Returning to the Villain Omega's High School Days - Chapter 23
On the phone, Fang Lingyu walked into another room, knocked on the door, and said a few words to Su Wan.
Su Wan found it strange. After a while, she took the phone and said, “Hello?”
Xie Ning turned the volume to maximum and pressed it to her ear, drawing in a soft breath.
When Su Wan did not hear a response, she raised her voice slightly. “Hello?”
“I’m here,” Xie Ning said. “Is this Wanwan?”
“Yes.” Su Wan answered whatever she was asked and never said anything unnecessary.
Xie Ning took the phone and walked to the window, asking softly, “Have you eaten?”
“…” After a moment of speechlessness, Su Wan said, “Didn’t you have something to ask me?”
“Yes,” Xie Ning said, looking down at the scenery outside. “Isn’t this what I’m asking?”
Su Wan paused briefly, then said, “I ate.”
Thinking of Su Wan’s puffed-up, angry look on Friday night, Xie Ning felt a little amused and said, “What did you eat? I haven’t eaten yet. I’m worrying over what I should have…”
“Pizza,” Su Wan added. “Seafood flavor.”
“Was it good?”
“It was pretty good.” Su Wan could not think of anything else to add. Seeing Fang Lingyu walk away, she held the phone and lay down on the bed, hugging that big dog plush toy as she slowly said, “Xie Ning, are you sick?”
“No, I lied.” Xie Ning laughed lightly. “Don’t tell anyone. I actually just didn’t want to go to school.”
Hearing this, Su Wan frowned. “Why?”
“I didn’t want to go.”
Su Wan was silent for a while, then said in a serious tone, “Xie Ning, that’s not good.”
Xie Ning tilted her head and looked outside the window, dissatisfied. “Why are you calling me Xie Ning too? Didn’t I teach you to call me ‘Sister’?”
“I don’t like calling people brother or sister,” Su Wan said. “And besides, the name ‘Xie Ning’ sounds nice. If you changed your name to ‘Xie Dog,’ I wouldn’t call you by your name anymore.”
Xie Ning was amused. “Wanwan, so you’re actually this funny.”
Su Wan said, “What do you plan to do in the future? Not go to school, not take the college entrance exam, and just wait to marry someone and have children?”
Hearing Su Wan discuss this so seriously, Xie Ning could not help smiling. She said, “What’s bad about marrying someone and having children? Aren’t Omegas supposed to marry and have children?”
“If you think like that, I’ll look down on you.” Su Wan rolled over on the bed, choosing her words before slowly saying, “An Omega’s value shouldn’t be decided by their biological structure. Don’t be fooled by others into thinking that marriage and children are your destination.”
Xie Ning cooperated and said emotionally, “What you said makes a lot of sense.”
Su Wan swallowed. “Xie Ning, have other people said these things to you before? Are you tired of hearing them?”
“No,” Xie Ning said. “You’re the first person to say this to me.”
Su Wan seemed to let out a breath of relief. Reasoning with someone like Xie Ning came with pressure, after all. Xie Ning did not look stupid at all. She might understand everything, but that did not mean she would listen.
Su Wan paused, then said, “Then will you come to school tomorrow?”
Xie Ning asked in return, “Do you want me to go to school?”
“Yes.” Su Wan pressed her lips together. The thought of being able to see Xie Ning made all the blood in her body rush upward. She said, “You should study properly and prepare to get into a good school.”
Xie Ning said, “All right. Then I’ll go to school tomorrow.”
“Mm.”
Xie Ning said, “I’m hanging up.”
“Goodbye.” Su Wan hugged the big dog plush, burying her face in its fur as she said softly.
“Good night.”
Su Wan went to return the phone. Fang Lingyu sat on the sofa and asked her, “What did Xie Ning want to talk to you about?”
“Nothing much.” Su Wan thought about it. “She might not be in a good mood, so she casually chatted for a bit.”
“Why did she talk to you instead of your brother?” Fang Lingyu found it very strange. “I understand less and less what’s going on between Xie Ning and Xingheng now.”
Su Jin stood in the second-floor hallway. Hearing their conversation, she immediately cut in and said, “What’s going on? They must have fallen apart, of course!”
Fang Lingyu said sternly, “Don’t talk nonsense.”
Su Jin sneered. “Mom, you should know this. Brother’s marriage wasn’t decided by him at all. Dad arranged it for him. Brother himself doesn’t have a choice either. He’s obviously still so young, and so many girls like him. He could slowly choose!”
Fang Lingyu shook her head. “Xiao Jin, you simply don’t understand.”
