Chapter 21

However, once they arrived, Gu Chufu regretted everything.

If she had known they wanted her to act as bait to lure out some old demon, there was no way she would have agreed to this.

Heaven above, heaven’s grandmother above! She was not some profound immortal sect disciple with deep cultivation. She was just a twenty-first-century slacker who had to struggle for ages just to get into graduate school.

Why was transmigrating into a cultivation world still this competitive?

She really did not want to compete anymore.

Could a person not just lie down and make money? Stretch out a hand and have clothes brought over, open her mouth and have food fed to her—was that not the ultimate truth of human life?

“Senior Sister Gu, we’ll have to trouble you with this. We’re all relying on that magical artifact of yours.”

This village was like a ghost town. Once night fell, not a single lamp was lit. Gu Chufu’s legs trembled violently, and all the horror movies she had watched in the past started jumping through her mind.

No, no. She could not do this. Could they call someone else?

“That’s right, Senior Sister Gu. Once we get the reward later, we’ll definitely give you a few extra shares. After all, you’ll be the great contributor.”

How had this group already started discussing how to split the bonus? Had any of them considered what would happen if she really got eaten by the demon?

Aish, you heartless little wolf cubs.

“As long as you lure it out, that will be enough. Don’t fight it head-on.”

Shen Jingjun stared at Gu Chufu’s trembling legs and finally offered a word of comfort.

“That’s right, Senior Sister Gu. Senior Sister Shen is right. You only need to lure the monster out. Leave the rest to us.”

“We’ll definitely kill that monster until not a piece of armor remains!”

“Only then can we ease the hatred in the villagers’ hearts and eliminate this great disaster harming the common people.”

“This is a good deed that will accumulate hidden virtue.”

Damn it. If you’re making it sound that easy, then you do it! Gu Chufu’s face was full of refusal. She shook her head slightly, every inch of her body radiating resistance.

But just then, a violent wind rose, and the shadows of the trees swayed. It was a dark and windy night. Leaves rustled loudly in the gale, and the moon was covered by dark clouds. Even the faint, pale light that had filled the area disappeared.

“That demon is almost here. Find places to hide.”

“Junior Sister, we’re counting on you.”

Shen Jingjun tilted her ear and listened. She heard chaotic footsteps approaching, moving like a gust of wind through the forest. The speed was almost no slower than their sword flight.

“Hey… you all…”

Don’t leave!

Gu Chufu sucked in a breath of cold air that drilled straight into her lungs. Her hearing was sharper than everyone else’s here, so she could hear the monster’s breathing clearly. It was rapidly approaching where she stood.

Then a bat monster massive enough to blot out the sky swept through the forest. Its black wings beat violently, kicking up dust from the ground and sending grass roots and small stones flying everywhere. Its bloody maw gaped wide, and a foul stench sprayed straight into Gu Chufu’s face along with its saliva.

It let out a low roar. The ugly sound poured into her ears.

But strangely… Gu Chufu was shocked to discover that she could actually understand what the bat monster was saying.

“Fox spirit, are you here to fight me for humans to eat?”

“Then don’t blame me for being impolite.”

“If you know what’s good for you, leave at once. Since we are both of the demon race, I’ll spare you this time!”

Its saliva sprayed all over her face.

It stank so badly!

She was really about to throw up. How long had it been since this bat monster brushed its teeth? Its sharp teeth were yellow, and drool kept dripping down.

“How do you know I’m…”

How strange. Why could this bat see through her identity at a glance? Gu Chufu felt all over her body. The jade pendant that sealed her aura and cultivation was still there. By logic, nothing should have gone wrong.

“Hmph. I’ve seen that jade pendant of yours before.”

“You fox clan members are always so arrogant and self-righteous, yet you still try to use other magical artifacts to suppress that filthy seductive stench on your bodies.”

But in everyone else’s ears, all they heard was the bat screeching strangely, yi yi ya ya. The sound was [stolen content]miserable and piercing, enough to make one’s head swell.

“Senior Sister Shen, is Senior Sister Gu about to be unable to hold on? Shouldn’t we go up?”

Covering their ears, the group could barely stand the sound alone. One person even started bleeding from the nose, the drops falling onto his disciple robes.

“If you can’t manage it, I’ll go myself.”

That person hurriedly covered his nostrils, his brows furrowed. Blood seeped between his fingers, and his words came out muffled.

“Senior Sister Shen… I can still do it.”

However, Shen Jingjun paid no attention to the group stumbling around. She directly drew her sword.

Stepping into the air, she flung out a teleportation talisman. Shen Jingjun thrust her sword forward, purple lightning coiling around the blade with the force to shatter ten thousand armies. The fierce hurricane stirred up by the bat’s wings blew her long hair loose, half of her face covered by dark strands that fell over her brows and eyes.

“Demon! Pay with your life!”

She looked immortal and righteous, filled with noble justice.

Because the bat monster was so enormous, it could not dodge in time. The blade cut straight into its wing, carrying a streak of purple lightning. Gu Chufu hurriedly backed up several steps. Whatever happened, she could not let that electricity conduct into her body too.

The bat monster let out a heart-rending scream, seemingly badly wounded by the power of thunder. Gu Chufu could clearly hear what it was roaring.

“Filthy fox spirit… You actually dare collude with human cultivators… betraying our demon race! Your intentions are vile… You’ll die a terrible death!”

It was practically nothing but vicious curses.

Gu Chufu felt unbelievably innocent. Please. She had been pushed here to act as bait. Who knew this bat monster would be stupid enough to deliver itself right to the door?

If it got caught, could that really be blamed on her?

Not listening, not listening—just a turtle chanting scriptures.

Gu Chufu simply covered her ears. Only then did that piercing cry quiet down a little. Her face had been sprayed with saliva, so she quickly wiped it clean with her sleeve. The stench nearly made her faint.

“You’ve taken so many lives! You cannot be allowed to live!”

Shen Jingjun pulled out her sword and was about to strike again, but the bat monster had already sensed the danger. It beat its wings, trying to flee.

“Senior Sister Shen, we’re here!”

White light from spells suddenly flared. Several people teleported over one after another. Gu Chufu was protected behind them, though their appearances were rather comical. They were swaying all over the place and could barely stand steady.

Some of them also had wounds of varying depths on their bodies.

Shen Jingjun seemed unconcerned. She alone was enough to contend with this monster, and she even faintly held the upper hand. The bat demon was beaten back again and again until it had no choice but to turn to Gu Chufu for help.

“Fox spirit, are you truly going to watch our demon race fall to this state? If you have even a shred of conscience left, stop these human cultivators.”

It seemed only Gu Chufu could understand those words. She looked left, then right. Her fellow disciples had her firmly protected behind them, while Shen Jingjun at that moment was like an asura, almost crazed with killing intent. There were hardly any intact patches of flesh left on the bat demon’s body. Blood poured down to the ground, and the bloody smell drilled straight into Gu Chufu’s nose.

It made her so sick she only wanted to vomit.

Should she really help this demon?
