After Marking the Omega Officer Who Was Pretending to Be an Alpha - Chapter 2
The morning sun poked its horns above the eastern horizon, and the light it released dyed half the sky red. Sunlight passed through the clouds and mist, spilling over the earth, and the city instantly became bright and glittering.
A gentle breeze blew.
Shao Enzhuo got up early in the morning and packed her schoolbag with her roommate, Jing Xiaoyi, before heading to the library. Final exams were next week. Since she usually spent her free time busy with part-time jobs, as a second-year university student, she could only spend more time studying now that finals were approaching.
She did not want to fail a subject and have to retake the exam.
On the way to the library, they passed by the school’s second cafeteria.
The two of them each bought a cup of soy milk and left.
After arriving at the library, Shao Enzhuo and Jing Xiaoyi went straight to an empty seat by the window on the third floor. The lighting there was good, and the view was also quite nice. Every time they came to the library, they would sit there. When they got tired from studying, they would look out the window at the campus scenery.
It was not even eight in the morning yet, but many people had already arrived at the library. The surroundings were so quiet that only the sounds of pages turning and pens writing quickly could be heard.
Shao Enzhuo put down her schoolbag and whispered to Jing Xiaoyi, “Xiaoyi, I’m going to the restroom.”
Jing Xiaoyi nodded. “Mm, go ahead.”
Shao Enzhuo turned and walked toward the restroom on the third floor.
After using the restroom, Shao Enzhuo stood in front of the sink, looked at herself in the mirror, and tidied her clothes a little. Then she left the restroom in a pleasant mood.
On her way back, a girl carrying a pile of books accidentally bumped her shoulder. A book slipped from the girl’s arms and fell to the floor. The girl clearly did not notice that the book had fallen. She only said sorry before hurrying away, looking as if she had something urgent to do.
“Classmate, your…”
Shao Enzhuo bent down and picked up the book from the floor, intending to return it to the girl. But just as she raised her head, the girl disappeared around the corner ahead.
“Book…”
One could not make loud noises in the library and disturb others, so she could only hold the book and chase after her. Unfortunately, by the time she reached the corner, that girl was already nowhere to be seen.
She did not know the girl from earlier, and now that the person was gone, she could only give up. She withdrew her gaze and looked at the book in her hand.
—Dawn.
A title like that, paired with a dark-colored cover, looked at first glance like the kind of novel that belonged to the apocalypse, sci-fi, or crime investigation genre.
Shao Enzhuo casually opened to a page and glanced at it. The three printed characters “Shao Enzhuo” instantly made her freeze.
A character in this book actually had the exact same name as her. They were both called Shao Enzhuo.
Could this be fate?
Wasn’t this a little too much of a coincidence?
In disbelief, Shao Enzhuo flipped through a few more pages. After confirming that there really was a character named Shao Enzhuo in the book, she closed it. She decided she would take her time reading it later.
A short while later, Jing Xiaoyi saw Shao Enzhuo return to her seat with a book in hand and asked, “Enzhuo, weren’t you going to the restroom? Why did you bring a book back?”
“When I was coming back just now, a classmate accidentally bumped into me. This book was dropped by that classmate. I originally wanted to return it to her, but she seemed to have something urgent and walked away very quickly. I didn’t have time to give it back,” Shao Enzhuo said while picking up the schoolbag on the table. “I saw that there’s a character in this book with the exact same name as me, so I wanted to read it.”
After hearing that, Jing Xiaoyi immediately became interested. She put down her pen and asked with great curiosity, “Enzhuo, you said there’s a character in this book with the exact same name as you?”
Shao Enzhuo said, “Yeah, Shao Enzhuo.”
Jing Xiaoyi asked, “What a coincidence?”
“I didn’t expect it to be this much of a coincidence either.” Shao Enzhuo slung her schoolbag over one shoulder. She decided to take a look at the book before its owner came back to look for it. “That classmate will definitely come back once she realizes the book is missing. Let’s move our seats over there, okay? That way, she won’t get anxious because she can’t find the book.”
Jing Xiaoyi understood what Shao Enzhuo meant and gladly agreed.
“Okay, let’s go.”
