After Transmigrating as a Beta, I Got Messed Up with an Alpha (BL) - Chapter 39
One bite wasn’t enough.
He wanted more.
The beast had grown fangs.
In the moment danger descended, the loss of control during the Rut caused Huo Juan’s pheromones to fluctuate violently. With a click, the black wristband device automatically injected a suppressant containing a sedative.
Huo Juan’s body slumped forward. Pei Yule, whose fingertip was still throbbing with pain, instinctively reached out to catch him, preventing him from face-planting off the sofa.
The high-heat body pressed against his skin, so hot it felt like it could burn him. But at least he was unconscious; there shouldn’t be any more danger.
Pei Yule, cradling his aching fingertip, spoke to the approaching person in the black uniform: “I’m sorry, please call a doctor. He’s in Rut…”
A soft chuckle rang out.
Pei Yule looked over and realized that behind the black uniform, another person was walking leisurely toward them—the young Chairman. Looking closer, he noticed that almost all the Alphas in the hall were down. Those still standing with flushed faces were likely Omegas.
The Student Council, which had vanished earlier, reappeared and began orderly arranging for doctors to move the sedated Alphas.
Bian Chuan was among them, but the few people Pei Yule recognized were nowhere to be found. They seemed to have been missing from the start—where had they gone? He couldn’t help but feel worried.
Facing the young Chairman, Pei Yule felt an inexplicable nervousness. The Omega before him had retracted every bit of his seductive pheromones; he didn’t have that oppressive aura anymore. Looking at him now, he just seemed like a friendly and gentle senior.
However, this “senior” didn’t speak very politely.
“The Alphas of this year are quite weak,” Xu Yanhui said. His voice was very mild, making him sound like a good-tempered person. However, his words weren’t quite so gentle, carrying a hint of light mockery mixed with a smile. “Hardly anyone could resist the pheromones; none of them got high scores.”
“…”
Pei Yule didn’t know what to say. He felt the comment wasn’t meant for him. Remembering Huo Juan said this man was the Chairman—a big shot—he was inevitably a bit flustered. He steeled himself to greet him: “…Hello, Chairman.”
Xu Yanhui gave an “mm” in response. “Huo Juan’s raw potential is actually quite good. It’s a pity he just happened to hit his Rut.” He signaled to the black uniforms to move Huo Juan to a room, instructing them to be careful. “Otherwise, Xiao Xi will be cross later. That child gets more short-tempered as he gets older.”
Xiao Xi? Could it be Xu Yanxi?
Pei Yule was dazed. The only “Xi” close to Huo Juan was Xu Yanxi. Based on the Chairman’s tone, why did he call Xu Yanxi so affectionately? A doubt flashed through his mind, but seeing the black uniforms about to take Huo Juan away, he didn’t have time to analyze it. He moved his feet, instinctively wanting to follow, but Xu Yanhui grabbed him by the collar.
“Don’t go.”
Being stopped, Pei Yule realized he had intended to follow without even thinking. He stopped dejectedly, watching Huo Juan being carried away out of sight. His heart felt unsettled; he couldn’t deny that he was actually worried.
Xu Yanhui glanced at his fingertip and said pointedly, “A Rut lasts five to seven days. You’d best not get near him right now.”
He’d already been bitten; if he were to wake up and have the boy stimulating him again, it wouldn’t be very pleasant. As the head of the school, there were some things he had to stop when he saw them.
Pei Yule understood the meaning and scratched his head. “Uh, okay…” He stopped talking because the young Chairman leaned in, staring at him from a very close distance.
Being scrutinized by those bright eyes made Pei Yule uneasy. Remembering how he nearly lost control because of this person earlier—a feeling that wasn’t exactly great—he instinctively took a step back. “Chairman?”
“So he’s a Beta…” Xu Yanhui murmured cryptically. Hearing light footsteps behind him, he stopped and turned to look.
Bian Chuan and two Council members walked over. “Chairman, everything has been handled.”
Looking around, the hall had indeed been cleared. Xu Yanhui nodded in satisfaction. “Very good.” He looked at Bian Chuan’s calm face and remembered that while the Student Council had the privilege of not participating, the person before him was also an Alpha.
He smiled. “Bian Chuan, do you want to give it a try? I’ll give you extra credit.” He wanted to see if that calm face could be made to crack.
