After The Cannon Fodder Died, She Became The Female Lead’s White Moonlight (GL) - Chapter 27.1
Shen Sijin received a message from Che Gulai while she was in class.
[Ice Block Miss: Follow me somewhere after school.]
As soon as class was over, Shen Sijin rushed to the school gate. From a distance, she saw Che Gulai’s car. She tapped on the car window.
“Get in.”
Shen Sijin sat in the passenger seat and opened with a smile, “Where are we going?”
Che Gulai replied indifferently, “A good place.”
After driving for almost half an hour, Che Gulai stopped the car.
Shen Sijin got out and saw they had arrived at a high-end hospital. The sign above read “Psychiatric and Psychological Care Center.”
She had a premonition of unease. She forced a smile. “Gulai, did we come to the wrong place?”
“We did not come to the wrong place.” Che Gulai’s expression was calm.
“Why… are we here?”
Che Gulai looked at her quietly.
Shen Sijin’s palms felt cold, and her face was pale. “Is it… for me to see a doctor?”
“Mhm.”
“Why?” Shen Sijin refused to believe it, forcing her smile. “Do you think I’m sick?”
Che Gulai had wanted to bring her here for a long time. Shen Sijin’s abnormality was too strange; she was a completely different person from before.
The current her was innocent, talkative, and constantly saying strange, incomprehensible things. What was even more bizarre was that she had fallen in love with Che Gulai, which was the most absurd thing.
Che Gulai suspected she had a dual personality. She needed to verify if this was true. If she did have a dual personality, and the former gloomy, neurotic Shen Sijin reappeared, everything she was doing would be meaningless. Instead, she would become a joke, having played along with a psychiatric patient for so long.
So she absolutely had to know what was going on with the current Shen Sijin.
Shen Sijin’s face was bloodless. She didn’t want to go in.
This was a place of pain. She had been trapped in a place like this for two years, where she was constantly strapped down with restraints, not allowed to go out, and even subjected to electric shock therapy from time to time.
She had too many nightmares from that place: her mother’s desperate screams, her shadow, the loneliness and coldness, the agony of the electric shocks.
She never wanted to relive that pain.
“Gulai, I don’t want to go in.” Shen Sijin pleaded with a trembling voice. “I’m not sick. I’m normal.”
“Xiao Jin,” Che Gulai feigned comfort. “Don’t be afraid. It will be over quickly.”
“No… don’t.” Shen Sijin grabbed her arm, her eyes showing a frantic, nervous panic. “Gulai, I truly am not sick. Tell me, where did I make you misunderstand? I will explain everything to you, really.”
Che Gulai couldn’t very well say, I suspect you have a dual personality, especially since Shen Sijin herself probably didn’t know she had one.
Seeing Che Gulai not answering, Shen Sijin grew more panicked. Her words began to become incoherent.
“Is it because I’m too clingy sometimes? I’m sorry, I will try my best to change. I won’t cause you any trouble.” Shen Sijin was terrified. “Gulai, believe me, I will be very obedient. I won’t cling to you too much… As long as I’m obedient, they will all forgive me. I won’t lie to you.”
Che Gulai had never seen Shen Sijin so terrified, like a pathetic little kitten afraid of being abandoned.
She stood frozen. A strange feeling of discomfort rose in her heart, like a tiny fracture breaking open in her bones.
She didn’t know what the feeling was, like cold seawater flooding her heart.
“Alright.” Che Gulai finally spoke, pressing her thin lips together.
“Let’s go back.”
Shen Sijin sat in the car, her expression no longer easy as it was when they arrived. She was blank and wooden, as if her emotions had been stripped away, leaving only an empty shell.
Che Gulai glanced at her, wanting to say something, but ultimately held her tongue.
After dropping her off at her school gate, Shen Sijin slowly unbuckled her seatbelt but didn’t get out.
“Gulai.” She looked blankly at the students laughing outside, her voice very soft.
“Mhm.”
“Am I abnormal?”
The car was silent for a few seconds.
Che Gulai looked down. “What are you trying to say?”
Shen Sijin slowly blinked. “Nothing.”
She got out of the car and slowly walked toward the school gate.
The entrance was filled with students walking in groups, everyone smiling happily. Only Shen Sijin walked alone.
Her figure was frail and slender, completely out of place with the lively crowd, as if she… didn’t belong to this world.
Che Gulai irritably hit the steering wheel, unsure if she was angry about Shen Sijin’s non-cooperation or something else.
Since that day, Shen Sijin seemed to be genuinely fulfilling her promise, no longer messaging her as frequently as before. Although they still chatted, she kept it within an appropriate boundary.
