What Should I Do If I Wake Up and It’s the Apocalypse? (GL) - Chapter 5
She had only run two steps when Mu Xiao felt a sharp pain come from her back. Something scraped across the right side of her back, and because the force was too great, her legs had no time to react. Her entire body was shoved forward, and she fell face-first onto the floor.
Immediately after, a pole struck the ground with a thud right beside Mu Xiao’s face, almost grazing her cheek as it nailed heavily into the floor.
The tip of the pole was jagged and uneven, and there was still a little blood on it.
Most likely hers.
Her back burned with pain. The zombie’s roar was right above her head. Mu Xiao’s heart felt as if it were riding a roller coaster.
She might as well have been scratched by a zombie, then hidden somewhere and waited to turn into one! Mu Xiao screamed inwardly, yet she still used both hands and feet to crawl away, managing to escape the zombie’s attack range before it could grab her.
This was the zombie whose mouth Mu Xiao had blocked with the broom at the very beginning.
Who knew what had happened to it, but the broom head was already gone, leaving only a broken end. It was that broken end that had stabbed Mu Xiao in the back just now, and it still hurt terribly.
Because of this broken broom handle, the zombie’s attack on Mu Xiao was interrupted. It was stuck diagonally there, forced to watch helplessly as Mu Xiao retreated out of its attack range.
The zombie became even angrier.
It staggered forward with the broom handle still lodged in place, pouncing at Mu Xiao again.
Mu Xiao gritted her teeth and forcefully caught the broom handle as the zombie rushed over. She clutched it tightly and took two steps back, resisting the backward momentum as she locked herself in a contest of strength with the zombie.
The zombie had no sense of pain. It glared at Mu Xiao with eyeballs that almost seemed ready to pop out of their sockets, both hands stretching toward her. Its strength was shockingly great. Mu Xiao knew she could not hold out for long, and her gaze swept around before landing on the end of the corridor.
There was a window there. For ventilation in the stairwell, as long as it was not raining, the cleaning auntie would open the windows on every floor early in the morning.
In the corridor leading to that window, aside from the zombie she was holding back, there was also another one still lying on the ground, which might shake off the pillow and stand up at any moment.
“Mu Xiao Sister?” An Qi’s trembling voice came from inside.
She had heard the zombie’s roar earlier, so she had not dared make another sound. But An Qi, waiting inside the apartment, had waited for quite a while without hearing any other movement.
She was scared.
That call seemed to inject Mu Xiao with a shot of adrenaline.
She adjusted the position of her hands. Her left palm pressed against the end of the broom, ignoring the sharp splinters stabbing into her palm, and she charged toward the zombie in one breath.
Who knew where the strength came from, but Mu Xiao actually pushed the zombie backward again and again, stepping over the zombie that had finally managed to start getting up, and shoved the one in front of her completely out the window.
The sound of a heavy object hitting the ground came from outside.
Mu Xiao leaned out and looked down. The zombie had fallen there in a black heap, and some kind of liquid seemed to have splattered around it. Not far from there, beside a flowerbed, a zombie had probably heard the sound and staggered over. But it only circled the fallen zombie twice, searching blankly for the source of the noise.
Mu Xiao forced herself to look carefully at that zombie’s condition. Then she turned around, raised the clothes-drying pole, and ran back in a few steps. Facing the zombie’s head beneath the pillow, she stabbed hard and pulled it out.
Several drops of thick white brain matter were brought out by the clothes-drying pole and fell onto Mu Xiao’s shoes.
Mu Xiao stared fixedly at the zombie. Only after confirming that it truly was no longer moving did she look at the top of her shoe in disgust and lean against the wall to search for the key.
Perhaps because she had overexerted herself, even such a small key would not stay steady in Mu Xiao’s hand.
Once all the danger had temporarily been resolved, Mu Xiao’s hand began trembling uncontrollably. For a long while, she could not even take the key out of her pocket.
After failing twice, Mu Xiao finally let out a breath and compromised, calling toward the door, “Be good, An Qi. Help Sister open the door.”
The door opened immediately.
An Qi’s eyes were red. She quickly opened the door to let Mu Xiao in, then closed and locked it again.
Mu Xiao barely leaned against the wall. When she turned her head, she saw that An Qi was clearly afraid of the zombie stuck in the door. But no matter how scared she was, the moment she heard Mu Xiao’s voice, she still opened the door right away.
