Pretending To Have Amnesia - Chapter 14
Mu Qingran closed her eyes for a moment, then turned around, her expression calm as ever.
“After I clink glasses with everyone at the table, I’ll be allowed to leave? Mr. Li, please make the rules clear this time.”
Li Nan smiled and nodded. “Of course. I wouldn’t deliberately make things difficult for a woman either.”
That contemptuous tone, as though women were beneath notice, angered Mu Qingran. But she would not allow such emotions to remain for too long. Only the incompetent were controlled by emotion.
Mu Qingran picked up the small glass liquor server on the table, filled the little cup she had drunk from earlier, and walked to the woman sitting closest to her. This was also the only other woman at the table besides herself.
“Mrs. Wang.” Mu Qingran recognized her. They had met once before at a charity gala.
The woman seemed not to have expected Mu Qingran to remember her. Flattered, she hurriedly stood and held her small wine cup with both hands to clink glasses with her.
Sitting beside the woman was her husband. Seeing that Mu Qingran had already drunk so much, he could not bear it and also stood with his cup in hand. “We’re one family. President Mu can drink one cup for both of us. I imagine everyone at the table won’t mind such a small detail, right?”
Li Nan said nothing, which counted as tacit agreement.
Mu Qingran drank the wine in her cup, smiled at the two of them, and walked to the next person.
Her memory was excellent. Anyone she had met once, she could match to a name. After making her way around half the table, not only was her posture still ramrod straight, but her speech was not muddled in the slightest. More importantly, she had not addressed a single person incorrectly.
The several bosses at the table who had been forced to attend this drinking party reluctantly gained a little more admiration for Mu Qingran. It was only because their interests were involved that all they could do was express some respect while clinking glasses and sigh helplessly.
But they all thought the same thing: if there was a chance in the future, they must work with this woman at least once.
Mu Qingran walked to Sun Xiang and shook the liquor server. Only a shallow layer remained at the bottom.
“President Sun.” She revealed a faint smile. “Our connection runs the deepest. I’ll toast you twice.”
Sun Xiang clearly had not expected that after drinking around the whole table, Mu Qingran would still make such a request. He froze slightly.
Mu Qingran took the lead and drank the wine in her own cup, then showed Sun Xiang the bottom.
Naturally, Sun Xiang would not show weakness. He quickly drained his too.
Just as Mu Qingran was about to drink the second cup, Li Nan seemed to suddenly feel some tender pity for the beauty and spoke up. “President Sun, you’re a grown man. Shouldn’t you drink one cup on her behalf?”
Sun Xiang had actually already drunk too much. At this moment, his stomach was churning violently, and he could not help wanting to vomit. He truly could not drink anymore. But in front of the whole table, with Li Nan having spoken, he could only be forced onto the stage. He had the server pour two cups for him and painfully swallowed them down.
Mu Qingran then walked a few steps forward. “Perfect. This final cup, I toast Mr. Li.”
Li Nan felt his bones go soft from that one “Mr. Li.”
Although Mu Qingran was no fresh young woman in her early twenties, she had an indescribable charm about her. Instead, that made her even more enticing than some ignorant little girl.
To him, women were born to be men’s spoils of war. Whether they were obedient or fierce, deep down, they all wanted to be conquered, and he was very willing to offer that help.
The woman before him was a type he had never tried before, and uncontrollable excitement rose in his heart.
Li Nan lifted his head and drank the wine in his cup. The drunkenness grew stronger, and his neck and face flushed scarlet.
Mu Qingran handed the liquor server and wine cup to the server, then once again took her leave.
But before she had taken even three steps, Li Nan grabbed her wrist.
“Mu Qingran, right? Nice name. Pretty person too.” A smile appeared on Li Nan’s face, vulgar and completely undisguised.
Mu Qingran fell into a brief daze.
—“Mu Qingran. Your name is nice, and you’re pretty too. Can I sometimes not call you Sister, and call you by your name instead? Is that okay?”