She seemed utterly terrified that Che Gulai would send her to the hospital.
Che Gulai thought about it afterward. Perhaps that incident really did shock her. Did she really not have a mental illness?
Che Gulai was completely perplexed.
She could only take things one step at a time. Regardless of whether she had a dual personality or not, she was still Shen Sijin. No matter how she changed, she couldn’t erase the wicked things she had done in the past.
As long as this person was by her side, Che Gulai would find a way to make her suffer.
She couldn’t let her leave. Only with Shen Sijin in her grasp could Che Gulai have the chance to witness her weeping face.
Che Gulai thought this made perfect sense.
But the little rabbit must be sad now. She had to find a way to reassure the fool.
Che Gulai deliberately chose a day and asked Shen Sijin out. Although she didn’t know what Shen Sijin liked, her previous happy moments suggested she was quite childlike.
So she invited Shen Sijin to an amusement park.
Shen Sijin had been very restrained about seeing Che Gulai these past few days. Besides not wanting to be clingy, she also temporarily didn’t want to face Che Gulai.
Che Gulai’s actions reminded her of her grandfather, the old man who detested her existence.
Although Che Gulai’s intentions might not be the same as her grandfather’s, she was bothered by it nonetheless.
After this time apart, Shen Sijin found that despite her reservations about Che Gulai, her feelings for her were still intense.
Just a word from Che Gulai was enough to ignite her passion.
The amusement park wasn’t crowded today. Che Gulai said to Shen Sijin, “Play whatever you want.”
Shen Sijin rarely visited amusement parks and was quite excited. She wanted to ride everything, and Che Gulai accompanied her.
Soon, Shen Sijin temporarily forgot her previous unhappiness, focusing only on enjoying the various rides.
The two played until nearly evening, then rode the sunset Ferris wheel. Shen Sijin looked straight down at the golden-hued buildings below.
Che Gulai sat across from her. Seeing her in a good mood, she seized the opportunity to speak. “Are you still angry?”
Shen Sijin turned her head. “About what?”
“What happened that day. I’m sorry.”
Shen Sijin smiled obediently. “It’s nothing. Maybe I was a bit too much that day, which made you uncomfortable and made you think I…” She paused. “Just promise not to bring it up again, and I won’t be angry, okay?”
She feigned annoyance.
Che Gulai gave a faint tug at her lip. “Alright.”
It seems I’m close to smoothing things over.
Che Gulai thought.
After the Ferris wheel, Che Gulai stopped Shen Sijin. “Wait a moment. I want to show you something.”
Shen Sijin was curious and followed her into a small building.
It was very dark inside. Shen Sijin could barely see anything.
Che Gulai pressed a switch. A small lamp dimly lit up. Shen Sijin saw a huge, moon-shaped, hollow, frosted glass sculpture in front of them. The surface seemed to be carved with many patterns, but the light was too dim for Shen Sijin to see what they were.
Che Gulai pressed another switch.
Suddenly, the patterns on the surface lit up one by one. Countless fluorescent blue butterflies slowly appeared, one after another.
The patterns were actually various shapes of butterflies!
Each butterfly glowed with a firefly-like blue light, and soon the entire moon-shaped glass was covered in them.
It looked as if countless beautiful butterflies were resting on the clear moon, sacred and beautiful, like stepping into an elven fantasy from a fairy tale.
Shen Sijin stared in awe.
“Is it beautiful?” Che Gulai asked.
“Mhm,” Shen Sijin said seriously. “It’s so pretty.”
“This is a new fluorescent butterfly exhibition the amusement park is holding. It hasn’t opened to the public yet. You’re the first person to see it.”
“Are you happy?”
Shen Sijin turned her head. The fluorescent light of the butterflies shimmered on both of them, making their figures look hazy and dreamy.
“Happy,” Shen Sijin turned back to look at the butterflies, smiling. “Thank you.”
Che Gulai looked at her smile, thinking, She’s easily pleased.
On the way back to the dorm, Che Gulai gave her a small box.
Inside was a pair of butterfly earrings. She knew Shen Sijin liked things related to butterflies. Che Gulai had casually picked up this pair from a store.
They were purple butterflies. She had wanted to buy blue ones, but the store was out and required an appointment. Che Gulai couldn’t be bothered, just wanting to appease Shen Sijin quickly.
Shen Sijin thought Che Gulai was unusually enthusiastic today, but she enjoyed it and didn’t think too much of it.
“I had a lot of fun today,” Shen Sijin smiled slightly and said to Che Gulai, “Thank you for spending time with me today.”
