After Marking the Omega Officer Who Was Pretending to Be an Alpha - Chapter 1
“Ding-ling—”
The instant Ji Fan heard the alarm in her sleep, she opened her eyes and sat up. After living and working like this day after day, this action had long since become a habit.
She was in a dark, cramped space.
Ji Fan suddenly noticed that the bed across from her was empty. Usually, at this time, the roommate in Bed No. 2 would still be sleeping. It was indeed a little strange that Roommate No. 2 was not there now, but she did not think too much about it. She simply got out of bed and changed clothes.
Her job followed a six-hour shift system. There were four beds and four people in the dormitory. Twenty-four hours a day, the four of them took turns rotating shifts. Roommate No. 3 had just finished her turn, so now it was Ji Fan’s turn.
Her job could be considered relatively easy.
The pay was also high.
It was just that…
She had not seen the outside world or the sun for five years.
—
Ten minutes later.
After washing up, Ji Fan put on her white uniform, mask, and work ID before heading to the elevator. Normally, on the way to the elevator at this time, she would run into Roommate No. 3 coming back from her shift. But today, unexpectedly, she did not meet her.
The unusual situations with Roommate No. 2 and Roommate No. 3 made Ji Fan feel slightly puzzled, but she could only wait until after work to ask the two of them what was going on. She entered the elevator, pressed P-3F, then pressed the button to close the doors.
The elevator doors slowly shut.
It descended.
Ji Fan worked at the underground experimental base of Pur Biotechnology Co., Ltd. The underground experimental base had five floors in total, but she was only ever allowed to move around P-1F, P-2F, and P-3F—the lowest three floors of the experimental base. That was because these three floors were unknown to the public and carried out many secret experiments that could not be revealed.
The elevator soon arrived at P-3F.
The doors opened.
Ji Fan stepped out of the elevator and entered the office area on P-3F. The office area was filled with small workrooms enclosed by glass walls. Through the glass walls, one could see that every workroom was packed with experimental equipment and test tubes. Documents were stacked in layers across the desks as well. Inside, staff members and researchers dressed in white uniforms like Ji Fan’s were working. Their main task was to analyze, compare, and study the information and data of the test subjects.
The air was filled with the strong smell of disinfectant.
Ji Fan passed through the office area and walked toward the Eastern A8 Experimental Zone of the underground experimental base. The underground experimental base had three areas in total: the eastern, western, and northern zones.
The Eastern A8 Experimental Zone was the area where she worked every day. She arrived before the mechanical door of the Eastern A8 Experimental Zone, picked up her work ID, and placed it over the sensor to clock in. After passing fingerprint recognition and a facial scan, she smoothly entered the Eastern A8 Experimental Zone.
Ahead of her was a clean, long corridor. The glaring incandescent lights overhead shone down on Ji Fan. With practiced ease, she walked forward a few steps, turned right, and entered the observation room of the A8 Experimental Zone.
The observation room was where the observers of each experimental zone monitored and recorded the data of each experimental subject. Every observer was assigned a corresponding test subject to be responsible for. The test subject’s data updated once every ten minutes.
Ji Fan was an observer at the underground experimental base of Pur Biotechnology Co., Ltd. She picked up the documents and went to the laboratory. She was only responsible for recording the test subject’s data. The first thing she did every day after starting work was go to the laboratory to check whether the test subject had any abnormalities. If there were no abnormalities, she would return to the observation area and use the instruments to monitor and record the test subject’s data.
She had already spent five years living days like this.
Ji Fan arrived at the laboratory door.
The sign on the laboratory door displayed—
Second-Generation Test Subject No. 16.
Ji Fan looked through the glass window on the door and glanced inside the laboratory. Apart from a machine used to record data, there was also a two-meter-long experimental table. Lying completely naked on the experimental table was Second-Generation Test Subject No. 16.
That one glance immediately made Ji Fan realize something was wrong.
The test subjects were not living people. Every test subject’s skin was pale and bloodless. But right now, the skin tone of the test subject lying on the experimental table seemed no different from that of a normal person. It even looked as if a living person were lying on the experimental table.
