The Iceberg Ex-Wife Doesn't Want to Take My Tragic Ending Script (BE Script) - Chapter 4
The sun shone on Shi Xiu’s face, making her feel bright with a touch of coldness.
She raised her chin and said that sentence to Shang Jinyue. She didn’t know if this counted as being clear-headed, only that she had never been so decisive toward Shang Jinyue in this life.
The soft fabric slid past Shang Jinyue’s fingers, inch by inch, cutting deeper than a knife.
Shi Xiu wasn’t sure if it was her imagination, but she thought she saw astonishment on Shang Jinyue’s face. The hand that had just held her jacket was still suspended in the air, not retreating for a long time.
This was reasonable. After all, someone who had been the center of attention since childhood probably had never been rejected before.
This dream is quite logical. Well done, me.
Shi Xiu was smug and proud, ready to find Feng Xinyang to brag. However, she stood in the aisle, scanned the classroom, and couldn’t find Feng Xinyang anywhere.
Shi Xiu’s behavior finally annoyed the onlookers. After she obstructed traffic for the third time, the head teacher, Guo Xiao, couldn’t take it anymore: “Shi Xiu, what are you doing standing in the aisle?”
“I’m looking for Xinyang, Teacher,” Shi Xiu replied.
Guo Xiao was full of questions: “Feng Xinyang? Didn’t she go for intensive training? Didn’t you bring her letter of commitment this morning?”
Faced with the barrage of questions, Shi Xiu stared blankly at Guo Xiao for a few seconds, then slowly realized: Fine arts students’ specialized exams were during the senior year winter vacation, so their intensive training started at the beginning of the senior fall semester.
Therefore, Feng Xinyang shouldn’t be in the classroom at this time. If she had been firm on this path, she wouldn’t be here either.
Guo Xiao watched Shi Xiu’s expression flicker between frowning, relaxing, and frowning again, and couldn’t help but furrow his own brow: “Shi Xiu, what are you thinking about?”
“I…” Shi Xiu stammered, unsure how to handle the situation. But then her brain raced, and she had a flash of inspiration: “I was wondering where Xinyang’s desk is. I want to sit next to her. She’ll need to catch up on cultural classes when she returns, and I can help her.”
“Shi Xiu, if I recall correctly, you came to my office yesterday, asking me to arrange for you to sit with Shang Jinyue, and you guaranteed me you would rank in the top twenty of the entire grade on the first mock exam, right?” Guo Xiao walked up to Shi Xiu, actively helping her recall.
A memory so distant it was almost forgotten rushed at Shi Xiu. Before pestering Shang Jinyue, she first pestered the head teacher to let her sit with Shang Jinyue. Therefore, rather than saying Shang Jinyue had no choice but to agree, it was more accurate to say she had no choice at all.
So, what was her strong rejection just now? Was it a sign of her poor memory?
Guo Xiao didn’t know why he suddenly saw a trace of world-weariness on Shi Xiu’s face: “Shi Xiu, what’s with that reaction? Do you think you can’t rank in the top twenty of the grade?”
“How could I!” Shi Xiu replied reflexively. Her seventeen-year-old self was even more arrogant than her twenty-seven-year-old self.
Guo Xiao saw the child was still proud and unruly and decided he was overthinking: “Then why are you still standing there? Get back to your seat!”
Guo Xiao chastised Shi Xiu, telling her not to obstruct traffic. Shi Xiu watched the head teacher’s retreating back, having lost all ability to argue, and stood in place, defeated. What good did it do to feel a moment of satisfaction? She still had to be Shang Jinyue’s deskmate.
“Are you coming in?”
In the noisy classroom, Shang Jinyue’s voice was an exception. Her clear, cool voice was wrapped in a strange gentleness, entering Shi Xiu’s ears without warning, connecting to last night.
In the dim light, Shang Jinyue’s nightgown was half-folded, her smooth, long legs resting on the bedside. Her slender fingers cupped Shi Xiu’s neck, leading her downward. The same question, moist with dew, was whispered by her ear.
Shi Xiu’s heart pounded violently, as it had been years since Shang Jinyue took the initiative. Her throat felt dry.