“As long as you’re not angry,” Che Gulai said.
“Are you very afraid of me being angry?”
Che Gulai’s tone was calm. “We’re dating, so naturally, yes.”
Shen Sijin smiled shyly. “Then I’ll go inside now.”
She returned to the dorm and opened the small box. Inside were the purple butterfly earrings.
Purple.
Her most hated color.
But the overall design was still very beautiful, and more importantly, Che Gulai had given them to her.
Che Gulai had given her quite a few things—the bracelet, the earrings.
Shen Sijin smiled. Was her way of apologizing by giving gifts?
She didn’t have her ears pierced and planned to keep them aside for now and get her ears pierced later.
Their relationship was quite harmonious for a while afterward. Shen Sijin would occasionally make her desserts, and Che Gulai would consistently say they were delicious.
Shen Sijin seemed to have forgotten the incident with Che Gulai that day, but sometimes in her dreams, she would still see Che Gulai sending her to a mental hospital. She would always wake up in a cold sweat.
Then, she would touch the bracelet Che Gulai had given her and tell herself that Che Gulai wouldn’t do such a thing.
She is not that kind of person.
Shen Sijin frantically comforted herself this way.
In the underground parking lot, Che Gulai had just parked her car and was about to take the elevator up when someone called out to her from behind.
“Sister.”
The voice was clear and clean, like the voice of someone between a boy and a man.
Che Gulai’s hand on the car door froze. Her eyes flashed with hatred.
She turned around, facing the man who spoke, her gaze icy. “Chen Youfan.”
“You still remember me.” The man had a feminine face, looking darkly handsome, a smile hanging on his lips. He was completely nonchalant. “I’m so happy, Sister.”
“You dare to return to the country.” Che Gulai’s long, phoenix eyes showed a hint of cold rage. “Did you think I’d forgiven you?”
Chen Youfan shrugged, smiling playfully. “Since you’re here, Sister, of course I had to return.”
“I heard Zhou Zi was imprisoned.” Chen Youfan slowly approached her, his eyes playful. “You did that, didn’t you, Sister? Well done. Now no one will try to snatch you from me.”
If Zhou Zi was a foolish, selfish brute, Chen Youfan was a sinister, cunning fox.
Both were cut from the same cloth, and both equally disgusted Che Gulai.
“You’re overthinking it.” Che Gulai gave a cold tug at the corner of her mouth. “You’ll end up just like him.”
Chen Youfan chuckled softly. “I’m really looking forward to that.”
He leaned close to Che Gulai’s face and said word by word, “Sister, how’s your leg doing?”
Che Gulai’s surroundings instantly turned icy. The look in her eyes suggested she wanted to kill him.
No one knew that Che Gulai’s leg had once been broken. The culprit was Chen Youfan.
Chen Youfan was extremely possessive. Seeing Zhou Zi constantly clinging to Che Gulai, he developed a perverse idea of turning Che Gulai into his golden canary, dependent on him for everything.
So he ordered someone to break her legs, so she could never walk again, intending to turn her into a beautiful invalid.
But Che Gulai unfortunately escaped. She ended up lying in the hospital for three months due to a fractured left leg.
That leg was left with a persistent after-effect. It would throb faintly during strenuous exercise or in cold, damp weather. Che Gulai hadn’t told anyone about this. No one could tell there was anything wrong with her leg.
Seeing her cold expression, Chen Youfan smiled innocently. “It’s such a pity, Sister, that you got away that day. If you had just listened to me, perhaps you wouldn’t have had to suffer like that.”
Che Gulai’s voice was icy. “Being next to you is my true suffering.”
Chen Youfan reached out to touch her shoulder. Che Gulai quickly backed away in disgust.
He didn’t get angry, merely curving his eyes. “Sister, now that Zhou Zi is gone, no one in this world will fight me for you. You have to believe that you and I are alike—hated by everyone in this world. We are the same kind of people.”
Che Gulai felt nauseated. She wanted to savagely cut his face with a knife.
Chen Youfan turned to leave, but suddenly added before walking away, “I heard you’ve been quite close with Shen Sijin recently. Sister, what’s your relationship with her?”
“I’ll tell you when you’re dead.”
Chen Youfan chuckled a few times. “She treated you so badly before. How can you be so forgiving? When did Sister become so magnanimous?”
Che Gulai narrowed her eyes.
“Aren’t you afraid she’ll hurt you again?” Chen Youfan seemed ecstatic. “Sister, everyone around you is bad news, including Shen Sijin. Ah, I know I’m bad too, but I love you, so you should really consider me, okay?”
