After The Cannon Fodder Died, She Became The Female Lead’s White Moonlight (GL) - Chapter 30.2
Shen Sijin covered her face. Sorrow swept over her inappropriately. She squatted down in pain, wanting desperately to cry but unable to.
Che Gulai.
She silently called the name in her heart.
Che Gulai, Che Gulai, Che Gulai, Che Gulai, Che Gulai.
She didn’t know how many times she called the name in her mind.
I am so sad.
Gulai, I am so sad.
She couldn’t help but cry into her hands.
Why don’t you love me?
Why do you treat me this way?
I truly hate you to death.
Meanwhile, Che Gulai was watching Sang He, who was being praised. But her mind wasn’t there.
Her thoughts were filled with Shen Sijin’s sorrowful face from earlier.
So annoying.
Why am I thinking about this person?
Che Gulai stood in a corner, her demeanor icy, looking unapproachable.
When Sang He came over to talk to her, she paid little attention.
“Where did you get these butterfly earrings?” Sang He was curious. “You managed to find a similar pair in such a short time.”
Che Gulai didn’t want to say that she had taken them from Shen Sijin.
Sang He took them off. “Do you want me to disinfect them before giving them back?”
Che Gulai looked at the beautiful, delicate butterfly earrings. She frowned and said, “Keep them. You wear them.”
Perhaps realizing her behavior was truly callous, Che Gulai decided to offer a small compensation.
She specifically messaged Shen Sijin, telling her she would go to her house that evening and personally cook for her.
Shen Sijin looked at the message, but her heart was unmoved. She didn’t want to see Che Gulai, but today was her birthday.
It was her birthday in that world.
She had never celebrated a birthday. Her birth was a mistake; she didn’t deserve a birthday.
She had lived for more than twenty years and never celebrated a single birthday.
She desperately wanted someone to celebrate her birthday with her.
Che Gulai was the person she had loved. She wanted Che Gulai to spend a birthday with her—the first and the last time.
Bai Mingyu saw Shen Sijin order a bowl of longevity noodles and jokingly asked if it was her birthday today.
Shen Sijin said yes.
Bai Mingyu was surprised and quickly went to buy her a gift. She was so enthusiastic that Shen Sijin spent the entire day experiencing the joy of a birthday celebrant, thanks to her.
Bai Mingyu even displayed “Happy Birthday Shen Sijin” on the school’s screen wall. Shen Sijin was mortified.
In the evening, Bai Mingyu wanted to take her out, but Shen Sijin politely declined, saying she had someone to be with.
Bai Mingyu was unhappy. “Are you going to be with Che Gulai? Didn’t I tell you to break up with her? She’s not a good person.”
Shen Sijin smiled. “I know, Mingyu. I just have something I want to say to her. Don’t worry, I know what I’m doing.”
“What do you know?” Bai Mingyu frowned. “You’re so easily soft-hearted. I’m afraid you won’t be decisive enough.”
Shen Sijin tilted her head and offered a smile. “I know who is kind to me. I know what I should do and what I shouldn’t.”
That evening, Shen Sijin waited for Che Gulai at home.
Che Gulai had already bought ingredients and was on her way when she received a call from Sang He’s assistant.
Sang He had an accident while filming, falling from a height, and was being rushed to the hospital.
Che Gulai wavered between Shen Sijin and Sang He, until the assistant said Sang He’s leg might be broken and she was crying non-stop at the hospital.
Che Gulai gritted her teeth and drove to the hospital.
Bai Mingyu’s family member was sick, and she happened to be at the hospital taking care of them today. She accidentally saw Che Gulai.
She followed her impulsively.
She saw Che Gulai enter a ward. Peeking inside, she saw a girl—it was Sang He.
As soon as Sang He saw Che Gulai, she hugged her waist. “Sister Gulai, my leg hurts so much. Am I going to have to have it amputated?”
Che Gulai stroked her head and said something to comfort her.
Shen Sijin waited at home from evening until late at night. Che Gulai never showed up. She only sent one message saying, “Emergency, will be late,” and then disappeared.
The clock ticked on. Shen Sijin sat on the sofa, like a broken, stiff puppet.
