Foreseeing the Future: The Scheming Film Queen and I Got Married - Chapter 34
“Hm?” Dong Yao turned back and looked at the person sitting on the hospital bed.
Gu Shiqiu was still holding her wrist and had not let go. She looked up at Dong Yao without speaking.
Dong Yao suddenly recalled that when she had transmigrated to the future before, Gu Shiqiu had a fever and had acted shamelessly, refusing to put on clothes and only wanting to curl up in her arms.
The way she looked then was exactly the same as now.
Soft and adorable.
Whenever Gu Shiqiu got sick, she seemed to become a different person, making others unable to help feeling a bit protective.
Dong Yao’s gaze fell on her tightly held hand, and she smiled. “What? Are you scared of staying alone?”
Gu Shiqiu let go of her wrist. “No.”
Dong Yao said, “I’m only going out for a moment to have the doctor come check on you. A few minutes at most.”
Gu Shiqiu looked at her, seeming to weigh it for a moment, then nodded rather reluctantly.
Dong Yao held back a laugh. Gu Shiqiu always treated her like a child, but the way Gu Shiqiu looked right now was not much different from a child either.
Since the child was being so obedient, she deserved a reward. So Dong Yao walked up and patted Gu Shiqiu on the head. “So good.”
Gu Shiqiu’s brows furrowed slightly.
Dong Yao raised her brows, looking rather like she was saying, What can you do about it?
Gu Shiqiu laughed helplessly. “All right, I won’t mess around with you. Go call the doctor over.”
Dong Yao nodded, turned, and walked out. She pushed open the door, then turned back and gently closed it.
Gu Shiqiu’s gaze followed her the whole way. Even after the door closed, she still did not withdraw her gaze and continued staring at the door.
Two seconds later, the door suddenly opened again, and a little head poked in.
It was Dong Yao.
“Little friend, don’t be scared. I checked already. There are no ghosts in the ward,” Dong Yao said with a grin. She said there were no ghosts, but her tone clearly carried deliberate intimidation.
Gu Shiqiu looked at her and smiled. “You’re a little boring.”
Dong Yao stuck out her tongue. She stopped teasing her, closed the door, and went to call the doctor.
About five minutes later, a male doctor in a white coat, wearing glasses and with a crew cut, came to the ward together with Dong Yao.
The male doctor examined Gu Shiqiu and asked whether she felt any discomfort. Gu Shiqiu answered each question.
The male doctor said, “The wound is still healing. For now, there’s nothing serious. Pay attention to your diet these next few days. Don’t eat anything spicy. Try to keep it light…”
Dong Yao stood to the side and listened very seriously, memorizing each instruction one by one.
Gu Shiqiu nodded. “Understood. Thank you, Doctor.”
The male doctor coughed lightly twice. “It’s what I should do. No need to thank me.”
The examination was finished, and the precautions had been explained. Logically, the doctor should leave, but he touched his nose and adjusted his glasses.
He dawdled, hesitating as if he had something to say but was too embarrassed to speak.
Gu Shiqiu seemed to understand. She smiled and asked, “Is there something else?”
The male doctor coughed lightly again. “My friend is your fan. After he found out you were hospitalized at the hospital where I work, he asked me for a favor. I was wondering… could I ask for an autograph?”
“I see. Of course. Do you have a pen?” Gu Shiqiu said.
“Yes, yes.” The doctor took out the paper and pen he had prepared long ago from his pocket.
With one hand, Gu Shiqiu swiftly signed her name and handed the paper and pen back to him.
The male doctor hurriedly thanked her. Gu Shiqiu shook her head and said it was nothing.
Before leaving, the male doctor praised her. “Miss Gu is even prettier than on TV.”
Gu Shiqiu smiled and said thank you, then watched him leave.
As soon as he left the ward, two or three young nurses surrounded him. “How was it, how was it? Did you get the autograph?”
The male doctor nodded and rather proudly waved the paper in his hand.
“Let me see.” A nurse snatched the paper over.
The male doctor clicked his tongue. “Be careful. I finally managed to get that autograph, and you almost tore it.”
The nurse ignored him and stared at the signature. “Gu Shiqiu’s handwriting is really beautiful.”
The male doctor said, “Not only is her handwriting beautiful, but she herself is super beautiful too. I thought she was already pretty enough on TV, but after seeing her in person—my god, compared to real life, even TV doesn’t do her justice.”
