A Scummy Alpha Supporting Character Accidentally Marks the Heroine After Transmigrating into a Book (GL) - Chapter 26
When Yan Nanjue woke up, Ji Ziyi had already deleted her social media post from the previous day and replaced it with a new one. Yan Nanjue gave it a casual “Like” and didn’t pay much attention, getting up to wash.
It was almost the Qingming Festival (Tomb-Sweeping Day). After one more day of work, she would have a break.
Yan Nanjue couldn’t help but complain to the System: “I sometimes suspect you systems tricked me into coming here just to work. Who in their right mind transmigrates into a book only to work so diligently and conscientiously?!”
【System: There are plenty of hosts as unlucky as you.】
Yan Nanjue instinctively perked up her ears. “What?”
【System: There was a corporate drone host who worked for ten years in a mission world. She was a drone before transmigrating and stayed one after. Right as she was about to complete the mission, she was imprisoned by her target. Ten years of work for nothing. By the time the system took her back, she had gone completely insane with rage.】
【Then there was the unlucky soul whose target lost their memory every single month. She did n+1 months of work, and in the end, her progress was zero. She jumped off a building in frustration.】
【There was another host who raised a child for sixteen years, only to find out she had raised the wrong person.】
【And that one I mentioned before who did twenty years of missions—later she was assigned to another system. I heard she changed bodies four times and still couldn’t survive in the mission world.】
“…Enough, stop right there.”
Yan Nanjue felt her heart go cold and cut off the System’s stories. Every person the System mentioned made her feel a bit more chilled. She felt sorry for them just listening.
【System: It’s just work. Everything is for the mission.】
After hearing that list of unlucky souls, Yan Nanjue suddenly felt a surge of motivation. She planned to use the rare holiday to carefully review the original text and figure out how to lower the heroine’s blackening value.
Since the heat period, the blackening value had stagnated.
She had a perfect plan, but on the first day of the holiday, the villa welcomed an uninvited guest.
Yan Nanjue was about to walk into the living room when she froze.
Luo Shuqing was here.
The sound of her talking to the cook drifted over from afar—soft and gentle. The person she was talking to was clearly relaxed, laughing and covering their mouth. Luo Shuqing was exceptionally good to everyone around the original host; from Assistant Lin to the butler and the servants, almost everyone knew and liked her.
“Help, why is she here?” Yan Nanjue panicked internally. “Where’s the heroine? Is she awake?”
In her panic, she grabbed a passing butler to ask. Learning that the heroine had woken up earlier and was already out watering flowers, Yan Nanjue’s heart leapt into her throat.
“Sister Nanjue!”
Luo Shuqing, sharp-eyed, spotted the half of her body visible behind the stairs and called out loudly.
Yan Nanjue dismissed the butler and walked downstairs. “Why did you come over without a word?”
Luo Shuqing looked at her with a clear smile. “We don’t live far apart; it’s only a few dozen minutes away. No need for a formal heads-up.” She held up a paper bag. “I baked some cookies and chocolates, and some other snacks. They’re all low-sugar. I brought them specifically for you to try.”
As she handed over the box, Luo Shuqing’s gaze suddenly faltered. A second later, concern welled in her eyes. “Sister Nanjue, what happened to your shoulder? Why is there gauze? Did you accidentally get hurt?”
Yan Nanjue touched her right shoulder, feeling the medical gauze through her silk loungewear. This was where Bai Wan had bitten her. The wound had healed, but the location was awkward—right at the base of her neck. Even with a high-collared shirt, half of the circular bite mark was visible. Yan Nanjue had been covering it with gauze for the past few days, fearing people would see.
Of all the awkward places and marks…
“I accidentally scratched it,” Yan Nanjue said, spacing out for a moment.
“Is it serious? Will it scar?” Luo Shuqing moved closer, instinctively reaching out to pull her collar aside to check.
Yan Nanjue reacted strongly, taking a large step back to dodge her hand. Boundaries, boundaries! Bai Wan is in the backyard!
Luo Shuqing’s hand froze in mid-air. She stared at her empty hand for a few seconds before looking up, her bright eyes turning dark in an instant.
“…Do you hate me that much, Sister Nanjue?” she asked.
Yan Nanjue’s reply was flat. “No.”
Luo Shuqing looked hurt, biting her lip. “I just wanted to see if it was serious…” Her voice was so quiet it was almost a whisper. She tried to force a smile, but it was stiff. “I didn’t mean to do anything. You don’t have to avoid me like I’m a poisonous snake, Sister Nanjue…”
She blinked rapidly, a thin mist appearing in her eyes. She was struggling to hold it in. “You didn’t used to be like this.”
Yan Nanjue looked away. She wasn’t the person Luo Shuqing loved, so she couldn’t handle those feelings. All she could do was retreat. “I told you last time, I am married. I have a wife, Shuqing. Don’t do these intimate things anymore. It’s not appropriate for us. —And I don’t like it.”
“…I know,” Luo Shuqing replied softly.
Yan Nanjue thought: No, you don’t. If you did, you wouldn’t have framed Bai Wan repeatedly in the original book or nearly caused her death.
Luo Shuqing kept her hands behind her back, pinching her palms hard where no one could see. Her fine features still wore a smile. “But even so, we’re still friends. Should I keep my distance just because I’m a Beta?”