Bian Chuan remained unmoved and shook his head in refusal. Then he turned to Pei Yule: “Although the gala hasn’t officially ended, things are a bit chaotic today. You may leave now. The Student Council has arranged transportation home. Are you heading back?” He paused, then added: “You may also stay.”
Pei Yule opened his mouth. He was still worried about Huo Juan, but he knew he couldn’t help by staying. He hesitated for a moment and nodded: “Then I’ll trouble you.”
The Student Council’s efficiency was staggering. In less than five minutes, he was in a car, and fifteen minutes later, he was home.
Returning from a crowded, lively gala to a home where he was all alone brought a sense of emptiness. Pei Yule stood blankly in the hall for a while before moving to the bathroom to wash away the scents on his body.
Now that he was alone, he realized he was covered in a mess of different pheromones. The strongest among them was the scent of cold cypress. Because they had been so tightly entangled, the scent lingered stubbornly, even though its owner was gone.
Pei Yule entered the bathroom. Passing the large mirror over the sink, something caught his eye. He gasped and leaned into the mirror, forcefully pulling down the high collar of his robe to his Adam’s apple.
His neck was covered in a dense ring of tooth marks!
Remembering when and by whose hand this was done, Pei Yule didn’t want to look at the mirror anymore. He crouched down and held his head, not wanting to accept reality.
Did I really come back with a whole ring of tooth marks on my neck?! In front of all those people!
He remembered going to eat and strolling around afterward. Huo Juan hadn’t even warned him; he’d just let him wander around with his neck covered in bite marks. He… he was going to kill Huo Juan.
Pei Yule wiped his face, pushing away his faint worry. He stood up, stripped off his clothes, and turned on the shower. As the water drenched him, his fingertip felt a bit strange under the hot water. He looked down and saw another ring of tooth marks there.
Right, Huo Juan had bitten this, too. And now that he remembered, the man had seemed to lick it afterward.
“…”
Ruts are a real pain.
Pei Yule clenched his fist, uncontrollably remembering the sensation of being licked. He shook his head violently to stop the thought, turning the shower up and scrubbing his neck hard, trying to wash away the lingering sensation.
He ended up scrubbing too hard. By the time he came out, his entire neck was bright red, hot, and tingling, emphasizing each of the deep and shallow tooth marks… He looked away from the mirror; he truly couldn’t bear to look.
He climbed into bed dejectedly, pulling the duvet over his head and wrapping himself like a silkworm cocoon. He decided. He still had to avoid him.
Despite that decision, Huo Juan, who had fallen into his Rut, didn’t come to class for a whole week. He was nowhere to be found. This made Pei Yule feel like his “avoidance” was a punch into a bale of cotton; he felt like he’d somehow lost.
On the eighth day, Huo Juan still didn’t show. Pei Yule thought that thanks to Huo Juan’s superior grades and the school’s relaxed attendance policy, the guy had missed class countless times without failing.
On the ninth day, Huo Juan was still missing. This made Pei Yule, who had found the past eight days quite relaxing, start to feel restless. Nothing happened, right? Come to think of it, why was he worrying about Huo Juan? Their best relationship was no relationship. This was fine; he didn’t have to deal with Huo Juan anymore. He could just let it fade, graduate, and never see him again. He managed to calm himself down with this logic, but by the tenth day… the eleventh… the twelfth…
When Huo Juan still hadn’t come to school, he finally couldn’t sit still. Not only was Huo Juan missing, but Xu Yanxi was often absent too, only showing his face occasionally before vanishing.
Pei Yule hadn’t thought to look for him initially, but now that he couldn’t find Xu Yanxi either, the unease in his heart grew. He remembered Huo Juan had pheromone disorder. That wasn’t a minor illness for Alphas or Omegas. The Rut should have ended a week ago, yet Huo Juan was still gone. This led to some dark thoughts, and without Xu Yanxi to clarify, he couldn’t stop his imagination.
Something didn’t really happen, did it…
With these grim suspicions, Saturday arrived.
Fei Yisa had invited him to a new dessert shop early that morning. Pei Yule didn’t want to sit at home overthinking, so he went. Although Fei Yisa was an Omega who acted like an Alpha, his love for sweets was very “Omega-like.” Pei Yule watched him polish off three incredibly sweet cakes and swallowed. He silently poked at his own chocolate cheesecake.
