A Scummy Alpha Supporting Character Accidentally Marks the Heroine After Transmigrating into a Book (GL) - Chapter 59
The corridor fell into a peculiar silence.
Yan Nanjue let out a cold laugh. “Playing mute again? It’s always like this—you only calm down once I lose my temper.”
Bai Wan remained silent for a long time before uttering a single sentence: “Whatever you want.”
“Whatever I want?”
Yan Nanjue scoffed as if she had heard a joke. “Mrs. Yan, please get this straight: you were the one who walked over and started spewing that nonsense, and now you say ‘whatever I want’? Are you too naive, or did I give you the illusion that I’m a good-tempered person?”
Bai Wan looked directly into her dark, clear eyes, almost trying to peer into the very depths of them. Her lips parted slightly.
“Does my word really matter to you? My choices have never been important, have they?”
Yan Nanjue countered, “What do you think?”
“How many times do I have to remind you of your status? Bai Wan. Mrs. Yan.” She used both names in succession, her tone laced with a faint, mocking edge.
Bai Wan knit her brows very slightly. After a brief silence, she spoke: “I understand.”
“Is it just ‘understand’?”
Bai Wan asked, “Then what else do you want from me?”
“Say you trust me.”
Her tone was cold and arrogant, sharp as frost.
Those four simple words fell into Bai Wan’s ears like a dragonfly skimming the water’s surface, creating ripple after ripple that shimmered outward. Branches of doubt grew wildly, almost entangling her entire heart, tightening and shackling it. Under the pressure, her heart skipped a beat, then began to throb rapidly.
…She had clearly burned everything to ash. Yet the roots deep in her heart were still incessantly sprouting new buds. It seemed that no matter what, she could not escape.
She was like prey fallen into a trap; inexplicable emotions submerged and swallowed her like an overwhelming tide. She was like a butterfly, cocooned by a thousand threads.
What was it? What was this emotion?
Bai Wan couldn’t find an answer. Some questions didn’t seem to need answers; all she could do was perform a total excision. Just as she treated anything that caused her to lose her composure, she would distance herself or destroy it. She threw it away time and again, yet the branches grew back just as fiercely.
Bai Wan’s tongue felt itchy, almost wanting to ask: On what basis? On what basis should I trust you?
Yan Nanjue stared into her eyes. “Say it.”
“Say you trust me, no matter the situation.”
“I don’t want to hear a single word of doubt from your mouth, ever. You are the person I bought, Bai Wan. You must trust me. This isn’t a discussion; it’s a notification.”
Yan Nanjue was actually a bit terrified inside. Is this too controlling? Will Bai Wan be angry? After all, these words put her in the position of a commodity. Whatever, I’ll force her to believe me first and worry about the rest later.
Yan Nanjue steadied her nerves, making her gaze and tone as icy as possible. She looked down at her, striving to give the impression that her “notification” was a condescending favor.
“Fine,” Bai Wan spoke under her gaze, her expression unchanged. “I trust you.”
Yan Nanjue breathed a sigh of relief. Phew, it looks like she isn’t angry.
She asked, “Finally figured out your status, Mrs. Yan?”
Bai Wan looked at her. “I’ve done as you requested. Let go, I’m leaving.”
Yan Nanjue tightened her grip for a split second, looking down at her, before letting go with a dismissive shove. A ring of obvious red marks appeared on the wrist she had gripped. Yan Nanjue glanced at them and guiltily moved her gaze away.
“Remember what you said, and I will naturally keep my promise.” She added a threat: “If you speak such nonsense again, it’s a breach of contract, and I’ll have no reason to keep my promise to you.” She was referring to the two children sleeping upstairs.
Bai Wan lowered her eyes, avoiding her gaze. Her lips moved slightly, repeating soundlessly: Promise.
Does a thing like this even count as a promise?
The sound of muffled footsteps faded as the person in indoor slippers left. Bai Wan reached out, encircling the wrist marked with red. She covered it with her palm. A faint warmth transferred to her fingertips.
Bai Wan’s peripheral vision caught something. she reached out to pick it up—a brownish strand of hair on her collar. It was much shorter than hers and slightly curled. She held the strand loosely in her palm and suddenly closed her eyes, opening them only after a long time.
Bai Wan’s throat felt dry; her fingers rubbed together, but she ultimately just made a swallowing motion. No one knew what she was thinking at this moment—not even she fully understood it herself.
Upstairs, Yan Nanjue had finished her shower and was slumped in a lounge chair, overcome by sleepiness.
【Hey, you’re being lazy and not drying your hair again.】
Yan Nanjue protested: “It’s really a hassle!” Her hair reached her shoulder blades and was thick. In her original world, she had always hated drying her hair; after every shower, she would lay thick towels on the sofa and lie down, letting her hair air-dry.
【You haven’t even dried the roots. Sleeping with wet hair leads to migraines and catching a cold. Catching a cold leads to a chain reaction… long term, you’ll become sensitive to the cold. There are many sequelae…】
The System nagged her incessantly about the dangers of sleeping with wet hair. Yan Nanjue thought for a moment. “No wonder I had occasional headaches before. I thought…”
【System: . 】
【Now that you know, get up. You’ll be crying when you’re forced to drink ginger soup after catching a cold.】
Hearing this, Yan Nanjue startled. “I guess I’ll dry the roots then.”
She patiently dried her hair to a semi-dry state and applied hair oil under the System’s supervision. Then, she went downstairs to the kitchen, took a bottle of ice water from the fridge, and unscrewed the cap right by the door.
Footsteps sounded. “Give me one.”
Yan Nanjue recognized the footsteps and tossed a frost-covered bottle over.
