Chapter 38
Mo Yueshuang had not expected that she would move into Li Sheng’s home so suddenly either.
Listening to the sounds of Li Sheng busying herself in the kitchen, Mo Yueshuang felt her whole heart soaked in a gentle warmth.
After dinner, Li Sheng looked at Mo Yueshuang with slight unease. Although Mo Yueshuang observed Li Sheng very carefully and could tell that Li Sheng was now wearing an expression of wanting to say something but stopping herself, she could not yet guess exactly what it was about.
Mo Yueshuang waited a little longer, but Li Sheng still did not tell her directly. Mo Yueshuang felt somewhat disappointed. Although she was now Li Sheng’s girlfriend, in the end, their relationship was only pretend. It was not real. Many things that could be said to an intimate lover could not be mentioned to a friend who was only pretending to be in love.
“Well…” Li Sheng sat upright, both hands on her thighs, unconsciously wiping the sweat from her palms against her pants. Li Sheng asked her, “Shuang’er, should I… go tidy up the guest room?”
They were lovers, and now they were already living together. But living together still had a distinction between staying in the same room and sleeping in separate rooms. In her heart, she wanted to share the same room with Mo Yueshuang, but if she directly brought it up like this, would it expose her purpose too much and make Mo Yueshuang uncomfortable?
Mo Yueshuang had thought of so many possibilities and had even wronged herself in her imagination, yet she had not guessed that Li Sheng’s hesitation was actually about this.
However, after Li Sheng asked this, Mo Yueshuang seemed to fall into a difficult problem too. For a moment, she did not know how to answer.
Of course she wanted to be with Li Sheng. But right now, their relationship only looked close on the surface. In reality, they both knew they were only pretending to be lovers. If they truly slept in the same room, would that be crossing a line?
Mo Yueshuang unconsciously bit her lower lip and began thinking about this matter.
Li Sheng could tell that Mo Yueshuang was nervous too, and within those complicated emotions, there was also a little anticipation.
Li Sheng secretly rejoiced. If Mo Yueshuang had anticipation, did that mean Mo Yueshuang did not reject being close to her? Could it even mean that Mo Yueshuang perhaps did not have no feelings for her at all?
In order to confirm her own guess, Li Sheng pretended to mention it casually. “Your wish is to properly experience a romantic relationship. Since we’ve already started simulating it, then let’s make it a bit more real. Let’s live in the same room.”
After saying this, Li Sheng felt her nervousness reach an unprecedented height. Even when she had fallen into a zombie horde in her previous life, she had never been this nervous. It was as if Mo Yueshuang’s next words could determine her life or death. She could only kneel on the ground and wait calmly, waiting for Mo Yueshuang to give her the final verdict.
Success or failure, taking another step forward or retreating outside the safety line—it all depended on one sentence from Mo Yueshuang.
The house was strangely quiet. Li Sheng’s hearing was very good, so good that she could clearly hear her own shallow breathing. As the seconds of waiting passed one by one, gradually, Li Sheng could hear her own heartbeat.
One beat after another, as if some evil deity were stepping closer with heavy footsteps, dragging an unbreakable iron chain as it came to claim her life.
“Sorry, Li Sheng. I think for now, we don’t need to do that yet.” Mo Yueshuang loosened her tightly clenched hands. After saying those words, her whole body relaxed, and the breath she exhaled seemed to take away all her bad emotions. Now her starry eyes were clear, and a smile appeared. “Li Sheng, you go shower first. I’ll clean these up and tidy the guest room while I’m at it.”
Li Sheng received the final result. She felt extremely disappointed, but also felt a burst of relief. Although she had been rejected, Mo Yueshuang’s expression was very good, and she did not show any rejection toward her. She really was as gentle as always.
“Then… all right! Sorry to trouble you.” When it came to sharing housework, Li Sheng did not feel there was anything inappropriate about it. She was even very willing to do things for Mo Yueshuang, and also hoped Mo Yueshuang could do things for her. She simply wanted both people in a home to participate together and work hard to make their little home better.
Li Sheng took clothes and went into the bathroom to shower. Mo Yueshuang craned her neck and watched the room door close. She thought with some regret that it would have been nice if Li Sheng had forgotten her clothes.
