Chapter 48
Yu Sui was feeding Xinxin dinner. She had promised that if Xinxin finished her food obediently, she would be rewarded with a bottle of yogurt. However, Xinxin had waited for a long time and still hadn’t seen Auntie Yu or the yogurt.
There were only a few “suspicious” spots in the house. Xinxin instinctively waddled over to the outside of her mother’s study; Auntie Yu and Mom loved hiding in there lately.
Mom was in the study working, but Xinxin’s goal was clear: she was looking for Auntie Yu. Her purpose was also very clear—to get her yogurt reward.
Yu Sui gazed at the lips that were so close she could touch them. She lingered, reluctant to pull away, even though Chu Jiayun hadn’t given her any hint, let alone encouragement.
Xinxin’s voice, filled with longing and expectation, continued unabated. However, the force of her pounding on the door had lessened significantly; she was clearly getting tired.
Chu Jiayun suddenly snapped back to reality and pushed Yu Sui away with some force: “Xinxin is looking for you.”
Yu Sui lowered her head, letting Chu Jiayun pass in front of her. Outside the door, Xinxin looked up at her slightly flushed mother, looking very confused.
“Mom, you and Auntie Yu were hiding and playing again without me.”
Chu Jiayun didn’t know whether to be grateful to her daughter for appearing just in time to rescue her or to remark that her insight was startling for such a young age.
She leaned down and kissed Xinxin’s face: “Why are you looking for Auntie Yu so urgently?”
Yu Sui walked up behind Chu Jiayun at that moment, smiling at Xinxin.
Xinxin pouted, crossing her small hands over her heart—actually, over her round little belly: “Auntie Yu said she would give me yogurt…”
Only then did Yu Sui remember that she had been about to go to the kitchen to drop off the bowl and grab the yogurt, but she had been distracted midway and forgot.
“Sorry, Xinxin. I was talking about things with Mom and forgot to tell you. Auntie Yu will go get the yogurt right now.”
After Yu Sui left, Chu Jiayun led Xinxin to the living room. Her heart still hadn’t fully settled. Yu Sui had made things clear just now; even if she hadn’t given an answer, she couldn’t pretend she didn’t know Yu Sui’s feelings.
Yu Sui cared about Xinxin, but she cared about her as well.
In the eyes of many, this might be the same issue. But in Chu Jiayun’s heart, these were two distinctly separate matters.
She and Yu Sui could both be good parents to Xinxin.
But whether she and Yu Sui could become qualified partners for each other was something she couldn’t be sure of.
What made her even more flustered was that when Yu Sui tried to get close just now, her body hadn’t been as overtly resistant as her brain.
Bai Jiling could not accept the fact that Yu Sui had entered Chu Jiayun’s life. In a moment of negligence, she had thought Yu Sui was just acting on a whim, and she never imagined Chu Jiayun would agree to her proximity.
Now, everything was moving toward a situation she hadn’t anticipated. Unfortunately, she was facing promotion pressure recently and couldn’t get away. If Yu Sui were to follow Chu Jiayun to Ancheng and live together day and night, even at her most optimistic, Bai Jiling couldn’t guarantee things would go as she hoped.
She couldn’t leave for Ancheng herself, and Chu Jiayun was difficult to persuade, so she could only start with Yu Sui. Back in her student days, Yu Sui’s behavior was arrogant and she loved making trouble—she was a recognized “troublemaker” in the eyes of the teachers.
The fact that she suddenly became quiet and well-behaved before graduating in her senior year was likely due to her differentiation. She went abroad after graduation and hadn’t been back in all these years, so Bai Jiling wasn’t sure what her current personality was like.
After careful consideration, she chose to start with Yu Mu. The Yu family’s business was now split into two main parts; the emerging industries were basically in Yu Mu’s hands, and Yu Zhongqing had high expectations and trust in her.
