Chapter 75

Sheng Zhi blinked, realizing that Ji Qingfan was jealous.

Jealous… of a puppy.

And her tone couldn’t have been more sour.

“How can you be jealous of a puppy?” Sheng Zhi put down the pup in her arms, turned sideways, and pulled Ji Qingfan into a hug, laughing.

Sheng Zhi’s tone was playful, but Ji Qingfan seemed to panic even more, looking as flustered as someone who couldn’t judge if their actions were “normal.” “Do you… hate me now?”

“What do you mean ‘hate’? Why would you say that? Isn’t it good to express yourself to me? Do you expect me to let you suffer in silence while you digest and deal with it all in your heart?” Sheng Zhi met Ji Qingfan’s gaze, her vibrant eyes tilting up slightly. Her heart softened even further, and she pressed her nose intimately against the other’s. “Qingfan, you are the most important. If you don’t want to, we won’t raise the puppy.”

She stated that she was the most important with a very firm tone.

In the gaze she returned, there was a pool of moving, incredibly soft affection. She was so indulgent—just like the day she allowed herself to be led by the hand, step by step, into that golden cage, her magnificent skirt spreading out in layers. She had been as beautiful as a swan offering its neck to the blade, yet she only said to her, “I am yours,” and “You can do whatever you want.”

Should I be satisfied?

I should be satisfied.

But why, even when Sheng Zhi showed such an indulgent and doting posture, did she still feel it wasn’t enough? Like an insatiable monster, she swallowed the small comforts for a brief respite, only for even greater hunger and greed to rise.

She even began to wonder if her own judgment had been wrong. Perhaps Sheng Zhi could, completely and willingly, accept the full extent of her greed and possessiveness?

—As she wishes, so shall she be repaid.

Those dark thoughts wobbled precariously between restraint and permission. The person being stared at couldn’t see a trace of it; she was still approaching dangerously, closer and closer.

Ji Qingfan seemed to fall into a daze because of her words, but she didn’t speak. However, Sheng Zhi was very familiar with the expression she wore. It was a posture that craved a kiss. In every moment of seamless intimacy, she had traced that look carefully.

Just as the kiss was about to land, a soft sound came from the doorway. Meeting Sheng Zhi’s lifted gaze, Shi Wenjia felt the sudden urge to bolt. “I didn’t mean to interrupt you guys!”

She was so embarrassed her face was practically red. Of all times to walk in, why did it have to be exactly then?

Shi Wenjia was the friend Sheng Zhi had called earlier—the one who owned several pet hospitals. There were two daughters in the Shi family; technically, Shi Wenjia was the heir-presumptive who was supposed to take over the family business. But she had no interest in that; she wanted to be a veterinarian. So, without further ado, she made her younger sister take over and ran off to open the pet hospital of her dreams. Sheng Zhi had met her sister—she was the polar opposite of Wenjia, steady and capable, looking more like the older sister than the younger one.

Seeing her like this, Sheng Zhi immediately guessed about seventy or eighty percent of her frantic internal monologue.

“Actually, you came at the perfect time. I’ll leave this puppy to you; I’m not taking it home.” She broke her embrace with Ji Qingfan, but Ji Qingfan immediately moved to her side and took her hand.

“Sure,” Shi Wenjia nodded in agreement. She watched somewhat dazed as Sheng Zhi and Ji Qingfan left hand-in-hand. The scene she had just witnessed was still playing in her head.

No way… can Sheng Zhi actually make that kind of expression?

She hadn’t really felt it when she heard mutual friends gossiping about it, but seeing it with her own eyes, she felt it was as real as could be. Who would have thought the most cynical one would be the first to settle down?

She couldn’t help but feel a bit sentimental as she picked up the puppy, who was still blinking at the door. “Alright, cutie, you’re coming home with me—a single dog without a girlfriend.”

“Jiao Jiao, can we not come back here in the future?”

As they sat in the car, Sheng Zhi heard Ji Qingfan’s soft, questioning voice. Her tone was hesitant and very cautious, like a dragonfly skimming the water—a probe.

“…Why?” Sheng Zhi found that she sometimes couldn’t quite keep up with Ji Qingfan’s train of thought. For instance, right now, she didn’t quite understand why she would suddenly say that.

“Mhm, it’s just,” Ji Qingfan spoke even more hesitantly, “that person just now kept looking at you. Over and over, she looked at you so many times.”

Sheng Zhi grew even more confused. “Which person?”

Ji Qingfan added reluctantly, “That friend of Jiao Jiao’s.” She seemed to hate the idea of any connection between Sheng Zhi and the other woman.

“Ah, you mean Wenjia. When you said ‘that person,’ I thought it was some stranger,” Sheng Zhi realized what was going on and explained. “We were just chatting, after all.”

“No, she really looked at you a lot. Even when we were about to leave, she was still looking…” At this point, Ji Qingfan’s voice paused, and her tone suddenly became incredibly aggrieved. “Jiao Jiao, why do you call her ‘Wenjia’? You call me by the last two characters of my name, too.”