The picture Bai Mingyu sent her made her body rigid.
It was a picture of Che Gulai and Sang He together.
Che Gulai had chosen Sang He once again.
Her hands inexplicably started trembling. Shen Sijin pressed down on her hands, but the shaking grew worse. Her nails dug savagely into her wrist.
She tried to regain her composure.
The chasm of disappointment widened, threatening to swallow her whole.
Sang He looked at Che Gulai’s absentmindedness and asked, “Do you have something on your mind?”
Che Gulai was startled. She shook her head. “No.”
“Really?” Sang He thought of something. “Hey, it’s Shen Sijin’s birthday today. Aren’t you going to spend time with her?”
Che Gulai looked up abruptly. “What?”
Sang He showed her phone. “I saw Bai Mingyu post it.”
She realized something. “Sister Gulai, you… didn’t know?”
Che Gulai didn’t speak.
Sang He grew anxious. “Then hurry up and go! If I had known it was her birthday, I wouldn’t have asked you to come.”
Che Gulai’s voice was calm. “Forget it. It’s too late to go back now. I’ll celebrate it with her next time.”
Sang He protested. “Don’t say that! Every birthday is important. It shouldn’t be divided into ‘this time’ and ‘next time.’ Shen Sijin is important to you; you can’t ignore her!”
“She’s not important to me.”
Sang He was at a loss for words. “Sister Gulai, outsiders see clearly, while those involved are confused. Do you really believe she’s not important?”
She nudged Che Gulai. “There’s still time. If you hurry and buy a cake, you can still make it. Go now!”
Che Gulai frowned. “Your leg?”
“It was a false alarm. It’s nothing.” Sang He pushed her. “I’m not important. Hurry up and go buy the cake.”
Che Gulai seemed deep in thought. Then she stood up and rushed out.
Sang He hit her own head. “I’m going to die. Why do I have no self-awareness?”
At ten minutes past eleven, Shen Sijin decided Che Gulai wasn’t coming. She had been too naive. Even this small, fragile wish couldn’t be granted.
She stood up, intending to go to bed.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
A series of urgent knocks at the door.
Shen Sijin thought it was someone else and opened the door.
Che Gulai stood there, holding a cake and gasping for breath.
“You…” Shen Sijin looked confused.
“Happy Birthday,” Che Gulai said. “I’m late. I’m sorry.”
Shen Sijin glanced at the time.
Twelve o’clock and five minutes.
Her birthday was already over.
Che Gulai opened the cake box and put candles in it.
Che Gulai looked at her. “Make a wish.”
Shen Sijin didn’t know what to wish for.
Now, she didn’t dare to wish for anything more. Gaining something only to lose it would only bring more pain.
She had accepted reality. She didn’t want anything, because she would never get it.
She closed her eyes and still made a wish.
“Eat the cake,” Che Gulai said, cutting a slice and handing it to her.
Her manner was gentle, truly like a caring lover.
Shen Sijin took a bite of the cake. It was sweet.
She ate slowly, but a line of tears ran down her eyes.
Che Gulai was stunned. “Why… are you crying?”
Shen Sijin looked up, stretching her lips into a wide smile. Her eyes curved like a crescent moon, yet she was crying profusely.
“Because you came to celebrate my birthday.”
Che Gulai thought she was crying out of gratitude. She sighed in relief and said casually, “It’s just a birthday. I’ll celebrate it with you again next time.”
There will be no next time.
Shen Sijin thought silently.
I lied to you.
I’m not happy at all.
And why am I crying?
Che Gulai, do you truly not know?
You definitely don’t know.
The cake in Shen Sijin’s mouth tasted bitterly sweet, and also salty.
She was crying not because Che Gulai had arrived.
But because the beautiful dream was shattered.
She was insignificant to Che Gulai.
Che Gulai did not love her.
She must have had some other purpose for dating her. As for what that purpose was, Shen Sijin didn’t want to know.
Foolish as she was, she only realized this reality now.
She was wrong. She shouldn’t have gotten involved with the female lead.
Perhaps, she would never love Che Gulai again.
