I Turned Out To Be The Paranoid Villain’s White Moonlight - Chapter 16
Everyone knew that Zhan Yao had a habit of taking an afternoon nap.
Although they had already decided to register their marriage, there was no reason to deprive herself of rest, no matter how urgent it was. It was still early, so Zhan Yao yawned and decided to return to her room for a short nap first.
Before she could go upstairs, Yu Wanqiao called out to stop her.
“What?” Zhan Yao asked, assuming Yu Wanqiao wanted to take her there immediately. “It’s noon. Not only is the Civil Affairs Bureau on break, but I need to rest too.”
“Besides, we’ll have to take photographs later. If I don’t sleep well, my complexion won’t look good.” She frowned slightly, her tone proud and delicate. “I don’t want the pictures to turn out ugly.”
Whenever she adopted that attitude, Young Miss Zhan would certainly become very unhappy if the other person dared argue with her again.
However, Yu Wanqiao did not seem to know this and actually spoke once more.
She merely said, “I only wanted to remind you that you forgot something, Yaoyao.”
With that, she gently shook the ring box in her hand.
Only then did Zhan Yao realize that she had forgotten the rings.
“I didn’t forget.” Although Zhan Yao knew she was in the wrong, she still spoke righteously. “I only wanted to leave them there and have a servant bring them upstairs later.”
“But since Wanqiao reminded me, I’ll take them with me now.”
As she spoke, she reached for the ring in Yu Wanqiao’s hand. Unexpectedly, Yu Wanqiao gently took hold of her hand instead.
“?” Zhan Yao raised her eyes toward her.
Yu Wanqiao shook her head. At some point, she had quietly taken out the ring that belonged to Zhan Yao.
“Let me put it on for you, Yaoyao,” she said.
Without waiting for Zhan Yao to reply, she gently slipped it onto her ring finger. Her movements were extraordinarily tender, as though she were handling a priceless work of art.
This time, Zhan Yao once again noticed her faintly trembling fingertips, carrying a sense of restraint that she was desperately trying to suppress.
Just like when they first met.
Now, Zhan Yao understood.
Yu Wanqiao was probably nervous.
If this was merely an act, then her reaction was far too realistic. After pausing for several seconds, Zhan Yao decided to play along.
“The ring is beautiful. Thank you, Wanqiao.”
“Don’t worry. I’ll treat you well after we get married.” Her beautiful almond-shaped eyes curved, making her look adorable and well-behaved. “We’ll share both blessings and hardships, discuss everything together, treat each other sincerely, and never betray one another.”
“You have to do the same,” she continued. “Come home earlier from now on and spend more time with me whenever you’re free. If you can’t be here in person, then having your money here will do. I’m used to being pampered and can’t endure even the slightest hardship.”
“If you don’t treat me well, we’ll go back to the Civil Affairs Bureau and get divorced. Do you understand?”
She spoke as though this were a real marriage.
The moment she finished, Yu Wanqiao instinctively froze.
Zhan Yao raised her eyes toward her. “Did I say something wrong?”
Actually, most of what she had just said was not particularly important. Yu Wanqiao could listen if she wanted; if she did not, then forget it.
There was only one point that mattered: the money had to be provided.
They had already reached that understanding when they signed the agreement. It could not be changed. If that changed, there was no way they could continue living together.
Her gaze was complicated, while her expression was both proud and adorable.
“It’s nothing.” After several seconds of silence, Yu Wanqiao suddenly smiled.
“I understand.” She gently brushed her fingertip over the ring on Zhan Yao’s finger, her voice soft and sincere. “The same goes for me.”
She said, “I’ll be sure to treat you well from now on.”
Yu Wanqiao seemed to have included their marriage registration in today’s schedule long ago, as she had already prepared every necessary document.
She had even prepared clothes for Zhan Yao. Once Zhan Yao finished her afternoon nap, the two of them got ready and went to the Civil Affairs Bureau together.
Everything proceeded smoothly. They filled out the declarations, took their photographs, and received their marriage certificates. Even after completing the entire process, they still had plenty of time left. Zhan Yao could not help regretting that she had not slept a little longer.
