A Female Lead Wants a Lifelong Union With Me (Quick Transmigration) - Chapter 18
Lin Ruoxue was standing outside, leaning against the base of the wall.
The man’s shadow had been flickering back and forth inside the room, cast upon the window paper, making her feel a bit anxious. However, relying on her excellent self-restraint, she remained outside the entire time, waiting obediently.
After a while, she noticed An He getting up from the bed. She and the man began walking out of the room, one after the other.
Lin Ruoxue stood her ground and swallowed hard, waiting for An He to open the door so she could “pick her up” again.
The man was the first to step out. He didn’t notice her standing there and hurried forward with urgent steps. Immediately after, An He emerged. She was dressed formally, giving off a slight air of a transcendent, sage-like immortal.
“How is it?” As soon as she came out, Lin Ruoxue immediately asked, “What did he say to you?”
“There is a matter I need to handle,” An He said softly. “You—”
“I’m coming with you!” Before An He could finish, Lin Ruoxue quickly grabbed her hand.
An He looked up at her, and in the end, said nothing else, only giving a light nod.
“Let’s go,” she said.
“Okay,” Lin Ruoxue responded, a surge of joy welling up in her heart.
She didn’t know exactly what An He was going to do, but she didn’t ask; the fact that An He agreed to take her along was already good enough. This was the first time An He had proactively taken her out, and Lin Ruoxue felt that even if they were headed toward a mountain of blades or a sea of fire, she would follow without a second thought.
As long as An He was willing, she was willing.
The man led them through the twists and turns of the ancient street, finally guiding them into a small alley.
Although it was daytime, the alley was pitch black, and the surroundings looked dilapidated—like a shadow clinging to the back of prosperity. As An He walked, she felt something was off, sensing they were heading toward some kind of shady, under-the-table transaction.
“Come, come!” The man, oblivious to An He’s thoughts, stepped into a cramped little shack and waved the two of them over from the doorway.
An He acknowledged him, but just as she was about to enter, Lin Ruoxue ducked inside a few steps ahead of her.
Lin Ruoxue had intended to check for danger first, but she never expected that as soon as she entered, she would see a human-shaped object lying in the corner. The man stepped forward and pulled back the tattered cloth covering it, fully exposing the thing.
It was… a corpse.
“What are your intentions?!” Before the man could even speak, Lin Ruoxue had already grabbed him by the collar, her eyes filled with murderous intent.
Seeing this scene, An He knew Lin Ruoxue had misunderstood. She quickly stepped forward, patted Lin Ruoxue’s arm, and coaxed her softly to let the man go.
Lin Ruoxue looked at her a few times, hesitating to speak. Ultimately, she listened to An He and released the man back to the ground, stepping back a few paces to stand by An He’s side. However, her claws remained extended, with no intention of retracting them.
Watching those sharp claws, the man swallowed in terror. He instinctively felt that the “Great Immortal” still had a long way to go before successfully “enlightening” this girl.
“My apologies.” An He nodded to the man apologetically, then stepped forward and crouched beside the corpse.
When a person dies, they become a ghost. But if a ghost dies again, their soul is completely scattered—erased from the world forever. Unless there was immense resentment involved, An He really couldn’t fathom who would be so ruthless as to kill a ghost a second time.
When the man had come to find her earlier, he had briefly explained how he discovered the body. The man’s name was Wang Daniu; he was a vegetable vendor who lived in this area. This small shack served as his warehouse for storing goods.
This morning, he had come to pick up stock as usual, only to find a dead person—no, a dead ghost—lying inside. The ghost’s death was horrific: eyes wide open, features distorted, and the body completely shriveled up.
Wang Daniu was terrified and didn’t know what to do. There was everything on this Ghost Street except for an official in charge. He thought for a long time without knowing who to call. Just as he was covering the body with the cloth to handle it simply, An He’s name suddenly popped into his mind.
An He: So I was just an afterthought.
System: Be content. Given your meager fortune-telling skills, the fact that someone thought to call you for this is already the greatest “favor” you could receive.
An He: She felt like the word “favor” was used a bit awkwardly here.
“What’s awkward about it?” the System said. “Haven’t you seen everyone else use it? Like the ‘favor of the overbearing prince,’ the ‘favor of the schemesome emperor,’ or ‘The Tsundere Prince’s Gentle Favor.’”
An He: “…Stop reading those trashy novels, will you?”
She sighed, and after examining the corpse meticulously several times, she stood up.
“Great Immortal, Great Immortal.” Seeing her stand up, Wang Daniu craned his neck and asked urgently, “Did you find any clues?”
“There are no wounds on the body; it doesn’t look like a death caused by a sharp weapon.” An He recalled the details, slowly piecing things together. “It doesn’t look like poisoning either; the lip and skin color are normal.”
“It seems more like… tsk.” She paused, unsure how to continue.
“It looks like they were sucked dry,” Lin Ruoxue, standing to the side, suddenly whispered before An He could speak again.
“Mhm.” An He didn’t deny her view and nodded slowly.
“Su—Sucked dry?” Wang Daniu was stunned, clearly unable to comprehend. “How can that be? Who could do such a thing? We are all… all decent, honest ghosts…”
“I can’t rule out the possibility of a ghost with extreme resentment, but it could also be a large monster, or even a human,” An He said.
As she spoke, she felt uneasy, sensing that something else was about to happen. She couldn’t settle her mind. It wasn’t until Lin Ruoxue noticed her distress and stepped forward to take her hand that An He finally felt a bit better.
But in that instant, a man’s face suddenly flashed through her mind. For some reason, she had suddenly remembered him.
It was that man—the one who had bumped into her before, and the one who had come to her for a fortune reading.
