After Becoming the Love-Brained Female Lead’s Best Friend - Chapter 30
Ye Wanyin got into the car Fang Shu’s uncle had driven over. Cheng Cheng was held by Fang Shu the whole time. Even after they got in the car, she still sat on Fang Shu’s lap, occasionally poking her head curiously out of Fang Shu’s arms to secretly glance at Ye Wanyin sitting beside them.
Ye Wanyin smiled at her. The little girl immediately panicked and burrowed into Fang Shu’s neck, burying her whole face there.
There was still some distance before they arrived home. As Cheng Jing drove, he asked Fang Shu about how she had been lately. Fang Shu answered him one by one, until he asked about her studies.
“I heard from your teacher that your monthly exam results improved this time. Work a little harder and getting into university won’t be a problem.”
Fang Shu played with her little cousin’s chubby hand and replied indifferently, “We’ll see.”
After that, they returned home without much conversation. Fang Shu’s aunt, Lin Qian, was a gentle-looking woman. She heard the sound of their car horn from inside the house, so she hurriedly wiped her hands casually on her apron and came out.
Fang Shu walked at the front while holding Cheng Cheng. Her suitcase was being carried by her uncle. Lin Qian stood at the door and first knocked Cheng Cheng on the head. “How old are you already? Why are you still making your sister carry you?”
Cheng Cheng stuck her tongue out at her, then hugged Fang Shu even tighter.
Lin Qian let them in and directed her husband to put the suitcase by the door first. Then she casually patted the nonexistent dust on the sofa and said to Fang Shu, “The food will be ready in a bit. You two play in the living room first.”
Then she said to Ye Wanyin, “You must be Shushu’s good friend, right? No need to be nervous here. If you need anything, just ask Shushu’s uncle to buy it.”
After saying that, she slipped back into the kitchen.
Fang Shu dug out all the snacks and handed them to Cheng Cheng one by one. Cheng Cheng was happy at first, but very quickly, she could no longer hold them all. Her eyes darted left and right, and in the end, she asked her dad to help her hold them.
Cheng Jing’s arms were stuffed full of the snacks his daughter had handed him. As he put them down, he said to Fang Shu, “Why did you bring so much? You should keep some for yourself.”
After Fang Shu finished clearing them out, seeing that Cheng Jing still looked as if he wanted to stuff the snacks back into her suitcase, she directly locked it and said to him, “I don’t eat snacks. They’re all for Cheng Cheng.”
Ye Wanyin also followed by taking the fruit out of her bag and placing it on the coffee table. Cheng Jing sighed and clicked his tongue. “Aiya, you already came, so why bring so many things? You girls really are…”
In the end, he still accepted everything properly.
Lin Qian could not hear what was happening in the living room from the kitchen. Halfway through cooking, she suddenly remembered something, poked her face out of the kitchen, and told Cheng Jing to turn on the TV so the girls would not be bored.
Cheng Jing turned on the LCD TV in the living room and handed the remote control to Fang Shu. “Here’s the remote. See if you and your friend want to watch anything.”
Fang Shu pressed the left and right buttons, scrolling back and forth on the TV. As she scrolled, she asked Ye Wanyin, “Is there anything you want to watch?”
Before Ye Wanyin could speak, Cheng Cheng, who had been sitting obediently in Fang Shu’s arms, suddenly seemed to see something. Hugging Fang Shu’s neck, she acted spoiled and said, “Big Sister, I want to watch that!”
Fang Shu looked at Ye Wanyin. Ye Wanyin was sitting upright on the sofa. Noticing Fang Shu’s gaze, she hurriedly said, “Anything is fine with me.”
And so Fang Shu played the cartoon Cheng Cheng wanted to watch.
When watching cartoons, Cheng Cheng clearly could not sit still. Before long, she wriggled out of Fang Shu’s arms, then thumped over to the back and dug out a large bag of sunflower seeds from the cabinet.