“I indeed don’t understand. Our family isn’t bad off either, so why do we have to curry favor with the Xie family? Why do we have to press our warm face against someone else’s cold backside? Do you know what they said here that day? Right here.” Su Jin pointed at the corner of the stairs and said excitedly, “I saw it with my own eyes. I heard Xie Ning tell her younger brother that we were reaching above our station!”
Fang Lingyu said calmly, “You’ve already said this many times. Go back to your room. Go call your brother over. I’ll ask him about the specific situation.”
Su Jin was indignant. She stepped barefoot on the stairs, each step heavy and forceful.
Su Wan was also about to return to her room, but Fang Lingyu called out to her. “Wanwan, don’t go.”
Su Xingheng wore pajamas and headphones as he quickly came downstairs. He sat on the sofa across from Su Wan, both hands resting on the backrest, looking somewhat unwilling.
Fang Lingyu placed both hands on her knees. Even at home, she sat with a dignified posture. She pressed her lips together and pondered for a long time before saying, “Xingheng, when you see Xie Ning at school tomorrow, bring her something.”
Su Xingheng gave an “ah.” “Does Xie Ning lack anything? Does she need us to bring her something?”
Fang Lingyu said, “She has a cold. I’ll have Nanny Zhang simmer some chicken soup in a while and put it in a thermos. Tomorrow at noon, ask her to eat with you and give her the chicken soup to drink.”
Su Xingheng looked baffled. “Last time I went to find her, she didn’t give me a good expression at all.”
Fang Lingyu placed her hand on Su Xingheng’s shoulder and patiently guided him. “A man needs to have some patience. Failure isn’t frightening. You have to try a few more times. Xie Ning is testing your patience.”
Su Xingheng was doubtful. In the past few days, he had tried sending Xie Ning messages, but the messages he sent were like stones sinking into the sea, not even leaving a shadow behind.
Growing up, he had never been treated like this by a girl before. This was clearly her whetting his appetite, and it made him lose some patience.
After Fang Lingyu said this, he became very unconvinced. The competitive desire of a man was stirred up in him, and he stood up, saying, “Xie Ning just wants to play some new tricks to mess with people. Mom, don’t be fooled by her either. I’ll treat it more seriously these two days. Don’t worry blindly. Nothing will happen.”
Fang Lingyu nodded, then reached out with her other hand to hold Su Wan’s hand and said warmly, “Wanwan, you’ve been close to Xie Ning recently. See if you can help speak a few words. Tomorrow at noon, you go too. Go ask Xie Ning to eat and say more good things about your brother.”
Su Wan said, “I know.”
Su Xingheng’s expression became a little strange. He did not like Su Wan, but he rarely showed it.
Fang Lingyu lowered her voice and gave another instruction. “Don’t bring Xiao Jin tomorrow. I’m afraid if she’s there, she’ll make trouble again.”
“How can I not bring her?” Su Xingheng said gloomily. “If I don’t bring her, she’ll definitely get angry.”
“Think of a way. Trick her away.” Fang Lingyu paused, then glanced toward the top of the stairs to make sure Su Jin was not there before saying quietly, “During this period, we’ll arrange a marriage prospect for her. Once that happens, she should calm down a little.”
Su Xingheng was unhappy with the family’s arrangement, but Fang Lingyu held his arm and repeatedly reminded him, “Don’t tell her for now. With her personality, I’m afraid she won’t be able to accept it.”
“You know she won’t be able to accept it, but you still insist on arranging a marriage for her.” Su Xingheng pushed Fang Lingyu’s hand away and said unhappily, “How is this any different from sending her away?”
“We’re only arranging a marriage first. She still has a year and a half before graduation. If she doesn’t want to marry then, there’s nothing we can do to her,” Fang Lingyu said.
Su Xingheng thought about it and felt that this did make sense. Although he felt unhappy, he had nothing more to say.
He went upstairs to find Su Jin. The moment the door opened, Su Jin threw herself into his arms and clung to him tightly, refusing to let go.
Su Xingheng touched her head, went into the room, and comforted her for a while.
Xie Ning only arrived at school at ten o’clock. As soon as she entered the classroom, everyone looked at her curiously.
“Xie Ning, did you differentiate?” a boy asked what was on everyone’s mind. “You didn’t come to school yesterday. Was it because you differentiated?”
Several people gathered around and sniffed her. “That’s not right, Xie Ning. There’s no pheromone scent on you!”
A few sensitive Omegas also leaned over to smell her. “I don’t smell Omega pheromones. Xie Ning, what brand of scent remover did you use? Why does it work so well?”
Xie Ning pushed that male Omega away, sat down at her seat, and lazily said, “I haven’t differentiated yet. Don’t spread rumors.”
