Chapter 51
That day in the kitchen, Yu Sui used her self-created “dark cuisine” theory and a sudden, soft kiss to dissolve Chu Jiayun’s outermost line of defense. Chu Jiayun tacitly allowed Yu Sui to stay by her side and in her life, and permitted her to take on the other half of the responsibility for caring for Xinxin.
However, this did not mean that all the issues between them had been resolved, nor did it mean Yu Sui could already openly appear in the “parents” column.
But Chu Jiayun could not bring herself to say harsh words. After all, she saw how well Yu Sui treated Xinxin and understood how cruel it was to deprive a mother of her legal status.
Seeing her still frowning, Yu Sui sensed that she didn’t yet view this as a perfect solution.
“I’m not trying to take a shortcut. To earn your recognition, I will still put in one hundred percent effort.” Yu Sui lightly tapped the materials. “But the most important thing right now is to pass the parent interview smoothly. We can’t let Xinxin miss this opportunity because of us.”
Chu Jiayun looked up at her, clearly weighing her words.
“So, I can act as a ‘temporary parent’.”
“Temporary parent?”
A flash of bitterness crossed Yu Sui’s lips, but she hid it quickly. In a time like this, Chu Jiayun’s difficulties were certainly greater than hers; it was no time to dwell on petty feelings.
“You can claim to the outside world that I am pursuing you, and that I am a legitimate candidate under your consideration.”
“Can you please not joke at a time like this?”
“I’m not joking. I am seriously pursuing you, and you are evaluating me.”
Chu Jiayun found herself unable to argue. If Yu Sui chose to see it that way, it wasn’t exactly wrong.
“But they require dual parents. I’m afraid the school won’t accept it.”
Yu Sui could see that Chu Jiayun was acting out of anxiety for Xinxin; her judgment was not at its usual professional level.
“The interview evaluates ‘family stability.’ They don’t strictly require the parents to be the original biological set. As long as our current relationship is stable enough to prove we can provide an environment and resources no less than other similar families, it will be fine.”
Chu Jiayun had indeed been overthinking it. Yu Sui’s words snapped her back to reality. This was indeed a “good way” to solve the immediate problem.
“We can explain it to the teachers, but how do we tell Xinxin?”
Yu Sui shrugged. “Just tell her the truth.”
Chu Jiayun sighed. “Xinxin is still small, and she has always believed her other mother is in a very far-off place.”
“I mean, tell Xinxin that I am pursuing her mother.”
Chu Jiayun was astonished. In her concept, a three-year-old had no need to know about the romantic entanglements of adults.
“Jiayun, I already exist in your lives. Do you think Xinxin won’t know just because we don’t say anything?”
Ever since that firm declaration of her feelings by the refrigerator, Yu Sui had placed herself on completely equal footing with Chu Jiayun. She liked her—not out of guilt or regret, and certainly not as compensation. She liked her because, through their daily interactions, the spark that had existed that summer had reignited into an uncontrollable flame.
Before Yu Sui appeared, Chu Jiayun’s plan was to live quietly with her daughter in an unknown small town and tell her the truth slowly as she grew up. “Avoidance” was her main principle, which inevitably meant losing opportunities—both for herself and for Xinxin.
Since they had now chosen to face things actively, her previous mindset had to change accordingly. Chu Jiayun took a deep breath and decided to talk to Yu Sui properly about the past.
About her previous disguises and deceptions.
To her surprise, Yu Sui wasn’t particularly shocked after hearing it, though she was curious about the inhibitor she used. “An inhibitor that strong sounds a bit against human nature. Can those things really help people?”
“That’s probably why they have never existed publicly.”
“But what was the developer’s purpose? If it does more harm than good, why develop it at all?”
“It’s a phased product of scientific development. Useless now doesn’t mean useless in the future.” Those were Bai Shiqian’s original words, but at the time, they were already very useful to Chu Jiayun. It was just that her situation was unique and didn’t fall into the category of an ordinary person in need of help.
Yu Sui always felt that relying on drugs to forcibly suppress or transform basic human attributes went against the laws of nature and wasn’t necessarily a good development trend.
Seeing that Yu Sui’s focus was different from what she expected, Chu Jiayun finally couldn’t help but ask, “Did you know all along?”
“Know what?”
Chu Jiayun looked at her deeply. Yu Sui tried to act casual but couldn’t divert the topic.
“You knew all along that I am an Omega?”
Yu Sui coughed slightly. “Sort of.”
In the past, she could have denied it. But now she wanted to walk a path with Chu Jiayun, so honesty was a sincerity both parties had to offer. Since Chu Jiayun had taken the initiative to tell her about the disguise at the base, Yu Sui shouldn’t hide the fact that she had known the truth for a long time. Only through authenticity could they truly close the distance between them.
Chu Jiayun had guessed as much from the reaction. She hadn’t expected that after all her painstaking efforts to disguise herself, even at the cost of her health, she would be seen through so easily by a student.
She felt a bit dejected and sighed softly. “It seems my disguise was a failure.”
