What Should I Do If I Wake Up and It’s the Apocalypse? (GL) - Chapter 2
When Mu Xiao woke up again, she only felt that her head was heavy and muddled.
With her eyes closed, she sat up in a daze, supporting herself with both hands. For a long while, she had no thought of doing anything, let alone making any movements.
In her confusion, a miserable scream came from somewhere, jolting Mu Xiao so badly that even her pores seemed to fill with terror. Her back was damp and cold.
Fortunately, after breaking out in that cold sweat, Mu Xiao became completely awake. With just one glance, she knew that her transmigration had not been a dream—and that, tragically, she had failed to die.
Her heart pounded wildly with loud thumps. Mu Xiao pressed hard against her chest. Only then did she feel that unbearably suffocating sensation gradually ease as her heartbeat slowed.
So it turned out that being frightened to death really was possible. Even one’s heart jumping into one’s throat might actually happen.
Mu Xiao took a deep breath. When she stood up again, her legs were steady. Suspiciously, she walked to the doorway.
The door was still wide open. If not for the claw mark on it, Mu Xiao might even have been unable to stop herself from thinking that perhaps things were not that bad.
But with the door wide open like this, why had no zombies come in and eaten her?
Mu Xiao looked around, casually grabbed the broom placed by the door, and cautiously poked her head out.
The corridor was empty. There was nothing there.
Holding the broom, Mu Xiao lightened her steps and walked out. She did not forget to look up at the room number on the door so that she would not be unable to find her way back later.
An unnatural silence filled the building.
Mu Xiao turned a corner and finally found the elevator area. The lights of both elevators were still on. One had stopped at the basement level, and the other at the eleventh floor—Mu Xiao was on the seventh floor.
She reached out to press the elevator button, choosing the one on the eleventh floor. With a faint rumbling sound, the display showed that the elevator was descending.
Without the slightest hesitation, Mu Xiao grabbed the broom and turned around, running to the corner. After confirming that there were no zombies ahead, behind, left, or right, she clung to the wall and held her breath, waiting.
Ding—
The sound indicating the elevator’s arrival rang out. The elevator doors opened, and not long after, they automatically closed again.
Other than those sounds, there was nothing.
Could the elevator be safe?
Mu Xiao could not help feeling a little pleased. The seventh floor was neither too high nor too low. If she went down the stairs, she might run into plenty of trouble. But if she could lure away any zombies that might be on the first floor, then take the elevator down…
She had already eaten all the sleeping pills. She could not exactly stay awake and wait for zombies to come tear her apart. That would hurt too much!
Mu Xiao clung to the wall and planned to take another look toward the elevator. If there was no problem, she would go back and pack her things.
Mm. The space in front of the elevator was still empty. No problem!
No problem, my ass!
A head had also poked out from behind the wall. Its ashen face was utterly bloodless, and its dull yellow eyes bulged outward as it let out a roar at Mu Xiao.
That was a truly bloody maw. There were even scraps of bloody foam inside, spraying all over Mu Xiao.
“Ah—!”
Mu Xiao screamed in fright. Instinctively, she raised the broom in her hand and jabbed it straight at the zombie right in front of her.
The zombie did not know how to dodge. This jab actually stabbed straight into its mouth. Seeing the delicious living person in front of it turn and run, it wanted to chase after her, only to discover that the long stick in its mouth was braced against the wall ahead, preventing it from getting through for the moment.
The combined shrieking of the zombie and Mu Xiao was like a drop of water falling into a pan of hot oil. In an instant, the entire building boiled over.
Especially the zombies wandering on this floor—they followed the sound and staggered toward it.
Before Mu Xiao could run back to her apartment, she saw a zombie coming from that side, blocking her way.
Behind her, around the corner, the zombie whose mouth she had stabbed began slamming forward violently, forcing itself after her with the broom still in its mouth.
A door!
That was Mu Xiao’s only choice left. As she ran, she hurriedly knocked on the doors beside her. In truth, there were only three doors, and none of them showed any movement.
Seeing the zombies on both sides getting closer and closer, Mu Xiao chose the nearest door and rammed it hard with her shoulder. The resistance was unexpectedly small, and she fell forward onto the floor.
“Wu—”
A tender little voice sounded from beside her. Mu Xiao quickly looked over and saw a little girl covering her forehead.
