A Female Lead Wants a Lifelong Union With Me (Quick Transmigration) - Chapter 19
An He slept very fitfully that night.
In her daze, she felt as if someone was calling out to her, whispering her name over and over again. The voice sounded incredibly hoarse, filled with pain and terror, sending a chill to the depths of her soul.
An He frowned, her hands clutching the bedsheets tightly as she let out unconscious whimpers.
Lin Ruoxue, who was sleeping on the floor, was woken up by her whimpering. She hurried up from her makeshift bed and sat gently beside An He.
“It’s okay, it’s okay,” she whispered, stroking An He’s face and humming a gentle, melodic nursery rhyme.
Back when An He was still raising her, in order to help the injured fox fall asleep quickly, An He would often lie beside her and hum nursery rhymes to coax her. After doing it so many times, Lin Ruoxue had committed the tune to memory. Now, she could finally sing it back to An He.
As An He listened to the humming, her expression gradually relaxed, and her grip on the quilt loosened.
Lin Ruoxue carefully touched her hand. Finding An He’s fingertips cold, she felt a pang of heartache. She held An He’s hand tightly, warming it bit by bit with her own heat. Eventually, she even summoned her tail to drape over An He, remaining in that posture until morning.
When An He woke up the next day, the first thing she saw was Lin Ruoxue’s smiling face.
“You’re awake?” Lin Ruoxue smiled, her eyes bright.
“Mhm,” An He responded, reflexively reaching out to pat her head.
As she did, she realized Lin Ruoxue’s ears and tail were both exposed. Perhaps happy to be touched, her ears perked up spiritedly. That big tail had also wound its way around An He at some point, nuzzling against her arm.
At the end of the day, this was the fox she had raised herself. Even though they had “slept” together, An He found she couldn’t bring herself to hate her; in fact, she thought Lin Ruoxue looked rather cute right now.
After sitting and patting her for a while, An He prepared to get out of bed to wash up. Although she was awake, her mind was still a bit muddled, and everything around her felt surreal.
However, the dream from last night became increasingly clear.
In that dream, An He had seen herself. She didn’t know where she was, only that she was lying in total darkness with a bundle of white fluff beside her. Looking back now, she realized that was likely Lin Ruoxue’s original form.
The “self” in the dream… was covered in blood, her breathing growing weaker, her eyes hollow. It was as if she were about to die, and a thick white mist had even clouded her vision until… she finally saw a different color.
Green—the color of a fox’s eyes.
Despite having woken up, An He still felt a lingering sense of dread. Even as she stood before the washbasin, she stole a secret glance back at Lin Ruoxue.
Lin Ruoxue was standing by the bed making it, smoothing out the corners of the quilt. Noticing An He’s gaze, she looked up happily and smiled, her ears twitching upward.
Dreams are probably the opposite of reality. An He sighed softly. How could a Lin Ruoxue like this ever hurt her?
System: “That’s not necessarily true. Ever heard the story of the ungrateful wolf?”
“Lin Ruoxue isn’t ungrateful,” An He said firmly.
“Right,” the System replied with a click of its tongue. “Strictly speaking, she’d be an ungrateful fox.”
An He: “…Just shut up for a bit!”
After washing up, An He summoned Lin Ruoxue to go downstairs for breakfast.
The moment they pushed open the door and prepared to head down, they found a massive crowd gathered at the inn’s entrance. They were all standing outside, faces filled with panic, amidst a din of hushed discussions and the crying of children.
An He instinctively scanned the crowd and saw the inn’s regulars—A-Huang, A-Lü, A-Hong, and the others.
“What happened?” Lin Ruoxue asked softly, feeling strange. “It’s like they’ve seen a ghost.”
“They are ghosts,” An He turned to look at her, caught between laughter and tears. “Unless they’ve seen something…”
Mid-sentence, both she and Lin Ruoxue widened their eyes.
“Crap!” An He barked, leaping down the steps first.
In her urgency, she didn’t even walk; she practically bounced and scrambled down. Watching from behind, Lin Ruoxue thought she looked like a ball rolling down, bumping into every corner of the stairs. Heartaching for her, Lin Ruoxue quickly manipulated the wind, allowing An He to ride a gust straight outside.
When the ghosts outside saw the Great Immortal arrive, they hurriedly made way, letting her stand right in the center.
Ghost Brother was also in the crowd. His already pale face was even whiter, and he was incessantly spitting out bloody froth.
“What is it?! What happened?” An He faced the crowd and grabbed Ghost Brother, asking loudly.
Ghost Brother didn’t speak. He raised a trembling hand and pointed behind her, his lips quivering. An He turned around and nearly vomited at the scene.
Wang Daniu—the man who had come to her for help yesterday noon—had appeared in her field of vision again.
But this time, he appeared in a disassembled state, like one of those Barbie dolls An He used to play with as a child that needed to be snapped together. One head, one torso, two arms, two legs, and two feet. These scattered parts were all nailed to the inn’s wall, arranged in a terrifying, upside-down display.
“Holy sh*t…” even the System couldn’t help but curse, followed by uncontrollable dry heaves.
An He was worried about the scene and also worried the System would puke inside her head.
“Don’t you have a mosaic function!” she finally snapped, telling the System to block its own vision.
“This isn’t something I can control!” the System gagged, its voice hoarse. “The regulations state I can only block vision when you’re ‘applauding for love’ (having sex). I can’t block a scene like this!”
“Seriously?” An He felt helpless. She frowned as she stepped forward to examine the corpse while continuing to ask in her mind, “Are you systems really this weak?”
“We spend all day with our superiors promoting positive energy!” the System shrieked. “Who encounters this kind of stuff for fun?!”
“True…” An He sighed.
Lin Ruoxue had come out by now, standing silently behind An He. An He didn’t have time to attend to her and was busy examining the body. After a while, she noticed Lin Ruoxue move and crouch down beside her.
An He reflexively glanced at her and saw that Lin Ruoxue’s eyes were filled with ice.
“Xixi,” she whispered, her voice trembling slightly. “Nothing happened. Let’s go back to the room, okay?”
“Huh?” An He was stunned. “How can you say nothing happened? Didn’t you see—”
“I don’t want you meddling in this,” Lin Ruoxue interrupted, her voice dropping. “This is too dangerous. I don’t want you getting caught in danger…”
Hearing this, An He realized Lin Ruoxue was simply worried about her. At that realization, a wave of warmth washed over her heart, and her voice softened.
“It’s no matter,” she said, reaching out to take Lin Ruoxue’s hand and explaining slowly. “I’ll protect myself. I won’t run into any danger. There’s no need to force—”
“I’m not forcing you!” Lin Ruoxue shook her head quickly, her fingers interlacing with An He’s with a trace of unease. “I’m just giving you a suggestion. I know you know what you’re doing. I won’t force you…”
An He: Right, except for the parts about going to bed and making me eat vegetables.
“So don’t feel troubled,” Lin Ruoxue continued, oblivious to An He’s thoughts. “If you really… really want to handle this, that’s fine, but I must accompany you. Otherwise, I won’t be at ease.”
“Mm.” Looking at the fear in her eyes, An He realized she was truly afraid for her. She smiled, patted Lin Ruoxue’s back twice, and said softly, “I know.”
