Pretending To Have Amnesia - Chapter 11
“Hurry up and tell me what’s going on between you and Mu Qingran.”
Qin Xin was holding a box of hazelnuts in her arms, her legs crossed on the sofa. Excited little flames burned in both her eyes, making her look exactly like a Korean auntie in a K-drama sitting by the doorway, gossiping with the neighbors about family affairs.
“What do you mean, what’s going on?” He Mu played dumb.
“I promise I’ll forget it right after listening!” Qin Xin blinked expectantly. “Hurry up and give me the full story of your love, hatred, grievances, and entanglements. Think of it as compensation for the emotional damage of having my nightmares filled with Mu Qingran, okay, okay?”
“You dreamed about Mu Qingran?” He Mu caught the main point.
“How could I not? That night, I was nearly scared to death by her eyes, okay?” Qin Xin said. “Sure enough, gentle people are even more terrifying when they get angry.”
“How did you decide she’s gentle?” He Mu asked.
“Sister Mu is pretty gentle, isn’t she? When she speaks, it’s like the hot spring water at Little South Mountain. Anyway, every time I hear her talk, all the pores on my body open up.” Qin Xin’s mouth hung open, as if drool might flow out in the next second.
“It’s just that Sister Mu doesn’t talk much, and I don’t really dare talk to her too much either.” Her tone was rather regretful.
He Mu bent her knuckles and rapped Qin Xin hard on the skull.
“What are you doing?!” Qin Xin widened her eyes and fought back without showing weakness. But not only did she fail to touch even a strand of He Mu’s hair, her wrist was twisted back instead.
He Mu narrowed her eyes and warned, “Don’t fantasize about Mu Qingran.”
Qin Xin furrowed her brows in grievance. “Is that the kind of person I am in your heart?”
He Mu did not speak, but the affirmation in her eyes was obvious.
“All right.” Qin Xin admitted it generously. “I have indeed imagined a certain romantic little…”
Seeing her friend’s face turn darker and darker, her voice grew weaker and weaker. “It was just a fantasy! Who could resist an older sister like Sister Mu, the kind who looks like she keeps people a thousand miles away, yet speaks so beautifully, abstinent and intellectual?”
He Mu looked deeply at her. “With descriptions like that, why didn’t you enter the New Oriental essay competition?”
Qin Xin chuckled. “Isn’t that because I’m low-key? What if I accidentally won first prize and got interviewed? Then the whole country would see that this child isn’t only talented but also this pretty. Maybe they’d want to come to my house and steal me.”
He Mu: “…”
There was no way to respond to that.
Qin Xin bumped He Mu with her shoulder. “So what does it feel like to date Sister Mu? Is it the kind where she’s cold to everyone but warms only you? I’m about to imagine an entire lesbian film!”
He Mu rolled her eyes. “Why don’t you try it yourself and find out?”
Qin Xin said, “If you don’t mind, I’m very okay with that!”
He Mu said, “Do you have enough time at night?”
Qin Xin tossed her hair and said confidently, “I am a time-management master of the new century.”
He Mu gave her a fake smile. “Take care of your body.”
“Then what are you planning now? Do you want to rekindle your old flame with Mu Qingran?” Qin Xin’s expression suddenly turned serious.
“You’re overthinking it.” He Mu denied it quickly. “If a snake bit me, I’d still catch it and boil it into snake soup. If someone wrongs me, of course I have to repay an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.”
Qin Xin shrugged, and it was unclear whether she believed her or not.
“Oh, right. The thing you mentioned to me before—I took care of it for you.” She changed the subject.
“Thanks,” He Mu said.
“And you still say you don’t want to rekindle your old flame? Asking me to find solid proof of President Sun messing around with women—isn’t that because you want to help Mu Qingran vent her anger?” Qin Xin circled the topic right back.
She was honestly a little curious. If she had not accidentally overheard that President Sun wanted to keep Mu Qingran as his mistress that day, or if she had heard it but not told He Mu, how would things have developed?
Perhaps there were no such ifs. Some things were simply destined in the unseen.
He Mu placed her feet on the edge of the rocking chair and leaned back slightly, saying leisurely, “A tiger of an older sister doesn’t have a dog of a younger sister. Ms. He Jinzhou is so impressive. Would I spend all day thinking only about love and romance? Letting a good-for-nothing occupy such a large shareholder position in KM would make me look very incompetent. President Sun should move his backside.”