Cheng Cheng was small and not tall either. She stood on tiptoe and struggled hard, pulling the bagged sunflower seeds off the cabinet and onto the floor. Then she found a small bag nearby, scooped a small half-bag into it, and carried it back with quick little steps.
Cheng Cheng placed the sunflower seeds on the coffee table, then crouched in front of it and began carefully shelling them while watching cartoons.
She was not shelling the seeds for herself. She set out two small bowls, placing one seed on this side and one seed on that side. After she had shelled a small half-bowl, she stuffed one of the bowls into Fang Shu’s arms. Then she carefully looked at Ye Wanyin several times before, under Fang Shu’s “encouraging” gaze, firmly walking toward Ye Wanyin. After stuffing the bowl into her hands, she ran away.
Ye Wanyin: “?”
Fang Shu had already naturally eaten a small half of hers. Seeing Ye Wanyin look helplessly at the bowl in her arms, as if she was planning to give it back to Cheng Cheng so the girl could eat it herself, Fang Shu said to her, “Eat it. She just likes shelling sunflower seeds for people.”
Cheng Cheng shrank between Fang Shu’s legs, slowly poked out a pair of eyes toward Ye Wanyin, then nodded obediently.
Ye Wanyin ate a few seeds. Seeing that she had eaten them, Cheng Cheng stopped paying attention to her and continued diligently shelling her seeds. At the same time, she looked at the heroine in the cartoon and said to Fang Shu in a small, yearning voice, “Her little dress is so pretty.”
Fang Shu ate sunflower seeds in a rather “bold” way, grabbing them by small handfuls and tossing them into her mouth. Very soon, the seeds in the small bowl reached the bottom. She said to Cheng Cheng, “I’ll give you one on your birthday.”
Cheng Cheng cheered. Seeing that Fang Shu’s bowl was already empty, she stuffed the other small bowl she had saved up into Fang Shu’s hands. While handing it over, she quietly asked Fang Shu, “Big Sister, does Sister Ye not like eating sunflower seeds?”
As she spoke, she looked over with her eyes.
Ye—
Fang Shu pulled Cheng Cheng into her arms and said, “…”
Fang Shu did not deliberately lower her voice, so Ye Wanyin heard it clearly. Ye Wanyin, who was already a little nervous, now felt even stiffer.
Probably to entertain the guest, Lin Qian spent especially long preparing this meal. Cheng Cheng went from running between both sides after shelling sunflower seeds to simply acting spoiled in a small voice, asking Fang Shu and Ye Wanyin to sit together so it would be convenient for her to turn around and hand them seeds directly.
And so Fang Shu, who had originally been sitting on the long sofa, moved to the single sofa where Ye Wanyin was sitting. The single sofa was not particularly narrow. One person could sit there very spaciously, and two people could sit down without being too crowded. It was just that when their bodies sank into the soft sofa together, they inevitably drew closer.
Cheng Cheng was still a little shy around strangers, so she crouched beside Fang Shu’s legs. She shelled her sunflower seeds without realizing anything, her eyes glued to the TV.
As Fang Shu poured sunflower seeds into her mouth, she watched Ye Wanyin seriously follow Cheng Cheng in watching the cartoon. Suddenly, she felt a little dazed.
She unconsciously braced her left hand on the sofa. However, because the two of them had already shortened the distance between them due to the sofa sinking, when she braced herself, the sofa sank even further, directly pressing Ye Wanyin onto the back of her hand.
When Fang Shu felt an indescribably soft warmth coming from the back of her hand, she was a little stunned.
Beside her, Ye Wanyin thought something had poked her, so she reached out in confusion to grab it. Then, when she lowered her head, she saw that she was holding Fang Shu’s hand.
Both of them froze for an instant.
Although they had technically been lovers for over a month, if one counted carefully, aside from normal dates and Fang Shu scheming to have Ye Wanyin tutor her, there were very, very few intimate gestures between them as lovers.
