After the Early-Deceased White Moonlight of a Wealthy Family Returns (GL) - Chapter 17
Meng Dongdong quietly tugged at her sister’s clothes. When Meng Xi looked back, Dongdong stood on her tiptoes and whispered to her: “Meng Xi, what’s the situation? Why is Sister Su Wu being so nice to her?”
From the moment Su Wu arrived, Meng Dongdong had sensed that something was off.
Meng Xi replied: “If you have this much free time to study these things all day, why don’t you focus on your studies? What did you score on your IELTS this time? Do I need to remind you?”
Meng Dongdong pouted: “It’s the weekend. Why bring up school? It’s such a buzzkill.”
Meng Xi raised her hand and gave her a tap on the head: “I think you’re the buzzkill!”
Meng Dongdong was a late-born child for the Meng parents, so the age gap between her and Meng Xi was huge. She had been pampered since childhood, growing up with a spoiled temper and a blunt way of speaking. Only in front of Su Wu would she behave a bit more obediently. As for her biological sister, the two had a “love-hate” dynamic and often couldn’t stand the sight of each other.
Meng Dongdong believed that the reason for this was entirely because Meng Xi was a “jerk.” She had a sister like her but didn’t know how to cherish it, choosing instead to find ways to tease her every few days.
She peeked at Shen You’an and Su Wu walking ahead.
The woman’s pace was brisk; it seemed as if nothing in this life had ever managed to trip her up. What Meng Dongdong liked about Su Wu was exactly this sense of decisiveness—strong personalities were her type. Shen You’an was different; she was a beat slower, following half a step behind Su Wu, occasionally glancing sideways at her.
“Strange,” Meng Dongdong stroked her chin. “This atmosphere of being ‘semi-familiar yet not’ is so weird. Is You’an really Sister Su Wu’s sister?”
“Didn’t we just say? A friend from abroad asked her to take care of her.” This was the answer Su Wu had given to Meng Dongdong’s inquiry during their chat earlier.
“Then they aren’t that close,” Meng Dongdong mused. “So You’an has suddenly moved into Sister Su Wu’s house.”
Meng Dongdong thought it over and came up with an idea: “Sis, why don’t you ‘kidnap’ You’an over to our house instead?”
Meng Xi stumbled, nearly tripping over her own feet: “What do you mean?”
“Sister Su Wu is so busy, how can she find time to take care of someone? You’an just returned to the country and isn’t familiar with anything. I think we need to find someone with time to accompany her, like, me~ Anyway, our house has extra rooms, and we’re not short on money. Actually, why not let You’an transfer to my class? With me backing her up, there won’t be any problems.”
“Whatever scheme you’re cooking up, you’d better shut your mouth.” Meng Xi wouldn’t dare snatch a “cub” from Su Wu’s hands. That would be a death wish. “Don’t even think about it,” she warned Meng Dongdong. “Besides, Xiao An isn’t a cat or a dog that you can just take home because you want to. Have you considered her opinion?”
Meng Dongdong snorted.
She wasn’t cooking up any bad schemes!
She completely understood You’an’s feelings!
Thinking back, she had also returned from abroad alone when she was less than ten years old. After returning, all her social relationships had changed. For Meng Dongdong, it was a very difficult time. Although she liked Sister Su Wu, she also knew very well that with Su Wu’s personality, she wasn’t suited to be a caregiver during such a time.
Wouldn’t it be great for her, the little sister, to lend Sister Su Wu a helping hand?
Maybe Sister Su Wu would even look at her more highly~
As Meng Dongdong was lost in her little plans, Shen You’an, for some reason, stumbled slightly and leaned forward. Su Wu, who had been walking straight ahead without looking back, suddenly reached out and steadied Shen You’an’s forearm.
“We’re going downhill. Don’t get distracted while walking,” Su Wu said.
Shen You’an nodded and said thank you.
She tried hard to push the memory of last night’s Su Wu out of her mind.
Meng Dongdong’s mouth hung open slightly.
She had known Sister Su Wu for so many years, and she hadn’t even had her hand held yet!
Meng Xi whispered snidely in her ear: “Understand now? Xiao An is different to your Sister Su Wu.”
Meng Dongdong thought to herself: What do you mean ‘different’? Could You’an’s family have saved Su Wu’s life or something!