The two of them changed seats together.
The place where Shao Enzhuo now sat was near where the girl had dropped the book. As long as that girl came back to look for it,
she would definitely see her.
Shao Enzhuo opened the synopsis of Dawn.
—More than two hundred years ago, a terrifying virus plunged the world into misery and devastation. Walking corpses became humanity’s nightmare, striking fear into everyone who heard of them. In the desperate apocalypse, humanity used towering walls to build the only survivor base, the Capital of Hope, protecting the survivors within and keeping the walking corpses outside.
—Humans differentiate into either Alphas or Omegas at the age of eighteen. In order to save the world and rebuild a beautiful homeland, humans who differentiate into Alphas must join the Hope Organization, leave the Capital of Hope, and clear out the walking corpses. Meanwhile, Omegas, who can easily conceive and bear children, become key targets of surveillance. Omegas can only be assigned by the organization to Alphas who have made contributions, all for the sake of continuing human reproduction. Betas, on the other hand, are nameless laborers without any status.
—After a hundred years of conditioning, humanity has long since become numb to these twisted regulations that forcibly strip people of freedom and human rights. They do not know how to resist, nor do they dare to resist.
—Resistance will only result in being killed by the organization.
Before Shao Enzhuo had even finished reading, she was already furious.
She simply stopped reading the synopsis.
She wanted to see just how twisted and devoid of human rights the apocalyptic world in this book really was. But just as she turned to the first page, her mind suddenly spun with dizziness. Her vision went black, and she lost consciousness.
—
“This girl couldn’t be dead, could she?”
“Hey, young lady, wake up…”
“Should we take this young lady to a clinic and have her looked at?”
…
In a daze, Shao Enzhuo heard many people speaking around her. She felt as if she were drifting along the edge of a dream. The noisy voices around her made her head ache a little. The instant her consciousness returned, she unconsciously opened her eyes.
Several completely unfamiliar faces came into view.
And there was also blue sky and white clouds.
“She’s awake! She’s awake!”
A little girl said excitedly.
Shao Enzhuo looked at the strangers crouching in front of her and staring at her, feeling extremely confused. Then she realized that she was lying on the cold ground, so she slowly propped herself up and sat.
“You are…”
“Big sister,” the little girl asked, “are you okay?”
Shao Enzhuo, whose face was full of bewilderment, did not answer the little girl. Instead, she raised her head and looked around.
There were no skyscrapers, no cars, no streets, and not the slightest trace of a modern city. This was a completely unfamiliar place she had never seen before.
The buildings here were a bit more old-fashioned, and also much older and simpler. Almost all around her were houses built from wooden planks and uneven stones, giving the feeling of an old street and aged alley. The people’s appearances and clothing were not all that different, except that their clothes were simpler and plainer.
Facing unfamiliar people and an unfamiliar environment, Shao Enzhuo was clearly somewhat at a loss.
“Where is this…”
“Big sister, you were walking on the road just now when you suddenly fainted. We thought you had suddenly collapsed and died. We were just about to send you to the clinic. Luckily, you woke up,” the little girl crouching in front of Shao Enzhuo said, looking at her with concern. “Big sister, it’s good that you’re okay.”
When the others saw that Shao Enzhuo was fine, they dispersed.
Shao Enzhuo could understand every word the little girl said, but she could not quite understand what she meant. What did she mean, Shao Enzhuo had been walking and suddenly fainted? Hadn’t she been in the library with Jing Xiaoyi, preparing to review? How had she suddenly come to this place? And why had she fainted here? Just where was this strange place?
It was truly inconceivable.
Shao Enzhuo raised her eyes and met the little girl’s bright, pure gaze, then asked again, “Excuse me, where is this?”
The little girl froze for a moment.
How could someone from the Capital of Hope not know where this was? The little girl found Shao Enzhuo’s sudden question rather strange.
“This is the Capital of Hope. Big sister, what’s wrong? Why would you ask me that?”
Shao Enzhuo was very familiar with the four words Capital of Hope. It seemed as if she had heard or seen them somewhere before.
“The Capital of Hope?”
“Yes,” the little girl nodded. “The Capital of Hope.”
