No Longer Escaping (ABO) - Chapter 39
After a period of recovery, plus Feng Aoshuang’s tough skin and Qian Yuan physique, her wounds were almost completely healed.
But the gruesome scar would probably stay with her for the rest of her life.
Every time Ren Xuemeng washed her body, she would look at the scar with a pained expression.
“It’s just a scar…” Feng Aoshuang would always say in a nonchalant tone to comfort her.
After Old Man Li’s burial, village life returned to its peaceful, former state.
During this time, Yang Lulong and the others didn’t see Xiao Wen much.
The only time Wan Niang saw her was by the river at the village entrance.
She saw her and Sister Fang together, seemingly inseparable, their lovey-dovey affection making Wan Niang feel too awkward to go over and greet them, afraid she would disturb the couple.
Yang Lulong thought that after all she’d been through, Feng Aoshuang’s bad temper would have changed.
But when she woke up from her injuries, she reverted to her old self with everyone else, only being gentle with Ren Xuemeng.
When Yang Lulong was chopping wood in the yard, that person would even bring a lounge chair and act as her supervisor, telling her what to do here and there.
This made Yang Lulong want to split her face with the axe.
She felt that her annoying temper hadn’t changed; in fact, she had gotten worse, taking advantage of her injuries.
Every time Yang Lulong talked back, she would use “Don’t forget I saved you” to counter her, a line that always worked.
Yang Lulong could only bottle up her anger and listen to her buzz like a fly in her ear.
It was better when Wan Niang was around.
At least Wan Niang would say a few words to help her, and Feng Aoshuang would obediently stop bothering her.
But as soon as Wan Niang was gone, she would come back to bother her like a moth to a flame.
The way Yang Lulong and Feng Aoshuang got along like arch-rivals made Wan Niang and Ren Xuemeng not know whether to laugh or cry.
Feng Aoshuang annoyed Yang Lulong, and Yang Lulong would mock her.
Ever since they found out that the baby would cry for no reason when Feng Aoshuang held her, but would be very well-behaved when Yang Lulong held her, Yang Lulong would carry the baby in front of Feng Aoshuang every day.
Feng Aoshuang would look on enviously, wanting to take her baby back, but the little one would be disloyal and cry as soon as she got close.
And Yang Lulong would just add fuel to the fire, “Don’t want to be held by Mother, okay okay… Auntie will hold you, don’t want Mother to hold you…”
Seeing that the baby wouldn’t let her hold her, Feng Aoshuang couldn’t get angry, afraid that her already not-so-good image in front of the baby would become even worse.
In contrast to these two’s confrontational way of getting along, Wan Niang and Ren Xuemeng’s relationship was much more harmonious.
The two of them would exchange cooking tips, academic knowledge, and child-rearing experiences.
While Yang Lulong and Feng Aoshuang would compete in chopping wood, martial arts, and who the baby liked more.
Days passed by, and it was time to say goodbye.
“I will miss you.” Ren Xuemeng and Wan Niang hugged each other goodbye, both looking sad to part.
“Me too.” Wan Niang looked down and touched the little face in Ren Xuemeng’s arms.
“Auntie Wan will miss you, too.”
“Remember to write to me,” Ren Xuemeng said with a smile.
“Of course,” Wan Niang replied with a gentle smile.
The atmosphere between the two was very friendly during their farewell.
But on the other side…
“Don’t miss me too much,” Feng Aoshuang said with a smug expression that just begged to be punched.
“I will definitely not miss you,” Yang Lulong said with a helpless look.
“Don’t you miss me either.”
“Psh, as if. I hope we never see each other again.”
“That would be wonderful,” Yang Lulong said with her arms crossed, not wanting to show any weakness.
Feng Aoshuang and Ren Xuemeng got into the carriage and rode away.
After they had gone a long way, Yang Lulong suddenly shouted, “Oh no!”
Her sudden shout startled Wan Niang, who was next to her.
“What’s wrong?”
“I didn’t get the rest of the money from her! I’m ruined!” Yang Lulong said with a look of unwillingness.
“What a loss! Ugh!”
Wan Niang looked at her and gave a helpless smile.
These two…
Winter was approaching, and it had been raining a lot lately.
The patter of the rain never seemed to stop.
Even at night, the sound of the rain was constant.
The candlelight in the room flickered.
Wan Niang squinted and carefully sewed the winter clothes she was holding.
Winter was coming soon, so she had to hurry and finish the clothes before it arrived.
The wax dripped down the side of the candle and solidified at the bottom.
The faint flame flickered, casting a soft light on Wan Niang’s face, making her features look even gentler.
Her eyes were lowered, and she was focused on her needle and thread.
Even in such poor lighting, her every stitch was precise.
She heard the rain outside gradually lessen.
Wan Niang looked up through the crack in the window.
Maybe it would be sunny tomorrow.
She hadn’t been able to sun-dry her herbs in days.
“Hoo…”
A sound from somewhere caught Wan Niang’s attention.
She looked at Yang Lulong, who was using her arm as a pillow, snoring soundly.
She was sleeping very well.
Wan Niang looked at her and smiled dotingly.
She put the clothes aside.
She also used her arm as a pillow, turned her head, and faced Yang Lulong on the table.
She watched her eyes tightly shut, her mouth open, and a rhythmic snore coming out of it, sometimes loud and sometimes soft.
Wan Niang found it amusing and didn’t rush to wake her up.
With a smile on her face, she quietly watched her snore.
The faint orange candlelight shone on Yang Lulong’s face.
Her features were more angular.
The light was blocked, with one half of her face lit and the other in the shadows.
Perhaps it was their unspoken connection, but Yang Lulong woke up without Wan Niang having to call her.
She opened her sore eyes, and Wan Niang’s face in front of her gradually became clear.
She licked her dry lips and said in a slightly hoarse voice, “Are you going to sleep?”
“Mmm,” Wan Niang replied gently.
“Do you know that you were snoring just now?”
“Huh?” Yang Lulong was still groggy from just waking up.
“Silly,” Wan Niang said in a doting tone.
She cupped Yang Lulong’s dazed face and kissed her on the mouth.
After a soft kiss, she got up and went to the bed.
“Let’s go to sleep…”
After getting into bed, Wan Niang closed her eyes, ready to fall asleep, but she felt a sense of unease.
She opened her eyes and was startled by Yang Lulong’s wide-eyed, magnified face.
“Why aren’t you sleeping yet?”
“You sleep first. I’ll sleep after you fall asleep,” Yang Lulong said in a soft voice.
“Why?”
“I’m afraid my snoring will keep you from sleeping later.”
“Even if I fall asleep, your snoring will wake me up,” Wan Niang said helplessly, pinching her silly face.
“Go to sleep…”
“I remember I didn’t use to snore…”
“It’s fine…” Wan Niang said with a smile.
“When you start snoring, I’ll just cover your mouth…”