Yan Nanjue said coldly, “I’m just telling you to watch your behavior.”
A flash of darkness seemed to pass through Luo Shuqing’s eyes. “I’ll always remember what you said, Sister Nanjue. I only want to be your friend. I’m not hoping for anything else.” She put down the gift bag. “The cookies are your favorite flavor. I’m going now.” She paused. “Next Thursday is my birthday. You’ll come, right?”
Yan Nanjue nodded. Refusing repeatedly would be OOC.
As Luo Shuqing walked out, the butler whispered, “Miss… the Madam just came back from the garden. You and Miss Luo… she seems to have seen you.”
Yan Nanjue jumped. She stared at the butler, who rubbed his nose guiltily. “I wanted to warn you, but the Madam was watching.”
Yan Nanjue opened her mouth but didn’t know what to say. Does Bai Wan walk without sound?! How many times had she been caught in an awkward moment now?!
“Don’t worry about her,” Yan Nanjue said coldly, masking her internal panic. “Did you come just to tell me this nonsense?”
The butler bowed. “This morning, Chairman Yan called from overseas. She told me to tell you that she’s flying back this afternoon. She wants you to wait for her at home; she’ll go to the ancestral home with you when she returns.”
Yan Nanjue’s pupils dilated in shock. This “Chairman Yan” was Yan Changqing, the current Chairman of the Yan Group and the original host’s Alpha mother. She was a ruthless “smiling fox.”
What shocked Yan Nanjue was that Chairman Yan wasn’t supposed to appear until after the divorce. Why was she appearing early? And she knew that in the original book, the mother didn’t like Bai Wan at all…
“What else did she say?”
“Nothing. Her exact words were for you to wait for her. Not another word.”
Yan Nanjue frowned and went upstairs to knock on Bai Wan’s door. She told her about the mother’s return. “If your performance doesn’t satisfy me, you won’t be going to the nursing home this month.”
Bai Wan’s hand on the doorknob tightened. She looked at her coldly. “I don’t need you to remind me.”
“Also,” Yan Nanjue added, “next week is Luo Shuqing’s birthday banquet. You’re coming with me.”
Bai Wan stared at her for a few seconds, a slow mockery appearing in her eyes, and slammed the door.
1:30 PM.
A commotion at the gate signaled Chairman Yan’s arrival. A tall woman walked in wearing a black trench coat and sunglasses, exuding a powerful Alpha aura. She had a perpetual “smiling-but-not-smiling” expression.
Yan Nanjue spoke coldly: “Your little wife didn’t come back with you?”
Yan Changqing took off her sunglasses. “Is that how you speak to your elder?” she said slowly. “You don’t even call me ‘Mother.’ Your upbringing has gone to the dogs. And I’ve told you, you should call her Aunt Yue.”
The mother and daughter had a terrible relationship. The mother’s first wife (the original host’s mother) died shortly after birth, and their relationship remained like that of strangers. Her second wife was currently undergoing treatment abroad.
“She’s still in chemo,” Yan Changqing said dismissively. “She can’t return. I’m back to handle some business.” Her gaze swept upstairs. “Where is your new wife?”
“She’s not here. You’ll see her at the restaurant tonight.”
“You guessed I wanted to meet her. Don’t bother unpacking my suitcase; take it straight to my room.” She handed her glasses to the butler. “Prepare the car. We’re going to the ancestral home.”
Yan Nanjue followed. Why was she going to the ancestral home immediately? Why was she back?
At the Ancestral Home.
Yan Changqing threw a sealed kraft paper envelope on the table in front of Grandma Yan. “Someone’s hands are dirty. The commotion was loud enough for me to hear it overseas.” Her eyes were sharp as a hawk’s. “I’m not dead yet, and they dare to pull this under my nose? They must be tired of living.”
Grandma Yan looked through the files, a cold light in her eyes matching her daughter’s. “They are quite bold.”
Yan Changqing tapped the armrest. “You know why I’m back.”
Grandma Yan called the head butler and announced, “Have Dr. Li come. I am unwell and cannot see guests.” Meaning: she wouldn’t interfere or take anyone’s pleas for mercy.
Yan Nanjue listened, piecing it together. The Yan family web was vast; with the mother away, some people were getting restless. This likely involved her—she was the successor, and they were testing her. In the original book, these corrupt family members eventually helped Bai Wan bring down the Yan Group.
I have to protect the company. If it falls, my mission fails.
Evening, at the Restaurant.
Yan Changqing swirled her wine, looking at her daughter. “You seem nervous.”
“No,” Yan Nanjue replied coldly.
“I investigated this Bai Wan,” Yan Changqing said with a trace of arrogance. “No family, no background, parents dead—an orphan who couldn’t be more ordinary, with two siblings as baggage. A tragic orphan who is useless except for her face and her Omega status. I’m curious what moved you so much that you gave up the alliance with the Luo family and went against me.”
She clasped her hands. “The cold CEO marries the resilient little flower from the slums… what a touching drama. I didn’t know my proud daughter, who looks down on everyone, fell in love with a ‘damsel in distress’?”
Her tone became heavy with pressure. “Little Que, why did you really insist on marrying her?”
Just outside the door, Bai Wan’s hand was on the handle. The question fell clearly into her ears.