Forced to drop her messy plans, Meng Dongdong figured that given how much Sister Su Wu valued You’an, she would probably take good care of her.
“Let’s have dinner together tonight,” Meng Dongdong said enthusiastically as they neared the ranch’s parking lot. “Sister Su Wu, it’s been a long time since we’ve seen each other. Let’s eat together, okay? It’s also my first time meeting Xiao An, and I want to chat with her some more.”
Su Wu looked at Shen You’an.
It was hard for Shen You’an to refuse such an enthusiastic “little bun.”
The moment she nodded, Meng Dongdong cheered. “Perfect! I know a restaurant that’s been very popular lately. The food is great and it’s not too far from here. Shall we go now? I’ll call to see if they have a table.”
“Sure,” Shen You’an replied.
The restaurant Meng Dongdong recommended was a “treehouse” restaurant by a lake, five kilometers from the ranch. It served fusion cuisine; she wasn’t sure about the taste, but the decor, atmosphere, and presentation of the dishes were all top-notch.
In Su Wu’s car, Meng Dongdong—who had abandoned her biological sister—squeezed in next to Shen You’an, showing her pictures on her phone: “Look, I think this foie gras truffle cream rice looks pretty good. Ahhh, my mouth is watering just talking about it. Let’s do this, You’an, let’s add each other on WeChat. I’ll send you the shop link so you can see if there’s anything you want to eat. We can order in advance. I heard their service is a bit slow, so it’s better to strike first!”
Shen You’an agreed and rolled up her hoodie sleeve in front of Meng Dongdong.
Meng Dongdong was puzzled.
She watched as Shen You’an tapped the screen of her watch a few times to bring up a QR code.
Meng Dongdong: “Wait, what brand of watch is this? I’ve never seen it.”
Shen You’an recalled: “I think it’s called ‘Little Prodigy’.”
Meng Dongdong: “…?” Was her memory failing her? Wasn’t that a brand that sold children’s watches?
Whatever.
Meng Dongdong pushed the confusion to the back of her mind and said to Shen You’an: “Since we’re at it, give me your phone number too. I’ll save it so I can find you for fun things later.”
Shen You’an actually didn’t know what her phone number was.
She remembered the sales clerk at the watch shop mentioning something: “Sister Su, do you need to approve it on your end before I can add Dongdong to my contact list?”
Su Wu gave a hum of affirmation. “I’ll add her in a moment.”
Meng Dongdong watched, dumbfounded: “…Huh?”
Su Wu glanced at Meng Dongdong through the mirror and explained: “She just returned and hasn’t set up a SIM card yet, so we bought a children’s watch as a temporary substitute. To protect the child’s safety, the watch forces parent-controlled contact lists.”
Meng Dongdong nodded repeatedly, but in her heart, she thought: My God, it really is a children’s watch.
Those in the know would call it a necessary measure; those who didn’t might think this was some kind of weird roleplay—
But then she thought again: What year is it? A quick search on TB shows international SIM cards everywhere. You’an returned to the country but didn’t know to get a SIM card first? How strange.
Sigh, what does it have to do with me anyway? Meng Dongdong quickly stopped her runaway thoughts.
Meng Dongdong said: “Stop using that tiny watch. The screen is the size of a fingernail; you’ll ruin your eyes. Look at my phone.” She pulled at You’an’s clothes to bring her closer, moving her phone screen between the two of them. “Take a look, anything you want to eat?”
Shen You’an didn’t have a single picky-eating bone left in her body.
She looked at the menu photos and wanted to eat everything. She looked up at Su Wu: “Sister Su, what do you want to eat?”
Su Wu’s gaze swept over the two shoulders that were pressed very close together.
“Anything is fine,” she said tonelessly.
Meng Dongdong was proactive: “Then I’ll pick for Sister Su Wu!”
They chatted lively all the way. As they arrived at the parking lot and the driver was parking, Meng Dongdong was looking outside for her sister when she suddenly spotted someone familiar.
“Ugh, how annoying,” Meng Dongdong said unhappily. “How can I run into her here, too?”
“Who?” Shen You’an asked.
“Shen Zhirou,” Meng Dongdong grumbled, acting like a restless pony. “She’s everywhere. It’s like she’s haunting me!”