Unfortunately, Li Sheng handled these little details of daily life very well, always paying attention so she would not lose her sense of propriety.
Mo Yueshuang washed and disinfected all the bowls and chopsticks in the kitchen, then sorted them and put them away one by one. When she was about to take her luggage and tidy the guest room, she passed by Li Sheng’s bedroom door. Mo Yueshuang looked at it with infinite regret. In truth, if she had only nodded just now, she could have carried her luggage inside and moved in.
It was just that she trusted Li Sheng to treat her properly, but she did not trust herself to behave properly toward Li Sheng. There was no guarantee that she would not lose control and secretly do something to Li Sheng in the middle of the night.
Whether Li Sheng would notice or not, Mo Yueshuang did not want that. Li Sheng treated her sincerely, and before the two of them had clearly confirmed their relationship, she did not want to offend Li Sheng in any way. So she could only endure the pain and move into the guest room.
After Li Sheng finished showering, she suddenly regretted why she had taken her clothes in with her. If she had known earlier, she should have left them outside and used it as an excuse to ask Mo Yueshuang to bring them to her. She could always test Mo Yueshuang’s reaction again. What a miscalculation!
The two of them stayed in the same house with different forms of restraint. They both loved each other, yet were bound by the strange relationship of simulated lovers. They could not go a step further, nor could they retreat. It truly was both painful and happy.
When Li Sheng came out, Mo Yueshuang had already cleaned the kitchen. Before long, Mo Yueshuang also came out of the guest room.
“It’s all tidied up.” Mo Yueshuang smiled lightly, quickly walked to Li Sheng, and hugged her. The unique fragrance of body wash, along with the lingering warmth from having just come out of the bathroom—Mo Yueshuang felt as if she were hugging a soft, warm pillow. It was so comfortable that she wanted to carry Li Sheng to bed.
Mo Yueshuang ended the hug very quickly. “Thank you, Li Sheng.”
Li Sheng pressed her lips together. In truth, she had still wanted to hug her for a while longer.
It was fine. There was a long future ahead. Once she conquered Mo Yueshuang a little sooner, she would be able to hug her as much as she wanted.
“Go take a shower.” Li Sheng did not respond to Mo Yueshuang’s thanks and instead urged Mo Yueshuang somewhat unnaturally to hurry and wash up. After all, it was not early now, and Mo Yueshuang was still a patient. She could not stay up late and exhaust herself like this. What she needed was more rest.
While Mo Yueshuang went to shower, Li Sheng video-called Yu Jiawei in the study.
The video was pitch-black. Very soon, there was a click, and Yu Jiawei’s side lit up. Yu Jiawei leaned against the bed, weakly holding her phone. She stretched out a finger and pointed at the dark circles under her eyes, complaining and accusing, “Li Sheng, be human. Look at me. Can I withstand being tormented by you in the middle of the night?”
“Were you asleep?” Li Sheng asked.
“What do you think? I just got home, finished showering, and lay down for less than half a minute before you called. Are you an alarm clock? You’re so punctual in disturbing me.” Yu Jiawei’s resentment was about to pierce the heavens.
Li Sheng expressed slight apology. “I heard your company has a project recently that lacks funding. Whatever amount is missing, I’ll cover it.”
“My dear Goddess Li Sheng, may I ask what command you have for this humble one on this dark and windy night? As long as you speak, this humble one will go through water and tread on fire without refusal!”
Seeing how quickly her face changed and hearing that fawning, lackey tone, Li Sheng turned her face away in disgust and took a moment to recover.
Very soon, Li Sheng said with a proper and serious expression, “I already brought Mo Yueshuang home according to the guide. What do I do next?”
“Not bad. The progress is quite fast.” Yu Jiawei smiled. Very quickly, she asked Li Sheng, “Did you test her? Did she agree to share a room?”
Li Sheng regretfully indicated that she had not. Yu Jiawei was amused.
“That’s a good thing!” Yu Jiawei’s eyes lit up. Her whole person became much more energetic. She slapped the blanket on the bed and laughed. “It’s better that she refused.”
Li Sheng did not understand, so Yu Jiawei broke it down and analyzed it carefully for her.
