After I Woke Up to Find I Had a Wife - Chapter 2
“According to the laws of time, you should already be cremated. Therefore, there is no such thing as burying your body,” the System explained, opening a tiny spatial rift as it stared eye-to-eye with Lin You.
Seeing that Lin You remained silent, the System paused briefly. It snuck a glance at the deeply contemplative person, its mechanical blue eyes turning into wavy lines to break the awkward silence.
“Ahem, let me introduce myself. I am the Great Completion System, specifically designed to fulfill people’s deathbed wishes. Your final wish before dying was that you hadn’t gotten to see Fu Xinran go on her absolute rampage to destroy those scumbags, and you died full of resentment.”
“Sensing your intense willpower, I was drawn to you. The Main System selected you to be my host, to help you fulfill your wish.”
As for what the System stood to gain after completing the mission, it didn’t say. The Great Completion System merely brought out its long-rehearsed script.
It was absolutely not going to admit to its own operational error—the stubborn System was playing tsundere online. Exactly what kind of blunder had caused it to keep its mouth so tightly shut was a matter that would have to be uncovered much later.
Hearing the System speak without a single stutter, Lin You abruptly lifted her head. “Then what about the original owner? Doesn’t this count as me stealing someone else’s body?”
Although she utterly despised that scumbag Alpha, she couldn’t bring herself to inexplicably steal another person’s life.
“Aren’t you the original owner? I had you directly reincarnate over here,” the System questioned, completely bewildered. Could… could it be that she isn’t?
The System’s internal circuitry almost exploded again. Why were there bugs absolutely everywhere?
“Reincarnate? How is that possible? Last night I was still at home eating fried chicken and drinking beer, and today the moment I open my eyes I’m here. What kind of reincarnation lets me suddenly grow this…”
Lin You leaped out of bed, gesturing excitedly up and down. What kind of reincarnation was this fast? Did she eat super-growth pig feed?
“Huh?!” The System wagged its tail, its internal circuitry already tangled into a complete mess and on the verge of burning out. It began circling around Lin You repeatedly. “It does look a little large, huh…”
Lin You was speechless.
“Is ‘a little’ the right word here? Big brother, have you even graduated yet before coming out to guide a host?”
The System blinked its big mechanical blue eyes, not daring to answer. It could only deflect: “Well then, I’ll go back and look through the data again. Don’t blow your cover, okay? You’re familiar with the plot, right? I’m heading back first, you hold down the fort.”
Having blurted that out in a frantic rush, the System didn’t care whether Lin You actually knew the plot or not. It instantly transformed into a spark of lightning and disappeared with a sharp snap.
Lin You couldn’t even reach out in time to call it to a halt before the System bolted.
“Can you be just a little more reliable, big brother?”
Dejectedly dropping her hand, Lin You collapsed back onto the bed like a stranded fish, adopting a philosophy of “whatever happens, happens.”
After lying there for a while, she… actually grew quite curious about what she looked like now.
Standing in front of the mirror, Lin You patted the face that looked remarkably similar to her original one. She hadn’t expected that not only would their names be identical, but their faces would be pretty much the same too.
Lin You made various grotesque, ridiculous expressions in the mirror, rolling her eyes so hard she wouldn’t recognize herself.
The only differences were that her long hair had become short, and her feminine beauty had shifted into a handsome, dashing look.
Her thin eyebrows arched upward, her gaze sharp and spirited. Her refined, heroic facial features possessed a beauty that transcended gender. When she wasn’t speaking, she carried a cold, solitary nobility—it certainly fit her status well.
No wonder she could seduce so many young girls. The outer shell is indeed quite excellent, Lin You internal gave herself a beautiful round of compliments.
“Wait a minute. I remember the setting in the book is an Alpha. Does that mean I also have an extra piece of meat?” Suddenly remembering something, Lin You clapped both hands over her grey pajama pants.
The tactile sensation beneath her hands drove her to despair. There really was an extra piece of meat. In utter desperation, she asked, “Can it be surgically removed?”
The System, which was still diligently looking up data, felt its internal circuits flash upon hearing the host’s question, exploding like a firework. Ah, this is a question I can handle!
