Chapter 8
It was raining, and the air felt oppressively humid. Carried by the wind, raindrops struck the glass with vicious force.
Sang Ning always felt that rain at this time of year carried winter’s bitter chill.
When she was young, everyone said she and Sang Pingyan looked like twins.
Of course they looked alike. Their genetic similarity was extraordinarily high. They were two children fathered by the same man with two women who were full biological sisters. How could they not resemble twins?
Sang Ning shifted her gaze from the rain outside the window to the woman before her.
The woman wore a brown coat and was smiling at her with exceptional gentleness.
They were not alike.
Not in the slightest.
Their eyes met. Sang Ning traced circles around her coffee cup with one finger before speaking.
“I’m not going back to the Sang residence. Tell them to stop wasting their time. They sent you this time. Who will they send next?”
“Please also tell them that I didn’t return to become a pawn in one of their arranged marriages. They can continue pretending I died overseas.”
She forced a cordial smile at Sang Pingyan.
“Ningning, Father and Auntie didn’t mean anything by it. They simply miss you…”
“That’s enough. Don’t call me so affectionately. I don’t like hearing it. They miss me? Listen to those words yourself. Do you believe them? Why didn’t they say they missed me when they sent me abroad alone?”
“Sorry, but I have a meeting soon. I’ll be leaving.”
Sang Ning had already turned away when she suddenly appeared to remember something. Looking back, she said to Sang Pingyan, “Sister, do you still like Eldest Miss Yan? She’s been pursuing me lately. You could ask whether she’d be willing to keep you as my substitute.”
Sang Pingyan’s expression instantly darkened, becoming almost distorted.
Satisfied, Sang Ning turned away.
When she reached the counter, she told an employee, “In twenty minutes, please deliver twenty cups of… to Teaching Building Ten. Thank you.”
She opened her umbrella and stepped into the rain.
After everything the past few years had made of her, Sang Ning thought she truly had developed a vicious personality.
Compared with Sang Pingyan, whom everyone had regarded as the perfect daughter since childhood, Sang Ning was practically the piece of garbage piled highest in the dumpster.
She could already imagine how Sang Yehai would react to what she had just said.
He would condemn her for lacking even the slightest refinement expected of a young lady from a distinguished family and berate her for disgracing the Sang name.
The current Mrs. Sang would cooperate with him by standing beside them and comforting her.
“Your father is right. You should learn from your sister.”
Sang Ning had not known how to argue back then.
She knew how to curse them now.
What was she supposed to learn from Sang Pingyan?
Should she learn how to be a two-faced white lotus? How to string along poor people while licking the boots of the rich?
What dignity did the Sang family have left? Sang Yehai had nearly squandered the entire company her grandfather left behind.
That old dog Sang Yehai was certainly talented at bootlicking. Otherwise, the Sang family would have collapsed long ago.
Ten years earlier, that old dog had already been planning to marry Sang Pingyan into the Yan family and bring glory to their household.
Sang Ning did not know what had ultimately happened between Yan Qiuheng and Sang Pingyan. Before she went abroad, she remembered that the two appeared to be dating.
In retrospect, Yan Qiuheng had apparently never been serious about anyone.
Yan Qiuheng had always been so cold and distant, yet she had acted exceptionally close to Sang Pingyan. Sang Ning had assumed they were genuinely in love.
Apparently, she had thought too much.
Sang Yehai had obviously heard about what was happening between Yan Qiuheng and her.
Eldest Miss Yan had been pursuing someone for several months without receiving her consent. Sang Yehai must be eager to summon Sang Ning home, wrap her up, and send her off to be married.
He had little actual ability, but he certainly had plenty of grand ideas.
Sang Ning put down the materials in her hands.
“Let’s begin the meeting.”
Qu Manyan did not know that Yan Qiuheng had been pestering Sang Ning recently.
Sang Ning did not fully understand what had transpired between Qu Manyan and Yan Qiuheng’s father. Qu Manyan had never belonged to Haicheng’s social circle of wealthy wives. During their friendship, Sang Ning had never heard her discuss her husband either. She had only said that she was divorced.
The mother was the mother, and the daughter was the daughter.
Yan Qiuheng’s appearance had not affected Sang Ning’s friendship with Teacher Qu in the slightest. Whenever Qu Manyan invited her somewhere, Sang Ning never refused.
Yan Qiuheng also seemed intent on avoiding her mother. Whenever the two women arranged to meet, she never inserted herself between them.
Just as Sang Ning had said, she was now capable of viewing things with an open mind.
She allowed Yan Qiuheng to decide how to handle Yan Qing, giving her only one requirement: Yan Qing had to be released alive in the end.
Yan Qiuheng nodded to show that she understood, then immediately asked whether Sang Ning needed anyone else captured.
“Do you need someone seized on your end too? Who should I hand them over to, and where? Would you like me to deliver them personally?”
Sang Ning genuinely wanted to reach through the internet, pat Yan Qiuheng on the shoulder, and tell her:
Chairwoman Yan, right now, you’re acting exactly like my dog.

Sorry. I don’t know what kind of strange nonsense I’m writing either.
