After Becoming the Love-Brained Female Lead’s Best Friend - Chapter 29
The next day, Ye Wanyin waited in the living room until noon, but still did not see Fang Shu come out. Seeing that if Fang Shu did not come out soon, the food would go cold, Ye Wanyin simply went to Fang Shu’s bedroom door to call her.
She knocked three times first. There was no response from inside.
She knocked a few more times with more force, but there was still not the slightest movement from inside.
Ye Wanyin stood at the door and hesitated for a while. Then she took her phone from the living room and sent Fang Shu a message.
Very quickly, ten minutes passed, and there was still no movement from Fang Shu’s side. As Ye Wanyin thought through all kinds of possibilities in her mind, she hesitantly called Fang Shu.
“Beep—”
“Beep—”
…
“Sorry, the number you have dialed—”
Ye Wanyin hung up. This time, she did not hesitate anymore and directly opened Fang Shu’s bedroom door.
Inside the room, it was surprisingly dim. On the bed surrounded by darkness, Fang Shu had curled herself entirely into the blanket, with not even a strand of hair visible.
When Ye Wanyin had come in before, Fang Shu had either already gotten up or had just fallen asleep. This was the first time she had seen Fang Shu sleeping so deeply.
Worried that Fang Shu might be sick, Ye Wanyin grabbed the blanket and slowly opened a small gap.
The first thing that entered her view was a sky-blue sleep mask. Seeing that the mask covered almost half of Fang Shu’s face, Ye Wanyin only then realized that Fang Shu’s face was actually this small.
Ye Wanyin forced herself to look away, then placed her hand on Fang Shu’s forehead. Perhaps because Fang Shu had been buried under the covers for too long, her forehead was warm, but still far from feverish.
Ye Wanyin softly called her a few more times. Seeing that Fang Shu not only did not respond, but even seemed to sniff because half her head was exposed to the air and then raised her hand to pull the blanket back down, Ye Wanyin watched her unconsciously wrap herself up properly again.
After confirming that Fang Shu was not sick and was probably just too sleepy, Ye Wanyin withdrew from her room.
Fang Shu slept all the way until almost dinnertime before coming out of her room with a yawn. Ye Wanyin saw the dark circles under her eyes at once. They were so heavy it looked as if someone had beaten her up.
Ye Wanyin paused in the middle of washing vegetables and hesitated. “What time did you sleep last night?”
Fang Shu collapsed onto the sofa, her whole body like a female ghost whose vitality had been sucked dry. She did not hide it from her either. “Eight in the morning.”
Ye Wanyin’s eyes widened slightly. “…That doesn’t count as early morning anymore, does it…”
Fang Shu did not answer her. She buried herself in the sofa, looking as if she was about to sleep again.
Ye Wanyin boiled two eggs for her, wiped them clean, and handed them to her. “Use these to rub your eyes. Your eyes must feel pretty uncomfortable, right?”
Fang Shu hesitated for a moment, then still took them. She lay flat on the sofa, holding one egg in each hand and slowly rolling them over her eyes.
Ye Wanyin asked her, “You probably won’t order takeout tonight, right?”
Fang Shu lay there limply. “I didn’t take my phone out.”
During dinner, Fang Shu vaguely heard her phone ringing. She paused, listened carefully, then asked Ye Wanyin, “Is my phone ringing?”
Ye Wanyin also stopped eating and listened along. “I think so.”
Fang Shu went over to answer the phone with her chopsticks still in her hand. She took the call in her room, and it was quite a while before she came back holding her phone.
Ye Wanyin watched as Fang Shu held the chopsticks between her fingers with one hand and her phone with the other, her free fingertips quickly typing on the screen. She moved one step at a time, stopping between each step. When she reached the dining table, she still finished typing the message and sent it before finally sitting down.
After Fang Shu sat, Ye Wanyin watched her quietly eat her meal.
After a while, Fang Shu took the initiative to cue her. “I’m going back tomorrow.”
Ye Wanyin gave an “oh.”