“She believes you and trusts you. A big star can choose to trust you even in something like pretending to be lovers. According to what she said, you’re just friends, so with this kind of friendship, sleeping in the same room shouldn’t matter, right? And the person who proposed wanting a realistic romantic experience was also her. You brought up that same reasoning just now, but she still refused. That’s rather thought-provoking.”
“When you went out on location, you also stayed in the same house. Although Ranran was there, rounding up, you still shared the same bed and slept together. That shows she doesn’t reject sleeping together with a close friend. Now that your relationship has reached this point, why did she reject you?”
“First, your character is trustworthy, so she wouldn’t worry that you would do something to cross the line. Second, she repeatedly emphasized wanting a realistic couple experience. You’re already living together, but not sharing a room. That isn’t realistic at all. Yet she still wouldn’t accept it. It can be seen that what she’s afraid of isn’t that you have bad intentions, but that she herself has guilty thoughts.”
Yu Jiawei could be considered a veteran in romance. When it came to liking someone without saying it clearly, yet having all kinds of hungry desires, she had plenty of experience.
Right now, she was certain Mo Yueshuang belonged to the latter category. Mo Yueshuang definitely had Li Sheng in her heart and was afraid that if she slept with Li Sheng, something would happen.
Otherwise, only a brain-damaged big star would come up with a little game like pretending to date an outsider and playing underground romance.
In reality, Mo Yueshuang was not brain-damaged. In fact, she had an extremely sharp eye. Otherwise, she would not have rejected so many seemingly glorious good scripts in the early days and chosen to work with niche screenwriters and genius directors. Even in that filthy company, she had still managed to climb step by step and thrive.
Moreover, Mo Yueshuang was ruthless enough toward herself. She could endure.
Yu Jiawei had once thought about signing Mo Yueshuang, so she had investigated some of Mo Yueshuang’s background in advance. Da Yi’s attitude toward her had begun to show signs six years ago.
At that time, her foundation was unstable, and she did not have much money on hand. Da Yi was clearly determined to squeeze out her value. Yet while they squeezed her, Mo Yueshuang forced herself to take on even more roles and endured the company repeatedly using her.
Mo Yueshuang looked like a goddess, a flower on a high peak. Her approachable attitude was well regarded in the industry. But in reality, inside Da Yi, she was a ruthless character. Otherwise, for so many years while the old chairman was still alive, she would not have been the only female celebrity in Da Yi to rise so high.
Although the contract she signed back then was harsh, she also sought as many benefits for herself as possible.
If nothing unexpected had happened, according to the old chairman’s attitude and methods, Mo Yueshuang would have been able to wait until she and the company parted on good terms. Unfortunately, the old chairman died suddenly. The newly appointed one did not value development in the entertainment industry and instead began operating in the gray and black areas, catching Mo Yueshuang off guard.
Otherwise, if Mo Yueshuang had followed her original pace, although Da Yi would have used part of her fame, it would not have affected her reputation in the circle or her image in the eyes of fans. Once the contract ended, she would not have needed to go to another company. She could have opened her own studio, and with her position and strength, she would still have been able to thrive in the circle, or even reach another level.
The old chairman would also not have torn all decorum and made things difficult for Mo Yueshuang. After all, everyone still had to survive in the industry. Da Yi’s only high-ranking female star was leaving. Anyone with brains would not make things difficult for her. Instead, they would befriend her to attract more newcomers over.
What a pity. Step-by-step planning had been ruined by the brain-dead new boss.
Yu Jiawei sighed for a while, then immediately sighed for herself too. She had also been thinking that after Da Yi kept courting disaster for a while, she would join forces with others to swallow Da Yi. Unfortunately, someone was already making moves, and the signs had appeared several years ago. She had no idea which great god had been plotting little by little like this. That kind of patient, enduring temperament was quite similar to Mo Yueshuang’s.
Li Sheng was still waiting for her to give advice, but all she saw was Yu Jiawei sighing one sigh after another, as if her whole person had fallen into endless sorrow.
Author’s Note:
Mo Yueshuang: I really want to carry her to bed.
Li Sheng: If I keep working harder, I’ll be able to hug her more.
