After I Woke Up to Find I Had a Wife - Chapter 4
It wasn’t until Lin You gently placed her onto the bed that Fu Xinran snapped out of her daze. Her facial expression remained as composed as usual, but the tips of her ears had already blushed a deep crimson, nearly dripping with blood.
The doctor had already leaned down to begin her examination.
“Where does it feel uncomfortable? Does it hurt here?” The female doctor was also an Omega, and her demeanor was rather stern.
Fu Xinran shook her head. “I just feel a little nauseous and want to throw up.” Having said that, she felt too embarrassed to face anyone and kept her eyes tightly shut.
Anxiously holding Fu Xinran’s hand, Lin You leaned her head down and softly comforted her, “Ranran, don’t be afraid. It’s alright, the doctor is right here. You’ll feel better in no time.”
The doctor gave her an annoyed roll of her eyes. When Lin You had rushed the woman inside in a bridal carry earlier, she had assumed something catastrophic had happened.
She had hurried over to perform the examination and bustled around, only to find that aside from her emotions being somewhat unstable, there wasn’t a single thing wrong with her.
“Doctor, how is she?” Lin You asked, her eyes wide with earnest worry.
The doctor on duty was in her late forties or fifties. She unhurriedly packed away her stethoscope and sat down to the side.
“The issue can be considered large or small. The expectant mother’s emotional fluctuations are exceptionally severe. This is detrimental to the baby’s development and can easily lead to a miscarriage,” the female doctor warned with a stern face, intentionally trying to startle them.
She had seen too many young couples get overly emotional, experiencing extreme grief or joy upon finding out they were pregnant. A child was incredibly delicate during the first three months, and the slightest lack of care could result in a miscarriage.
Judging by their dramatic entrance, she felt this young couple had a very high potential for running into that exact trouble.
“Then… does it have any lasting impact?” Lin You asked, her eyes blinking wide in anxiety. The grip she had on Fu Xinran’s hand inadvertently tightened a fraction. Fu Xinran opened her eyes and saw how nervous Lin You looked.
She gently squeezed Lin You’s hand back, but Lin You’s attention was entirely focused on the doctor, so she didn’t even notice.
Once the female doctor started speaking, it was a long paragraph of instructions: “…This includes proper rest, ensuring adequate sleep, maintaining a joyful mood, and paying attention to nutrition.”
“Because early pregnancy reactions often cause a loss of appetite during the initial stages, nutrition is certainly important, but you must choose food based on the mother’s appetite, understand?”
Some families might force an expectant mother to eat just to supplement nutrition when she was suffering from morning sickness and couldn’t keep food down. Doing so would produce the exact opposite effect and could even lead to many irreversible consequences.
Lin You whipped out her phone and conscientiously recorded every single point the doctor mentioned.
“Most importantly, during pregnancy, it is best for the Alpha to use their pheromones appropriately every day to soothe the expectant mother. This will properly alleviate the mother’s physical discomfort.”
Blushing slightly, Lin You noted it down and gave a tiny nod. Having read this book, she was still aware of the concept of the heat and pheromone tracking.
“However, do not overdo it and trigger the mother’s heat. Especially during the first three months, you must absolutely remember to abstain from intimacy. This is for the safety of both the child and the mother; you must not mess around blindly.” The female doctor seriously finished explaining all the precautions to the young female Alpha before her.
Both Lin You and Fu Xinran’s faces turned entirely red. Who would believe that a couple married for over a year were still so pure and innocent?
Rarely encountering an Alpha who would take notes so seriously, the female doctor nodded at Lin You with immense satisfaction.
“I hope to see you again at the next prenatal checkup,” the female doctor added with a hidden meaning. After all, most Alpha or Beta expectant fathers and mothers were swamped with a myriad of daily affairs.
It was as if they were the busiest people in the entire universe—so busy that they would squeeze in a split second to conceive a child and then vanish completely.