However, since they were already outside, they might as well go shopping before returning home.
“Are you going to accompany me?” Zhan Yao looked at Yu Wanqiao beside her.
The two of them had come alone today without bringing a single bodyguard. Zhan Yao had no intention of carrying her purchases herself. She was only asking out of basic politeness.
“Now that we’ve registered our marriage, does this also count as part of our duties as wives?”
She was excellent at putting what she learned into practice.
Yu Wanqiao nodded. Her entire day already belonged to Zhan Yao.
“All right.”
“Then let’s go.” Zhan Yao nodded and climbed into the car cheerfully.
Inside the car, Zhan Yao called out to the system in her mind.
“I have a question. Do you know what the most satisfying part of shopping is?”
The system had heard Zhan Yao ask this question before and immediately perked up.
“I know! Swiping the card!”
“No.” Zhan Yao shook her head mysteriously. “The most satisfying part is having someone else swipe the card for you—and that person just happens to be your wife.”
The system: “…”
Wuwuwu. Why did it suddenly feel even more envious?
As they spoke, the car soon arrived at their destination.
Zhan Yao and Yu Wanqiao got out together and walked side by side into the shopping center. Several stores Zhan Yao liked had recently released new collections. The moment she entered, she was dazzled. She wanted to try this one and liked that one too.
“Miss, perhaps you should think it over a little more?” The sales associate was a newcomer and did not recognize either of them.
Seeing Zhan Yao take one item after another, she worried that she might waste money and ultimately decided to offer some advice.
“The season is about to change. Buying this many clothes now may not be very economical. You could choose a few favorites to take home first and return for the rest after some time.”
In other words, if she waited a little longer, they would definitely go on sale.
“It’s all right.” Zhan Yao shook her head.
Anything she liked had to be purchased immediately. There was no reason to wait. Besides, by then the new styles would have become old, and she did not want to wear the same thing as everyone else.
However, she understood that the young woman meant well.
“Thank you. I know what I’m doing.”
“Y-You’re welcome.” The young woman shook her head.
She had been working here for several days, and this was the first time a customer had thanked her.
“Would you like me to recommend a few more pieces?”
Zhan Yao nodded. “Sure.”
“You have such an excellent figure and you’re very beautiful, so you can carry practically any style. For example, this fitted dress has a striking cutout design across the chest, while the asymmetrical skirt makes it both sensual and playfully charming. You could wear it to private gatherings, bars, or similar occasions. You’d definitely captivate a great many people.”
“There’s also this pure white skirt. The design is very classic and can be paired with many different styles. You definitely won’t regret buying it.”
“And this one, and that one…”
She had to admit that the young woman had a good eye.
Following her recommendations, Zhan Yao tried on several pieces. Although some were not styles she usually wore, the cuts and designs truly were excellent. Zhan Yao found them pleasing, so she bought them all.
Once she grew tired from trying everything on, she sat in the VIP lounge, enjoying tea and refreshments while sending Yu Wanqiao to pay.
“Wrap up everything she tried on earlier,” Yu Wanqiao said.
Although the total price of all the clothes was astonishing, she did not even blink.
“Yes, of course.” The young woman nodded and hurriedly began packing everything. She also took the opportunity to make some conversation. “You’re her friend, aren’t you? The two of you have such a close relationship.”
Friend?
Yu Wanqiao silently looked over.
The young woman froze beneath her gaze, thinking she must have said something wrong. Although same-sex marriage was now legal, same-sex couples were still relatively uncommon in daily life.
“Or perhaps you’re… her older sister?”
“No.” Yu Wanqiao shook her head. “I’m not her sister.”
The young woman looked puzzled. “Then you are…?”
Yu Wanqiao instinctively slipped her hand into her pocket. Her fingertips gently brushed over the little red booklet resting quietly inside, just as she had already done countless times earlier.
“She is my legal spouse,” she said, giving the woman a relatively formal answer.
“She is my wife.”
