After Becoming the Love-Brained Female Lead’s Best Friend - Chapter 28
On Friday, the homeroom teacher was standing at the podium talking about the Dragon Boat Festival holiday. Ye Wanyin watched Fang Shu absentmindedly spin her pen, seemingly not listening to a single word.
Fang Shu had barely spoken to her these past two days. After breaking free from the shackles of homework, she had completely let herself go. Ye Wanyin saw her spin her pen for a while, then, seeing that the homeroom teacher on the podium still looked ready to ramble on for ages, simply reached into her drawer and took out her phone.
Someone from the back seat threw over a paper note. However, it was not aimed accurately and landed on Ye Wanyin’s desk instead. Ye Wanyin subconsciously turned her head and saw Li Ming signaling at her, asking her to help pass it to Fang Shu.
Ye Wanyin placed the note on Fang Shu’s desk.
Fang Shu was playing a game when she suddenly saw a familiar hand enter her field of vision. For some inexplicable reason, her heart skipped half a beat. Then she opened the note. Inside was Li Ming’s dog-crawl handwriting: “Sister Fang, I’m about to lose this game. Save me!!!”
Fang Shu: “…”
Fang Shu’s heart returned to calm.
Before long, Fang Shu’s back was poked. It was something blunt and square. Fang Shu took it and looked at the game interface on the phone screen, falling silent for a while.
In the end, she still helped him play.
Ye Wanyin watched her hold the phone with both hands, her fingertips moving and tapping flexibly across the screen, while silently taking notes at the side. Although she did not know whether Fang Shu would be able to use them, it was still better than Fang Shu wanting them later and not having them.
When class was almost over, Fang Shu handed the phone back to Li Ming from under the desk. Li Ming looked at the shining golden record on the screen and happily sent Fang Shu a message: “Thank you, Sister Fang!”
Fang Shu did not reply.
Li Ming had long since gotten used to it. Fang Shu had set all her chat apps to Do Not Disturb. Unless she took the initiative to check her messages, it was difficult for anyone looking for her to get a response.
Otherwise, Li Ming would not have asked Ye Wanyin to pass a paper note.
After class, Ye Wanyin asked Fang Shu, “Are you going home for the Dragon Boat Festival?”
Ye Wanyin’s family did not pay much attention to May Day, but they did place great importance on traditional holidays like Dragon Boat Festival and Mid-Autumn Festival. They always felt that on these holidays, the whole family should reunite.
Fang Shu paused, then said, “We’ll see.”
That evening, the two rarely went home together. On the way, Fang Shu went to buy two cups of milk tea. Because Ye Wanyin had already said beforehand that she would not drink any, both cups were bought for Fang Shu herself.
On the way back, Ye Wanyin stared at her hesitantly for a while. In the end, she still took back the mood-spoiling words she wanted to say and went upstairs with her.
When they arrived home, Ye Wanyin asked Fang Shu, “What do you want to eat?”
Fang Shu placed the milk tea on the table, then picked up her phone. “I’ll order takeout.”
Ye Wanyin watched her open the delivery app, scroll up and down, and finally choose what she wanted to eat and place the order directly. Ye Wanyin could only make herself a simple dinner.
After dinner, Fang Shu sipped the remaining cup of milk tea. Ye Wanyin finished cleaning the dishes and stood in place in the living room for a while, as if she suddenly did not know what to do. After quite some time, she finally remembered that she had not finished working through her question bank.
Fang Shu sat cross-legged on the sofa. First, she watched videos for a while, but soon grew tired of them. She casually flipped through her apps and eventually entered QQ’s chat interface, where the entire screen was red with unread messages.
Fang Shu did not read a single one. She directly tapped into Li Ming’s chat and messaged him: “Playing games? Count me in.”
After a while, Li Ming replied to her: “! Sister Fang! Wait for me to finish this round. I’ll pull you in.”
Fang Shu told him not to hurry, since she had not downloaded it yet anyway.
Li Ming sent over several ellipses, then frantically told her to go download it.
The game took up quite a lot of memory. Fang Shu took a good while to download it. As soon as it was done, Li Ming sent her a team invitation. Fang Shu tapped in and discovered that the game still needed to download data.
Li Ming poked her. “Sister Fang, about how much longer do you need?”
Fang Shu was rarely patient. “Probably a dozen minutes or so.”
Li Ming sent her a crying emoji.
Fang Shu simply told him to start a round first. By the time she finished downloading, his side should also be done.
However, who knew what was going on? As soon as the other side went to play a match, Fang Shu’s internet speed seemed to get electrified. It shot up wildly, and the download finished in just a few minutes.
Then she looked at Li Ming’s side.
Three minutes into the game.
Fang Shu: “…”
Suddenly, she did not want to play anymore.
She looked around. Everything around her was the same familiar scenery she was used to seeing. There was nothing interesting to look at. In the end, her gaze landed on Ye Wanyin.
“Ye. Wan. Yin.”
Ye Wanyin instantly raised her head and looked at her.
Fang Shu watched Ye Wanyin adjust her glasses somewhat helplessly and calmly asked, “Ye Wanyin, is that your real name?”