The cold wind of autumn blew through the front and back doors of the classroom, making the books on the desks rustle.
“You dropped it.”
Unlike the previous sound, Shang Jinyue’s voice was much colder now. She handed Shi Xiu the test paper that the wind had nearly blown away, being very sparing with her words under her unfamiliar gaze.
Seventeen-year-old Shang Jinyue had the cleanest eyes in the world, like a deer that had mistakenly wandered into human society. Any fantasy about her felt like sacrilege.
Damn it.
Realizing the image she had just reflexively conjured, Shi Xiu’s face flushed crimson. She frantically grabbed the test paper that had fallen to the floor and shuffled sideways, like a crab, into the seat she had just rejected: “Thank you.”
Having to tearfully accept what she had just rejected, Shi Xiu’s brief moment of satisfaction vanished instantly.
My face hurts. These problems are too hard.
After the seating rearrangement, Guo Xiao handed out a math test. Shi Xiu looked at the overwhelming math problems, her head swimming, and rubbed her red ears.
Was I that good in the past? Just casually tackling trigonometry?
Hiss, how do I solve this quadratic equation again? Can I just give it a dollar and let it solve itself…
Shi Xiu skipped over problems like playing hopscotch, almost chewing her pen to pieces. It’s just a dream, why is it so logically rigorous? Wake up now! I don’t want this dream anymore!
Shi Xiu’s gaze froze, and a faint, ominous premonition arose. Didn’t people wake up when they realized they were dreaming? Why wasn’t she waking up?
…No way.
Shi Xiu remembered that right before this, she had just gotten into the elevator to leave home. Could an elevator accident be fatal? Didn’t the elevator in her community have an emergency braking function?
The unsolvable quadratic equation seemed to smile mockingly at Shi Xiu.
The sound of paper flipping indicated that Shang Jinyue had just finished one side of the test. Shi Xiu glanced at Shang Jinyue out of the corner of her eye, watching her work with effortless composure, then quickly withdrew her gaze.
Even angrier.
Logic told Shi Xiu that this wouldn’t do; she urgently needed to go out, wash her face, and calm down. So, Shi Xiu requested permission to leave and shuffled sideways, like a crab again, out of her seat with Shang Jinyue.
The autumn temperature felt comfortable to someone accustomed to winter. The wind blew through the corridor, dispersing the stuffy air in the classroom. Since she didn’t wear makeup, she didn’t have to worry about smudging. Shi Xiu just splashed some water on her face in the restroom and came out.
She was never a model student. She wasn’t in a hurry to return to class, leaning against the corridor railing, gazing at the long-unseen campus. The school was empty during class time. The sound of reading drifted over, making everything feel free and full of hope.
“Student life is so much better.”
“It would be even better if I didn’t have to solve quadratic equations.”
Shi Xiu rested her chin in her hand, muttering her troubles softly. With her current brain, the top twenty in the grade was impossible; she might only manage to compete for the bottom twenty.
What a terrible dream! I don’t want it anymore! She had to wake up from this dream.
Shi Xiu remembered that besides realizing she was dreaming, intense stimuli were the fastest way to wake up. Thinking of this, Shi Xiu looked at the staircase not far away. The narrow, long staircase looked like a winding, coiled serpent, obscurely flicking its tongue at her.
Shi Xiu had fallen down the stairs when she was little. At the time, she felt like her entire rear end didn’t belong to her anymore. The feeling was both painful and numb. Even after more than ten years, Shi Xiu still shivered at the memory.
Jumping down the stairs would definitely wake her up. Wake up and embrace the beautiful life after divorce. It’s now or never!
Shi Xiu clenched her fists, took a deep breath, closed her eyes, and let herself walk toward the stairs.
The feeling of weightlessness came faster than Shi Xiu anticipated. She lost control of her body. The images in her vision tumbled into double vision. The pressure in her stomach made her feel like she was back in the out-of-control elevator, and the pain was exceptionally clear.
Holy hell, I just want to wake up from a dream, why does it have to hurt this much?
