What Should I Do If I Wake Up and It’s the Apocalypse? (GL) - Chapter 9
“How is there a person here?!” Fatty immediately shouted.
No one knew whether the girl was dead or alive. For her to appear inexplicably in his cargo compartment—if something happened, wouldn’t he be the unlucky one?
Only after shouting did he suddenly remember what kind of world this had become. The police definitely had no time to care about where someone had died. Only then did his expression improve a little.
By this time, Mu Xiao had already jumped into the cargo compartment to check the situation.
That person was only unconscious. After Mu Xiao called out to her twice, she woke up.
She opened her eyes and looked at Mu Xiao, then immediately sat up and looked toward the cargo door.
Fatty, who was standing outside the cargo compartment, froze. Mu Xiao reacted a little faster.
“Don’t worry. The zombie outside has been killed,” Mu Xiao soothed her briefly. “My name is Mu Xiao. This truck is his.”
“Ling Qi.” The pale-faced girl glanced at Mu Xiao. Her thin lips were almost as bloodless as her face. “I was being chased by zombies. I saw the cargo compartment was open, so I hid inside.”
Her voice was very flat. It sounded somewhat numb, and it was not loud.
Only after Mu Xiao finished listening did she realize that the first two syllables were probably her name.
“Ling Qi?” she asked again, just in case.
“Yes.” Ling Qi looked at Mu Xiao. Only then did Mu Xiao notice that Ling Qi’s eyes were not black, but somewhat gray-green.
“Hey, didn’t we agree you’d help me move goods?” Fatty saw that the two seemed about to keep chatting and interrupted them. “Don’t say I didn’t remind you. If you wait any longer, it’ll be harder to go to the hospital and find someone!”
Mu Xiao knew Fatty was right, so she could only scratch her head apologetically at Ling Qi.
“Let’s get out of the truck first. You can go inside and rest for a while and eat something. It’s safe inside.”
As she spoke, Mu Xiao jumped out of the cargo compartment and even reached out toward Ling Qi to help her.
After all, Ling Qi looked very weak, and since she had been unconscious just now, the only things Mu Xiao could think of were rest, food, and drink.
“That’s my stuff, your Fat Grandpa’s stuff.” If Fatty had a beard, he would probably be blowing it and glaring right now.
Mu Xiao waved her hand without minding. “You’re leaving anyway. It’s fine if she eats some of the things that are inconvenient to take with you. In any case, this place will probably be emptied out in a couple of days.”
When food and water became scarce, wouldn’t people search roadside shops for supplies? Mu Xiao had read about it. She understood.
It was clearly crooked logic, but it was also the truth. Fatty was choked speechless.
Fortunately, Mu Xiao moved quickly. She brought Ling Qi inside to stay with An Qi, then efficiently helped Fatty move goods. Seeing this, Fatty no longer said anything.
The cargo compartment of the small truck was neither big nor small, and Fatty chose things carefully. Items with a long shelf life that could fill the stomach were prioritized. From the start, he stuffed bags of rice into the cargo compartment and even took several sturdy pots. Next was water. Fatty almost brought all the mineral water in the shop, and also moved in some milk and alcohol. After that came all the candy, chocolate, and biscuits in the store. Although he liked eating potato chips, Fatty did not dare put in too many, since those things took up too much space.
Lastly, he also brought all the cigarettes, along with his own clothes and bedding. There was not much empty space left in the cargo compartment.
Seeing that everything had been loaded, Mu Xiao went back into the shop to call An Qi, preparing to head to the hospital.
Before An Qi could say okay, Ling Qi stood up instead and looked straight at Mu Xiao.
“Can you take me with you?”
Mu Xiao froze. Ling Qi’s voice was highly distinctive. It sounded clear and translucent, like jade striking together, yet her way of speaking was so direct and simple.
Still, Mu Xiao was only distracted for a brief moment.
“But we’re going to the hospital next to find An Qi’s mom. It’s very likely we’ll encounter danger there.”