Ye Wanyin nodded. “My dad gave it to me. I heard from them that he found it by flipping through the dictionary.”
Fang Shu held her phone in her hand, her fingertips rubbing against the edge of the phone case. She chatted with Ye Wanyin in a casual manner. “When did you come here?”
Ye Wanyin answered, “Probably around the beginning of April.”
No punishment fell on her.
Ye Wanyin guessed that, without actively exposing it, now that Fang Shu had already guessed everything, saying a little should not count.
Thinking this, Ye Wanyin suddenly stopped panicking.
Fang Shu, sitting on the sofa, immediately guessed which day she was talking about. No wonder when Ye Wanyin came back that day, Fang Shu had felt that she seemed much more vivid and alive than the impression in her memories. It was simply because the memories were fake, and the person who had suddenly appeared then was the real one.
Ye Wanyin hesitated for a while and was just about to take the initiative to confess to Fang Shu when Fang Shu’s phone suddenly rang. It was Li Ming, who, seeing that she had not replied for so long, had directly sent a voice call.
“Sister Fang, has your game finished downloading? We’re all waiting for you.”
Fang Shu entered the game. “Pull me in.”
Seeing the team invitation, she accepted it.
Ye Wanyin watched her for a few moments, then quietly went back to working through her questions without disturbing her.
Fang Shu was the last one to enter, so unsurprisingly, she was assigned to the fifth slot. The fourth slot was a random teammate brought in through recruitment. Li Ming shouted in the team voice, “Sister Fang, what are you playing?”
When Fang Shu played games, she had technical skill, but no game sense. Anything that required thinking was out of the question, while anything that required mechanics, she could show off like crazy.
So when she played these kinds of games, she often fell into one extreme: she got more and more kills, while the match record grew redder and redder.
Seeing that the fourth player had preselected jungle, Fang Shu preselected a mage. While giving Fang Shu the position, Li Ming howled into the microphone, “Sister Fang, remember to come support me anytime!”
Fang Shu ignored him.
At the start of the game, Fang Shu pressed the enemy mage under the tower so hard they could not come out. She even dove the tower and killed them twice.
After that, her economy rolled upward like a snowball. Whoever she saw, she killed instantly. In the mid-to-late game, the support simply came to follow her. Fang Shu, who had absolutely no game sense, took the support along to destroy heaven and earth, and finally died after being gang-beaten by the enemy team.
When she looked back, their base was gone.
Fang Shu said disdainfully, “You guys are so bad.”
Li Ming looked at his 2-8 record and secretly coughed blood. “Sister Fang, could you at least look at my lonely development lane? My survival environment was really difficult!”
After returning to the team room, Li Ming instantly started matchmaking. Fang Shu instantly canceled matchmaking, then, under Li Ming’s confused gaze, canceled ready. “I’m getting off.”
Li Ming: “???”
Li Ming tried to stop her. “Sister Fang, you can’t drop my stars and run! At least carry me up a few points!”
Fang Shu only replied with one sentence: “Uninstalled the game.”
After that, she instantly left the room.
Ignoring Li Ming’s QQ bombing, Fang Shu put away her phone and prepared to return to her room to wash up.
When she stood up, Ye Wanyin happened to also be getting ready to return to her room to sleep. The two of them unexpectedly stood up at the same time. The sofa and the living room table happened to be angled toward each other, so once they stood up, their gazes inevitably met.
Fang Shu felt that she should say something, so she forced out a topic. “The day after tomorrow is Dragon Boat Festival. If your family doesn’t see you there, will they worry about you?”
Ye Wanyin replied, “The flow of time in this world is still compared to my world. Over at my house… when I go back, it should be almost Dragon Boat Festival there too.”
Fang Shu gave an “oh,” then asked a useless question. “When you came here, did you miss your family?”
Ye Wanyin did not seem to think this question was useless at all. Instead, she seriously said, “Maybe. A little.”
Fang Shu nodded, then comforted her. “It’s fine. You’ll be able to see them very soon.”
Ye Wanyin gave a hum.
The two of them had nothing else to say. Fang Shu simply turned around and went back to her bedroom.
When she threw herself onto the bed, Fang Shu’s mind was still a mess. It was not that she had deliberately ignored Ye Wanyin these past two days. It was just that after finding out Ye Wanyin was not from this world, Fang Shu suddenly did not know how to get along with her.
The “familiar” person in her memories had suddenly turned into a stranger of unknown origin, and Fang Shu’s entire mind had become a tangled mess.
She discovered that sometimes, she still could not keep herself from getting tangled up in everything. With something like this, forget facing it calmly—she had twisted herself into a pretzel.
She still had not thought it through.
After rolling around on the bed in conflicted frustration for a while, Fang Shu got out of bed and began rummaging through her bookcase. She found every novel related to other worlds, transmigration, systems… and so on.
Then she opened her phone and created a new category, saving all the novels, comics, and anime she had collected that were related to transmigration and the like into that folder.
Finally, she lay on the bed hugging the books and her phone.
She needed to figure it out herself first before she could know how to get along with Ye Wanyin for the next three months.
