- Chapter 23 - Writing a Song for You
These days, Ji Mian was naturally busy preparing for her career.
She went to He Yue’s company, and the two discussed music theory extensively.
Ji Mian had graduated from a music academy in her previous life and had worked as a postgraduate teacher in music classes, so she could handle the music theory knowledge completely.
He Yue showed an astonished expression, “I thought you only knew how to dance. I never expected your vocal ability to be this remarkable. This is truly eye-opening.”
Ji Mian chuckled, “Teacher He, you flatter me. I just touched upon it briefly.”
He Yue: “…” Just touched upon it briefly…
“Well, let’s get straight to it. We’ll start producing the music and lyrics…”
“Teacher He, wait a moment.” Ji Mian smiled, “I have some lyrics I wrote before. Could you take a look?”
The songs in her previous world were mostly written and composed by Ji Mian herself. Her most popular hits, Lant with You and Lalalala Style, had been famous across the country. She wondered if people in this world would like them.
He Yue praised them after reading. He said with a trembling voice, “You are truly a genius. Do you have a tune? I think you should finish composing it yourself to elevate this song to its peak.”
Ji Mian replied modestly, “Teacher He Yue, you think too highly of me.”
These days were mostly spent working on the production, and Ji Mian only saw Xu Zhixia’s messages late at night.
The thousands of messages were like a torrential downpour.
It took Ji Mian a long time to read through them.
—Why aren’t you replying to me?!
—Ji Mian, you stinky woman!! Do you have someone else outside?!
—I hate you. If you don’t reply, we’re breaking up!!
—You really won’t reply? I was wrong just now. Let’s not break up.
—Mian Mian, I miss you so much.
Ji Mian felt deeply guilty and affectionate. She immediately called her.
“I’m so sorry, I’m so sorry. I was busy and didn’t even look at my phone. Don’t be angry, baby.”
Xu Zhixia had been planning to yell at her, but upon hearing the word “baby,” she instantly melted.
“What were you doing?”
Ji Mian then told her the reason.
Xu Zhixia was surprised: “That really happened? But Mian Mian, didn’t you say you weren’t good at singing? I saw you sing better than Lan Ziqing at KTV. Have you been secretly doing something behind my back these past few years?!”
Ji Mian: “…”
“Maybe my singing talent just developed these last two years.”
Xu Zhixia actually believed her: “I knew the woman I fell in love with was the most awesome! What did you just call me?”
Hearing such a soft, affectionate voice, Ji Mian’s exhaustion vanished. She laughed: “I called you baby.”
“I want to hear it again. Keep going, keep going.”
“Baby, baby, baby!!” Ji Mian laughed loudly.
She suddenly heard the voice of Xu Zhixia’s little assistant inside the room: “I bought it for you~”
Ji Mian immediately froze: “You’re still on the filming set, aren’t you?”
“I’m almost done filming,” Xu Zhixia giggled: “Yes, I am.”
“Then our conversation was probably overheard by someone else?”
Xu Zhixia made a clicking sound of annoyance: “Oh, I’m in the makeup room. How would anyone know you would call me? No one was here just now. I’ll put on my headphones now, okay?”
“Mian Mian.”
“Hmm?”
“I miss you so much.”
Ji Mian coaxed her: “We’ll see each other very soon. Plus, in a little while, I’ll give you a surprise.”
“What surprise?”
“A song.”
“A song?” Xu Zhixia was surprised.
“A song I wrote just for you.” This was a song Ji Mian had written for her future lover, but since she hadn’t liked anyone, she just treated it as a song. Now, it was a love song belonging to her and Xu Zhixia.
Xu Zhixia rushed back to her large villa, driving quickly. On the way, she listened to the recently popular song, Summer Has You.
The play count exceeded ten million, successfully hitting the top of the music charts in just a few days.
This is the song Mian Mian wrote for her.
Xu Zhixia had listened countless times, and still found it wonderful.
“Your long hair flows, like the Red Thread of the Old Man in the Moon, pulling me in. I willingly surrender to be the one beneath your heart, and you must be the one at the very tip of mine.”
These lyrics sounded exactly like sweet nothings Ji Mian would say to her. Every time Xu Zhixia carefully savored the words, she couldn’t help but blush, and her heart began to flutter.
She happily returned to the villa, eager to video call Ji Mian, but was stunned when she saw lights on inside the house.
“Who is it?”
A graceful middle-aged woman sat on the sofa, with unfinished books and coffee on the table.
The woman looked similar to Xu Zhixia, but with more maturity. Her demeanor and gestures were clearly those of a wealthy madam.
“Mom, why are you here?” Xu Zhixia hugged her, smiling.
“You! Can’t your mother come visit?” Ji Chun gently poked her nose, her eyes filled with doting affection for her daughter.
“You didn’t even tell me you were coming,” Xu Zhixia linked arms with her and sat down, complaining flirtatiously.
Ji Chun said, “I heard you wrapped up your scenes and that you’re very busy running around. Thankfully you gave me a key, so I came over to eat with you.”
Xu Zhixia smiled: “Oh, eating with Mom is the best! Mom’s cooking is the best.”
“You! Your words are the same no matter who you talk to. You’re the best at arguing with your father.”