At the mention of danger, Ling Qi did not even move her brows.
“I have hands and feet. Maybe I can help.” After saying this, Ling Qi seemed to realize that her words sounded a little off. She raised a hand to cover her mouth and coughed lightly, then looked away and added, “You… are about the same age as me too.”
Those words gave Ling Qi a bit more liveliness, and the pressure her previous direct gaze had brought also faded.
Mu Xiao looked at An Qi, then at Ling Qi. In the end, she still nodded.
“Then… all right. You can come with us.”
As she spoke, she glanced at the clothes-drying pole in her hand. The deformation in the middle made her uneasy. She had wanted to see if Fatty’s shop had anything suitable, but the clothes-drying poles in this small supermarket were all plastic.
She looked around worriedly, then spotted something good. The shop also sold some exercise equipment ordinary people could use, such as jump ropes and—
badminton rackets.
Mu Xiao weighed a badminton racket in her hand, then stuffed one each to An Qi and Ling Qi.
“This thing is long, and it’s convenient to hit with.”
After handing them out, she took a pair for herself and swung them twice, but she was not very satisfied. Badminton rackets were still too light.
It was at this moment that Fatty walked in.
“What are you little girls dawdling around for?” He originally had not wanted to move, but since he had changed his mind, he now wanted to leave as soon as possible.
When he came back and saw Mu Xiao swinging a racket, he froze for a moment. Then he irritably burrowed into the corner over there and rummaged around for a long time before pulling something out and tossing it to Mu Xiao.
“I see you’ve got quite a bit of strength. Use this.”
It was actually a pair of tennis rackets.
Clearly, because tennis was not very popular in this small city, the rackets had gathered dust and been abandoned in the corner.
But this pair of rackets suited Mu Xiao perfectly. She nodded in satisfaction.
“Thanks.”
Fatty had also brought along his family’s watermelon knife, boldly tucking it at his waist.
“Hehe, back then I always envied those people on TV who could carry a watermelon knife onto the street like this. So domineering!” He slapped his big belly and tossed Mu Xiao a small box of lighters. “Take it. Your payment for moving goods. Hurry up and let’s go.”
Finally, the group left the small supermarket and arrived in front of the small truck, only to encounter another problem.
There were only two seats in the front of the truck. Their group had four people, adults and children included. What were they supposed to do?
“I’ll stay in the back,” Ling Qi was the first to say.
Although the small truck’s cargo compartment did have ventilation holes, it would definitely become stuffy if one stayed there too long. It could not compare to the comfort of the front.
Mu Xiao frowned and thought for a few seconds. Just as Fatty thought she was going to start struggling over it again, Mu Xiao nodded.
“I want to understand the surrounding situation, and it’ll also be easier for me to hold An Qi while looking for the hospital where her mom is. I’ll have to wrong you for now this time.”
Even though Mu Xiao had all sorts of guesses about this apocalypse in her heart, seeing was still believing. She did not want to let the novels she had read in the past lead her by the nose.
Ling Qi seemed unsurprised by Mu Xiao’s sudden decisiveness. She nodded and got into the cargo compartment.
Fatty, An Qi, and Mu Xiao also quickly got into the truck and locked the doors. With the sound of the engine, they left the small road.
The truck gradually drove onto the main road. The surrounding zombies were attracted by the sound of the vehicle and gathered toward them from all directions. The ones that were thrown behind the truck from the beginning were still manageable; in any case, they could not catch up. But there were more and more zombies ahead.
“Hold on tight.” Fatty’s bean-sized eyes narrowed, and his chubby body almost pressed against the steering wheel. After squeezing out those three words, he lifted and stepped with both feet, quickly shifting gears. The entire small truck abruptly shot forward.
An Qi, who had not had time to prepare, almost threw herself against the front windshield. Fortunately, Mu Xiao scooped her up and pulled her back to her side.
But before Mu Xiao could say anything, the truck had already reached the intersection with the newspaper kiosk. As a local who was incomparably familiar with this area, Fatty knew where the hospital was without needing to ask An Qi. He yanked the steering wheel hard and made a sharp turn.
