After Becoming the Love-Brained Female Lead’s Best Friend - Chapter 31
When Fang Shu came out of the bathroom, Ye Wanyin was still teaching the other students how to do questions. She probably found typing too slow, so she simply sent voice messages instead.
In the entire group, the only thing visible in the end was one voice message after another from her. The other students, to show that they were still there, would occasionally pop up and send an “oh, oh” sticker.
“When are you planning to shower?” Fang Shu casually smoothed her dried hair behind her and picked up the phone on the table, then flopped onto the bed.
“I’ll go after I finish explaining this question,” Ye Wanyin said, then tapped the voice recording again and sent another voice message.
Watching Ye Wanyin record while occasionally typing at the same time, Fang Shu pressed her lips together and, as if possessed, logged into QQ, which she rarely checked. The group chat messages had already exceeded a thousand. She really did not know why they had so much to talk about.
Looking at the long string of messages above, Fang Shu immediately lost interest in scrolling back. She watched Ye Wanyin send one message every minute or so. She did not tap them open, just watched like that. Then, taking advantage of the gap while Ye Wanyin was typing, she asked, “What’s the use of tutoring them now? You’re about to leave soon.”
Ye Wanyin’s typing paused. Then she said strangely, “It’s useful, right? I can use the few months before I leave to tutor them more. Maybe their grades can improve a little…”
At this point, Ye Wanyin glanced at Fang Shu, and her voice grew a little quieter. “Actually, if you’re willing to work hard, getting into university won’t be a problem for you either.”
Fang Shu lay on the bed. Because her phone showed she was online, those who were not studying in the group were crazily flooding her with messages. Fang Shu silently switched her QQ status to invisible. Watching the number of messages visibly drop, she said to Ye Wanyin, “There’s one thing I kept forgetting to ask you. After you leave, will we still remember you?”
Ye Wanyin had already finished explaining the last question and said goodbye to the people in the group, planning to go offline. Hearing Fang Shu’s words, Ye Wanyin froze. Her whole person went blank, clearly having never considered this question.
After a long time, Ye Wanyin looked at Fang Shu apologetically. “I don’t know either.”
Fang Shu nodded to show she understood, then urged her to go shower.
Only after Ye Wanyin went inside did Fang Shu look back at her phone. Last night, she had roughly flipped through dozens of novels and comics, covering all kinds of themes.
Thinking about the information she had learned from Ye Wanyin today, Fang Shu removed novels about transmigrating to other worlds from her favorites folder, then opened a new novel again.
For some reason, these days, she found herself unable to get into the romance novels she used to read often. So although she had read dozens last night, in reality, for most of them, she had only glanced at the beginning and ending before switching to the next one.
This one was about the same. Fang Shu finished the beginning, picked a few chapters in the middle that seemed a bit interesting, then jumped to the ending—the female lead stayed in the world inside the book and lived a shamelessly sweet life with the male lead.
Fang Shu was silent for a while, then exited the novel.
“Big Sister, I want to sleep with you tonight!”
Before Fang Shu could even climb off the bed, she saw the door being pushed open. Her little cousin, wearing pajamas, ran over with her short little legs going thump, thump, thump.
Fang Shu got down from the bed, just in time to catch Cheng Cheng as she threw herself into her arms. Not long after, Lin Qian followed her in. Seeing Cheng Cheng clinging to Fang Shu and refusing to leave, she sighed. “Chengzi wants to sleep with you. Give her to me, I’ll carry her back.”
Cheng Cheng hugged Fang Shu’s neck and refused to let go. “No! I want to sleep with Big Sister!”
“Don’t make trouble. After sleeping for a while, you’ll cry and want to come back again.” As Lin Qian spoke, she reached out to take Cheng Cheng from Fang Shu’s arms. But Cheng Cheng clung tightly to Fang Shu’s neck. The moment Lin Qian touched her arm, she started fake-crying.
Lin Qian began to feel a headache coming on.
Fang Shu also knew Cheng Cheng’s temperament. Although Cheng Cheng was very close to Fang Shu and would always make a fuss about sleeping with her whenever she came back, in reality, she was still closer to her mother. If she really stayed in Fang Shu’s room until the middle of the night, she would not be able to help crying, then would want to go back to her parents’ room.
Seeing Lin Qian’s expression, Fang Shu bounced Cheng Cheng upward, since she had started slipping down in her arms, then smiled at Lin Qian. “Let Cheng Cheng play here for a while. When she gets tired, I’ll send her back to you.”
“All right.” Lin Qian let out a breath of relief. Then she instructed Cheng Cheng, “You’re not allowed to bother your sister at night, hear me? If I hear you making trouble for your sister, watch how I deal with you.”
Cheng Cheng stuck her tongue out at her. She nearly got flicked on the forehead and quickly shrank her head back.
Lin Qian closed the door for them.
Seeing the footsteps at the door disappear, Cheng Cheng struggled out of Fang Shu’s arms and jumped down. Then she lifted her neck and asked Fang Shu, “Big Sister, do you want sunflower seeds? I can shell them for you.”
Looking at her little cousin’s obedient and cheerful appearance, Fang Shu carried her onto the bed. “No need. I already brushed my teeth. I don’t eat at night.”
Cheng Cheng said in a milky, regretful voice, “Okay.”
Fang Shu played cartoons for her in landscape mode, then sat beside her and watched with her.
When Ye Wanyin came out, she saw Fang Shu with one arm around Cheng Cheng and the other propping herself up. Her expression was still the usual laziness one could see all day, but her brows and eyes had visibly relaxed.