Xu Zhixia scoffed: “It’s Dad’s fault for having a bad temper.”
“Your temper is just as bad as your father’s.”
“Let’s not talk about him. Mom, what did you make?”
“You love my braised pork the most.”
Ji Chun led Xu Zhixia to the dining table.
The table was set with a plate full of braised pork, freshly cooked and fragrant.
Xu Zhixia sniffed it and smiled, “It smells so good.”
Ji Chun: “What song were you listening to just now?”
“It’s the recently popular ‘Summer Has You’,” Xu Zhixia said haltingly.
“I heard about it. It’s the song by Ji Mian, your former CP partner?” Ji Chun raised an eyebrow.
“Yes…” She and Ji Mian had agreed not to tell anyone, so her parents assumed she was just filming with Ji Mian and that no feelings were involved.
“Zhixia,” Ji Chun watched her eat. When her daughter was happy, she was happy.
“Hmm?”
“Do you have someone you like?”
“No, no,” Xu Zhixia was shocked and quickly waved her hands.
“Whoever you like, as long as they treat you well, your mother will support you,” Ji Chun said softly.
Xu Zhixia heard her words and slowly ate the meat, feeling genuinely warmed by the assurance.
She talked with her mother for a long time. After taking a bath and returning to the bedroom, messages from Ji Mian kept popping up.
—Baby, I’m free now. Let’s video chat.
—??
—Why are you replying so late? What were you doing?
—??
—Where are you? Baby, please tell me you’re okay!!
Xu Zhixia smiled inwardly. It’s finally her turn to come looking for me.
—Alright, alright. I was just talking to my mom.
—No video chat. It wouldn’t be good if my mom found out.
Ji Mian sent six dots.
Xu Zhixia complained: “Why did you send that?!”
—I was just worried something happened to you! I’m getting ready to come to your house.
—Then don’t come. If my mom finds out…
Xu Zhixia thought about it. Actually, it wouldn’t be so bad if Mom found out, since she supports me no matter what.
—Too late. I’m already at your house.
Xu Zhixia: “…”
Outside, a sudden storm erupted, with thunder and lightning. Good heavens, Ji Mian won’t be able to leave now.
—It’s starting to rain. Baby, I don’t have an umbrella.
Ji Mian sent a dozen crying emojis. Xu Zhixia was both worried and frantic, immediately grabbing a coat.
—Wait for me. I’ll be right there!!
But she ran into her mother in the living room.
“Why are you wearing a coat?” Ji Chun asked, “Are you going out?”
Xu Zhixia really wanted to tell her mother she was going to pick up her girlfriend, but she had just claimed she didn’t have one. If she suddenly brought home an Alpha she had a thousand scandals with, her mother would worry even more. Besides, Mian Mian probably didn’t want to meet her mother-in-law so soon.
So she said, “It’s raining outside, so I’m going to check if the door is locked.”
“Oh dear, you just took a shower. You’ll get wet going out. I’ll go check.”
“No, no!!” Xu Zhixia shielded the door and laughed: “Mom, you should go back to sleep. This is something the daughter should do!”
Without another word, she opened the door and rushed out.
Ji Chun pursed her lips: “Honestly, so scatterbrained and reckless.”
A thin layer of rain was already falling from the sky. Ji Mian had to take off her jacket to cover herself, but it couldn’t stop the cold rain from soaking her. The summer rain was particularly intense and fast.
Hearing the sound of the door lock, Xu Zhixia tightly hugged Ji Mian.
“Mian Mian!”
Her voice was soft and sweet. Even though her body was cold, Ji Mian couldn’t help but feel warm.
Ji Mian patted her hand and laughed, “I’m glad you came.”
Xu Zhixia was soaked from her frantic run. The rain on her face ran down to her neck. Ji Mian helped wipe her dry, feeling the warm, smooth touch of her skin, which inexplicably sent a tingle through her.
“Alright, I’ll take you back inside first.”
“Where is your mom?” Ji Mian asked cautiously.
“Mom? You mean mother-in-law, right?” Xu Zhixia winked: “She should be in the living room. Don’t worry, I won’t let her see you.”
They walked under the eaves. Xu Zhixia secretly peeked inside and saw her mother watching short videos at the dining table.
She was laughing loudly. The second-floor bedroom was right behind her.
Xu Zhixia left the umbrella at the door and tiptoed with Ji Mian past Ji Chun. Suddenly, Ji Chun saw some gossip and burst into loud laughter.
Ji Mian peeked out of curiosity. It was a video about her and Xu Zhixia’s scandal—the one where they were walking at night.
Ji Mian’s eyes widened. She found it unbelievable.
Xu Zhixia was startled by her mother’s laughter and urged Ji Mian to quickly go upstairs. Once Ji Mian reached the second floor, Xu Zhixia felt relieved and started to walk down.
But Ji Chun suddenly turned around, and the two came face-to-face.
“Mom?” Xu Zhixia said awkwardly.
Ji Chun saw that her hair and clothes were wet and gently chided her: “Look at you! You went out to lock a door and turned into a drowned rat. Hurry up and go take a shower.”
Ji Chun helped her take off her coat and hurried her.
Xu Zhixia gave a hurried “Oh, oh,” and ran upstairs.
She was absolutely terrified. Thank goodness she didn’t find out!
