After Transmigrating as a Beta, I Got Messed Up with an Alpha (BL) - Chapter 32
“U-type drug,” a blocking agent banned from public sale. Regardless of whether it’s an Alpha or an Omega, taking it completely blocks the pheromones in their body, making them appear just like an ordinary person.
The reason it’s banned is due to its extremely severe side effects. Mild cases may result in chaos during heat or Rut cycles, as well as lethargy, fatigue, loss of appetite, and an abnormally weakened constitution. More seriously, it could lead to a permanent loss of pheromones, truly turning one into an ordinary person for life.
Furthermore, Alphas and Omegas who lose their pheromones due to U-type drugs are considered even “lesser” than Betas.
Pei Yule frowned, browsing through the information regarding the “U-type drug.” The more he read, the tighter his brow became.
During the morning, he had overheard the conversation between Huo Juan and Xu Yanxi. Initially, he only half-understood because the terminology was foreign to him, but looking at this information now, the U-type drug was clearly nothing good. So why was Huo Juan so determined to take it? Even Xu Yanxi didn’t approve.
Pei Yule thought for a moment and then tried searching for “X-supplement.” However, despite trying several search methods, he couldn’t find any information on what it was. Things that can’t be found on the internet are either classified data or simply have no records uploaded yet. Either way, it felt wrong to Pei Yule.
He recalled Xu Yanxi saying, “If the X-supplement isn’t strong enough, we should change to something else; the U-type drug has too many risks…” From this, it was evident that the function of the X-supplement was likely similar to the U-type drug—both were probably pheromone blocking agents.
Was he willing to take a U-type drug with such massive risks just to erase his pheromones… because Huo Juan’s pheromones had spiraled so far out of control that he couldn’t manage them without medication?
Images flashed through Pei Yule’s mind: the Alpha sitting on the floor expressionlessly injecting suppressants, and earlier, that flicker of unbearable restraint on his face when he pushed him away.
Huo Juan’s condition—pheromone disorder—was something likely only Xu Yanxi knew about in the whole school. Now, he was added to that list.
The first Rut, the first loss of control, the second loss of control… then Huo Juan started using blocking agents to seal his pheromones. And this time, Huo Juan left halfway to take an injection. Looking back now, whenever Huo Juan suddenly developed symptoms, wasn’t it always when they were together?
Scattered clues gradually connected, vaguely forming a structural outline. A suspicion blossomed in Pei Yule’s heart, but he wasn’t quite certain.
The next day, school resumed. Likely due to the lingering exhaustion from the sports meet, many students looked lazy and sluggish even after a day of rest. During class, half the room was slumped over their desks, the air thick with the decadent atmosphere of a Monday morning after a wild weekend.
It wasn’t until the chime of the bell that those slumped over lazily propped themselves up, yawning repeatedly.
Pei Yule glanced at the seat next to him. His desk-mate was also face-down on the desk, sleeping soundly. Huo Juan’s behavior wasn’t due to post-sports fatigue; he was like this every day, frankly treating the classroom as a bedroom. He never seemed to listen to a lecture, yet his grades were always top of the class. This was likely the most infuriating trait of a top-tier Alpha.
This Alpha still remembered the “Three Rules”; he basically didn’t harass him during class or breaks, content to just sleep on his own.
Pei Yule watched that head, which hadn’t moved for half a day, then looked away. He happened to see Xu Yanxi stand up and walk out of the classroom. He quickly gathered his books and, with subtle movements so as not to wake his desk-mate, stood up and followed him out.
Once the footsteps faded, the “sleeping” Huo Juan moved slightly. His dark, wide-awake eyes peered through the gap of his arms, watching Pei Yule’s departing back.
Likely… going to find the Omega from the next class again.
His deep, dark eyes watched Pei Yule until he was out of sight, and even then, he didn’t look away.
Pei Yule was oblivious. He wasn’t looking for Fei Yisa; he was chasing after Xu Yanxi. Having started ten seconds late, and given that Xu Yanxi was taller with longer legs, he had to jog just to keep up as the other man wove through the corridors. It didn’t look like he was going to the restroom or to find food. Pei Yule finally spotted him turning a corner and sped up.
As he rounded the bend, an arm suddenly barred his way. He was moving so fast he couldn’t stop and bumped straight into it.
“Uh…”
Out of the corner of his eye, Pei Yule saw the arm that had forced his sudden stop. He hadn’t quite regained his balance when he heard a playful laugh from above: “I wondered who it was. It’s ‘Brother Pei’.”