“Actually, it was a success. No one else knew except me. Look at my sister; even now she stubbornly believes you’re an Alpha. When she lectured me last time, she repeatedly emphasized that two Alphas raising a child would face public criticism.”
Chu Jiayun had worried about this before. Although society doesn’t always discuss ABO attributes openly, they have long since permeated every aspect—social resource allocation, division of labor, and the stereotypes people have. These aren’t things that can be easily changed by laws or appeals alone.
If she wanted to raise Xinxin with Yu Sui, her identity had to be readjusted. Other places were manageable, but at Jingcheng University, she couldn’t just brush it off. To help her get the job at the base back then, Bai Jiling had helped modify her records and worked behind the scenes during the recruitment.
Chu Jiayun didn’t want to drag her friend down. She made that decision back then for her sister. Bai Jiling was forced into those dishonorable actions to help her; she couldn’t bite the hand that fed her.
However, Chu Jiayun also had her own confusion. The weak want to hide their identity to avoid showing vulnerability. But Yu Sui was an SS-class, the typical strong person everyone hoped for. Why was she always unwilling to go public?
“The tallest tree catches the most wind. Do you really think being ‘the strong one’ is easy? Everyone treats you like a prize; you get hassled everywhere. It’s better to be an ordinary person.”
Chu Jiayun smiled. Yu Sui’s perspective was quite transparent. She thought of Bai Jiling’s striving and constant self-discipline for fear of falling behind; it was a stark contrast to Yu Sui.
But no matter how hard Bai Jiling worked, she stopped at S-class. Yu Sui possessed an innate advantage that others could never surpass. For example, her pheromones could overwhelm and dominate everything.
That summer, Chu Jiayun relied on Yu Sui’s pheromones to ease her pain and struggle. And because of Yu Sui’s pheromones, she wasn’t easily disturbed by other Alphas during special periods. Over the years, with all her heart on her daughter, she barely felt any special physical needs. On the rare occasions she encountered a difficult period, she used regular inhibitors.
Even if it was only a brief moment of pleasure, only one indulgence, the mark Yu Sui left on her was deep enough. Even now, she only reacted to Yu Sui’s pheromones.
Chu Jiayun joked half-seriously, “Then why don’t you pretend to be an Omega?”
Yu Sui shook her head, disagreeing with the suggestion. This was actually the most clever way—after all, only the two of them knew who was the Alpha and who was the Omega behind closed doors.
After Chu Jiayun said it, she herself was stunned. Subconsciously, she had already categorized Yu Sui’s future as her own; otherwise, if Yu Sui dated others in the future, the secret of pretending to be an Omega would definitely be exposed.
“I don’t want to attract jealousy, but that doesn’t mean I’m afraid of trouble.” Yu Sui looked at Chu Jiayun and said firmly, “We’ll handle the identity issue slowly. I will protect you and Xinxin. I can take on more for both of you.”
After some discussion, they decided to act separately. Chu Jiayun would find a way to fix the base records, while Yu Sui intended to use her family’s resources to settle the public opinion.
The first person she thought of wasn’t Yu Mu, but Sheng Nanxi, who had just returned to the country.
“You snuck back to enjoy yourself and only just thought of me? A-Sui, is this really okay?”
Yu Sui apologized sincerely. “I didn’t ignore you on purpose. Too much has happened lately; I’ve had my hands full.”
“So when are you coming back to Jingcheng?”
“Nanxi, I can’t go back.”
Sheng Nanxi stopped writing her thesis and ceased her banter. “A-Sui, what exactly have you been doing from Licheng to Ancheng during this time?”
Yu Sui realized she would need Sheng Nanxi’s help later, so hiding things would be counterproductive. She composed herself and gave a warm warning: “What I’m about to say might be a bit of a shock. Prepare yourself.”
“We’ve known each other for so long. Haven’t you shocked me enough already?” As Yu Sui’s best friend, Sheng Nanxi had indeed seen many “big events”; she was quite confident.
Yu Sui licked her lips and summoned her courage. “I am pursuing Chu Jiayun, and I’ve decided to stay in Ancheng to take care of her daughter with her.” She paused and added, “Our daughter.”
The other end of the line went deathly silent. If not for the sound of breathing, Yu Sui would have thought Sheng Nanxi had dropped the phone. She waited a while without hearing a response and asked tentatively, “Nanxi, are you okay?”
“Honestly, I’m not. I’m a bit stunned by what you just said.”
“Acceptance takes time, but this is my current reality. I didn’t want to lie to you.”
Sheng Nanxi’s voice trembled slightly in a final struggle. “The Chu Jiayun you’re talking about… is she the Instructor Chu I know?” After all, with so many people in the country, there could be others with the same name.
“It’s her.”
Sheng Nanxi closed her eyes and asked, “When you asked me about children last time, was it also because of Instructor Chu’s daughter?”
“Yes.”
Beep, beep, beep… Sheng Nanxi hung up the phone. Yu Sui frowned.