Seeing this scene, Ye Wanyin’s mood unconsciously improved a lot. She went over to the bed. The bed was very large, more than enough for two girls to sleep on.
Cheng Cheng was small and sat right in the center, so there was no sense of crowding at all. However, when she saw Ye Wanyin, she still shifted her little bottom a bit toward Fang Shu’s side, leaving space for her.
Fang Shu placed the phone more toward the middle so Ye Wanyin could also see the content on the screen—it was the cartoon they had watched on TV before dinner today. The plot had already progressed to a point Ye Wanyin could not understand, so Cheng Cheng must have watched the parts in between.
When Cheng Cheng watched cartoons, either her hands or feet were always unable to stay still. After Fang Shu refused to let her shell sunflower seeds, she began running here and there. First, she watched for a bit, then ran off the bed and dug out three bottles of milk, handing one to each of them.
Ye Wanyin and Fang Shu had both brushed their teeth, so they both set the milk aside. In the end, only Cheng Cheng drank hers happily.
After finishing it, she quietly watched the cartoon for a while. But she had not sat for long before she ran off the bed again to get snacks.
Fang Shu did not stop her. She only waited until Cheng Cheng returned, then picked up the snack bag she was carrying and asked, “Chengzi, didn’t you already brush your teeth? You’re still eating snacks?”
Cheng Cheng made an embarrassed funny face. “Don’t tell Mom, okay?”
Fang Shu sighed but still silently allowed it. Cheng Cheng was quite well-behaved. Most of the time, she was asking them whether they wanted to eat, and only occasionally would she eat a little herself.
Later, for Cheng Cheng’s convenience in getting on and off the bed, Fang Shu gave up her spot to her and squeezed a little closer toward Ye Wanyin, trying to give Cheng Cheng enough room so she could climb off the bed easily without falling to the floor.
Close to ten o’clock, Cheng Cheng ran out again. Fang Shu paused the cartoon, then waited for her to come back while scrolling through Weibo.
Ye Wanyin, meanwhile, started reading the pirated novel bought by the system. Because she was reading it directly in her mind, her expression as she leaned against the headboard now looked as if she were spacing out. Her entire gaze was extremely unfocused.
Fang Shu had originally been scrolling through Weibo, but at some point, her gaze was drawn to Ye Wanyin. Mainly because the other girl’s current expression looked a little—silly.
Especially when Ye Wanyin stared blankly at one spot and slowly furrowed her brows, looking troubled and unable to understand. It made her look even sillier.
Fang Shu stared at her for a while, watching Ye Wanyin’s brows knit tighter and tighter, as if she could not understand, could not accept, and could not process what she was reading. For a moment, Fang Shu actually found it rather interesting.
After who knew how long, Fang Shu’s phone vibrated. It was a message from her aunt.
“Chengzi is back in our room. You two should sleep early too. Don’t stay up too late.”
Fang Shu replied with an “okay” sticker, then continued looking at Ye Wanyin.
Ye Wanyin’s expression had already returned to clarity. She even adjusted her glasses, as if needing time to recover.
Fang Shu casually asked, “How is it?”
Ye Wanyin said, “The novel says that when you were in your third year of high school, you met a boy and fell in love at first sight. You gave everything for him, but he didn’t appreciate it at all. While stringing you along and dating you, he was also thinking about when to break up with you…”
Fang Shu listened to the story. When Ye Wanyin paused, she said, “Just call her the female lead. I don’t feel any sense of immersion with this novel’s female lead at all.”
After all, she was not someone who easily fell in love at first sight. What was more, according to Ye Wanyin’s description, the boy the book made her fall for at first sight even looked fairly ordinary.
Fang Shu’s first impression in dating was always based on looks. At the very least, they could not be too bad.
Thinking of this, she could not help glancing at Ye Wanyin again, then doubted herself.
Had someone put a curse on her?
Ye Wanyin noticed nothing and continued telling Fang Shu what she had read that night. Because Ye Wanyin read very slowly, Fang Shu found it strange when she suddenly stopped halfway through. Then Ye Wanyin smiled awkwardly. “I haven’t read the rest yet.”
Fang Shu: “…”
So, occasionally, she really did not like chasing ongoing series.
“By the way, isn’t Cheng Cheng sleeping here tonight?” Ye Wanyin only then realized Cheng Cheng had not come back for over an hour.
Fang Shu shrank her body into the blanket and nodded. “Mm. She went to sleep with her parents.”
Ye Wanyin gave an “oh” and also lay down. “Your little sister is very cute.”
Fang Shu nodded too. “She’s very well-behaved. My uncle and aunt taught her well.”
Ye Wanyin looked up at the ceiling and sighed. “I originally thought you were going back to your own home.”
“Aren’t you going home to reunite with your parents for Dragon Boat Festival?”
Fang Shu reached out and put her phone on the bedside table to charge. “There’ll always be a chance.”
Ye Wanyin gave an “oh,” then heard Fang Shu say, “I’m turning off the light?”
She replied, “Turn it off.”
Soon, the room fell into darkness.
They were both girls, so Lin Qian had prepared a relatively large blanket for them. When spread out, it could hang halfway down the side of the bed, more than enough to cover two people.
It was just that because they had made room for Cheng Cheng earlier, the two of them had already been rather close. Later, after Cheng Cheng was brought back to her parents’ bedroom, perhaps because of some inexplicable selfishness, Fang Shu did not move away. Instead, she simply lay down with the distance between them still close.
And so now, the two of them were pressed very close together under the blanket.
After a long while, Fang Shu suddenly heard a low hiss from beside her.
“You’re pressing on my hair.”