Mu Xiao had no doubt that An Qi had already been waiting behind the door before she called out.
Mu Xiao sat directly on the floor and revealed a smile. “Don’t be afraid, An Qi. There’s no danger for now.”
An Qi came to Mu Xiao in two or three steps. Instead, she was frightened by Mu Xiao’s weak appearance, unable to stand.
“Mu Xiao Sister, what’s wrong? Are you hurt?”
Mu Xiao had not expected to scare An Qi again and felt a little embarrassed.
“Sister isn’t very brave either, and I don’t have much ability. I used up all my strength outside just now and scraped my skin a little. Luckily, my luck wasn’t bad, and I dealt with the zombies.”
An Qi hurriedly shook her head. “Sister is amazing!”
A child’s thoughts were the purest. These zombies were terrifying, and Mu Xiao had been able to defeat them.
Facing An Qi’s admiring gaze, Mu Xiao instead grew embarrassed. She chuckled twice, then found a topic to shift the conversation.
“An Qi, can you help Sister bring over the alcohol pads and bandages?”
When she had helped An Qi apply medicine to her forehead earlier, Mu Xiao had seen those two things in the drawer at her home.
Hearing that she could help, An Qi immediately ran over to get the medicine.
As for Mu Xiao, thinking about how An Qi trusted her so unconditionally, she could not help smiling bitterly and tugging at the corners of her mouth. Before An Qi returned, she smoothed away her miserable expression.
What should she do? She kept feeling like she had no choice but to accept her fate and find a way to survive.
With An Qi’s help, the wounds on Mu Xiao’s left palm and back were given a simple and rough treatment, then covered with bandages to prevent infection. Who knew what exactly had caused the zombies in this apocalypse?
Because she had taken off her top to treat the wounds, Mu Xiao only now discovered that there was also a red patch on her arm. Some tiny bruised spots had already appeared on it, and it ached dully when pressed. After thinking back for a while, she finally remembered that it had been caused when she left An Qi’s home earlier and the door hit her because of the zombie’s sudden attack.
Since her body was still somewhat drained of strength, especially her arms, Mu Xiao motioned for An Qi to take the phone out of her pocket and call her mother’s number.
The phone still had signal. The call went through smoothly, but after waiting for quite a while, no one picked up on the other end.
Watching An Qi hold back tears as she dialed the number again, Mu Xiao’s heart sank to the bottom. This could not be considered good news.
After An Qi dialed for the third time and still no one answered, Mu Xiao reached out and took the phone, stopping An Qi from repeating the action mechanically again.
Seeing An Qi’s shoulders shaking, Mu Xiao secretly sighed and placed her hand on An Qi’s head.
“Don’t worry. It’s chaotic outside. Maybe your mom forgot to bring her phone.”
Seeing that An Qi still had her head lowered, Mu Xiao made her tone lighter.
“After I rest for a while, we’ll go find your mom.”
An Qi abruptly raised her head and looked at Mu Xiao in surprise.
Mu Xiao, however, grinned with a carefree smile. “What, you don’t trust Sister?”
An Qi shook her head, revealing a trace of conflicted emotion.
“But there are so many monsters… zombies outside. Sister is hurt too.”
“What does this little injury count for?” Mu Xiao interrupted An Qi. “Little girl, you don’t need to worry about so much. Even if this had nothing to do with you, I’d have to leave this place sooner or later anyway. Tell me where your mom works. I’ll take you over to look for her. It’ll just be on the way.”
“But…” An Qi was still a little hesitant. She carefully looked at the zombie stuck in the door, then hurriedly withdrew her gaze.
“Otherwise, should An Qi continue staying here?” Mu Xiao asked deliberately.
Sure enough, before An Qi could even react, she hurriedly shook her head.
“Hahaha.” Mu Xiao could not help laughing. Seeing that An Qi was growing a little anxious, she finally stopped. “It’s just that, An Qi, we don’t know how many zombies we’ll run into along the way. I can’t guarantee that I’ll definitely be able to keep you safe. But I’ll do everything I can.”
An Qi quickly grabbed Mu Xiao’s hand.
“Mu Xiao Sister, thank you.”
Inside the apartment, one adult and one child looked at each other. The despair of the apocalypse finally faded a little.
Just then, a sound interrupted the atmosphere in the room.
Growl—