Ever since he’d claimed to be older, the title “Brother” had stuck.
Xu Yanxi steadied Pei Yule, letting him stand firm. He asked leisurely, “What are you following me for—”
Before he could finish, Pei Yule grabbed Xu Yanxi and dragged him into the space beneath a nearby staircase.
“Hey, hey, what are you doing?” Xu Yanxi’s back hit the wall, pinned there by Pei Yule’s arm. He arched an eyebrow in surprise; he never expected to be “wall-pinned” (kabedon) by Pei Yule. If Huo Juan saw this, it would be trouble. Especially since his pheromones had been unstable lately, making him even more difficult to deal with than usual.
Pei Yule was acting on impulse, but since he’d already dragged the man in, he couldn’t back out. He checked the surroundings; since they were in a blind spot under the stairs, they likely wouldn’t be seen. He looked back and whispered to Xu Yanxi: “Xu Yanxi, I have something to ask you.”
Xu Yanxi narrowed his eyes. After hanging around Huo Juan for a while, the boy’s courage had certainly grown. He used to avoid him whenever possible, but today he dared to drag him under the stairs. With anyone else, Xu Yanxi would have started teasing, but this was the “little darling” Huo Juan had his eye on. Unless he had a death wish, he had to be honest: “What is it?”
Even in a secluded spot, walls have ears. Pei Yule dropped his voice so low it was almost a breath: “It’s about Huo Juan. He lost control during his Rut, right? And he lost control at his house before. I wanted to ask…” He hesitated, then steeled himself: “Those two times… was it because of me?”
You couldn’t blame him for suspecting. It wasn’t that he wanted to be narcissistic; it was just too much of a coincidence. On the day of Huo Juan’s Rut, Xu Yanxi had told him to just wait a moment. Based on what he knew of Xu Yanxi—who seemed flaky but never truly put people in danger—he must have believed Huo Juan would recover normally after “a moment.” This was clearly based on past experience.
Yet, Huo Juan didn’t recover as expected. Instead, it got worse. He wouldn’t even let Xu Yanxi near, but he let Pei Yule close, and he even bit himself to suppress his impulses.
And at Huo Juan’s house, everything was normal until they started the contact therapy. Suddenly, Huo Juan’s pheromones spiraled out of control. If he hadn’t bitten himself to regain his reason, no one knows what would have happened.
…Pei Yule had been there for both losses of control.
Add to that yesterday. Huo Juan was fine, but during their contact, his pheromones suddenly started leaking. If he hadn’t taken the suppressant in time, would that dangerous scene from the villa have repeated itself?
Too many coincidences form a pattern. Huo Juan started using blocking agents to spare him from the pheromones, and then asked Xu Yanxi for a banned drug with severe side effects. Why would he even consider such a drug unless it was absolutely necessary?
Pei Yule wasn’t stupid. Huo Juan asked Xu Yanxi for the drug, so Xu Yanxi must know the extent of the situation. That’s why he sought him out; he needed to know if his guess was correct.
“…”
Xu Yanxi listened to the question. Looking at Pei Yule’s serious expression, for a moment, he wanted to brush it off with a lie. However, for the sake of the future, he didn’t deceive him. Instead, he asked: “Why do you think that?”
Pei Yule said: “Everything points to it.” Including Huo Juan’s claim that contact with him brought “calm,” and how strangely he acted after every session. Pei Yule wasn’t a hopeless idiot. Being the one closest to Huo Juan, he was the one most likely to notice the changes.
“You’re overthinking,” Xu Yanxi shrugged. “Ah-Juan told me you can calm him down. He probably said the same to you, right? If you don’t believe me, you should believe him.”
Pei Yule hit the nail on the head: “If that’s truly the case, why did he almost lose control again yesterday?” If I really can ‘calm’ him down.
Damn. How did he know Huo Juan almost lost control again yesterday? No wonder that guy insisted on the U-type drug; could it be the X-supplement couldn’t even last a single day?
Xu Yanxi’s eyebrows shot up. He stared at Pei Yule, truly baffled. No matter how he looked at him, he was just a Beta. Just a Beta. How did he have the ability to make Huo Juan lose control so frequently? Then again, if he knew what charm could make a top-tier Alpha lose control, he might fall for it too. Luckily, he didn’t.
Xu Yanxi’s thoughts spun. He took a breath and exhaled slowly, deciding not to cover for Huo Juan anymore. Honestly, he didn’t agree with Huo Juan’s methods, but he couldn’t stop his decisions. Some things, perhaps, only Pei Yule could do.