If it had been before, Fang Shu probably would not have thought much about it and would have simply let it pass. But now, she suspected she was not very straight anymore.
Once that thought appeared, every intimate movement from the other girl seemed as if it had been sprinkled with ambiguous seeds, unscrupulously scratching an itch in her heart.
However, when she saw Ye Wanyin’s stunned and confused reaction, she suddenly calmed down again.
As for Ye Wanyin, she held Fang Shu’s hand and did not know whether she should let go. Fang Shu did not say anything either and simply let her hold it. In the end, the two of them silently held hands until right before dinner.
“Dinner’s ready—Chengzi, why are you still eating sunflower seeds? Didn’t we agree you shouldn’t eat snacks before meals?!” Lin Qian’s voice moved from the kitchen to the living room and finally reached their ears clearly.
Cheng Cheng raised her little hand to defend herself. “I didn’t eat any! I shelled them all for Big Sister!”
Lin Qian saw that Fang Shu really had a handful of sunflower seeds in her hand. If Fang Shu had been the only one holding some, she might have said a few words. But seeing that Ye Wanyin also had a small bowl of sunflower seeds in her hand, she simply skipped over the topic. “Eat first. Everyone, hurry and wash your hands.”
After dinner, everyone rested for a while. Fang Shu had originally wanted to take the initiative and help wash the dishes, but Lin Qian stopped her. Lin Qian asked Cheng Jing to help them put away their luggage.
Cheng Jing’s home was a standard three-bedroom apartment: one master bedroom, one second bedroom, and one study. The master bedroom was where Cheng Jing’s family of three stayed. The second bedroom usually had no one living in it and later became Fang Shu’s room. The study had nothing but books and a computer, usually used for work.
Cheng Jing placed the two girls’ suitcases inside. “Xiao Ye, can you share a room with Shushu tonight?”
Ye Wanyin nodded like a chick pecking rice.
Cheng Jing then said to Fang Shu, “Your aunt cleaned up your room last night. The sheets and blankets are all new. Sigh, you usually don’t come home to stay, so we don’t know if you’re missing anything. If there’s anything you need, remember to tell us so we can add it.”
Fang Shu nodded at him. “We can handle the rest ourselves. Uncle, you go ahead and do what you need to do.”
Cheng Jing reminded them several more times to remember to look for him if they needed anything, then left and closed the door behind him.
After taking out the snacks, Fang Shu’s suitcase visibly deflated. Aside from her pajamas, there was only one change of clothes left.
Ye Wanyin was about the same. Her bag was already visibly empty.
Fang Shu placed the clothes she would change into tomorrow by the head of the bed, then hugged her pajamas. “I’ll shower first?”
Ye Wanyin nodded, then looked around the room. Since they were only staying one night this time, she had not brought her question bank. She wandered idly around the room for a while, and finally sat by the bed and opened her phone.
She was not deeply attached to her phone. Before this, at home, she had only used it for the convenience of calling her family.
This time, as soon as she opened it, several messages popped up on QQ. They were all group messages.
A group of people were chatting enthusiastically about everything under the sun. The study rep howled in the group about how she completely did not know how to do a certain question. Ye Wanyin thought about it. She still remembered that question, so she sent a message in the group.
“That question…”
In the next second, a sticker flashed across the screen, directly pushing her message away. But it was quickly withdrawn, leaving only her message at the bottom.
For a moment, the group fell silent.
After a long while, the study rep finally sent a message in the group.
“Thank you, top student, for saving my dog life!”
[Ye Wanyin: You can ask me anytime if you have questions.]
[Meng Meng: Top student, I want to ask about question number… in math.]
[Zhang Heng: Top student, can you explain the physics question about… to me?]
…
Looking at the group chat drowned in a sea of questions, Li Ming privately messaged Zhang Xiao.
[Li Ming: Is this what our class group is supposed to look like?]
[Zhang Xiao: maybe not.]