Lin You wrapped an arm around Fu Xinran’s waist as they stood at the door to thank the doctor. “Thank you so much, Doctor. See you next month.”
“Expectant mothers must remember to maintain a joyful mood!” Seeing that Fu Xinran wasn’t much of a talker, the female doctor intentionally emphasized it one more time.
Fu Xinran nodded with a flushed face. Right now, her attention was entirely captured by the hand resting on her waist and the warm body right behind her.
She felt a little lightheaded. Someone who used to actively avoid contact with her had suddenly taken the initiative; she felt a bit overwhelmed by the unexpected favor.
Even after they arrived back home, Fu Xinran still hadn’t fully processed it.
Seeing Fu Xinran’s dazed expression, Auntie Gui assumed there was some major problem and hurriedly stepped forward to support her.
“Mistress, do you feel unwell? We’re already home. Auntie Gui made some delicious food for you, would you like a bite?” Auntie Gui didn’t even look back at Lin You as she guided Fu Xinran straight into the house.
Lin You handed the car keys to the driver and followed closely behind Fu Xinran step-by-step.
Lin You’s mind was entirely consumed by the doctor’s words. As someone who had been single since birth for over twenty years, this was her first time encountering a pregnancy involving someone close to her.
Her heart was completely in a flutter, and she ran through all sorts of scenarios in her mind.
All the typical melodrama that appeared on television—miscarriages, vomiting, favoring boys over girls, saving the mother versus saving the child—she replayed the entire sequence in her head.
Speaking of which, in this book, she remembered that the little baby in Fu Xinran’s stomach was ultimately not saved. That was also one of the root causes of her blackening.
Hiss. Lin You inhaled sharply, frantically calling out in her mind, “System, System, is the original owner’s white moonlight about to return?”
The System leisurely wagged its tail, looping out from Lin You’s side, and immediately ran over to Fu Xinran’s side with a bright grin, curiously circling around her repeatedly.
Lin You complained expressionlessly, “Does the System have a dark-room containment feature? I think you need to go in there.”
“This is my first time witnessing a carbon-based lifeform’s pregnancy, I’m just curious!” The System tilted its head up, flying over to Lin You’re side to curry favor.
Lin You wore a look of total realization. “I knew it. You definitely haven’t graduated yet before coming out to guide a host.”
“That’s not important. The white moonlight is graduating with her doctorate in two months. Ah, which means there are less than three months left before you cause the baby to miscarry. You need to hurry up.” Having blurted that out, the System promptly went back into hiding.
“So it happens around the fourth or fifth month.” Lin You narrowed her eyes, her right fingers habitually rubbing against each other.
Holding a freshly made bowl of steamed egg custard, Auntie Gui stood beside Lin You and asked out of curiosity, “What happens around the fourth or fifth month?”
“Ah, it’s nothing. Is something the matter, Auntie Gui?”
“It’s nothing. Youyou, I wanted to ask for some time off to go to Anyang Temple to light a peace lantern for the Mistress and the baby. Do you think that’s alright?”
“Auntie Gui, you can take a break whenever you need to, but there’s no need to go light a lantern. Anyang Temple is halfway up the mountain and quite far away. I wouldn’t feel safe with you going alone. I’ll go personally to pray for it when I have time later.” Lin You answered safely based on the description of Anyang Temple provided by the System.
Auntie Gui thought about it and realized she had a point. She cheerfully handed the steamed egg custard to Lin You and went back to researching her prenatal meal plans.
Auntie Gui had raised Lin You since childhood. Currently, all the household affairs, large and small, were managed by Fu Xinran with Auntie Gui’s assistance. She was essentially Lin You’s butler.
Fu Xinran rested for a while and finally gathered her thoughts.
Was the Lin You today truly Lin You?
Fu Xinran placed her hand on her stomach, a trace of bewilderment in her eyes.
Auntie Gui had privately told her that once an Alpha had a child, their sense of responsibility would shift immediately, and they would mature.