Fang Shu asked her, “Do you want to come back with me?”
Ye Wanyin was somewhat overwhelmed by the favor. “Me?”
Fang Shu nodded. “You’re leaving anyway. You might as well take the chance to have more fun.”
Ye Wanyin was a little hesitant. “Wouldn’t that disturb your family?”
Fang Shu’s phone on the table vibrated. She casually replied to a message, then held her phone and said to Ye Wanyin, “No. If you’re going, I’ll let them know.”
Ye Wanyin did not refuse after that.
Fang Shu sent a few messages to the person on the other end. Then Ye Wanyin saw her phone ring. It seemed the person on the other side had called her. Fang Shu went back to her room to answer.
The next day was the weekend. Fang Shu meant for them to leave a day early. By the time they arrived, it would probably be afternoon. They would rest for one night, have lunch the next day, then come back. So she urged Ye Wanyin to pack her things.
Ye Wanyin did not have much to pack. On the other hand, even though Fang Shu was only going back for one night, she still brought quite a few bags and bundles.
Ye Wanyin watched as Fang Shu stuffed clothes and comics into her suitcase, and that still was not enough. She even planned to stuff in all kinds of snacks and gifts. Ye Wanyin suddenly remembered, “Should I bring something too?”
Fang Shu zipped up the suitcase and said casually, “Up to you. Bring something or don’t. My family doesn’t care much about that kind of thing.”
Still, Ye Wanyin felt it was more polite, so on the way out to wait for the car, she bought some fruit nearby. Thinking of the snacks Fang Shu had brought, she guessed there were probably children in Fang Shu’s family too.
When she returned to Fang Shu’s side, Fang Shu saw her carrying several bags and gave her some space in her suitcase. While they were waiting for the car, Fang Shu suddenly asked, “Did you exchange your money through the system?”
Ye Wanyin looked at her, her expression very blank, as if more than a dozen question marks had appeared above her head.
Fang Shu explained, “Some novels say that people who transmigrate into books don’t have to worry about money. Doing missions can earn points, and one point can be exchanged for a large amount of money. Is that true?”
Ye Wanyin said, “I’m not too sure about other systems, but with the system on my side, points can only be obtained after completing the mission. I’m not sure exactly how many points I’d get, but the points…”
When she had glanced at it back then, she had not seen anything with fewer than six zeros.
Fang Shu gave a soft hiss, then said, “Then…”
Then she asked again, “Has your mission already been completed?”
Ye Wanyin shook her head. “No. Their system side seems to have rules. The system that pulled me in violated the rules by sending me here, so I filed a complaint against it.”
Fang Shu gave an “oh,” then suddenly looked toward Ye Wanyin. Her already large eyes widened like bronze bells. “What did you say?”
Ye Wanyin could not say it again. The car had arrived, and with a driver sitting in front, Ye Wanyin did not feel it was appropriate to talk to Fang Shu about such a surreal topic.
Ye Wanyin saw Fang Shu tap on her phone a few times, and then her own phone vibrated in her pocket. Ye Wanyin took out her phone and saw that Fang Shu had sent her a message.
[Fang Shu: Did you just say you filed a complaint against the system?]
[Ye Wanyin: Mm.]
[Fang Shu: !]
[Fang Shu: Shocked cat.jpg]
After that, Ye Wanyin watched with her own eyes as Fang Shu, who was sitting beside her with an expressionless face the whole time, typed at lightning speed in the chat interface and flooded the screen with stickers.
Ye Wanyin sent her a message to explain: Because it violated the rules, that’s why I complained about it.
[Fang Shu: I’ve read countless novels, but I really haven’t seen one where someone complains about the system.]
[Fang Shu: Aren’t systems supposed to be golden fingers?]
[Ye Wanyin: I don’t know. I never used it.]
[Fang Shu: Right, are you a transmigrator or a book transmigrator?]
[Fang Shu: If answering these questions will get you punished, you don’t have to answer.]