But even so, Shi Xiu bit her lip stubbornly, refusing to cry out. The cold floor pressed against her back, eagerly sharing her body heat. She hurt all over and didn’t have the strength to move to a better spot.
Besides, she was about to leave this dream; why bother moving?
A broken light fixture shone directly into Shi Xiu’s eyes, flashing in sync with her hazy pupils. She felt the wait was exceptionally long, like a flower blooming in muddy water, resignedly aware of its future fate, lying defeated on the ground.
Until someone stepped into her patch of mud.
Shi Xiu felt a familiar coldness suddenly cover her wrist. An anxious voice called out: “Shi Xiu.”
“Shang Jinyue?”
Shi Xiu immediately recognized the owner of the voice by reflex. But why would Shang Jinyue sound anxious? This dream of hers is truly interesting, even arranging for Shang Jinyue to look like this at the very end.
Shi Xiu struggled to open her eyes and saw Shang Jinyue’s deeply furrowed brow. The person was looking her body up and down, seemingly very worried, but her cold, emotionless eyes made it hard to see any sympathy.
Right, this is Shang Jinyue.
She figured Shang Jinyue must have been waiting for the elevator downstairs when the accident happened. She was back in reality.
“That’s great.”
Shi Xiu murmured quietly, closing her eyes in relief.
Outside the window, two sparrows fluttered their wings, chirping and hopping, discussing something unknown. They disturbed the twilight, interrupting the peaceful sleep of the person on the bed.
“…”
Why are there sparrows?
Shi Xiu felt uncomfortable with her surroundings and woke up with a frown. The sunlight was gentle, baking the smell of cheap disinfectant in the air. Shi Xiu looked at the hospital room, partitioned by white curtains. The simple, almost shabby hospital environment made her feel lost.
Did Shang Jinyue go bankrupt?
Oh, right. I left with nothing.
Merchants are the most heartless people.
With a “hiss” sound, Shi Xiu cracked a smile. Perhaps she genuinely found it amusing. But why, just a second before smiling, did Shi Xiu feel a sudden, involuntary drop, and a pang in her chest?
It’s just being broke, what’s there to be sad about? Who is Shang Jinyue? She had already forgotten that person.
“Beep—!”
A sharp whistle sounded from somewhere, cutting through Shi Xiu’s unresolved resentment, as if mocking her superficial nonchalance.
Shi Xiu was immediately annoyed. Just as she was about to find the source of the noise, more sounds entered her ears. Someone was shouting “Pass it, pass it!” Someone else yelled “Spike it!” as a ball was hit with forceful, resounding thuds…
Shi Xiu had the illusion of being dragged into a physical education class. But after lying in bed and listening distractedly for a while, she finally realized that there really was a P.E. class going on outside.
Seriously, what kind of good hospital is built next to a school! Don’t patients need rest?
“Be careful not to get it wet when you go back. You’ll be fine soon.”
“Thank you, Teacher.”
“You’re welcome, go back now.”
…
Te… Teacher.
Shi Xiu caught the key word in the dialogue and completely lost her composure. There was a hospital built next to a school. —The school clinic.
Shi Xiu looked at the increasingly familiar surroundings, and her eyes filled with despair.
No way, I rolled down the stairs, and the dream still hasn’t ended?
Did that bizarre elevator accident truly send her back to age seventeen?
Shi Xiu didn’t want to believe this fact and desperately clung to an unrealistic lifeline. —If this is a dream, the world will change according to the owner’s will.
“The leaves outside the window turn into marshmallows, and the dirt is made of chocolate!”
“It immediately starts raining RMB (Chinese currency)!”
“A super-duper beautiful person appears before me!”
Shi Xiu used her utmost imagination, making a series of abnormal, fantastical alterations to the world she was in.
But the leaves outside the window were still green, and the soil hadn’t turned into chocolate. A warm, long breeze blew in through the window. There was no RMB, only the smell of disinfectant.
“Swish!”
Suddenly, a well-defined hand reached past the curtain at the head of Shi Xiu’s bed and pulled it back.
Seventeen-year-old Shang Jinyue, dressed in her school uniform, appeared before Shi Xiu again: “You’re awake?”
Author’s Note:
Xiu: I’m dead.