Fu Xinran naturally knew Auntie Gui was just trying to comfort her; after all, she wasn’t an innocent, naive, and silly sweet girl.
Yet, a tiny glimmer of hope remained in her heart.
“President Lin, the Planning Department has submitted their proposal. Do you need me to bring it over to you?” Lin You picked up the phone, and the voice of the original owner’s assistant came from the other end.
The original owner had five assistants in total: one personal assistant for lifestyle needs and four assistants to coordinate work. The one calling now was a work assistant.
Lin You paused for a moment, searching her brain for memories.
The original owner seemed to have acquired a shopping mall recently and was planning to reorganize the surrounding resources, linking it with other malls operated by their own family to launch a perfect advertising campaign.
Originally, an insignificant matter like this wouldn’t require her personal attention. However, the person taking charge of this proposal this time happened to be the original owner’s younger cousin.
To prevent her younger cousin—who only knew how to get into bed with people—from ruining the livelihoods of the subsidiary company’s employees, she could only spare a bit of energy to keep an eye on it.
“Alright, thank you for your hard work.” Lin You mimicked the original owner’s tone and cadence.
“It’s just my duty.”
Lin You rubbed her temples, sitting back in the study’s chair.
Organizing her thoughts from this single day… from early this morning, she discovered she was dead and might very well have already been cremated.
Then she found out her predecessor was a piece of trash, and she had a wife who could blacken at any moment and take her life, plus there was a baby in her stomach right now.
She felt a bit chaotic and needed some peace.
“System, when will you finish updating? A lot of descriptions in the original novel were just glossed over in a single sentence.”
“Furthermore, I’ve never done business before. It’s fine if you ask me to put on an act, but when it comes to commercial matters, I’m completely clueless.” Lin You threw her hands out, leaning back against the comfortable chair.
“Rest assured, Host. The Great Completion System will serve you with the utmost dedication!” The System immediately guaranteed.
“How?”
“The System can intercept the commercial decisions previously made by the original owner in the book. You just need to finalize things according to the original owner’s business decisions. The System will also automatically correct any erroneous decisions for you, ensuring the host has no worries about the future.”
Looking at the increasingly active System, Lin You realized this was the only viable path.
She needed to give herself some time to untangle everything. She still felt as though she were caught in a dream; everything that happened today felt far too surreal.
In her past life, she was merely a retired soldier. She had been retired for over half a year, resting and recovering from her injuries at home.
Her captain was actually planning to visit her tomorrow!
I probably won’t get to see the Captain and the others for the rest of my life, Lin You closed her eyes with a trace of melancholy.
Lin You had enlisted at eighteen and retired at twenty-four. After resting for a year, she was supposed to return to university to study.
But now… thinking about studying, the original owner was a top academic who had graduated with a master’s degree from Lanniss University, holding a double degree.
Meanwhile, she was just an extraordinarily ordinary high school graduate who hadn’t even attended university yet.
At this thought, the world before Lin You’s eyes turned completely black.
“Hello, Auntie Gui. I’m here to deliver a document to President Lin.” A respectful and polite Beta assistant stood to the side, waiting for Auntie Gui to lead the way.
Above the third floor of the villa, one could not gain access without a specialized card.
“Oh, young Sun! I haven’t seen you in quite a while. Is your health doing well?” Auntie Gui chatted with her while leading her upstairs.
The assistant, Sun, offered a plain smile. “My health is quite alright, thank you for asking, Auntie Gui. Is the Mistress not home today?”
“She’s here, the Mistress is resting.” Auntie Gui pressed the elevator button, sending the assistant up to the study.
Hearing a knock at the door, Lin You opened her eyes. “Come in.”
Meanwhile, Fu Xinran took a deep breath. She had decided to test Lin You. If Lin You acted exactly the same as before, she would withdraw all her hopes, give birth to the child in peace, and wait for the divorce.
She pulled back a corner of the blanket, placed a pillow down whose color was completely different from the pillow on the other side, and lay down on one side of the bed, evening out her breathing.
