After I Woke Up to Find I Had a Wife - Chapter 3
Inside the car, neither of them spoke. Both stared straight ahead, the atmosphere quiet and oppressive.
On the outside, Lin You was expressionless, but inside, she was panicking big time. Her grip on the steering wheel was so tight she was practically warping it out of shape—she had never felt this anxious even during her previous missions.
She never expected that one day, she would be thrown into such a chaotic flurry all because of a sudden, exceptionally gorgeous wife.
The primary reason, of course, was that this wife happened to be the villainous big BOSS—the kind that could easily end her life. At the thought of this, Lin You felt so melancholy she wanted to smoke a cigarette just to calm her nerves.
Right now, she was entirely relying on the gold-rimmed glasses perched on her nose—a style typically reserved for refined perverts—to barely mask the trepidation in her eyes.
“This atmosphere… if people knew, they’d think we’re going for a pregnancy checkup. If they didn’t, they’d think we’re on our way to dispose of a corpse,” Lin You murmured to herself, inhaling deeply. She wanted to clear her throat, but given the current tension, she could only suppress the itch in her vocal cords.
Fu Xinran, on the other hand, was quite relaxed. She leaned back gracefully and comfortably against the specialized car cushions and headrests for pregnant women that Auntie Gui had gone out of her way to purchase.
In fact, every vehicle in the household had been outfitted with them, save for the driver’s seat.
The person beside her had finally begun to take a step forward. No matter how small the stride, the dark clouds were finally parting to reveal the sun.
Seeing the GPS indicate that the hospital was just around the corner, Lin You felt a tiny spark of excitement in her heart. She would finally be able to escape this suffocating atmosphere.
In the past, if a top-tier beauty were sitting next to her, she would have found all sorts of ways to sneak glances from a 360-degree angle. Now, she only dared to steal a quick peek whenever she checked the rearview mirror.
On top of that, she had to maintain her character persona without blowing her cover. Her life was truly too difficult.
With the hospital a mere three to four hundred meters away, the System started acting up again.
“Oh! Host, please ensure the pregnant woman maintains a joyful mood. An oppressive state of mind, ah, will prevent the baby from feeling parental love. It will make her feel frightened and sad, raising the probability of the child being born with autism to eighty percent! Host, you must take this seriously.”
The System had somehow learned a cadence reminiscent of an old European noblewoman’s dramatic aria. Listening to it made a prominent vein throb on Lin You’s forehead.
Taking a deep breath, Lin You snapped back internally, a forehead full of black lines, “I don’t believe a word of your nonsense. She’s just an embryo right now, smaller than a pinky finger. Tell me, how exactly is she supposed to feel parental love?”
The System choked for words, then muttered: “Do you still want to save your own skin?”
Lin You’s heart stifled. The drive had been so quiet that she had momentarily forgotten—she still needed the villainous big BOSS to show mercy so she could survive. Lin You felt like letting out a groundhog screech.
Her life was truly too hard. Her teammate was utterly useless, constantly dragging her down, and the moment she arrived, she had to face a massive hurdle like a pregnancy checkup.
Her head throbbing, Lin You clutched her forehead. “I beg of you, the next time Auntie Gui watches Mole’s World, don’t crowd around it. My head hurts, and this is going to cause the mission to fail.”
The System let out a tsundere huff and went back into hiding.
This thing must be an underage System that snuck out early to manage a host, Lin You complained inwardly.
Nevertheless, the System’s sudden interruption did help ease Lin You’s tension a bit.
“Ahem. In a moment, I’ll go grab the queue ticket. You just wait for me in the car. There are too many people outside, and the air quality isn’t great.” Lin You measured her words with extreme care, cautiously reading Fu Xinran’s expression.
When Fu Xinran turned her head and fixed her gaze on Lin You’s face, Lin You’s breath caught for a split second. Fu Xinran noted her stiff posture and her shifting, uneasy eyes as she forced herself to speak.
Her mood instantly soured. Finding it utterly boring, she turned her head away with a dismissive “Mm” and closed her eyes to rest.
Lin You felt the abrupt shift in Fu Xinran’s attitude. It was so glaringly obvious, who wouldn’t feel it? She truly wanted to bury her head and weep.