Before she could say anything, the shadow of a zombie could already be seen outside the door. Just as it roared and was about to pounce, the broom in the other zombie’s mouth rushed forward and knocked into it, making it stagger back a step.
Mu Xiao had no time to care about anything else. She hurriedly jumped up, slammed the door shut, locked it, and even flipped over the table beside the door to brace against it. The whole series of movements was completed in one breath.
Only after finishing all that did she slide down to sit on the floor with her back against the table, letting out a long breath. Then she looked at the little girl in front of her.
The little girl seemed stunned by Mu Xiao’s movements. She had not even remembered to lower the hand covering her forehead, and her eyes were wide and round.
“Shh—”
Mu Xiao raised a finger to her lips, making a gesture for silence, and even blinked at her.
For some reason, the little girl covered her own mouth with her other hand and nodded repeatedly at Mu Xiao.
The sounds of zombies could still be faintly heard outside the door. Aside from roaring, there were also a few thuds as they crashed into the door and wall.
Fortunately, the door lock was quite sturdy. After a series of thumping sounds that made one’s heart leap up and down, the movements in the corridor gradually quieted.
After waiting a while longer, Mu Xiao finally felt as if she could put her heart back into her stomach for now. Her legs also regained feeling. She stood up and walked over to the little girl.
“You opened the door just now, right? Thank you.” She revealed a big smile and raised her hand to take down the little girl’s hand covering her forehead.
Her forehead had been bumped red. It would probably hurt for a couple of days, but fortunately, the skin had not broken and there was no blood.
“I’m really sorry. The situation just now was urgent—”
Mu Xiao paused and glanced around. The layout of this room was very similar to the one she had transmigrated into. It was a single apartment with fairly decent renovations.
“Are you home alone?”
The little girl first looked at her, seemingly not afraid of this Sister. Then she nodded obediently and said, “Mommy went to work.”
She did not mention her father, and Mu Xiao did not ask.
“Then… where are the medicines in your home? I’ll see if there’s anything I can apply for you.” As Mu Xiao gently rubbed the girl’s forehead, she asked.
As for this girl’s mother, who knew what had happened to her outside.
“They’re in the drawer by the bed. I’ll go get them!” The little girl pointed toward the bedroom, then trotted over as she spoke.
Seeing that she did not seem dizzy, Mu Xiao felt a little less guilty and followed the girl inside.
“Mommy said that if I bump into something, I should put this on.” The little girl quickly found a small spray bottle from the drawer. Mu Xiao glanced over and saw that the drawer was full of common medicines, all arranged very neatly.
Mu Xiao took the bottle from the little girl and told her to close her eyes. She sprayed some Yunnan Baiyao on the reddened area, then could not help asking again, “You were home alone. Just now, did you open the door because you heard me knocking?”
The little girl opened her eyes. Her dark, bright eyes looked at Mu Xiao, and then she revealed a smile.
“I recognize Sister. We live on the same floor.”
As she spoke, she revealed a trace of fear and glanced toward the window.
“I know there are scary monsters outside biting people. Just now, I saw that the one knocking was Sister. Sister was scared.”
There was a small stool placed by the door. It seemed that when the little girl heard the knocking, she had first looked outside through the peephole.
Mu Xiao could not help feeling grateful for her good luck. But when she looked at this little girl again, she became conflicted.
“Outside… there are terrifying monsters everywhere. They’re called zombies.” She made a clawing gesture with her hands. Seeing the little girl reveal a tiny bit of fear, she nodded and carefully considered her words.
“If your mommy is all right, she will definitely think of a way to come back and find you—”
At this point, Mu Xiao stopped herself. What if the little girl’s mother had already met with an accident? Waiting in the apartment forever was not a good solution either.
“I remember Mommy’s phone number!” the little girl said in a crisp voice.
Seeing the worry on Mu Xiao’s face, she could not help grabbing the corner of Mu Xiao’s clothes and lifting her head.
“Sister, we can call Mommy!”
Right. Before she took the pills, her phone had still had signal!
Mu Xiao’s eyes lit up. She touched her pocket, then drooped again. When she had gone out to scout the way just now, she had not brought her phone.
“Sister?” The little girl was a little worried and could not help calling out.
Looking at the pitiful girl, Mu Xiao thought for a moment, then clenched her fists.
“Don’t worry. I’ll go back and get my phone. You wait here for me!”