Opening a spatial rift, it poked its head out and blinked innocently. “Of course it can! According to Earth’s records, eunuchs are prone to urine leakage. Can you accept that? If you need…” The System paused. “I can personally perform the operation for you.”
Hearing the System’s eager, raring-to-go voice, Lin You waved her hand, completely devoid of the will to live. No, I cannot accept wearing adult diapers for the rest of my life.
She slumped weakly onto the bed.
Seeing that its host was unwilling, the System felt a bit disappointed. Failing to share its host’s burdens was its own fault. The System immediately zipped the rift shut, ignoring Lin You.
Lin You pondered over what she should do next to save her own skin. It was all the author’s fault for not finishing the story.
The author had only leisurely revealed a single sentence after seeing the readers’ boiling rage in the comments: The original owner and her precious white moonlight would eventually be shipped off to work in a mine.
Just thinking about this made Lin You shiver. She knew exactly how miserable people who worked in illegal black mines were.
Since none of it had happened yet, she had to treat Fu Xinran like the absolute palm of her hand. If Fu Xinran said go east, she would never go west. If Fu Xinran said catch a turtle, she would never catch a dragon. Survival was the top priority.
Meanwhile, in her room, Fu Xinran was gently stroking her stomach, feeling drowsy. She had no idea that her future life was about to undergo earth-shattering changes.
It would be full of both trials and tribulations, yet utterly thrilling and spectacular.
After messing around in her room for two or three hours, Lin You finally finished preparing herself mentally.
Supported by the plot knowledge and the fragmented pieces of the original owner’s memory organized by the System, she bravely stepped out of her room.
Mimicking the original owner’s nobility, she wore a pair of expensive gold-rimmed glasses on the bridge of her nose and threw on a simple, form-fitting white shirt. The original owner always liked to button her shirts all the way to the very top, presenting a perfectly rigid and old-fashioned appearance.
But Lin You wasn’t used to buttoning it like that—it was practically strangling her. She undid the top two buttons, revealing a ribbed tank top she had dug out of the closet underneath.
Her former long hair was completely gone. Feeling the messy bedhead on her crown…
It took Lin You an hour to finally tame it into a neat 9:1 side part, with her bangs sweeping to the right, exposing her left ear.
A dazzling sapphire stud earring deeply captured Lin You’s fancy, so she put it directly in her left ear. Her right ear was slightly covered by her hair, making it pointless whether she wore one there or not.
In the dining room, Auntie Gui, who was currently serving the dishes, froze when she saw her Master looking so wild and unconstrained. The child I watched grow up… she couldn’t possibly be planning to just completely let herself go, right?
The other servants also paused for a second upon seeing Lin You’s novel style of dress, but they immediately turned back to attend to their own tasks.
Auntie Gui had been taking care of the original owner since she was young. She always understood the child she raised very well, and figured the Master might still be having a dispute with the Mistress.
Sighing in her heart, she still stepped forward to offer earnest advice: “Youyou, the Mistress hasn’t come downstairs all day. You should go up and invite her down to eat. Right now, she is in a delicate and weak state. As the Alpha, you ought to be more accommodating and considerate.”
Lin You looked at Auntie Gui, who had cared for the original owner since childhood. Her face was gentle and amiable, and she was a bit plump. Lin You stiffened her posture and could only nod seriously. Having just stepped out of the elevator, she turned right around and went back inside.
Steadying herself so she wouldn’t blow her cover, Lin You assumed the original owner’s habitual cold nobility, standing perfectly straight inside the elevator. She felt as though she could see the words “a teachable child” written clearly in Auntie Gui’s eyes.
Ding. The elevator traveled all the way to the third floor. She took a deep breath. The elevator doors slid open, but she hesitated, unable to take the next step.
“Host, what are you hesitating for? Ahhh! The villain is right there!!!” the System shrieked inside Lin You’s head, flashing a bright red warning alarm.
The abrupt screaming made Lin You’s body sway. Utterly plagued by the noise, she reached up to press her temples. The timing happened to be just that perfect.
Fu Xinran happened to be standing right outside the elevator doors. Seeing Lin You’s body sway as she clutched her forehead, it looked as though the mere sight of her was an unbearable burden.