But she could only stammer out, “Then… then take a short rest. I’ll go get the ticket.”
Lowering her head, she hurriedly tried to undo her seatbelt. But her palms had broken out in sweat at some point, causing her to press the button several times without releasing the buckle.
Hearing the commotion, Fu Xinran opened her eyes. With a face as cold as frost, she reached out with a crystal-clear finger—click—and the seatbelt binding Lin You snapped open.
Having pressed it, Fu Xinran turned her head right back, completely ignoring a certain someone who was currently so embarrassed her toes were practically clawing out a three-story villa.
Seeking advice on how to make friends with a villain. It’s quite urgent.
Lin You slunk out of the car door and gently closed it behind her.
This outing had been arranged in a rush by Auntie Gui, who only told them she had booked a specialist appointment, and that they just needed to retrieve the ticket from the automated machine at the hospital.
People were bustling to and fro inside the hospital—many expectant mothers and fathers, alongside a few small infants.
“Waaa… ahhh… waa-waa…” The piercing sound of a child crying caused many people to turn and look.
A completely overwhelmed, novice mother stood anxiously by the counter waiting to register, her expression haggard and exhausted.
Her clothes were half-hanging off her frame, and even the shoes on her feet were put on backward.
“Are you actually coming or not?! Ah?! Is this child even yours?! You do this every single time! Speak to me!” The novice mother, pinching a phone between her ear and shoulder, screamed in a total breakdown.
Though she drew the gaze of everyone around her, she was past the point of caring about embarrassment; she simply needed to vent.
Retrieving her queue ticket, Lin You stood to the side, staring blankly. The novice mother held her child, choking back tears as she loudly questioned her partner.
The baby continued to wail without stopping. Seeing this scene made Lin You’s heart ache; being a mother was truly too difficult for a woman.
She couldn’t let things continue like this. She needed to break the ice with Fu Xinran as soon as possible. Not just to save her own skin, but because a woman who was willing to bear her child despite not loving her deserved to be cherished and protected.
At that moment, she suddenly calmed down.
Mothers were truly great, and Fu Xinran was the most innocent party in all of this. Right now, there was still time; none of the tragedies had occurred yet.
As long as she could prevent them, once she resolved all the issues, she would divorce Fu Xinran, let her live a free and unconstrained life, and find her a high-quality partner. If Fu Xinran didn’t want the child, it didn’t matter; she could raise it herself.
In the future, she and Fu Xinran would be good sisters. Lin You clenched her fist. Mhm, her good sister’s happiness would be entirely resting on her shoulders.
Fu Xinran, who was still resting with her eyes closed in the car, had no idea she had suddenly gained a “good sister.”
Lin You took a brief walk around the hospital to locate the department. Seeing that there were still about seven or eight numbers ahead of them, she headed downstairs to fetch her.
“Ahem, um, Ranran.” Lin You desperately pumped herself up internally. The first step to drawing closer was to start with a nickname. Ranran was excellent—simple and easy to understand.
Hearing Lin You call her that, a flash of utter disbelief crossed Fu Xinran’s eyes.
She felt a tiny surge of excitement and a sudden urge to smile. This was a good start. A warm, radiant smile bloomed on her lips, nearly dazzling Lin You’s eyes.
Lin You licked her lips, her eyes staring unblinkingly at the beautifully smiling woman. So gorgeous.
As the two walked side-by-side, Lin You’s handsome and noble appearance had already drawn quite a bit of attention.
Some Omega expectant mothers and fathers even dragged their husbands or wives along, their eyes lighting up as if they had discovered a new continent, staring intently at the elegant and handsome Lin You.
This naturally drew furious glares from numerous Alphas and Betas.
With the two appearing together this time—Fu Xinran tall and slender, with black hair, snowy skin, red lips, and a frigid aura like an icy mountain peak…
An Omega and an Alpha completely monopolized everyone’s gaze. “Holy cow, this pair… they completely put celebrities to shame, and they barely have any makeup on.”
A young nurse prattled on excitedly to a female doctor beside her who was buried in her food.