Ji Fan had recorded the data of Second-Generation Test Subject No. 16 for five years. There was no way she would not know the difference between a living person and a dead one. This current situation left her completely baffled.
Could it be… that the test subject had “come back to life”?
An ominous premonition suddenly burst forth in Ji Fan’s heart. Fortunately, the test subject’s four limbs were fixed to the experimental table, so she could go in and check the test subject’s condition with peace of mind.
With her head full of questions, she passed the fingerprint recognition and opened the laboratory door, then walked inside. The strong smell of disinfectant was a little choking. She slowly walked to the side of the experimental table and focused her eyes on it.
In an instant, she was so frightened that her face drained of color and cold sweat broke out all over her.
The person lying completely naked on the experimental table was actually her Roommate No. 3.
And Second-Generation Test Subject No. 16…
was gone!
Just then, the sudden sound of an alarm frightened the utterly panicked Ji Fan so badly that she rushed out in a flurry. At the same time, a broadcast rang out throughout the entire underground experimental base—
“An emergency incident has occurred in the Northern C3 and C4 Experimental Zones. Security personnel from all other areas, please proceed immediately to the Northern C3 and C4 Experimental Zones to provide support. All other personnel, please remain in your respective areas and do not panic. The order of the base will continue as usual…”
—
“Doctor! Dr. Mason!”
Inside the center of the experimental base, a terrified man shouted Dr. Mason’s name as he pushed open the door of the experimental center and ran inside.
“Dr. Mason!”
A middle-aged to elderly man in a white uniform stood ahead, looking down at the screen in front of him. The panicked man hurried over and said excitedly, “Dr. Mason, the northern experimental area can’t be saved anymore. We don’t know how the test subjects in the north suddenly escaped, but the northern zone is about to fall. We request that Dr. Mason close all passages to the northern zone! This is to prevent the other areas of the experimental base from being affected. Otherwise… the entire underground experimental base will be finished!”
The man was so frightened that even his voice was trembling.
Dr. Mason silently looked down at the images on the screen without saying anything. The man followed Dr. Mason’s gaze and looked down. Through the surveillance footage on the screen, he could clearly see that the northern experimental zone had already fallen into complete chaos. The people in the surveillance footage were frantically biting one another like lunatics. Some tried to escape, only to be pounced on and bitten to death alive by others.
Even through the screen, it was as if one could hear the screams. The walls and floors were covered everywhere in fresh red blood. The scene was terrifying and chaotic.
“Dr. Mason!” After seeing the footage, the man shouted anxiously. He could already imagine what the consequences would be if the entire underground experimental base fell. “We can’t wait any longer! The northern zone has already fallen! Those living dead are too terrifying, Doctor!”
After thinking it over again and again, Dr. Mason finally spoke.
“Send the order. Immediately close all passages leading to the northern experimental zone. Whether they are living dead or living people inside, not a single one is allowed out…”
Before he could finish speaking—
Dr. Mason suddenly felt warm liquid spray across the left side of his face. A thick, metallic smell of blood instantly rushed into his nose. Subconsciously, he touched the left side of his face and looked down.
His fingers were covered in blood.
Dr. Mason turned his head toward the direction the blood had sprayed from and saw a headless corpse standing right before his eyes. Blood continuously gushed from the severed neck, splattering everywhere. The clean, glossy floor was instantly dyed red.
Before Dr. Mason could understand what had happened, he watched as the headless corpse collapsed. It happened to fall beside a human head.
It was that man’s head.
When Dr. Mason saw the man’s severed head, his eyes widened in horror. The man who had been speaking beside him just moments ago had actually…
“Dr. Mason.”
A cold voice came from behind Dr. Mason.
It was a woman.
Dr. Mason’s heart pounded like a drum. His limbs stiffened as he slowly turned around to look.
He saw a woman with completely white eyes and dark bluish, bloodless skin like a corpse standing before him, sneering coldly at him. In her hand, she held a knife still dripping with blood.
“I finally found you.”
