What Should I Do If I Wake Up and It’s the Apocalypse? (GL) - Chapter 7
An Qi was still rather nervous. As soon as she saw the elevator doors open, she could not wait to walk inside.
But Mu Xiao reached out, hooked a finger around An Qi’s backpack, and dragged the little girl back out.
“We’re not going in,” she quickly said to An Qi, lowering her voice for fear that any sound might attract some unexpected accident and ruin her arrangement.
This was the first plan she had designed after coming here, even if it was only a small trick.
An Qi was very obedient and stood still beside Mu Xiao.
Mu Xiao quickly pressed the buttons for all the floors from the sixth to the first, lighting them all up. Before the elevator doors opened again, she left the elevator.
Watching the doors slowly close, Mu Xiao took An Qi into the stairwell beside it.
This apartment building had been built quite well. The stairwell was also cleaned every day, and there were windows on every floor letting in light, so walking through it did not feel too unsafe.
Although the doors leading to the corridors did not have locks, very few people took the stairs, so the stairwell was quiet, and the floor was much cleaner too.
The process of going downstairs was unexpectedly smooth. It was not until they reached the second floor that a different scene appeared.
On the ground in front of the door leading from the second floor to the elevator area, there was a large patch of splattered blood. There were even some chunks scattered in the corners.
Mu Xiao tightened her grip on An Qi’s hand. She wanted to cover An Qi’s eyes, but in the end, she still did not do it.
Although the shapes of those chunks could not be made out, they were most likely pieces of flesh.
They would see more bloody scenes in the future. Mu Xiao’s stomach twisted a little, but in the end, she forced it down.
She glanced at An Qi. The little girl’s face was deathly pale, and she was covering her mouth, clearly forcing herself to endure it. Fear showed in her eyes.
Mu Xiao reached out and rubbed her head, then made a “shh” gesture at her and pointed at the door leading to the elevator area.
She let go of An Qi and had her stay still for now, then carefully moved to the door and looked inside through the glass window at the top.
In front of the elevator lay a mangled corpse. Even the head was gone, and the abdomen had been torn open into a bloody gash. However, there was no sign of any zombies.
She tilted her head and looked at the display above the elevator. The elevator had stopped on the first floor. Earlier, she had pressed the buttons for every floor precisely so the elevator would stop floor by floor, using the sound of the elevator arriving and the doors opening to attract zombies. It seemed she had mostly achieved the effect she wanted.
After confirming that there was no problem on the other side of the door, Mu Xiao finally breathed a sigh of relief and waved An Qi over.
An Qi immediately ran to Mu Xiao’s side and pressed close to her.
Mu Xiao whispered to her, “There are probably quite a lot of zombies on the first floor. We have to jump out the window. Are you scared?”
An Qi bit her lip, then quickly shook her head. “I’m not scared!”
Mu Xiao smiled and patted An Qi’s shoulder, then walked to the window nearby.
Back on the seventh floor, she had already confirmed the direction. The window here faced north, exactly opposite from the main entrance—from the very beginning, she had never planned to go through the first floor.
Below the window was a flowerbed planted with grass. There were no traces of zombies nearby. A little farther out was the fence surrounding the residential complex, and beyond the fence was a small road that looked fairly quiet. The metal fence had many decorative patterns on it and did not seem difficult to climb.
Mu Xiao carefully opened the window, lifted An Qi up, and had her sit on the window frame first. Then Mu Xiao climbed onto the frame herself.
The height of the second floor was not exactly low. At the very least, no one would casually jump from the second floor for fun. So when Mu Xiao looked at the ground, she inevitably felt a little guilty. But there was no room for hesitation, so she could only grit her teeth and jump down.
In Mu Xiao’s expectations, she knew that after jumping down, she had to immediately bend her knees. Ideally, she would even roll, which could reduce the impact of the fall as much as possible. However, reality was cruel. She did not have that ability. She jumped down stiffly just like that and landed so hard that it felt as if her butt had split into four pieces.
It hurt, but fortunately, she had not broken her legs, and it did not affect her next movements.
After confirming that the surroundings were safe, Mu Xiao raised her head and signaled for An Qi to jump toward her.
An Qi was also scared staying alone in that bloody space. After receiving Mu Xiao’s signal, she did not hesitate and jumped down.
Mu Xiao caught An Qi steadily. The force of her fall pulled Mu Xiao’s arms painfully, and only after grimacing for a while did she put An Qi down.
“Well done, An Qi. Next, we have to climb over this. Can you do it?”
“An Qi definitely can!” An Qi’s eyes were filled with determination.
And so, Mu Xiao brought An Qi to the railing and supported her as she first reached the lowest decorative pattern. Mu Xiao lifted her head and watched An Qi climb up little by little, ready to prevent her from falling.
To be honest, that feeling made Mu Xiao even more nervous than climbing herself.
Fortunately, An Qi was quite capable. She worked hard and climbed all the way to the top, then sat astride the top of the railing.
“Don’t move yet. Wait until Sister gets over before you come down.” Mu Xiao immediately called for her to stop. Because one of them was high and the other low, her voice became a little louder.
After saying that, Mu Xiao suddenly jumped up and hooked herself onto the railing, then climbed over in a few quick movements.