“All right, all right. You have ambition and aspirations!” Qin Xin’s expression gradually turned infatuated. “But Sister Jinzhou really is amazing. A couple of days ago, I saw a post about her on an official account. Public support for her inheriting He Group is far ahead of your brother.”
“Don’t you have any improper thoughts about my sister,” He Mu said.
Qin Xin gave a “hmph.” “I have dignity, okay? I would never be a third party. Besides, I ship Sister Jinzhou and brother-in-law’s immortal couple pairing, all right?”
The phone on the table suddenly rang a few times.
“Ah! The drama I’m following updated!” Qin Xin happily picked up her phone and cast it onto the room’s television. It was a currently popular, female-lead workplace power-fantasy drama.
He Mu smiled and shook her head. Sometimes, she was very envious that her friend could enjoy the moment so promptly, freely, and carefreely.
Her eldest sister carried the halo of being the eldest daughter of the He family, was an Ivy League elite, commanded thunderous force in the business world, and also had a husband whose family background matched hers. In public, husband and wife were harmonious and treated each other with respectful courtesy. To ordinary people, her life was practically the cheat-code life of a power-fantasy heroine.
But He Mu knew that her eldest sister was ruthless to others and even more ruthless to herself. That was the only reason she had everything she had today.
She had once personally witnessed how her eldest sister cut away everything that obstructed her before becoming the He Jinzhou who now made people both envy and fear her.
Every year, He Group held a Youth Entrepreneurship Competition. The entrepreneur who won first prize could receive resource support from He Group.
This year, He Jinzhou, head of the Development Business Department, served as the chair of the competition.
The competition was divided into three stages. For the final presentation and evaluation stage, many prominent business figures would be invited to attend. It could be regarded as an industry exchange conference led by He Group.
After the morning speeches ended, all kinds of business elites walked out of the venue.
Outside the irregular arched building was a huge plaza. Silver firs stood all around it. Yellow silver-fir leaves drifted in the wind, and in the end, they inevitably fell to the ground, where people’s shoe prints were left behind on them.
“Department Head He really is impressive. Quietly and without a sound, you’ve snatched another city from my hands.” Yue Yanxi smiled as she walked toward He Jinzhou.
After stopping in front of her, she plucked a fan-shaped silver-fir leaf from the other woman’s shoulder and held it in her hand to toy with.
The person stopping He Jinzhou was the only daughter of Yuehui Group’s current head. She was around the same age as He Jinzhou and was Yuehui Group’s sole heir.
He Group was a rising star, but in recent years, many of its businesses had slowly been eating away at Yuehui Group’s market. Recently, it had also snatched KM’s core technology, openly declaring to Yuehui Group that it intended to challenge the position of the industry leader.
“President Yue flatters me,” He Jinzhou said with a calm smile.
“I’m very curious. How did your younger sister persuade President Mu to give up joining Yuehui Group? What was it that was even more tempting than the conditions I offered?” Yue Yanxi asked.
“Sorry, no comment,” He Jinzhou said.
Yue Yanxi tossed away the leaf in her hand and slipped her hands into the pockets of her trench coat. “The scene of Department Head He and her husband walking the red carpet was truly harmonious as qin and se, a match made in heaven.”
Her words came without beginning or end, and her tone was full of mockery.
“Thank you.”
A few days ago, He Jinzhou and her husband had attended the Qiantang Charity Gala, and the reports from all the major media had given them considerable coverage.
“The wind is picking up. Get in the car.” Yue Yanxi shifted aside, clearing the path ahead.
He Jinzhou nodded slightly and got into the back seat of the Bentley. The driver closed the car door from outside.
In the rearview mirror, Yue Yanxi’s slender figure never turned around and never left. Only when the car drove onto the main road did the rearview mirror finally stop catching any trace of her.
He Jinzhou closed her eyes and gently rubbed her temples.
KM president’s office.
Mu Qingran stood in front of the shredder, dazed.
After a long while, she placed the document inside and pressed the switch. The document was swallowed into the belly of the machine monster’s enormous mouth and turned into fragments.
It was the acquisition agreement with Yuehui Group.