Che Gulai’s mood sank to the extreme. Her beautiful face was covered in a sheet of frost. She covered her face, only letting a pair of dark, ominous eyes show.
Her left leg seemed to start aching.
The hateful memory resurfaced. A tsunami of hatred swelled in Che Gulai’s mind.
She must kill Chen Youfan.
And Shen Sijin, too.
The whole damned lot of them.
Che Gulai made a phone call. She told the person on the other end, “Get the surveillance data recovered immediately. I need it now.”
Shen Sijin made a new dessert today and planned to deliver it to Che Gulai’s lounge. On the way, she ran into Xiao Xu. Xiao Xu saw her and said anxiously, “Miss Shen, could you do me a favor?”
“What is it?”
Xiao Xu handed a pile of documents to Shen Sijin, clutching her stomach. “Could you take these files to Ms. Che’s office for me? I need to go to the restroom urgently. I can’t hold it in.”
Shen Sijin: “Oh, sure. Go ahead.”
She took the files to Che Gulai’s office and placed them on her desk.
Che Gulai didn’t allow anyone in her office, so Shen Sijin planned to leave quickly. But her gaze swept over something, and she changed direction, walking toward a cabinet.
It seemed to be a storage cabinet, cluttered with various items. At the bottom, several beautifully decorated boxes were stacked.
They looked exactly like the gift boxes she used for her desserts.
Shen Sijin didn’t understand why empty boxes were stored here. Why wouldn’t she throw the boxes away after finishing the contents?
Then, she saw a transparent box. She had used that one time when she couldn’t find any other box.
She liked to surprise Che Gulai, so she always decorated the boxes to be opaque. This was the only transparent one.
So she could clearly see the spoiled mousse inside.
Shen Sijin instinctively opened the cabinet and then opened each of the boxes, one by one.
Without exception, they were all spoiled desserts. They didn’t even look like they had been touched.
These were all the desserts she had made for her recently.
They were all ruined.
Che Gulai hadn’t eaten a single bite.
Shen Sijin remembered Che Gulai’s praise for her desserts on WeChat. If she hadn’t eaten them, how could she have thought they tasted good?
Shen Sijin looked at the spoiled desserts, her whole body turning cold.
Why did Che Gulai lie to her?
If she didn’t like them, why didn’t she just say so?
No wonder her answer that day was so strange. She had mistakenly said strawberry mousse instead of blueberry mousse, yet Che Gulai hadn’t noticed anything wrong.
Because she hadn’t tasted it at all.
Perhaps, Che Gulai hadn’t eaten a single one of all the desserts she had made up to now, simply tossing them all into a corner like junk.
Shen Sijin couldn’t understand the meaning behind her actions.
What was the point of all the desserts she had worked so hard to make these past few days?
If she didn’t like them, she could have just told her, and she wouldn’t have made them. Why lie to her?
Che Gulai hadn’t even bothered to open the boxes.
A nail called mockery pierced deeply into Shen Sijin’s bones. Looking at the unrecognizable desserts, a cold shame flowed through her limbs.
She had been so pleased with herself these past few days, believing that someone finally accepted her efforts. But reality had slapped her hard, brutally telling her—No one will accept anything from Shen Sijin.
She hated being lied to.
I have to ask her.
Shen Sijin tried to rationalize it to herself, thinking Che Gulai must have a reason for her deception.
She staggered to her feet, wanting to leave this place.
Just then, Che Gulai walked into the office.
“Gulai, I want to ask you—”
“Who gave you permission to enter my office?” Che Gulai was in a terrible mood. Seeing her face only increased her revulsion.
“I…” Shen Sijin stammered. “I want to ask you something.”
“Get out.” Che Gulai’s face was icy. Seeing she wouldn’t move, she grabbed her hand and pulled her toward the door.
“I’m busy. Don’t come in.” Che Gulai said, then closed the door.
Shen Sijin was practically chased out. She stared blankly at the door, feeling utterly hollow.
Che Gulai’s coldness was like a block of ice. Even though it was early summer, Shen Sijin felt cold.
She returned to her dorm. Bai Mingyu saw her looking lost and came over to ask, “Why the long face?”
Shen Sijin didn’t know how to tell Bai Mingyu. After a long pause, she asked Bai Mingyu vaguely.
“Mingyu, how would you feel if someone wasted the food you worked hard to make?”
“I’d be angry, of course,” Bai Mingyu said. “I worked so hard to make it, and they wasted it? They must be looking down on me.”
Shen Sijin murmured, “Angry?”
Was she angry now?
It didn’t feel quite like anger. It was more like a sense of sadness, an emptiness in her heart, and the sorrow of being played.