Yu Mu had always been the mediator between Yu Zhongqing and Yu Sui. Getting her to pressure Yu Sui and make her draw a clear line with Chu Jiayun was the most direct and effective method. Moreover, given Yu Mu’s respect for Chu Jiayun, even if things got a bit unpleasant, they wouldn’t truly have a fallout or cause a massive scene, allowing everyone to save face.
Yu Mu thought Bai Jiling was looking for her regarding the school anniversary and donations, so she specifically rescheduled a business summary meeting and drove to Jingcheng University.
She hadn’t expected the topic to be about Yu Sui.
“Are you saying Yu Sui is back in the country?”
Yu Mu didn’t quite believe the news. How could Yu Sui return to China without her knowing anything about it?
Bai Jiling handed a newly printed school anniversary brochure to Yu Mu: “I was surprised too. I heard you say recently that she insisted on doing design abroad. Because of the anniversary, we contacted many outstanding alumni and accidentally heard that Yu Sui is currently in the country.”
Yu Mu frowned. Hearing it from others wasn’t reliable, but if she checked herself, she would know the answer very quickly.
The reason she hadn’t checked before was that she trusted Yu Sui completely.
She sent a message to her secretary, telling her to look into Yu Sui’s recent movements. In front of Bai Jiling, she didn’t show too much emotion, pretending to look through the brochure seriously.
There was a significant section dedicated to the Yu family, and both her name and Yu Sui’s were prominently listed.
Bai Jiling had achieved her goal, so she didn’t dwell on the topic of Yu Sui and continued chatting about others.
When the conversation turned to Sheng Nanxi, Yu Mu took the initiative to make a request: “I heard Nanxi wants to find an internship in China after graduating. Director Bai, you have more resources in education; do you have a suitable place to recommend?”
“Wouldn’t it be easy for Sheng Nanxi to find a job?”
With the Sheng family’s power, it would be effortless.
“She doesn’t want to rely on her family, nor does she want to rely on connections.”
Bai Jiling understood: “I’ve always had a good impression of her. Her grades are excellent and she’s very ambitious. It’s just a pity about her differentiation.”
Yu Mu felt a bit uncomfortable hearing this. Although Omegas didn’t have the same innate advantages as Alphas in certain areas, one shouldn’t make judgments in advance because of that.
“Social roles are different, and the division of labor is different. Everyone can make their own contributions and efforts.”
Bai Jiling knew that although Yu Mu phrased it as asking for help, since she had spoken up, she definitely wanted a guarantee. Yu Mu wasn’t the type of person to ask for favors lightly if she didn’t have the leverage.
Bai Jiling needed to maintain a good relationship with the Yu family, as they were a major donor to the school. If she wanted to advance further in her administrative career, these social resources were indispensable.
“Don’t worry, I’ll take care of Sheng Nanxi’s internship.”
Yu Mu thought for a moment: “I hope Director Bai can keep this a secret. Don’t let her know it was because of me.”
“I won’t let her know.”
A few days later, the secretary informed Yu Mu of the investigation results. Yu Mu rarely lost her temper in the office.
She not only found out that Yu Sui had snuck back into the country and was staying in Licheng, but she also learned that she had been in close contact with Chu Jiayun during this time.
This left Yu Mu completely baffled, so she decided to go and ask for clarification in person.
By the time she appeared in front of Yu Sui, the three of them had only been in Ancheng for a short while. Following Yu Sui’s suggestion, they had rented a duplex in Ancheng. The space was large enough so that the three of them plus a domestic helper wouldn’t feel too crowded.
Once a suitable house was bought, Chu Jiayun could move in with her daughter, and Yu Sui would continue living in the rented house. Xinxin had grown used to having Auntie Yu at home; as soon as they reached the new house, she was busy “commanding” the two adults to set out her toys.
Yu Sui knew her return would be discovered sooner or later, but she hadn’t expected Yu Mu to appear at this time with such an attitude.