They were clearly the same words, yet when spoken from certain people’s mouths, they became incomparably disgusting.
Seeing that she did not resist, Li Nan grew even more aggressive. “What client is so important that President Mu has to personally accompany them? Actually, if President Mu thinks carefully, accompanying me brings far more benefits than accompanying ten clients.” As he spoke, he swallowed several times.
A chill rose in Mu Qingran’s eyes. Lowering her voice, she said, “I don’t like using trump cards lightly, but people who treat me like an easy target have never ended well.”
For her to start from nothing and reach where she was today, she had relied not only on professional ability, but also on means of self-protection prepared before the storm.
It was not only Li Nan. For several notorious scoundrels in Nancheng, she held at least one piece of evidence on each of them that could destroy half their life.
But unless absolutely necessary, she would not reveal such cards. After all, harming the enemy by a thousand while damaging oneself by eight hundred was not worth it.
“What do you mean?” Li Nan’s mind was muddled, and he did not understand her hint.
At that moment, the private room door swung inward. Before the people inside could react, the person at the door had already strode up to Li Nan.
A clean, sharp right hook.
“Let go of your filthy hand!” He Mu did not think further. She grabbed Mu Qingran’s wrist and pulled her behind herself.
At this moment, a crack finally appeared in Mu Qingran’s composed face. It was a rare anger born from being put in such a wretched state.
“You stinking woman, you dare hit me?!” Li Nan covered the eye that had been punched. His shout cracked with anger, like a broken gong being struck.
“You’re exactly the one I’m hitting! A dog relying on another’s power!”
“You dare talk to me like that, you—”
Before the dog of a man could shut his mouth, He Mu threw another left hook, giving him a symmetrical pair of panda eyes.
Even boxing coaches could not withstand He Mu’s fists, much less someone who drank every day and looked strong on the outside but was hollow within.
Li Nan stumbled back several steps, crashed into a chair, and fell down with it.
When had he ever suffered this kind of humiliation? Burning with rage, he staggered to his feet and raised his hand to slap the woman in front of him.
At that moment, Sun Xiang sobered up halfway and hurriedly reached out to grab Li Nan’s arm. “Brother Nan! We grown men don’t need to argue with women. Calm down.”
He had thought He Mu was the same as him, simply chasing novelty and casually playing around with Mu Qingran. If he had known earlier that she would become angry enough to hit someone over a woman, he absolutely would not have acted on a moment of spite and made things difficult for Mu Qingran.
But it was already too late for regret.
It did not matter if Li Nan got beaten. But if this eldest young lady were beaten, and the He family came asking for accountability, he would also be dragged down and punished.
“Fuck! Which side are you on?!” Li Nan cursed as he kicked Sun Xiang. By coincidence, his foot landed right on Sun Xiang’s most vital place.
Sun Xiang instantly broke out in sweat across his forehead. Holding the injured spot, he dropped to his knees. His stomach churned even more violently, and he directly vomited. Under the influence of alcohol, his whole body went limp, and when he failed to hold himself up, he collapsed, half his head landing in his own vomit.
“The wine on this table must be pretty expensive. Do you know how hard civil servants work these days studying clean-government discipline? A piece of trash like you, who abuses power through family connections, should be keeping your tail tucked between your legs. Yet you still dare bark wildly. What, you think this place is small enough that even the king of heaven can’t manage you?”
Normally, He Mu’s accent was not audible when she spoke. But now, a strong Beijing accent came out.
“You think I’ve never heard people say bullshit like that before? The people who dared say those words in the end still had to kneel down and kowtow! Too bad they were all turned by me into things worse than dogs!” The alcohol surged to Li Nan’s head, and he directly pulled open his belt. “I think you’re pretty. When you kneel, besides kowtowing, there are other things you can do too. If you make me comfortable, maybe I’ll consider taking you in.”