[Ye Wanyin: I should count as a book transmigrator, I think? But the book the system gave me seems to be pirated.]
[Fang Shu: Let me hear it.]
[Ye Wanyin: It said that you…]
Ye Wanyin typed slowly, but she also wanted to finish everything in one message. So Fang Shu waited for a very long time before she finally felt her phone vibrate. Ye Wanyin had sent her one long message.
Fang Shu did not have time to read it because the two of them had to get out of the car and enter the high-speed rail station. There were many people in the station, and Fang Shu was busy pushing the suitcase, checking tickets, and going through security. Only after they got on the high-speed train did she finally have time to read the message Ye Wanyin had sent.
Ye Wanyin had written a lot, but the central point of the story was actually only one thing: Fang Shu kept falling in love, kept getting dumped, and kept getting hurt again and again…
Fang Shu practically treated it like a completely new novel and read on with great interest. Then she reached the end.
Ye Wanyin said, “…After that, I didn’t read anymore, so I don’t know what the plot is.”
Fang Shu: “…”
It felt like someone had hung a piece of meat in front of her, tempted her with it, fully captured her attention, and then told her, “This meat isn’t for you to eat.”
…Her blood pressure rose.
[Fang Shu: Hurry up and read the rest of the plot.]
[Ye Wanyin: It’s pirated.]
[Fang Shu: If it were the official version, it would count as you spying on my private life. Since it’s pirated, I can still talk to you calmly here.]
Ye Wanyin had not expected that even after she no longer needed to complete the mission, she would still have to read the novel. Her fingers tapped over the virtual keyboard again and again. In the end, she deleted the words one by one and replaced them with one simple, aggrieved word.
[Ye Wanyin: Oh.]
After sitting for an hour, the two walked out of the high-speed rail station. Ye Wanyin saw Fang Shu head straight in a certain direction. After a while, a little girl with her hair tied into tiny pigtails rushed over and threw herself at Fang Shu, sweetly calling, “Big Sister, you haven’t come back in so long.”
Ye Wanyin carried her bag and followed behind, not knowing whether she should greet Fang Shu’s younger sister.
Fang Shu picked the little girl up and, with some difficulty, bounced her weight in her arms. Then she casually pinched her cheek. “You got heavier again.”
“Daddy said I have to eat more so I can grow tall, as tall as Big Sister.” As the little girl spoke, she gestured with her short arms. Her arms brushed against Fang Shu’s hair, and she was immediately attracted by the hair clip Fang Shu had pinned by her ear.
Fang Shu took off the hair clip and put it on her head, then said to her, “This is Big Sister’s friend. You can just call her Sister Ye.”
Then she turned to Ye Wanyin. “She’s my younger cousin, Cheng Cheng.”
Ye Wanyin nodded, then said to Cheng Cheng with a trace of nervousness, “Hello.”
Cheng Cheng looked at her in confusion, then hugged Fang Shu’s neck tightly.
Ye Wanyin felt slightly awkward. Fortunately, the adult who had come to pick them up arrived quickly. The other person strode over, looked at Cheng Cheng in Fang Shu’s arms, and knocked the little girl on the head. “I look away for one moment, and you run this fast!”
Then he looked at Fang Shu, his expression somewhat emotional. “Your aunt stewed bone soup for you. Remember to drink more when we get back. You’ve lost so much weight.”
Fang Shu freed one hand and pinched her own cheek, smiling faintly at her uncle Cheng Jing. “Actually, I’ve gained quite a bit during this time. She’s been feeding me well.”
Fang Shu pointed at Ye Wanyin. Only then did Cheng Jing notice the girl beside them. Although his niece had already told him before coming back that she would bring a friend, seeing her in person was still somewhat surprising.
He smiled at Ye Wanyin. “Thank you for taking care of our Shushu usually.”
Ye Wanyin hurriedly waved her hand. “She’s the one who usually takes care of me.”
Cheng Jing helped Ye Wanyin carry the luggage, then urged Fang Shu, “Let’s hurry back. Your aunt is already rushing us.”