Sheng Zhi couldn’t help but chuckle as she raised the privacy partition in the back of the car. Ji Qingfan was gentle and tolerant most of the time; this side of her felt… indescribable. She didn’t think Ji Qingfan actually decided never to come here again. It sounded more like something said in the heat of jealousy, didn’t it?

Once again, she gained a profound understanding of how much Ji Qingfan lacked security. But looking at Ji Qingfan’s insecure, fearful state, Sheng Zhi felt the root cause was that her own response to those feelings had come too late. That’s why Ji Qingfan was like this.

“Then I won’t call you ‘Qingfan’ anymore. How about I call you ‘Wife’?” Her eyes shimmered with a soft light as she gave her a beaming smile. As she spoke, she added a playful, coaxing lilt: “Wife, what do you say?”

She was the one acting spoiled, and she was the one who proactively used the title, but in truth, Sheng Zhi was embarrassed to the extreme. Even though she’d had the thought for a while, saying it for the first time felt strangely shy… She had originally thought she would wait for a day when Ji Qingfan called her that, then take the opportunity to switch titles, but Ji Qingfan never had.

If she wouldn’t say it, then fine; Sheng Zhi wanted to say it too much, and the current atmosphere felt natural and right.

However, after she spoke, Ji Qingfan suddenly went silent, making Sheng Zhi feel a bit anxious. Would she find the title too sappy?

“…Call me that a few more times.” Ji Qingfan stared at her fixedly.

Seeing that Ji Qingfan loved it, Sheng Zhi completely relaxed and called her the name repeatedly. Ji Qingfan’s face flushed as well. The jealous expression from a moment ago melted into a moist, seductive aura. She braced her hands in front of her, arching her back as she leaned in for a kiss. “Wife, kiss me… the kiss from before was interrupted, you have to make it up to me.”

They shared a long, wet kiss. The atmosphere was thick with love and sweetness.

“But… is it really okay for me to be like that?” Just after the kiss, her lips still a vibrant crimson, Ji Qingfan spoke in a soft, low whisper, her breath slightly ragged.

“How could it not be? I actually hope you’ll express these emotions to me more often; don’t just hold them in.” Sheng Zhi wanted Ji Qingfan to feel more secure, so she comforted her over and over. “No one is more important than you. My love belongs only to you.”

Seeing that Ji Qingfan had stopped mentioning Shi Wenjia altogether, she touched the corner of her lips and teased, “But that was a lot of jealousy. Wife, you’re like a vinegar jar.”

—Jealous of a puppy, jealous of a friend looking at her. So much jealousy.

Perhaps Ji Qingfan had always been this jealous in the past, but since she couldn’t express it, she’d had to digest it all silently. Thinking about it like that—being hurt but having no one to care, relying entirely on curling up and licking her own wounds—made Sheng Zhi’s heart turn into a complete mush.

She was indulging her. Continuously, once again, and then again—indulging her.

The shades of color in Ji Qingfan’s eyes shifted. As the car passed through the streets, the uneven light made her eyes flicker between light and shadow.

“I just get jealous,” she murmured, her tone a bit muffled. “Wife can only like me. You can only love me. Your eyes and heart can only have me; you must love me forever. Your whole body and soul must belong to me; no one can take your attention away. If you change your mind and fall for someone else, I’ll kill them. If I can’t kill them, I’ll cripple them.”

As she spoke, she stared at her, her pupils reflecting only Sheng Zhi’s silhouette. “Wife doesn’t want to involve others, right? So if you don’t want others to be dragged in, you have to love only me.”

Sheng Zhi was a bit startled by her words. Ji Qingfan sounded extremely radical, especially those bits about killing or crippling people. It was bizarre and dangerous.

But in the very next second, Ji Qingfan gave her a smile that looked almost shy—a kind of shyness she rarely saw. She had seen Ji Qingfan’s gentle smiles and her seductive smiles, but very rarely this one. Her face still held the flush from their earlier passion; paired with this smile, she looked beautiful and delicate, not at all scary.

Sheng Zhi snapped out of it and laughed as well, thinking she had just been too tense. Ji Qingfan’s words were likely just a deliberate exaggeration.

…Indeed, she had been too sensitive just now to feel that way. Ji Qingfan was clearly playing a game with her—just like someone telling a cat “you’re so cute I want to eat you up,” it doesn’t mean they actually intend to eat the kitten. Moreover, such a paranoid thought couldn’t possibly be real.

Sheng Zhi relaxed and cooperatively played along with this “threatened” scenario, even letting out a mock-pleading tone: “I will love you, I beg you, please don’t involve innocent people.”

But after finishing her exaggerated performance, she couldn’t help but curve her eyes and let out a light laugh. “My acting is so fake; your tone was much more convincing.”

After laughing, Sheng Zhi added seriously: “But really, I love you and only you. You can express any insecurity to me; I want to give you more security.”

She also believed that one day in the future, this would be fully realized—giving Ji Qingfan enough security so she would no longer be anxious.

Hearing her say this, Ji Qingfan leaned in to kiss her again.

“Mhm, mhm…” While responding to her kiss, she spoke soft, obsessive words of love. “I love you so, so much, too. I’ll love you forever.”
