What Should I Do If I Wake Up and It’s the Apocalypse? (GL) - Chapter 4
She had no idea where the zombie that had forced Mu Xiao into An Qi’s home earlier had gone, but this trip was unexpectedly smooth.
No more zombies appeared in the corridor. Even when Mu Xiao carefully returned to her own place, the door was still wide open, and there were likewise no zombies inside.
The door still had that glaring claw mark on it, one that had nearly pierced through the entire panel. Mu Xiao could not help looking at it closely for a couple of seconds.
“I hope the zombie that left this has already left this building…” she muttered. Without stopping for even a moment, she rushed into the apartment she had already confirmed was safe. Of course, this time she closed the door behind her.
Mu Xiao did not want to be halfway through packing when a zombie suddenly pounced on her from behind for some intimate contact.
First, she found her phone and stuffed it into her pocket.
Then Mu Xiao looked around the room. In the end, she still grabbed the hiking backpack placed nearby and swept the compressed biscuits, jerky, chocolate, and other things on the table into it. Of course, she did not forget those bottles of water—although they were very heavy.
The hiking backpack immediately bulged up. Mu Xiao looked inside. It was about half full. She zipped it up and slung it onto her back—
It had felt quite heavy when she was carrying it by hand, but it was a professional hiking backpack after all. The frame was very well made, and once it was on her back, her shoulders could still bear the weight.
“It seems like the temperature in the apocalypse might not be easy to predict either.” Mu Xiao did not leave immediately. She carefully recalled all the messy apocalypse novels she had read before while looking around the room. In the end, her gaze fell on the wardrobe.
She quickly walked over and pulled the wardrobe open. Something fell out from inside. Mu Xiao instinctively lifted her foot in a hurry, just barely avoiding having it smash onto the top of her foot.
When she looked closely, it was actually a military knife.
Although she could not name it, Mu Xiao at least did not mistake this knife for a fruit knife, because it was fixed to a belt. Mu Xiao picked up the camouflage belt and compared it to her waist. Sure enough, it was her size.
“I keep feeling like letting me transmigrate into this body is kind of a waste of good material,” Mu Xiao could not help complaining. Without the slightest psychological burden, she fastened the belt properly, shifted the knife to the small of her back, and used the hiking backpack to cover it.
There were not many clothes in the wardrobe. Mu Xiao immediately noticed a neatly folded set of outdoor assault clothing placed to the side. Without even thinking, she knew it had to be another good item. She took off the backpack. After a brief hesitation, she dumped out all the food inside in one go, took the two or three pieces of clothing that had been placed separately and put them at the bottom, then packed the food back in bit by bit. Finally, she covered everything with that assault jacket at the very top.
After shouldering the backpack again, Mu Xiao felt that she had already tried her best to think of everything she could, including certain feminine products she had tucked into one side of the bag. She refused to think about how awkward those few days would be when she actually had to use those things!
Lastly, Mu Xiao also put away the map the original owner had prepared into a small pocket. After confirming everything once more, she picked up the clothes-drying pole that had been set aside.
No matter what, she could go back and find An Qi now.
She wondered if the little girl had been too scared staying alone.
When she opened the door, Mu Xiao still maintained enough caution.
There were no zombies outside.
Of course, she did not know what effect the claw mark on the door had. At the very least, she let out a breath and felt lucky for herself.
But immediately after, she heard a strange scraping sound coming from down the corridor.
Mu Xiao’s expression changed at once. That direction was the direction she had come from. Mixed in with the strange scraping sound were zombie roars.
Those roars were muffled. No matter how she listened to them, something sounded wrong!
Mu Xiao immediately picked up the clothes-drying pole and stepped outside. But then, suddenly, she ran back into the room, grabbed the two thick, soft pillows from the bed, and quickly walked down the corridor toward An Qi’s apartment.
Holding the pillows in front of herself as a cushion, Mu Xiao swiftly turned the corner. When she saw the zombies, her face turned green.
Two zombies were gathered outside An Qi’s door. One was clawing at the door, while the other was actually stuck in the door, with only the part below its chest exposed outside!
Mu Xiao’s head heated up, and it was as if a fire had ignited in her heart. How was An Qi inside the room? Had any zombies already gotten in?!
Her body moved before her brain could react. Holding the two pillows, she charged at the zombies as fast as she could.
The zombie scratching at the door heard the movement and had only just turned its head. Before it could even let out a roar at the fresh food that had suddenly appeared, its entire mouth was stuffed shut by a pillow. Behind the pillow came a tremendous force, pushing the zombie back.
But behind the zombie was another zombie stuck in the door. As it retreated, it was blocked by its companion and tripped, falling backward.
Mu Xiao, who had caused all of this, also lunged forward because of inertia. Her full body weight, plus the heavy weight of the backpack, pressed down hard on the zombie through the pillow.
Crack—
Mu Xiao seemed to hear a crisp snapping sound from close by.
Thinking that the zombie was only two pillows away from her, Mu Xiao forcibly carried the weight on her back and jumped up. With both hands, she raised the clothes-drying pole she had never let go of and stabbed down with force. Through the pillow, she used her body weight to firmly pin the zombie down, while also stepping on it hard with her foot.
The zombie beneath the pillow let out muffled whimpers. Its mouth was completely blocked by the pillow, and because of the pillow’s obstruction, its hands could only lift a little. It could not even touch the hem of Mu Xiao’s pants.
Then Mu Xiao looked at the zombie stuck in the door. First she froze, then she did not know whether to laugh or cry.
Was she blessed by the lucky stars? Was this the legendary protagonist halo?
The zombie was stuck there motionlessly, its entire waist hanging limply. A small piece of bone had even pierced through its decayed skin and was exposed outside. It turned out that the snapping sound she had heard just now had been this zombie’s lumbar spine breaking.
“Sister, is that Mu Xiao Sister?” An Qi’s voice came from inside the door, carrying a sobbing tone.
Mu Xiao was delighted and hurriedly spoke. “It’s me, An Qi. Are there any other zombies inside? How are you?”
“Wu—no, there aren’t. There’s only one on the door. It’s not moving anymore.” An Qi sounded very frightened, but she still answered Mu Xiao’s questions properly.
Mu Xiao finally let out a breath of relief. “It’s good that you’re okay.”
By the time she said the last part, she realized that her voice had actually choked up a little. Only then did she notice that even her eyes were burning.
When she had seen the situation in front of An Qi’s door just now, Mu Xiao’s mind had been filled with regret and fear!
She had actually let An Qi, a little girl, stay in the apartment alone. If something had happened to An Qi, Mu Xiao could not imagine what she would have done. At that moment, she had been filled with self-blame over her own cowardice.
Fortunately, An Qi was fine.
“Sister, should I open the door?” An Qi’s question came from inside the door again, carrying a faint urgency.
Mu Xiao lowered her head and looked at the zombie completely blocked by the pillow, then grinned. It seemed the little girl depended on her quite a bit.
Before she could finish feeling smug, Mu Xiao suddenly felt the hairs on her body stand on end. A bone-chilling sense of crisis made her instinctively let go and run. Sure enough, from not far behind her, a broken zombie roar rang out!