Bai Wan took a few sips. Her gaze swept over Yan Nanjue’s collar; damp hair ends rested against her jade-white neck, lightly brushing the skin and leaving an imperceptible water trail.
She had showered. Bai Wan smelled the scent of rose essential oil and a damp mist. All other scents were gone. Condensation slid down the bottle, wetting Bai Wan’s fingers.
“One of the team-building days next week is a Saturday. Make sure to tell Xiao Qing and the others in advance.”
Bai Wan’s drifting thoughts were suddenly pulled back. She frowned momentarily. “Understood.”
She watched Yan Nanjue’s retreating back, vaguely guessing something, but delaying any confirmation.
The team-building trip departed on Thursday for the coastal H-City and was set to end on Saturday. Yan Group’s employee benefits were always excellent—all expenses covered. Saturday was considered overtime, but employees who didn’t wish to stay could apply to go home on Friday night.
Yan Nanjue finished her last page of documents just as she received news of the employees’ arrival.
Lin Furuo knocked and entered. “The driver is waiting downstairs, and the butler has packed your luggage. President Yan, shall we head to the airport now?”
Yan Nanjue closed her laptop. “Let’s go.”
When they arrived at the airport, another director from the company was already waiting in the first-class cabin. Leaders of her rank had taken earlier flights, while regular employees took the high-speed rail. This director had been delayed by business and happened to be on the same flight as Yan Nanjue.
“President Yan,” the director said respectfully.
Yan Nanjue gave a slight nod. The director smiled, “I didn’t expect you to attend this year. The ocean view in H-City is quite spectacular.”
“It is.”
A few minutes before takeoff, Yan Nanjue opened her phone and saw a message from Ji Ziyi.
[Ji Ziyi: Who is this, Great President Yan?]
[Ji Ziyi: (Image)]
She looked and saw it was the check-in list for the hotel’s presidential suite. Her name was right there.
[Yan Nanjue: Your hotel?]
[Ji Ziyi: Mm-hmm.]
[Ji Ziyi: I came here to clear my head and do an inspection. Didn’t expect a pleasant surprise. I heard your company is doing team-building? Why are you joining the fun, Great President?]
She sent another attachment—a selfie of Ji Ziyi in sunglasses at the beach. The sun was bright, the sky was clear, and the sea was a deep blue.
[Yan Nanjue: You hid in another city?]
[Ji Ziyi: What are you talking about? It’s ‘clearing my head.’ Do you understand?]
[Ji Ziyi: Tsk tsk tsk. Guess what? I checked the backend for fun. Turns out our President Yan traveled a thousand miles to chase her wife. President Yan, oh President Yan, you never participate in these stupid team-building events.]
[Yan Nanjue: Cheng Lian’s business card is still with Lin Furuo.]
Ji Ziyi went silent instantly. It was a long time before she sent another message. The plane was about to take off, so Yan Nanjue turned her phone off. Once they reached cruising altitude, she turned it back on to find several messages.
[Ji Ziyi: Ah, the weather is so nice today. I think I was just possessed. What? A-Yan, you said you’re coming to play with me? That’s great! I’m honored to welcome the Great President.]
[Ji Ziyi: I’ll use it as an excuse to call Wanjun over too. It’s boring to stay home.]
[Ji Ziyi: I’m requisitioning your suite first. We’ll talk when you get here.]
[Ji Ziyi: I’m going to the restaurant for lunch. Just got back from the sea and I’m starving.]
[Ji Ziyi: Oh ho! Look who I see.]
[Ji Ziyi: (Video)]
Yan Nanjue clicked on the fifteen-second video. Ji Ziyi had filmed it looking down from the restaurant’s floor-to-ceiling window. The person below was dressed in simple clothes with her hair in a bun. The distance was a bit far, and the quality was grainy, but it couldn’t hide the beauty of the person in the frame.
A beautiful and sharp Omega; her beauty was like a cold blade, keeping people at a distance, making one fear to desecrate her.
Yan Nanjue’s finger slipped, and she accidentally tapped the screen, saving the video. She intended to delete it from her album, but Ji Ziyi’s messages jumped out again.
[Ji Ziyi: How much longer, A-Yan? Wanjun already agreed; she said she’ll be here this afternoon.]
[Yan Nanjue: On the plane.]
[Yan Nanjue: Don’t touch my bed. Anything else is fine.]
The plane landed in the afternoon. The sun was brilliant, and its warmth made Yan Nanjue feel cozy. She put on her sunglasses and watched the scenery blur past the car window. Her phone kept vibrating; Ji Ziyi was bored and harassing her by sending messages word by word.
Lin Furuo handed the suitcases to the bellhop and followed Yan Nanjue empty-handed. A doorman trotted ahead to lead them, carefully swiping a card for the VIP-exclusive elevator.
“Guests, the VIP passage is this way. Please wait a moment.”
The “ding” sounded and the elevator descended. Yan Nanjue stepped inside with Lin Furuo following right behind. Lin Furuo’s room was a high-tier standard suite, located just below Yan Nanjue’s.
At that same moment, another elevator door opened. Bai Wan and her colleagues walked out.
The doors of the VIP elevator cabin slowly closed. Bai Wan, having just stepped out, felt a sudden sensation and turned back as if by instinct.
Through the narrowing gap of the doors, she caught a fleeting glimpse of the gorgeous Alpha. The latter was looking down, adjusting her cuffs with a casual, lazy grace. Her lowered gaze held less “affection” and more of the natural aura of a dominant Alpha; her nonchalant manner was exceptionally striking.
Bai Wan paused.
Why is Yan Nanjue here?
