After Becoming the Love-Brained Female Lead’s Best Friend - Chapter 17
The next day, neither Ye Wanyin nor Fang Shu got up.
Fang Shu had forced herself to chew through all the knowledge points. Although she had not understood a single one, she still felt she was amazing.
Ye Wanyin had read ten chapters of comics in one night. She had reread the first chapter more than ten times and barely managed to understand what the first ten chapters were about.
At noon, the two of them came out of their rooms, each wearing an utterly drained expression. Fang Shu looked at the person opposite her and rubbed her face hard, trying to make herself look a little more energetic.
“How did your reading go?”
Ye Wanyin, who was working hard to recall the plot, answered steadily, “Not bad.”
Then she asked, “How did your preview go?”
Fang Shu, who had not understood a single thing, calmly said, “I read all of it.”
The two tacitly did not ask further and peacefully enjoyed a pleasant lunch.
However, after lunch, what had to be faced still had to be faced. Ye Wanyin copied the example problem from the study guide onto scratch paper for Fang Shu to test the waters. As a result, twenty minutes passed, and Fang Shu was still staring blankly at that one problem.
Ye Wanyin took the scratch paper over and discovered that the correct answer had already been written on it early on. Beside it were steps patched together from here and there, completely unrelated to the answer. She frowned slightly.
“How did you get this answer?”
Fang Shu laid her cards on the table. “I don’t know how to do it.”
Even without Fang Shu saying it, Ye Wanyin knew how she had known the correct answer. The original question was a multiple-choice question, and example problems generally had the answer right below them. Fang Shu had most likely glanced at it and memorized it.
Ye Wanyin dragged the study guide over and asked Fang Shu which parts she had not understood after reading it last night. Fang Shu lay there, looking at the book for a while and then at her for a while. Finally, she asked the question in her heart.
“Why would you think an underachiever like me knows what questions I need to ask?”
Ye Wanyin realized she had still underestimated Fang Shu’s ability as an underachiever. This section was actually connected to the previous section. She had thought that after Fang Shu learned the previous section, she would at least be able to understand a little of this one. She never expected that after learning the previous section, Fang Shu would still have no idea what was going on in the next one.
She resigned herself to explaining the knowledge points from the very beginning. In order to awaken the knowledge Fang Shu had learned yesterday, she patiently explained the connection between the two sections again and again.
In the end, Fang Shu nodded in a half-understanding daze.
Ye Wanyin knew that Fang Shu’s current state was one where the knowledge points were completely misty and intangible. To make them solidify, simply explaining them several more times would not work. It had to be combined with doing questions.
So this time, Ye Wanyin still copied the example problem from the book, but the difference was that she changed the numbers in it. She also told Fang Shu not to even think about cobbling together the answer again.
Fang Shu looked at the question in front of her. The knowledge she had just taken in had no idea how to arrange itself properly, let alone which knowledge point should be used as the entry point.
Fang Shu felt like she was a wordless heavenly book, carrying a massive amount of knowledge in vain, without a single word willing to leave a trace on her pages.
Fang Shu could not help biting the end of her pen.
“You don’t know how?” Ye Wanyin noticed her spacing out.
Fang Shu almost wanted to throw the book. She sighed again and again. “It’s too hard.”
Ye Wanyin placed the scratch paper between them, preparing to explain an example problem to her.
“The questions in this section are indeed a little harder, but as long as you master the technique, you’ll understand.”
Ye Wanyin explained a relatively typical problem in the middle as an example, then pushed the scratch paper over for Fang Shu to do. This time, Fang Shu was a little smoother, but she could only do questions that were simpler than the one from earlier and had almost no variations. Once the later questions changed more, Fang Shu became lost.
Ye Wanyin kept paying attention to her. Seeing that Fang Shu had been sitting there unmoving for a long time, she knew Fang Shu did not know how to continue. She quickly came over and checked her work. The first few questions were all correct, but she did not know how to do any of the later ones.
Ye Wanyin first picked one and explained it to her. After Fang Shu understood it, she said, “Rest for a bit first.”
Fang Shu nearly looked at her as if she were a stranger. Ye Wanyin explained, “The ones after this are more difficult. Take a moment first.”
After all, Fang Shu had nearly looked dazed from just that question that only varied slightly from the typical one. If Ye Wanyin continued explaining the harder ones, Fang Shu would probably start seeing stars.
So Fang Shu sat there blankly for a while, letting her nearly burning brain cool down. Then she began asking Ye Wanyin, “How much did you read last night?”
Ye Wanyin gave an “uh,” and finally answered honestly, “I read ten chapters of comics.”
As expected, Fang Shu frowned and said with disdain, “You read so slowly. I can finish an entire comic in one night.”
Ye Wanyin: “…”
She really could not compare with that.
Then Fang Shu continued asking, “Did you learn anything?”
Fang Shu had specially placed all the yuri-related novels, comics, and anime into one folder, and had put them somewhere obvious so Ye Wanyin could see them at a glance.
Ye Wanyin worked hard to recall what she had read last night and said uncertainly, “Big sister is so handsome?”
Fang Shu: “?”
“Big sister dominates the battlefield?”
Fang Shu: “…”
Fang Shu knew which one she was talking about. It was an ancient yuri comic. Female Lead One was a general, and Female Lead Two was a talented young lady. The two had known each other since childhood, and after growing up, they gradually fell in love. Female Lead One led troops and guarded the frontier all year round. Whenever news of victory reached the capital, Female Lead Two would write a poem, which many scholars in the capital would sing and spread.