“I can’t tell you too much in detail; Ah-Juan would be mad at me.” Xu Yanxi pushed Pei Yule back slightly to avoid being too close, preventing his own pheromones from rubbing off on the boy. Huo Juan knew exactly what his scent was, and he didn’t want a conflict. Having gained a few steps of space, he continued: “I suggest you ask him directly.” If he’ll even answer.
Pei Yule was worried about the same thing: “He won’t tell me.” If he were willing to speak, he wouldn’t be pretending everything was fine.
Xu Yanxi’s eyes darted, and he suddenly asked: “If you knew the truth, what would you do about it?”
Pei Yule was stunned. He hadn’t expected that question. He thought for a moment and answered: “Even if I can’t do anything, being in the know is better than being kept in the dark.” For example, if his guess was correct, he would need to adopt a different attitude toward Huo Juan.
Xu Yanxi shook his head: “If I were you, I wouldn’t care so much. Huo Juan is the only one with the problem; you just need to lend a hand when he asks. You don’t need to involve yourself in anything else.”
Pei Yule said crossly: “Precisely because I am not you, I can’t do that.” Furthermore, it had already affected him. If Huo Juan lost control every time, he’d have to reconsider their agreement—both for Huo Juan’s sake and for his own safety.
And one more thing… he didn’t want to see the Huo Juan from yesterday, with that cold face, injecting suppressants.
Oh? Bold words.
Xu Yanxi wasn’t angry; instead, he found it very interesting. Pei Yule always surprised him. His fingers twitched with the urge to ruffle the boy’s hair. He didn’t just think it; he did it, reaching out for Pei Yule’s head, murmuring: “Just a mere Beta…” Quite bold.
A hand suddenly reached out and clamped onto his wrist.
Both were shocked. They looked over to see that Huo Juan had arrived at some unknown point, standing there expressionlessly. Because he wasn’t releasing any pheromones, they hadn’t noticed him at all!
Huo Juan slowly released Xu Yanxi’s hand. His dark eyes swept over the two of them. He asked slowly: “What… are you doing here?”
What else? Talking about you.
Xu Yanxi was caught between laughter and tears, amazed that he would one day be the object of his childhood friend’s jealousy. Seeing that the subject of the discussion had arrived, he decided to stop meddling. Let them do what they want; he didn’t want Huo Juan to be jealous of him—that would be too ridiculous.
“If you want to know something, ask him directly!”
But since Huo Juan was already jealous, Xu Yanxi decided to lean into the wind. Right in front of Huo Juan, he leaned close to Pei Yule’s ear and whispered a sentence at lightning speed: “If you think you can handle the answer, I support you asking! Otherwise, pretend you don’t know—that’s best for you.”
Before Huo Juan could react, he had already backed away, waving a hand at the two of them: “I’m not playing with you two anymore. Suit yourselves.” He left that final line and turned to leave briskly. If I don’t leave, I’m afraid Huo Juan will punch me.
This left Pei Yule and Huo Juan in a brief, heavy silence. After a while, Huo Juan turned his gaze to Pei Yule, saying the same thing as Xu Yanxi in a slow voice: “If you want to know anything, come and ask me directly.”
Don’t go to others. And don’t get too close to them. If that person hadn’t been Xu Yanxi, but someone else… perhaps he wouldn’t have acted this calmly.
Looking at Huo Juan’s expression—which was gloomier than usual—Xu Yanxi’s words flashed through Pei Yule’s mind. If I really ask, is the answer… something I can handle? And if I can’t, what then? Xu Yanxi’s words told him there was no turning back. If he knew the answer, would he have to bear everything Huo Juan told him?
In that instant, Pei Yule felt like shrinking away. If he really couldn’t handle it, then maybe it was better not to know. Maybe Xu Yanxi was right: knowing nothing was best.
Yet, just as he was about to gloss over it and deflect Huo Juan’s question with a laugh, Pei Yule suddenly remembered that scene in the bedroom yesterday. The scattered syringes and pills, the indifferent, cold Alpha mechanically injecting the suppressant… and that rare, slightly weak, soothing smile.
Pei Yule swallowed. His heart began to pound erratically. He took a deep breath, didn’t let himself hesitate any longer, and asked one of the questions he needed to know: “Huo Juan, why do you want to take ‘U-type drugs’?”
Before Huo Juan could answer, Pei Yule steeled himself and continued: “—Is it because of me?”
Pandora’s box had been opened by his own hand. Next—would he choose to sink together, or would he pull away?