When Chu Jiayun called her, she was still holding the plastic wrap she had just taken off a toy. The expressions of the other two were very somber.
Yu Mu barely controlled her emotions, remaining politely restrained as she said to Chu Jiayun: “Instructor Chu, I have something to discuss with Yu Sui.”
Chu Jiayun knew that her showing up at the door meant it wasn’t just a casual visit: “You two talk.”
Yu Mu stood with a dark face, waiting for Yu Sui’s response.
“Give me ten minutes. We’ll go out to talk.”
Yu Mu didn’t step inside, but she could hear the movement within very clearly.
She heard Yu Sui coaxing Xinxin in a soft, gentle voice, telling her she had to go out for a bit and would come back to continue setting out the toys. She also heard Xinxin being reluctant, unwilling for Yu Sui to leave at that moment.
The child’s attachment—and even her minor tantrum—all indicated that Yu Sui’s relationship with them was no longer what it had been in the Netherlands.
Yu Sui had specifically snuck back from abroad, didn’t go home, told no one, and went straight to Licheng. Her purpose was now crystal clear. The things Yu Mu was unwilling to believe now seemed unnecessary to ask about.
Yu Sui found a restaurant not far from home and ordered a few dishes Yu Mu liked, but neither had any appetite.
“Don’t you think you owe me an explanation?”
Yu Sui lowered her eyes and remained mostly silent.
Yu Mu’s anger radiated across the table; her silence was her final restraint.
“My return this time was indeed for Chu Jiayun and Xinxin.”
Yu Mu’s eyes widened in disbelief: “Do you know what you’re saying?”
Yu Sui looked up calmly: “I know. And I know exactly what I’m doing.”
“So you intended to hide it from everyone, including me?”
“Sister, I didn’t want Dad to know because I didn’t want their lives to be affected. I admit I was wrong to hide it from you, but if you had known, wouldn’t you have stopped me?”
This time Yu Mu was direct, unlike her previous roundabout ways: “Of course I would have stopped you. I would never have let you get to this point.”
Yu Sui felt a bit sad, but this was all as she had anticipated, otherwise she wouldn’t have hidden it from everyone.
“But I can’t turn back anymore. I want to keep going.”
“Instructor Chu is very good and very charming; I admit that. But Xiao Sui, she isn’t suitable for you. She has a child. How can you go and destroy someone else’s…”
“She is raising the child alone. I’m not a home-wrecker.”
Yu Mu hadn’t expected Chu Jiayun to be a single mother and was stunned for a moment.
Then she recovered, but her stance didn’t change: “Even if she is alone, the two of you aren’t a match. Who has ever seen two Alphas raising a child together? If word gets out, how will you explain it to Dad? What will the shareholders do?”
Yu Sui was fed up with this, but she couldn’t reveal Chu Jiayun’s secret right now.
“It’s because there are so many things I can’t explain that I had to hide it from you.”
“Is this your solution to the problem?”
Yu Sui remained resolute: “Actually, this kind of problem isn’t a problem for me at all. It’s because you guys think it’s a problem that I chose a way that’s best for everyone.”
Chu Jiayun was somewhat distracted. Yu Mu’s sudden visit meant she must have found out something. She wasn’t sure how much Yu Mu knew, but she seemed to care more about Yu Sui’s attitude.
Xinxin sensed that her mother had something on her mind and obediently took out the toys herself. She wasn’t tall enough, so she could only lay them out on the floor, but she didn’t push her mother to put them on the shelves for her.
Yu Sui was out for about an hour. Chu Jiayun had thought she would be back later.
When she saw Yu Sui in the living room, she noticed there wasn’t much worry on her face, as if Yu Mu’s arrival hadn’t caused much pressure.
Yu Sui saw the repressed questioning in Chu Jiayun’s eyes and took the initiative to smile: “My sister is tired. I told her to go back to the hotel and rest first.”