Fang Shu remembered that this comic was quite heartwarming. Although the plot was somewhat idealistic, well, it was fiction. If it was too tragic, Fang Shu might have dropped it.
In the story, after the two female leads grew up, they rarely saw each other again, but they kept exchanging letters. The poems Female Lead Two wrote would also eventually reach the frontier and be carefully treasured by Female Lead One.
At the end of the story, Female Lead One did not return to the capital from the frontier until she was forty. She took off her armor and retired to the countryside, while Female Lead Two had waited for her all along. In the end, the two of them held hands and spent the rest of their lives together.
When Fang Shu finished reading it back then, she could not describe what she felt. She was touched, of course, but when she thought about how the two had separated at fifteen and only got together at forty, spending a full twenty-five years apart, she still could not help feeling a little hurt by it.
Fang Shu had not expected Ye Wanyin to read this one, so she could only test her by asking, “What did you feel after reading it?”
Ye Wanyin thought about it and almost wanted to say she had no particular feelings. But looking at Fang Shu’s faintly expectant gaze, she paused and changed her words.
“I think they must have lived quite happily.”
Fang Shu: “…”
Listen to that. What plain, unadorned nonsense.
In the end, Fang Shu was the first to speak. “You should remember that our relationship is different from before, right?”
She was very clear about Ye Wanyin’s goal. Although she did not understand the reason, since this was based on dating, she could not just let Ye Wanyin exercise her rights.
She had not deliberately found so many yuri novels, yuri comics, and yuri anime just to play soy sauce with Ye Wanyin.
“During the dating period, when it comes to studying, I can listen to you. But outside of studying, you have to follow my lead.”
Ye Wanyin sat upright and expressed agreement.
Fang Shu continued, “Let’s start with the most basic things. Dating, shopping, and watching movies—the old three-piece set. We watched a movie a few days ago. Tomorrow we have school, so next weekend, we’ll go to an amusement park.”
In the past, Fang Shu would not have needed to say anything; the other party would have invited her herself. Unfortunately, the person she was now facing was Ye Wanyin, who had come to date her with a purpose and had no romantic experience.
Fang Shu endured it.
She held it in.
Because she had learned a new term last night.
In yuri, there were tops and bottoms.
She absolutely could not be the bottom.
So, as the top, Fang Shu decided to occasionally be considerate of the other party.
As for Ye Wanyin, although she did not understand what the old three-piece set had to do with an amusement park, she still agreed readily.
After Ye Wanyin agreed to Fang Shu’s request, she discovered that Fang Shu’s energy had improved a lot compared to before. Even her efficiency in doing problems had increased quite a bit.
The next day, the two came to class together. Ye Wanyin had only just stepped through the door with her left foot when someone in the classroom suddenly pounced over.
“Brother Ye! Emergency help from the jianghu!!!”
Seeing that the person was about to pounce onto Ye Wanyin, Fang Shu narrowed her eyes and gave him a warning look. The person immediately made a turn and pounced onto the boy sitting in the first row by the door instead.
He almost knocked the person sitting on the chair to the floor.
Looking at the scene before her, Ye Wanyin thought with relief: Good thing Meng Meng usually came later in the morning.
After being scolded by the boy in the first row, Li Ming finally stood up, pressed his palms together, and pleaded with Ye Wanyin across the desks.
“Brother Ye, have you finished the math homework? I went crazy during the holiday and didn’t have time to look at it at all. If Old Ban checks the homework and catches me, I’m done for!”
By this time, more people had gathered around Ye Wanyin. Everyone looked at her expectantly, hoping she could conveniently save the entire class.
Ye Wanyin: “…”
Fang Shu blocked Ye Wanyin behind her and said to them, “The college entrance exam is coming soon. Have some ambition. Don’t always think about copying answers. After the homeroom teacher finishes checking, you’ll have plenty of time to write it yourselves.”
Everyone: “…”
Li Ming fake-cried. “Sister Fang, you can’t be this cruel!”
Fang Shu ignored him completely. “I just will.”
Then she pulled Ye Wanyin inside. Seeing this, the others also retreated one after another.
Ye Wanyin looked back hesitantly, then sighed.
“Next time, just refuse them directly. You don’t need to spoil them,” Fang Shu said to Ye Wanyin.
Ye Wanyin nodded for a moment, then shook her head, saying somewhat contradictorily, “Actually, letting them copy seems fine too. That way, they won’t have to stand as punishment.”
Fang Shu tapped on her phone. “You’re overthinking it. When the homeroom teacher sees the homework, she’ll only punish you along with them. They don’t even change a single word when copying homework. With your accuracy rate, only an idiot wouldn’t be able to tell they copied.”
Ye Wanyin was somewhat surprised. “Then why did they still…”
“They’re teasing you. But they probably really didn’t finish the questions. It’s called trying anything when desperate.”
And so, during the first class, all the people in the back rows who had not done their homework were called to the back to stand.
Fang Shu went too.
Originally, during the holiday, while Ye Wanyin was teaching Fang Shu the basic knowledge points, she had also taught her how to finish the homework.
After all, homework had to be handed in.
And so, when the homeroom teacher looked at Fang Shu’s math homework, which had all the answers correct, she did not even think before pulling Fang Shu out to stand.
Li Ming had come out earlier than Fang Shu. Seeing her, he could not help shaking his head and letting out a long sigh.
“Sister Fang, you were foolish!”
Fang Shu: “…”