Losing her patience, the female doctor swallowed her food, lifted her head, and cast a glance at Lin You and Fu Xinran’s retreating figures.
As the little nurse beside her kept chattering non-stop, the doctor’s gaze darkened. Reaching out with her right hand, she pinched the little nurse’s chin and gave it a twist, effectively shutting up the rambling mouth. Satisfied that it was finally quiet, the female doctor ignored the little nurse, whose face had turned as red as a monkey’s bottom, and went back to burying her face in her food.
“You’re terrible…” Shifting with embarrassment and anger, the little nurse gave her a playful swat before immediately putting on her face mask and leaving.
Lin You enviously pulled her gaze back. She had been shielding Fu Xinran from behind to keep people from bumping into her, and happened to witness the loving interaction between the cold, pretty doctor and her partner.
Though Lin You had never been in a relationship, it didn’t stop her from enjoying a sweet romance plot.
Fu Xinran noticed the person standing diagonally behind her. Lin You’s eyes were full of smiles as she stealthily watched a female doctor who was eating with her head down.
One look at the female doctor and it was obvious she was an Alpha. Fu Xinran looked up, only to see a faint smile playing on Lin You’s lips.
Her heart went completely cold. She suddenly remembered the rumors that Lin You had same-sex preferences, and that she was supposedly extremely repulsed by Omegas.
When she married into the family, Lin You had been incredibly cold. The two barely shared a room. If it hadn’t been for that recent accident, who would believe that after more than a year of marriage, the two hadn’t even stayed in the same room?
Fu Xinran’s eyes turned freezing cold. Abruptly reaching out, she grabbed Lin You’s clothes with a fierce tug.
Lin You, who had been busy sighing over sweet romances, was pulled around by the immense force. Meeting Fu Xinran’s eyes—which were cold enough to kill—she swallowed hard out of pure reflex.
With an expressionless face, Fu Xinran dragged her straight into the elevator. The people waiting nearby all instinctively took a few steps back to avoid getting caught in the crossfire.
What… what on earth happened? Lin You bent her body slightly to make it easier for Fu Xinran to pull her, her mind racing to figure out where she had offended her.
Fu Xinran was so angry she felt dizzy, her breathing growing rapid.
“Ranran, are you feeling unwell? Is it very bad?” Lin You immediately sensed Fu Xinran’s emotional instability. Anxiously stepping forward, she wrapped her arms around Fu Xinran’s body and asked, her eyes continuously checking the jumping numbers of the elevator floors.
“Let go.” Fu Xinran’s eyes grew hot. The warm embrace behind her felt scaldingly hot. She struggled firmly, trying to break free from Lin You’s arms.
Lin You didn’t dare use too much force, but seeing Fu Xinran looking so uncomfortable that the rims of her eyes were red, she bent down and scooped her up in a bridal carry, holding her securely in her arms.
The moment the elevator doors opened, she immediately dashed out.
Inside the elevator, a petite female Omega pinched her husband’s arm, her eyes practically dripping with envy.
The male Alpha could only coax her in a low voice, executing an identical bridal carry just to appease his young wife. Has pampering your wife rolled into such an intense level of competition nowadays? a Beta on the side lamented internally.
An anxious Lin You carried Fu Xinran, her expression stern and rigid as she shouted, “Make way, please make way!”
This intense momentum caused everyone to clear a path, assuming she was suffering from some catastrophic illness. A nurse at the station immediately stepped forward to ask if they needed help.
“We have a queue ticket, and it’s our turn now. My wife feels extremely unwell, sorry for the trouble.” Lin You rapidly handed the ticket to the nurse.
It happened to be their turn. Fu Xinran wrapped both arms tightly around Lin You’s neck, pressing her face against Lin You’s chest. Hearing the rapid, pounding heartbeat beneath her ear, she bit her lower lip slightly. Right now, she felt a mix of happiness and intense embarrassment.
Listening to Lin You’s anxious, worried tone, the discomfort in her heart faded just a fraction. This person is already inside my pot. If she still thinks about jumping out, I’ll definitely break her legs.
For some unknown reason, Lin You suddenly felt a phantom chill run down her spine. She could only tighten her embrace, holding the person in her arms a little closer.