“Tch. If you didn’t differentiate, why did you take leave?”
“Aiya, you’re making us so disappointed. We were all looking forward to what you’d be like after differentiating!”
There were three Alphas in the class who had already differentiated, all of them boys. Seeing Xie Ning, this fragrant little “Omega,” made them drool with longing. Those who had not differentiated were also especially expectant. If they could smell her pheromones, these people would be so excited they might die.
Xie Ning really wanted to know what kind of reaction these people would have once she differentiated into a top-tier Alpha.
At that point, they would probably not dare approach her at all. After all, pheromone suppression existed between Alphas. Some low-level Alphas, after smelling the pheromones of a top-tier Alpha, might completely shut down and be unable to release pheromones or go into heat for a long time.
Amid the lively atmosphere, top student Chen Shi Er turned back to look at her and suddenly reminded her, “Xie Ning, there’s an exam later. Did you know?”
Xie Ning: “Uh.”
“Would Xie Ning be afraid of exams?” a boy said proudly. “She never reviews. When has her ranking ever dropped out of the top ten?”
“The top student is just jealous that she’s a genius, jealous that she doesn’t need to review and still studies well, hahaha.”
Xie Ning: “…Why are you all even more confident than I am?”
“Isn’t this because we believe in your ability?” Fatty Zhou Tian said. “When have you ever not slapped our faces with your strength?”
This time, maybe not.
Xie Ning opened the book and glanced at it, then asked Fatty, “Where did the lessons get up to?”
Zhou Tian: “…”
“Holy crap, Xie Ning, you haven’t taken any notes this whole half month? This book is cleaner than my face.” Zhou Tian flipped open Xie Ning’s book and cried out in surprise. “I thought geniuses like you just pretended not to study during the day, then went back at night to do homework! You didn’t study at night either?!”
Xie Ning confessed honestly, “That’s right.”
The whole group was speechless. Xie Ning searched through her schoolbag again and again. Aside from one high school math book, she could not find a second book, so she could only ask, “What are we testing later?”
“Science comprehensive!”
“Which subjects are included in science comprehensive again…”
“…”
“You really can act, Xie Ning. You’re pretending to be dumb now, then tomorrow you’ll use your score to slap our faces again, right?”
Xie Ning said, “Really not…”
Before Xie Ning could explain, the class bell rang. Everyone scattered and returned to their seats.
Old Wang entered with a stack of test papers, his face stern as he said, “Put away all your books. Prepare for the exam.”
Xie Ning received the test paper and stared at it for a long time, not knowing where to start. In the end, she picked a few multiple-choice questions she could understand. After eliminating the obviously wrong options, she confidently wrote a “D.”
Old Wang silently walked beside her and tapped his finger on the question stem. There, in bold black text, were the words: “Multiple-choice question; more than two correct options.”
Xie Ning: “…”
After twenty years of not looking at high school textbooks, there were some questions whose wording she could no longer understand. For example, one question asked about ion hydrolysis. Xie Ning had studied economics in university. How could she still remember so many element symbols?
Seeing her stare blankly at the question, Old Wang anxiously gestured with his hands and feet. Xie Ning simply got up and called Old Wang to the office, then asked him, “Does our school have any requirements for repeating a grade?”
Old Wang touched his forehead and looked at her in disbelief, not daring to ask the doubt in his heart.
After careful thought, Xie Ning said, “Do you remember what I told you before?”
Old Wang: “?”
Xie Ning said, “I said I was reborn.”
Old Wang blinked. “Wasn’t that fake?”
“In truth, I lost my memory. I forgot all the knowledge I learned,” Xie Ning said. “I want to repeat a grade and not take the college entrance exam next year.”
Old Wang: “…” Can memory loss even be that selective?
Old Wang also did not know who exactly had gone mad. After listening to Xie Ning’s speech, he clearly realized that the job in his hands was about to be lost. So he immediately called his mother-in-law and asked if she could lend him money to start a business.
Xie Ning felt her plan was completely feasible.
Yesterday, Jiang Qin’s words had awakened her, making her realize that even now, she was still standing in the same place—
There had been no substantial change. She had only slightly closed the distance between herself and Wanwan.
She decided to do something even crazier.
Since she had returned to the past, then she would completely change the past. Since Wanwan had not grown up yet, then she would accompany her as she grew.
The kind where they went to school together, ate together, and slept together.
If the Su family tried to stop her, then she would make the Su family collapse and scatter. If Old Man Xie tried to stop her, then she would let him experience having no one to rely on in old age earlier. In her eyes, these people were all scum anyway.