The wound on her palm throbbed faintly, but Mu Xiao discovered that she, who used to howl for ages over the slightest pain, actually did not care anymore. That saying was true after all—where there was pressure, there was motivation.
The zombies were very cooperative with Mu Xiao’s outing this time. They actually had no intention of joining the excitement at all.
Even after Mu Xiao climbed over the railing, jumped down cleanly, and caught An Qi, no zombies appeared on the small road.
This made Mu Xiao’s mood especially cheerful.
However, the first difficulty now appeared.
She needed to find the way.
According to An Qi, her mother worked at a hospital not too far from this residential complex. However, whenever An Qi came and went, she sat in her mother’s car and entered and exited through the main gate of the complex, so An Qi only recognized that gate.
The only thing she could point out was that “when going to the hospital, we pass by a campus.”
Mu Xiao had looked from the seventh floor before. The surrounding area was full of tall buildings, and her line of sight had been blocked, so she had not been able to find anywhere that looked like a campus.
Therefore, Mu Xiao could only follow the plan she had prepared and carefully take An Qi around the residential complex to find the gate An Qi mentioned.
On the other end of the small road, there was a row of shops along the street. Most of the shops were open, but there was no lively flow of people coming and going. In some shops, faint traces of blood could even be seen on the ground.
Mu Xiao did not dare take An Qi and risk approaching those shops. She only chose a direction along the road beside the residential complex fence and walked forward.
Before long, they reached the intersection leading to the main road.
With just one glance, Mu Xiao stopped in her tracks.
“Mu Xiao Sister…” An Qi had also seen the scene on the main road and revealed a trace of small fear.
Mu Xiao recognized this as the very street where she had witnessed the tragedy through the window when she had first transmigrated.
On both sides, some vehicles were parked here and there. Not far away was a large pool of blood, and in the center of that blood lay a corpse whose face was no longer recognizable. The flesh on its stomach had long since been torn clean, exposing blood-stained white bones.
Looking farther in the other direction, broken torsos could be seen from time to time, along with zombies wandering in the middle of the road.
“Sister.” An Qi suddenly tugged at the corner of Mu Xiao’s clothes and shrank back onto the still fairly quiet small road. When Mu Xiao turned to look at her, she immediately said, “That way. Mommy’s hospital is that way.”
Aside from the zombies, An Qi had also seen the gate she usually entered and exited through.
“When we come out of the gate, there’s a newspaper kiosk. I remember it.” An Qi was somewhat anxious. The road was full of zombies, but the newspaper kiosk in her memory was right there. She had seen it.
Mu Xiao was silent for a while, then pulled An Qi and turned toward the opposite side of the small road, away from the newspaper kiosk.
Now An Qi became anxious. She tugged at Mu Xiao’s hand.
“Sister, it’s that way!” She was afraid Mu Xiao did not believe what she had said.
“Shh—” Mu Xiao turned her head. It was still the same gesture, and she also glanced toward the main road. Fortunately, those zombies had not been startled. “There are too many zombies over there. We have to think of a way.”
“Oh~” Once An Qi heard this, she became happy and quickly stopped dragging backward, hurrying to keep up with Mu Xiao’s steps.
After walking back a short distance, Mu Xiao let go of An Qi’s hand and had her stand still. She herself gripped the clothes-drying pole tightly, her gaze landing on the small shop in front of her.
This was the kind of small supermarket commonly found near residential complexes. Inside, there were oil, salt, soy sauce, and vinegar, as well as snacks and drinks. Most importantly, Mu Xiao knew there would definitely be lighters and cigarettes inside.
When she had been upstairs earlier, she had deliberately looked for a lighter. Unfortunately, both the original owner and An Qi’s mother were women who did not smoke, and there had been no lighter in either apartment.
Now, zombies were wandering everywhere over there. Mu Xiao could only commit a little opportunistic theft.
However, small supermarkets were usually cramped. The shelves created many blind spots, and Mu Xiao was not sure whether one or two zombies might be crouching inside.
After telling An Qi not to act rashly, Mu Xiao glanced at the dark little supermarket. In the end, she still clenched the clothes-drying pole and rushed inside quickly.
The moment she stepped into the small supermarket, Mu Xiao swung the clothes-drying pole toward the area behind the counter.
The pole struck empty air, and Mu Xiao actually breathed a sigh of relief.
But immediately after, Mu Xiao’s scalp tightened. Instinctively, she sensed danger behind her head and hurriedly swung the clothes-drying pole backward. This time, she had put all her strength into it. After all, in this era, as long as one was scratched by a zombie, it was probably over.
“Aowu—!”
A miserable scream cut through the air, followed immediately by a muffled thud.
Thump—
Mu Xiao heard that the sound was wrong and quickly turned around. Then she saw a fat man behind her, holding his foot and crying out in pain. Mu Xiao’s strike had hit the fat man’s arm. When his hand loosened, the stool he had been holding high fell and smashed onto his foot.
“…”
Mu Xiao’s mouth twitched. Seeing that the fat man was still tirelessly howling in pain, she had no choice but to speak.
“Sorry, but if you keep shouting, you’ll probably attract zombies.”
This sentence was like pressing a switch. The fat man’s cries of pain abruptly stopped.
Mu Xiao looked outside uneasily. It seemed temporarily safe. She waved at An Qi, telling her to come over.
Since there was someone in this shop, it should count as safe.