“Her skin is so fair, and she’s super gentle. She has no airs at all and is especially kind.”
“When she smiled at me just now, I really felt like my heart was struck. I’m not exaggerating at all!”
The group chattered noisily, gathering around that autograph. Each person looked at it, and they discussed it enthusiastically.
The head nurse passed by and scolded them for being noisy. The group sheepishly scattered.
Inside the ward.
“Do you want water?” Dong Yao asked.
Gu Shiqiu nodded.
Dong Yao walked to the table, poured a cup, and handed it over.
Gu Shiqiu took it and drank a small sip.
“Finish it. The doctor said just now that you need to drink more water.” Dong Yao stared at the cup in her hand like a supervisor.
Gu Shiqiu obediently drank the entire cup of water.
Only after seeing the cup empty did Dong Yao nod in satisfaction.
“Do you want to sleep a little more?” Dong Yao asked.
Gu Shiqiu shook her head. “No. I can’t sleep.”
Dong Yao gave an “mm.” “Then do you want to play on your phone? Where’s your phone? I’ll get it for you.”
Gu Shiqiu shook her head.
Dong Yao said, “If you don’t play on your phone, are you just going to sit here doing nothing?”
Gu Shiqiu said, “Aren’t you here? How could that be doing nothing?”
Dong Yao said, “Staring at each other?”
Gu Shiqiu laughed and looked at her a little helplessly. “We can chat.”
Dong Yao froze. Her brain spun once, then directly crashed. “Chat about what?”
“Food?” Gu Shiqiu said.
Dong Yao walked to the bed and sat on the stool beside it. “Are you sure you want to talk about that? Right now, you can’t eat this, and you can’t eat that. If we talk about this, won’t you die of craving later?”
“That seems true.” Gu Shiqiu gazed at her. “I would crave.”
Dong Yao’s expression paused. Meeting Gu Shiqiu’s eyes, she suddenly felt the atmosphere become uncomfortable.
What was going on with Gu Shiqiu? They were clearly talking about craving food, so why did the moment Gu Shiqiu said “I would crave,” paired with that unblinking gaze, it somehow feel like she was craving something else?
Dong Yao pretended to naturally avoid Gu Shiqiu’s gaze.
But Gu Shiqiu seemed not to notice Dong Yao’s discomfort and kept staring at her.
Dong Yao could not stand being stared at and glared at her.
It would have been better if she had not glared. Once she did, Gu Shiqiu went from quietly looking at Dong Yao to now… looking at Dong Yao with a smile.
Dong Yao simply reached out and, without rhyme or reason, directly covered Gu Shiqiu’s eyes.
When Gu Shiqiu blinked, her lashes brushed across Dong Yao’s palm, ticklish.
Gu Shiqiu did not move her hand away and only laughed softly.
That laugh was very… seductive.
Dong Yao’s ears reddened, and she withdrew the hand covering Gu Shiqiu’s eyes.
But Gu Shiqiu laughed even more happily.
Dong Yao clicked her tongue. “Gu Shiqiu.”
Gu Shiqiu stopped laughing and gave an “mm.”
Dong Yao raised her head and asked seriously, “Do you often flirt with young girls?”
So practiced. She did not look like a beginner at all.
“Why do you think that?” Gu Shiqiu asked.
Dong Yao said, “Just a kind of intuition.”
Gu Shiqiu said, “Then your intuition might not be very accurate.”
Dong Yao gave an “oh,” not really believing it.
After all, there was still that short little person with horn pigtails. No matter how long passed, Dong Yao remembered very clearly that Gu Shiqiu liked this person.
“If you’re not playing on your phone, then I’m playing on mine. Am I really supposed to sit here staring at you?” Dong Yao took out her phone and pretended to play with it.
But after playing for two minutes, she was actually only swiping back and forth across the home screen, tapping into one app, swiping a few times, then exiting, then opening another app and swiping a few times, repeating this cycle.
Before long, Dong Yao put down the phone and looked up at her.
“Not playing anymore?” Gu Shiqiu asked.
Dong Yao looked at her, her expression turning a little more serious. “Gu Shiqiu, although I hope you’ll never encounter any danger again, just in case, I still want to say this. When saving someone, act within your ability. Don’t do what you did yesterday again.”
Gu Shiqiu did not answer.
