fuck!
It was almost noon!
Enduring his headache, he forced himself upright and looked around.
The women’s slippers in the entryway remained neatly in their original position. The bedroom door was wide open because he had opened it while changing clothes the previous night.
The room inside was empty.
Xu Tinglan hadn’t returned?!
That wasn’t right.
Whenever they argued in the past, Lan Lan could never focus on anything else until she reconciled with him.
What was different this time?
It had to be that little bitch Ma Yanzhi sowing discord between them again!
Wang Jianfei silently cursed all eighteen generations of Ma Yanzhi’s ancestors. Only then did he find his charger and plug in his phone.
Putting on an act, he called the Marketing Department and claimed that he was having lunch with a client and would be discussing business with that client throughout the afternoon, so he wouldn’t be coming to the office.
After giving several additional instructions, he ended the call and limped into the bathroom.
He looked at the scratches on his face, which were now covered by a thin layer of scabs.
The irritation from the previous night continued spreading and intensifying.
So annoying!
This was so fucking annoying!
His stomach felt terrible. He was painfully hungry, his waist and legs ached, his temples throbbed, and his head felt as though it were splitting apart.
Everything was so utterly fucking miserable!
He missed Xu Tinglan more than ever.
If his wife were here, she could cook for him and massage his waist.
After considering it, Wang Jianfei hesitantly picked up his phone.
For the first time after an argument, he would take the initiative to contact Xu Tinglan.
She would certainly be so moved that she would reconcile with him immediately.
Wang Jianfei was extremely confident.