Fei Yisa was attacking his fourth cake when he noticed Pei Yule hadn’t even taken a bite. “Le-le, what’s on your mind? You look so gloomy.”
Pei Yule’s spoon paused. “Nothing.”
Fei Yisa held the spoon in his mouth and reached out to smooth Pei Yule’s brow. “Eating sweets with a face like a bitter melon ruins my appetite.”
…But you’ve already eaten four cakes. Pei Yule hesitated, put down his spoon, and stopped pretending. He frowned and said: “I was thinking… Huo Juan hasn’t been to school for a long time.”
Fei Yisa didn’t think much of it: “Isn’t that good? You were avoiding him anyway.”
Pei Yule rubbed his nose. “That’s different.” Avoiding him was one thing; him not showing up was another. Since Fei Yisa didn’t know about the pheromone disorder, Pei Yule couldn’t say much. He just said: “I’m worried something happened.”
Fei Yisa remained unconcerned. “What could happen? Do you know how massive his family is? If something happened to him, it would be major news. Don’t worry, he’s probably just tied up with something.”
Hearing this, Pei Yule felt a bit more at ease. “Is that so?”
“Yeah. Even though we’re in different classes, he’s always missed school a lot. It’s an old habit of his.”
This made Pei Yule even more worried. Could it be the pheromone disorder is why he always missed school? Because no one knew he was sick, they didn’t know the reason. The mortality rate for that condition wasn’t low…
Seeing Pei Yule’s worry, Fei Yisa chewed his spoon and said: “Why don’t you go find him?”
Pei Yule paused and shook his head: “…No need.” He knew where Huo Juan lived, but for him to take the initiative to find him… that was too much. He hadn’t forgotten the man’s feelings for him.
Fei Yisa snapped his fingers. “Then stop thinking about it.” He respected Pei Yule’s wishes. If those two were going to happen, it wouldn’t be because an outsider pushed them. “Alright, don’t think about it. Let’s go get fruit milk tea at Tian Mi Yuan later; it’s delicious.”
Pei Yule was shocked: “You can still drink?” After all those cakes… He looked at Fei Yisa’s slender frame and wondered where all those calories went. Do Omegas just not gain weight?
Fei Yisa bragged: “I can drink two cups!” He finished his fifth cake in a few bites. “Fruit milk tea helps cut through the sweetness. Let’s go, let’s go.”
Pei Yule was dragged along. “Why didn’t Shen Pin come?” If Shen Pin were here, he’d probably limit Fei Yisa’s sugar intake.
“Probably busy with something,” Fei Yisa said. “Forget him, let’s get milk tea!”
Pei Yule tried to steer him toward real food: “Yisa, I want Chinese food…”
Fei Yisa decided: “Then we’ll get Chinese food after the milk tea!”
“No, let’s not…” Pei Yule broke into a sweat. Fortunately, Fei Yisa’s phone rang. He frowned and answered. After a few minutes, he hung up and looked at Pei Yule apologetically. “Sorry, dear Comrade Le, my mother is looking for me. I have to go home.”
Pei Yule felt a massive sense of relief. “Go ahead!”
After Fei Yisa left, Pei Yule sat in the cake shop alone for a while. Once the sweet feeling in his stomach faded, he stood up to go home.
As midwinter approached, the weather grew colder. He pulled his coat tight against the wind. Remembering the date, he pulled out his phone. He froze when he saw the screen.
Ah… Tomorrow was his birthday. Although this body was eighteen, he would actually be twenty-one tomorrow.
Back in his old life, his family of four would always celebrate with him. This year, he was alone. Pei Yule pursed his lips, pushing away his homesickness. He had to live a good life so his parents wouldn’t worry. Even if they didn’t know about his life here, as long as he was healthy and happy, that was their biggest wish.
He took a deep breath, slapped his cheeks to cheer himself up, and was about to move forward when he saw a tall Alpha standing across the street. He didn’t know how long the man had been watching him.
Seeing that he had finally noticed, Huo Juan locked eyes with him and stepped across the crosswalk, walking toward him step by step.
Pei Yule was frozen in place. He stood still until Huo Juan reached him and pulled him into a hug. He didn’t move, standing stiffly as the man held him tight and buried his face in his neck to take a deep breath.
He didn’t refuse.
Because… he had lost a lot of weight.