Mu Xiao’s head knocked against the right-side window with a thud. It hurt so much that she grimaced, but she had no time to say anything. She quickly grabbed the fixed handle above the window.
An Qi reacted quickly as well, clinging tightly to Mu Xiao’s arm.
“Damn it, we’re going to hit!” Fatty did not leave them any time to catch their breath before giving another warning.
Mu Xiao looked ahead, and her entire scalp seemed to explode.
Compared with the previous main road, this road after the turn was truly terrifying. Thinking back to how she had previously planned to find a way with An Qi to attract the zombies on the main road and quietly circle over, Mu Xiao felt that was simply a suicidal fantasy.
The situation on this road was far worse. Aside from there being a zombie every five steps, there were also many cars parked haphazardly across the road. Most likely, traffic had already been congested before, and after the zombie outbreak, people had no choice but to stop their cars and flee for their lives.
In just the time it took for this guess to flash through her mind, the small truck crashed into a BMW blocking the middle of the road ahead.
After the collision, Fatty suddenly hummed, “At a time like this, what luxury cars, what famous cars? None of them can compare to my little truck!”
Before his voice had even fallen, the truck ran over three to five zombies ahead, leaving a smear of blood and flesh across the front windshield.
Fatty’s face turned deathly pale. He kept muttering the same few phrases over and over, while his hand quickly turned on the wipers to clean those things off.
Mu Xiao was a little better, but An Qi retched for a while. It was clear that she was also trying hard to endure the discomfort.
After charging recklessly for a stretch, they also left behind a long string of banging sounds.
Only after finally rushing through the next intersection and throwing those not particularly fast zombies behind them did Fatty ease off the accelerator slightly and let out a long breath.
“Damn it, these zombies don’t hold up well against being hit, but they’re too disgusting!” As he spoke, Fatty dry-heaved several times and slapped the glass hard a few times, speaking in a rough voice. “This is Haikong University. Go forward and cross another road, turn right, and the hospital isn’t far.”
This sentence was obviously said to An Qi.
When An Qi heard this news, her little face immediately looked much better. Her eyes shone brightly as she looked at Fatty.
“Fatty Uncle, thank you!”
Fatty revealed a pleased expression and shook his head smugly for a while.
“You should call me Brother, got it?”
An Qi tilted her head and thought about it with difficulty. In the end, she still nodded.
“Fatty Brother.”
“Good girl~” That call made Fatty feel extremely comfortable. But in the next instant, he saw several shadows suddenly dart out onto the road. Taking a closer look, he realized this was bad and slammed on the brakes, barely stopping before hitting them.
Mu Xiao looked over. They were four young people, three men and one woman. They looked like students from nearby Haikong University.
“What the fuck, are you looking for death by not watching the road?!” Fatty’s heart had nearly jumped out of his chest. Seeing that he had not hit anyone, his anger surged up alongside his relief. He opened the window, stuck his head out, and began cursing.
Mu Xiao was looking at the people in front of them. Fatty’s rather unharmonious words had only just entered her ears when she noticed that the way those people looked at Fatty was not right.
There was no time to think. While pushing An Qi to the right, Mu Xiao grabbed Fatty’s clothes with her left hand and desperately yanked him back into the truck. Her strength truly was not small, and she pulled Fatty back in one go.
Fatty, who had not finished cursing, was just about to shout in displeasure when he saw a cold flash before his eyes. The watermelon knife tucked at his waist swept past his vision. Just as he was frightened into thinking Mu Xiao was going to kill him to silence him, that watermelon knife had already passed through the gap in front of him and stabbed straight out the window.
A few drops of cool, sticky liquid landed on Fatty’s face. At the window, a zombie had been struck right in the nose by Mu Xiao and fell down with the watermelon knife.
“My mother…” Fatty widened his eyes, drenched in sweat. After a long while, he could only mutter that one sentence.