Her expression turned freezing cold, her beautiful face instantly covered in frost. The tenderness in her heart vanished in a flash, and she stepped into the elevator, treating Lin You as if she were completely invisible.
Lin You only had time to see the villain big BOSS’s long, straight legs step into the elevator before a wave of cold fragrance brushed past the tip of her nose. Lin You gripped the handrail tightly, slowly standing up straight, not daring to look at Fu Xinran.
The atmosphere was incredibly awkward. It was over, completely over. “System, get out here right now! What were you screaming in my head for? Now look what happened, Fu Xinran definitely thinks I’m disgusted by her again, ahhh…”
While her face remained entirely expressionless, Lin You’s internal self was practically bawling on the floor, hugging herself in helpless, sorrowful tears.
Knowing it had caused trouble, the System wagged its tail to cover its eyes, not daring to make another peep, returning to silent stealth mode.
This left Lin You entirely alone to face the freezing ice. The low atmospheric pressure beside her made her shudder, as if she were standing inside an ice locker.
Lin You swallowed hard quietly. Staying alive is truly so difficult.
The silence persisted all the way to the dining table. On the massive table sat five dishes and one soup, with only her, Fu Xinran, and Auntie Gui to eat.
Seeing Lin You and the Mistress walk out of the elevator together, Auntie Gui’s face filled with smiles. She happily served the soup right in front of Fu Xinran.
“Mistress, you must eat a bit more. Setting aside the child, you need to replenish your own body’s nutrition. Some people aren’t worth getting angry over; just leave them aside to cool off, and they’ll fall back in line.”
Auntie Gui spoke with clear hidden meaning. Lin You remained silent, pretending she didn’t catch any of the underlying metaphors. Fu Xinran smiled at Auntie Gui, melting away the layer of frost over her demeanor.
“Auntie Gui’s cooking is still the best. This soup is truly delicious. You should sit down and have some too,” Fu Xinran said in a gentle, soft voice, showing absolutely no trace of the icy coldness from moments ago.
Auntie Gui smiled even wider. She was incredibly satisfied with the Mistress—she was just like the old Matron. It was a pity the Matron hadn’t returned home in many years, otherwise Lin You wouldn’t have turned out the way she was now.
Looking at Lin You, who was solely focused on her own food and drink, Auntie Gui felt even more worried. Her wife was pregnant; couldn’t she say a few words to show some care and consideration?
“Youyou, since you happen to be resting today, take the Mistress to the hospital for a prenatal checkup. The child is only a little over a month old. Ask the doctor thoroughly if there’s anything she needs to supplement or be careful of, alright?”
Auntie Gui coaxed. Lin You, who was currently eating with immense joy and moving her chopsticks rapidly because the food was simply too delicious, almost broke character. She immediately sat up straight.
If she personally took the villain for a prenatal checkup, wouldn’t that reverse her favorability rating just a tiny bit? “System, System, hurry out. Is there such a thing as a favorability rating between the female lead and me?”
“Of course there is, ahem. But you can’t see it right now. I’m still updating. You’ll be able to see it in a couple of days,” the System said, sounding a bit guilty.
Lin You nodded. That’s more like it. “You should at least be somewhat reliable. After all, you’re the System, it’s not like I’m the one guiding you.” Lin You was also quite filled with despair; she felt like her System didn’t know how to do anything at all.
The System nodded in frantic agreement, promising guiltily: “I will definitely tutor myself properly to achieve the Great Completion ending as soon as possible!”
Lin You gave a noncommittal nod in her mind, completely missing the guilt in the System’s tone.
At the dining table, Lin You elegantly picked up a piece of food with her chopsticks before slowly nodding. “Okay.”
The deep, heavy female version of a low-baritone voice surprised even Lin You herself for a moment. Only now did she realize the original owner’s voice was actually so pleasant to the ear.
Fu Xinran, however, cast a startled glance over. Lin You, who usually couldn’t avoid her fast enough, had actually agreed to take her for a prenatal checkup.
A warm current surged in her heart. This awkward, stubborn person seemed to have made a direct promise regarding her for the very first time. Did this mean that a certain someone was finally no longer flinching away?