Dong Yao asked, “At that time, why didn’t you let go of my hand?”
Gu Shiqiu’s expression paused before she replied, “Why would I let go?”
“In that situation, if the bodyguard hadn’t woken up in time, you very likely would have been stabbed several more times. Letting go of me would have lowered your danger by a lot. Besides, there was water below. I wouldn’t have fallen to my death,” Dong Yao said. “You shouldn’t have held on to me like that.”
Gu Shiqiu said, “There was a river below, yes. But falling from that height—unless you’re a professional diver, for an ordinary person, falling into the water is no different from falling onto concrete.”
Dong Yao’s expression paused.
“It’s not that just because there was a river below and you can swim, you’d be safe.” Gu Shiqiu seemed to know that Dong Yao did not understand these things and explained it.
Dong Yao said, “So what? If I fell, I would die, but would grabbing me help? You’d just die with me?”
Dong Yao pressed her lips together. “Gu Shiqiu, to be honest, if our positions were reversed, if I had been the one holding on to you as you were about to fall, I might not have held your hand so firmly.”
“I might not be worth you risking your life to save.”
The atmosphere fell into silence.
After an unknown amount of time, Gu Shiqiu broke the silence and said, “There are many things that can’t be judged by whether they’re worth it or not. I didn’t want to let go. Even if it happened again, I still wouldn’t let go.”
Dong Yao looked at her, wanting to speak but hesitating.
When Gu Shiqiu had held on tightly and refused to let go, had Dong Yao not been moved? Of course she had been moved. But along with that emotion came even more guilt.
When one could not return the same level of sacrifice, guilt would arise.
Gu Shiqiu seemed to see through Dong Yao’s thoughts. She said, “If our positions truly were reversed, you wouldn’t let go of my hand either.”
Dong Yao said, “I’m afraid of death. I couldn’t do it. Even I don’t believe in myself, yet you do?”
Gu Shiqiu gazed into her eyes. “When I passed out, you fought someone holding a knife all by yourself.”
Dong Yao froze.
Gu Shiqiu said, “So you don’t need to feel guilty, and you don’t need to say thank you. You saved me too, didn’t you?”
Dong Yao looked at the wound on Gu Shiqiu’s left shoulder, and her guilt grew even heavier. Because originally, she could have stopped it. But it seemed she had treated the matter too lightly, too casually, without enough planning.
If she had been more cautious and less careless, perhaps the incident could have been prevented.
Or perhaps this matter had happened precisely because she had come to stop it. If she had not come, perhaps Gu Shiqiu would not have been injured at all.
Had her arrival created this accident, or was it because Gu Shiqiu was destined to encounter these things anyway? Dong Yao could not quite understand the cause and effect between them.
“You’re wrong. I’m not as selfless and great as you. When that person was going to drag you out of the car, I did think about ignoring you. My first reaction was to hide in the car and not move. In the end, I only rushed forward because my conscience couldn’t bear it,” Dong Yao said honestly.
Gu Shiqiu said, “If we remove the process and only discuss the result, no matter what, you didn’t let that person drag me away. Fear is human nature. Having the thought of retreating isn’t shameful.”
Dong Yao looked at her and did not speak for a long time.
In this kind of atmosphere, one would think the other person was about to say something deeply moving. Unexpectedly, Dong Yao said, “That seems true. I am still pretty upright and fearless. In that case, you should thank me.”
Gu Shiqiu was visibly stunned.
Gu Shiqiu smiled helplessly. “All right. Thank you. You were amazing.”
Dong Yao said, “No need to thank me. I’ve always been someone who loves acting bravely for justice.”
Gu Shiqiu was amused by her serious manner. “Then should I give you a silk banner?”
Dong Yao said, “There’s no need for a silk banner. I’m hungry. I want to eat. Buy me a meal, and that can count as your thanks.”
Gu Shiqiu said, “All right. I’ll buy you food.”
Dong Yao glanced at her. “I’ve discovered that your temper is really good. You were clearly injured because you saved me, yet I’m reversing cause and effect, and you’re still cooperating.”
“This matter was caused by me dragging you into it. If…” Gu Shiqiu said.
Dong Yao raised a hand, cutting her off. “All right, stop. If you think you dragged me into it, then when you buy me food, just order a few more dishes for me.”
Gu Shiqiu smiled. “Okay.”
